Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since January 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like to ask our councillors, please email on info@granalacantadvertiser.com

Q: Street ligting and smoking, Happy holidays Lou and team,

I hope you enjoy these holidays and have a happy start to the new year.

There are two comments I’d like to leave for our council members in case they help improve Gran Alacant.

I think there is a lack of lighting in the children’s park next to the health center. Perhaps with solar lights or two electric street lamps it could be solved.

When family events are held - Christmas markets, Halloween, or situations that encourage whole families to attend - I think it should be announced and designated as a smoke-free area, meaning that no smoking is allowed. A perimeter could be set up so that people who want to smoke can do so there. We need to protect young children from being passive smokers. I mention this because we are currently at the resort living Christmas market and the DJ is smoking,

people at the stalls are smoking, and it’s not pleasant to be here with my young son. I understand the right to smoke, although I find it difficult to understand because it is harmful both to the person and the environment. For that reason, Santa Pola City Council needs to try to put measures in place to protect children in playgrounds and these types of places.

Thank you for your patience in reading and putting up with all my comments.

Happy holidays, David

ALICANTE AIRPORT CLOSES 2025 WITH RECORD PASSENGER SURGE

Alicante Airport closed 2025 with a record 19.9 million passengers, the highest in its history. The UK market remained dominant, representing about one-third of all arrivals.

Analysts attribute the surge to strong international tourism and increased offseason travel, reinforcing Alicante’s status as a year-round Mediterranean destination rather than a summer-only hotspot.

To support future growth, authorities have announced a €1.154 billion investment programme for 2027–2031 to expand capacity and enhance facilities.

With its pleasant climate, modern infrastructure and efficient connectivity, Alicante is positioning itself as one of Spain’s most attractive coastal gateways.

Alicante Airport will also undergo a €1.1 billion expansion to make travel to the Costa Blanca faster and more efficient. Plans include a new non-Schengen terminal for UK and other non-EU arrivals, upgraded boarding and commercial areas, and modernised security and baggage systems.

Biometric border control will speed up arrivals and boost efficiency. The project is scheduled for completion in 2031, making Alicante an even more streamlined and welcoming hub

WETHERSPOONS LANDS AT ALICANTE AIRPORT - A TASTE OF BRITAIN BEFORE TAKEOFF

Alicante-Elche Airport is about to welcome a very British arrival. The first-ever Wetherspoon pub in continental Europe is set to open its doors at the end of January, bringing a slice of the UK straight to the Costa Blanca’s busiest travel hub.

The new venue will occupy a 93 m² space in the departures area, complete with an outdoor terrace and the classic Wetherspoons menu travellers know and love. Holidaymakers heading back to the UK will be able to enjoy full English breakfasts, fish and chips, and even a selection of Spanish favourites — the perfect farewell before boarding.

The pub will open daily from 6am to 9pm, offering early-morning breakfasts and all-day dining for the millions of British passengers passing through the airport each year.

With its unmistakably British charm and traveller-friendly pricing, Wetherspoons is set to become a popular stop for anyone craving a familiar taste of home before takeoff.

MAJOR FILM PRODUCTIONS PLANNED FOR ALICANTE IN 2026

Alicante is set to receive a significant economic boost, as a British film production company is planning up to six featurelength films at the Ciudad de la Luz studios, beginning in early 2026.

The proposed productions are expected to bring substantial investment to the province, including an estimated 15,000 overnight stays in local hotels and tourist accommodation. Filming is scheduled to continue into early 2027, providing sustained activity for the local economy.

If confirmed, the projects will further strengthen Alicante’s position as a leading international filming destination, delivering long-term benefits for local businesses, employment, and the tourism sector across the Costa Blanca.

This development highlights the growing appeal of Alicante and the Costa Blanca as a hub for global film production.

GRAN ALACANT PROPERTY MARKET CONTINUES TO RISE

The Alicante property market is setting new records, and Gran Alacant is firmly part of this upward trend. Strong demand, particularly from international buyers, continues to support both sales activity and price growth in the area.

