ASK OUR GA COUNCILLORS

Q: RENTALS

Hi Lou,

In your January edition you report on the success and €1.1bn future development of Alicante Airport.

I would like to understand how the Spanish authorities can justify this as they hound property owners, who let out their properties to visitors, out of the market with excessive taxes and ever increasing bureaucracy. Their latest wheeze is to introduce another register on which we must list all rentals for the previous year, their length, reason and number of clients. This MUST be completed between 2nd Feb and 2nd March under threat of losing your license.

How are they going to manage the flood of yet more information on top of the up to 9-day tourist license, 10-day plus licenses, CCU’s (which the Town Hall is already unable to confirm to me because they are so overworked/understaffed!) and NRUA’s (whatever they are?)?

We did not buy our flat as an investment but

we rent to allow other people to enjoy this beautiful place when we do not. The flood of anti-rental legislation, which also includes Urbanisation wide votes to permit owners to rent out their properties, is simply driving owners to sell-up because of the stress and cost (mainly, but not exclusively, solicitors fees) is simply not worth it. Once sold, in many urbanisations, new owners will not be allowed to let out these properties and so the stock of available accommodation will simply disappear.

So why spend all that money on the airport? Peter

GA ADVERTISER REPLY:

Hi Peter,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. We understand your frustration with the current state of property rental regulations and the impact they are having on property owners like yourself. The changes you mention are certainly challenging, especially when they seem to be adding unnecessary complexity.

We reached out to Alicante Holiday Villas

for some clarification on the issue, and they provided the following insights:

1, Increase in passenger numbers to Alicante: The airport expansion is driven by a growing number of visitors, especially from Eastern European countries. The British community remains the largest group, but there's been a noticeable rise in visitors from countries like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

2, Foreign property purchases: Alicante has