Alicante province recorded 53,750 property sales over the past year, ranking third in Spain. Notably, 43.3% of purchases were made by foreign buyers - the highest percentage nationwide - with strong interest from UK and Northern European buyers.

This demand has pushed prices higher, with the average price per square metre in Alicante reaching a new high of €2,670, up 14.3% year-on-year. Coastal communities with good transport links, lifestyle appeal, and proximity to the airport - such as Gran Alacant - remain especially attractive.

With its coastal setting, easy access to Alicante city and airport, and continued international interest, Gran Alacant remains a strong option for buyers, sellers, and property investors alike.

An Interview With Alex The Plumber Man

Leaks, blocks, and surprises - Alex The Plumberman has seen it all. We caught up with him to chat about life, local customers, and what keeps his wrench turning.

Where were you and what were you doing before you became Alex The Plumber Man?

Well, I was born in Elche and I guess things were fairly conventional in my life up until 2014 when I decide to go travelling. My travels took me through Thailand, Indonesia, Fiji and finally Australia...I loved that time... so many new things and the exposure to new cultures and new ideas and new ways of doing things! I eventually settled for a while in, taking a job there, and I gained good experience there of working in an English-speaking environment and perfected my English language speaking skills!

I returned to Spain in 2020 with a new business mindset based on the model I worked with in Sydney. I also came back because I had a child and wanted him to grow up close to family. My goal was to bring that Australian work style to Alicante and the Costa Blanca to offer a service that truly supports English speakers here, treating them as if they were back home.

What do you now?

Right now, as it says above, I work as a plumber in the Alicante area, covering from El Campello to Guardamar. I focus mainly on urbanisations like La Marina (lots of customers here!) and Gran Alacant, where I’m putting into practice the project I mentioned earlier. I’m offering a service designed especially for English-speaking residents, bringing that same professional approach I learned in Australia.

What is your favourite thing about living in Spain?

For me, living in Spain is the best choice because I love seeing my son grow up close to his family. I feel completely at home here: the climate, the beach, the food and the Spanish lifestyle are a big part of

who I am. At the same time, Spain gives me the professional niche I need to grow independently and offer real quality to my clients. My family, my wife and my home are here, and although I’m very Spanish, my time abroad has given me a more open mindset compared to people who haven’t left the country.

How do you see the future?

I see my future in a very positive way, especially professionally. I believe that I´ve been successful, and will continue to be successful, because I’m filling a gap that, in my opinion, hasn’t been covered properly—not just by speaking English, but by working with a real focus on excellence and customer satisfaction. I see myself with a strong base of English-speaking clients—British, American, Swiss, northern Europeans—who trust me completely.

I imagine my future as being that of a successful business owner, known for honesty, quality and dignity, always doing good work for the people I serve, especially the English-speaking community I’m committed to helping.

Book of the month by Beth

An inspirational and compelling novel My Recommended Book of the Month The Women

‘Women can be heroes’. When 20 year old nursing student Frankie hears these words It is a revelation. Raised in Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. It is 1965 and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death. In war she meets and becomes one of the lucky ,the brave, the broken and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women gave me a small insight into the women everywhere whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. It explores the very deep friendships they make which helps them to survive and help others.

MEET PAUL KANE:

The Man Steering the Royal British Legion in Spain North (With a Smile)

If the Royal British Legion had a personality in Spain District North, it would probably look a lot like its Chairman, Paul Kane: cheerful, sharp, and quietly getting things done across a territory that stretches from the French border all the way down to Granada. No small patch of land, and certainly no small role.

Paul spent 16 years in the Army, rising from soldier to Captain, earning his two stripes and a leadership style built on teamwork, responsibility, and the ability to stay calm when things get complicated. Those skills have come in handy during his 31-year association with the Royal British Legion, an involvement that began through family connections and quickly became a lifelong commitment.

Over the years, Paul has worked his way through almost every area of the charity. Branch roles, committee work, and

eventually Branch Chairman prepared him well for what came next: the prestigious and demanding position of Spain District North Chairman, which he has held for the past seven years. The job involves supporting branches, overseeing welfare cases, and keeping everything running smoothly across a very large map of Spain.

Despite the responsibility, Paul remains refreshingly approachable. Known for his sense of humour and friendly nature, he believes that laughter helps break down barriers. “If people feel comfortable,” he says, “they’re more likely to ask for help.”

Intelligent, dedicated, and always good for a joke, Paul Kane proves that serious work does not have to be taken too seriouslyand that leadership is often about being human first.

During 2026 we will be supporting asociación española contra el cáncer. This national charity provides support to patients and families living with cancer and also helps fund essential research and development. You will often find volunteers from this charity providing hot and cold drinks at Elche General Hospital in and around the oncology and haematology departments.

Any ladies wishing to join the group can be found on Facebook GALs (Gran Alacant Ladies).

We look forward to seeing you at a GALs event soon.

THE GUEST EDIT

"I love casual clothes, and these stretch trousers are incredibly comfortable. I even bought them for myself in several colors. I really like the sweater; it feels super soft. I also think it looks great with the belt. I don't like big bags, so this crossbody is perfect for me."

"Blue is my favorite color, and I love this jacket. It's incredibly comfortable. Underneath, I chose a stretchy, classic polo shirt in cream. It goes perfectly with these jeans."

"Sabine sells the brand "Adoro," and they're incredibly comfortable. They're stretchy and come in various styles. Green isn't usually my color, but I really like this pastel sweater."

For your dose of fresh fashion inspiration, stop by House of Malu in Masa Square and see Sabine!

We’re delighted to welcome our special guest, Nicolette to House of Malu this month!

I'm Nicolette van de Kletersteeg-Boon, and I've been happily married to Wim for over 44 years. Together we had our own bakery in Holland which we ran together. We have four children, all of whom are now married, and now have three fantastic sons-in-law and one daughter-in-law. We also have seven beautiful and sweet grandchildren.

After selling the bakery, we had more time for ourselves. Because we'd been visiting Gran Alacant for almost 20 years, we bought a larger house there about three years ago, and now happily spend about half the year here.

We clicked with Sabine right from the start, and also shared her perspective on life and fashion. Therefore her clothing selection and style is as good as mine. First in Torrevieja in her shop, later on Sundays with her pop-up stall at Masa Square, and now in her beautiful, cosy 'House of Malu' boutique.

I visit almost every week, because she almost always has something new; she follows the seasons, so there's always something surprising. Of course, I often leave the shop happy with something new. Even for a friendly chat and a cup of coffee. Sabine doesn't push anything on me and even tells me if something isn't "my thing" or doesn't suit me. In short: buying gorgeous clothing and accessories at fair and affordable prices, in a fashionable and cosy shop."

"Thank you, Sabine and Lou, for making the photo shoot so enjoyable

Ask Dr. Soraya

In a new monthly feature, Dr Soraya Benavides an expert in Integrative and Anti-Aging Medicine, answers your questions on health and wellbeing.

“Hello, I’m 59 and I’ve struggled with being overweight for the past eight years. I’ve tried different diets and exercise plans, but the weight loss is minimal and I usually regain it. I’ve heard about injections that help with weight loss, but I’m worried about possible side effects. Are they safe?” - Laura

Dr Soraya:

This is a very common concern, and you’re certainly not alone. Before using any weight-loss method, the first and most important step is a proper medical evaluation. This allows us to understand your health, metabolism, medical history and lifestyle, and to recommend the most suitable option for you.

There are several injectable treatments available today, and they are not all the same. Used in the right patient and under medical supervision, they can be a safe and effective tool. However, they are only one part of a much broader approach.

Successful and lasting weight management goes beyond injections. It involves a personalised plan, realistic goals, lifestyle support and ongoing follow-up, so that the weight loss is sustainable in the long termnot just temporary.

At Family Doctors, our weight management clinic is fully doctor-led. Treatments are prescribed only after careful assessment and are closely supervised, with the aim of improving health, wellbeing and long-term results.

“Hello, I’m 68 and I’ve noticed that ageing has become more visible on my face, especially around my eyes and mouth. I have wrinkles, some sagging and my skin looks dull. I take good care of my skin, eat well, avoid the sun and use sunscreen. I’ve thought about having a treatment, but I’m afraid of exaggerated results - I’ve seen women who look swollen or unnatural. What would you recommend if I just want to look better, not ‘overdone’?” - Mary

Dr Soraya:

This is a very understandable concern, and it’s one I hear often. Taking care of your appearance and your skin is part of taking care of yourself - at any age. Good skincare products are important and helpful, but it’s true that creams can only work on the surface layers of the skin.

Modern aesthetic medicine has changed a great deal in recent years. The focus today is no longer on “filling” faces, but on improving skin quality, restoring balance and supporting natural ageing. The aim is not to look 15 years younger, but to look well, fresh and natural, with healthy, luminous skin.

There are treatments that help soften wrinkles, improve firmness and stimulate the skin’s own collagen in a subtle and longlasting way, without changing facial features or expressions. When done properly, results should never look exaggerated.

Every face is different, and there is no single treatment that suits everyone. That is why a personal medical assessment is essential. During a consultation, I evaluate your skin, facial structure and expectations, and then recommend what is most appropriate for you.

As a medical doctor specialised in aesthetic medicine, with many years of experience, my priority is always natural results, safety and respect for your features. Sometimes less really is more.

Got a question or concern? We would love to hear from you! Send your queries to info@familydoctors24hr.com

Alicante Holiday Villas Begins New Chapter Under GA-Homefinders

After more than two decades helping homeowners and holidaymakers enjoy sun-drenched breaks on the Costa Blanca, Alicante Holiday Villas has entered a new chapter. In November 2025 Mark and Haidee, the duo who built the company from the ground up, handed the business over to local estate agency GA-Homefinders, marking the end of an impressive 22-year journey and the start of a natural evolution for both companies.

For many in Gran Alacant, Alicante Holiday Villas has been part of the local fabric since 2003. Its story began modestly: with a suitcase full of leaflets and a determination to build something new, Mark and Haidee walked the streets delivering thousands of flyers through post boxes. “In two days we’d put out 5,000,” they recalled. After that, they waited for the phone to ring - and it did. Within days, the first website was launched, property owners began to list their homes, and the first holidaymakers booked their stays in Gran Alacant.

Within a few years the company had grown to 90 rental properties, earning

a reputation for reliability, service and genuine care for both owners and guests. As competition increased, Mark and Haidee shifted strategy, focusing on a smaller portfolio of high-quality, wellloved properties that offered guests the standards they had come to expect. That mix of scale and care earned loyalty from visitors returning year after year and secured Alicante Holiday Villas’ place as a trusted name in local tourism

After 22 years of early mornings, late nights and peak-season hustle, the owners reached a crossroads. They were ready to retire - but they wanted the business to land in the right hands. The search brought plenty of interest from potential buyers, yet the perfect fit was closer to home than they expected. GA-Homefinders, one of Alicante Holiday Villas’ long-standing partners and clients, emerged as the natural successor.

Founded in 2000 by Karen Webster and Julia Pollitt, GA-Homefinders began life in a small office at the top of Gran Alacant before moving to the Commercial Centre in 2010. Philippe, originally from Bourgogne in France, joined the company in 2006 and

later became its sole owner. The estate agency is now run by a small multilingual team - Ingrid from Rotterdam and Louise from London - both of whom live in Gran Alacant and consider the town their speciality.

More than just an estate agency, GA-Homefinders has built a strong presence in the community - from offering advice at the weekly market to supporting local raffles and GA-Cleanup events, Philippe and his team are committed to giving back to Gran Alacant. That same dedication to doing things with integrity earned the agency recognition as the first API-registered estate agent in Gran Alacant. Today, Philippe continues to champion ethical practice as a board member of the Official Property Agent Body in Alicante, ensuring standards are upheld to protect both buyers and sellers.

focus is to continue the legacy built by Haidee and Mark while expanding into a fully integrated model for both holiday rentals and property sales. In a town where many visitors ultimately become homeowners, combining these services gives clients consistency, trusted advice and a single point of contact throughout their Spanish journey, from first holiday right through to buying a home.

GA-Homefinders has been working with Alicante Holiday Villas for more than 20 years, so the transition felt both seamless and logical. For Mark and Haidee, that compatibility mattered. “We are very proud of what we achieved and believe Philippe and his team will take Alicante Holiday Villas further,” they said. Mark added that they would not change a thing about the last 22 years, describing the hard work as well worth it. The couple now look forward to something they rarely had as business owners: holidays in the summer months.

For GA-Homefinders, the takeover represents an opportunity to preserve and grow a much-loved local service. Their

GA-HOMEFINDERS

As Philippe and his team take the reins, Alicante Holiday Villas enters the next stage of its story with passion and purpose, driven by a genuine desire to help clients make the most of their time in Gran Alacant - whether for a holiday, a season or a lifetime.

You can now find Alicante Holiday Villas and GA-Homefinders together in one office in the Gran Alacant Commercial Centre.

The period between Christmas day and New Year can often be an energy sapping time of dull weather, rich food and stuffy family gatherings. That’s why we decided to escape to our local capital of Valencia to visit two very different exhibitions showcasing contrasting aspects of the city’s cultural life at the very beginning and end of the 20th century.

The first show we visited was a landmark exhibition of the work of the genius painter Joaquin Sorolla. Born in Valencia in 1863 Sorolla became known as the “master of light” for his ability to capture light and shade in his beautiful works. The exhibition that we visited was an opportunity to see works normally held in the Sorolla museum in Madrid but currently on tour due to the closure of the museum for renovation.

The exhibition covered his entire career from his start as a fairly routine, if skilled, salon portraitist to the glittering finale of his career when he created some of the most famous and beloved paintings of 20th century Spanish art. His late paintings of beach scenes both landscapes and portraits of his family and others enjoying summer days by the sea have become so well known that one is shocked to see them in the flesh.

The beach paintings are incredibly beautiful both for the colours Sorolla used to depict the Mediterranean coast and the way he captured human joy and life; however his skill and lightness of touch is such that the paintings are never dull or kitsch. His background as a serious portrait painter always shows through despite what may seem like genre beach paintings. To be in the presence of such works brings real joy; perfect to lift the twixmas blues!

It is impossible however to view Sorolla’s works without the foreboding knowledge that the world they portray of easy Edwardian leisure was to be shattered in the wars and revolutions that convulsed Europe in the years immediately following. His most famous works portray the Indian summer of a world slipping away and are deeply profound for that reason.

The second exhibition that we visited could not have been more different. A multimedia celebration and exploration of the musical and social phenomenon known as “La Ruta” that gripped the Valencia region from the early 1980s until it fizzled out in the late 1990s.

Born in record shops and clubs in the period immediately following the death of Franco La Ruta was at its core a nightlife scene centred around a desire to enjoy new music from all over the world. In particular the young people flocking to the clubs around

ART TO STIR THE SOUL

Valencia in the early 1980s wanted to hear and dance to the cutting edge electronic music being made not just in Spain but also in Germany and Britain. As the 80s rolled on the scene came to include the house music that transformed music and the later period of La Ruta became synonymous with dance music and culture in a similar process to that occurring in Ibiza at the same time.

La Ruta however was always a more Spanish phenomenon than the tourist driven Ibiza scene, having more in common with the rave culture that existed at the same time in the UK and parts of northern continental Europe; the kids just wanted to have a good time and during La Ruta they absolutely did! Inevitably and similar to other countries there was a moral and political backlash that centred around fears of abuse of drugs but that also surely represented fears of supposed decadence and societal decay. By the end of the 1990s the La Ruta scene had ended, many of the clubs closed and younger generations had moved on other music and venues.

However, for over 10 years La Ruta burned brightly and illuminated the new Spain being born at that time. The exhibition we visited masterfully captured the fun and vibrancy of the music, clubs and scene of “La Ruta”.

Youth culture is by its nature ephemeral yet it leaves a mark on those who lived through it and for our region it is impossible to tell the story of the 1980s and 90s without La Ruta. Talk to any local Spaniard who was young at that time and they will have tales of crazy nights spent driving into the countryside with friends in convoys to visit clubs to dance till the morning to tunes from all over the world; a time of freedom and joy, as youth should always be!

These two contrasting exhibitions certainly brought us joy and light as we awaited the dawn of 2026! We encourage everyone to consider visiting these two exhibitions whilst they are available. The Sorolla exhibition continues until February 2026 and the La Ruta exhibition is ongoing. Check online for details.

Special Valentine´s Messages

Love That Begins at Your Feet

Valentine’s Day is usually about hearts, grand gestures, and shared promises. But there’s a quieter, more enduring kind of love that rarely makes it into the conversation: self-care. It asks for no audience, makes no announcements, andunexpectedly - begins far from the heart: at our feet.

Every day, our feet support us without complaint. They absorb our rush, our long shifts, our high heels, our worn-out sneakers - and they simply keep going. Caring for them isn’t cosmetic; it’s a form of respect for the body that carries us. In podiatry, that respect becomes well-being, mobility, and a better quality of life.

Self-love also means paying attention to the signs we’ve learned to normalize: end-of-day soreness, calluses, difficult nails, or a gait that slowly changes. It’s not vanity - it’s prevention. Because when our feet hurt, the rest of the body carries the burden: knees, back, posture, even our mood. Self-care begins the moment we stop treating pain as something normal.

So this Valentine’s Day, love can take a different form. It can look like booking a check-up, carving out time for yourself, or gifting comfort to someone who never stops. Podiatry doesn’t just treat feet-it protects steps, supports journeys, and improves the way we live.

Perhaps the most romantic gesture isn’t roses or chocolates, but the freedom to walk without pain- with comfort, awareness, and confidence. Because true self-love isn’t just spoken. It’s lived, one step at a time.

Thank you to all my patients for the trust you place in me every day. Wishing you a month filled with love. Happy Valentine’s Day.

NEW “HYPOALLERGENIC” CROSSBREEDS

All dogs, from small to large ones, are beautiful. Some of them are smarter, some others are funnier, and some other ones are surprising. We have praised lots of times the advantages of crossed dogs: they are usually stronger and healthier than pure breed ones (hybrid vigor). Why? Because obtaining pure breed animals normally implies inbreeding, which is a source of genetic problems and diseases.

There is a type of dog for every people. We are not talking about breeds, but characteristics. For example: “I want a small dog because I cannot lift heavy weights”, “I want a dog whose coat maintenance does not require professional grooming”, or “I want a large and strong dog because I love exercise and sports, and I want my dog to join me”. In every case, adopting a dog always requires a previous reflection: do I prefer adopting a puppy or an adult? Am I able to have a dog with special requirements (chronic patient on a long term medication)? Considering my way of life, would it be better for me a big dog or a small one?

Of course, this would be the ideal proceeding, but sometimes, a dog just appears suddenly in our lives “I didn’t want a young dog, but I saw it at an adoption website and I couldn’t avoid it…”

There are not “better” or “worse” dog breeds. The only important thing is to know exactly what the dog needs, and what we need (and what can we offer to the dog).

These last years are becoming more and more popular some Poodle-based crossbreeds. Why Poodle-based? Because of low-shedding traits (they are considered as “hypoallergenic dogs”. It’s true that Poodles never shed, but this fact makes absolutely mandatory for them regular visits to a good professional groomer. This characteristic of Poodle coat is not always 100% transmitted, so some of these crossbreeds may shed. Genetic laws are sometimes very unpredictable, and when crossing a Poodle with other breed, the result may vary from an “almost Poodle”

to something similar to a curled hair Cocker Spaniel, as it happens with some Cockapoos.

So far, the most common Poodle-based crossbreeds are Cockapoo (Cocker Spaniel X Poodle) and Labradoodle (Labrador Retriever X Giant Poodle). According to our experience, they are usually nice dogs which combine good things from both breeds, but let’s don’t forget that a Labradoodle is a nice massive Labrador which will require a haircut every 6-8 weeks, and clipping a 40 kg long haired dog is not easy, quick or cheap.

But lately, tens and tens of Poodle-based crossbreeds have appeared, by crossing Poodles with miniature breeds such as Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas, Maltese, Pekinese…, and even with large breeds such as Bernese. People who purchase a Poodle-based crossbreed normally expect their dog must be 50% Poodle and 50% the other breed, and this is not always like this. There can be big differences between individuals even at the same litter. If we are allergic and we are looking for a hypoallergenic dog, why don’t we trust Poodle? The possibility of our adorable Maltipoo not being 100% hypoallergenic is real, and what can we do if that happens? We must insist genetics is a lottery. Remember the joke of the top model and the scientific: “can you imagine the baby we may have, as intelligent as you and as beautiful as me?” “Imagine what would happen if it is as ugly as me and as silly as you” he replied.

In Spain, pets keep being offered as Christmas presents, and there are estimations that around 40% of them will be refused or abandoned in about 2-3 months. In some cases the cause is just bad people who won’t hesitate abandoning an animal, but in some other cases is the result of bad and unconsidered decisions, and a lack of knowledge about what can we expect when adopting an animal. Please, ask a Vet first. We will never charge you for some advice.

LA MARINA

Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP

With the halfway point of the season in the past, Elche have maintained a midtable position, and there’s still a lot of interest and excitement locally for the La Liga campaign, despite going out of the Cup in January.

Home matches see the local supporters group meeting at Reckless Bar and carsharing to get to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to GA afterwards. Away games are screened at Reckless Bar for the group to watch together.

www.elchecf.es - usually during the week of the game.

The group currently consists of a large number of season ticket holders, and a growing number of regular match attendees.

Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the date and time of matches to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand. Tickets for matches can be purchased via the club website at

After some big games in January, Elche will look to get more points on the board when they host Osasuna on the weekend of 14th February and then Espanyol on the weekend of 28th February (date and time TBC for both games).

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL

NEW YEAR - NEW YOU?!

As we welcome in a New Year after overindulging during the festivities of December, many of us decide to try a new hobby, to get fit or simply spend more time with friends. All these aspirations can be fulfilled simply by coming along to the weekly sessions of the Women’s Walking Football.

The philosophy of Walking Football centres on accessibility, active ageing and holistic well-being (physical, mental and social) for individuals who cannot participate in traditional high impact sport due to age, injury or physical limitations.

A major component of this philosophy is to combat loneliness and depression by getting people out of the house, fostering camaraderie and building a supportive community. The social aspect for us in Gran Alacant is as important as the physical exercise. The post session refreshments at El Tio Chato are as enjoyable as the exercise itself.

If you want to give Walking Football a try (or even just come along to watch) make contact and we guarantee you won’t regret it.

After the brief festive shut down, the Gran Alacant Walking Football sessions were up and running (walking!) again on Wednesday 14th January. It was great to see so many people there along with some new faces.

We meet each Wednesday at 12 noon on the outdoor astroturf pitch at the GA Sports Centre. We have a multinational membership where the common language is...football. If you want to come along, please arrive around 11.50am to allow for teams to be arranged but be mindful of students who may still be around. The facility now closes at 1pm so we need to be out of the showers quickly!

Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! We play each Wednesday on the astroturf at the Polideportivo (Sports Centre) in Gran Alacant. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have members from several countries with players’ ages ranging from early fifties to over 70. In addition, there are quarterly social meets (combined with the women’s group). The next event is on Tuesday 3rd February. So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below).

Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola.

For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group or the Facebook page for information regarding upcoming social events.
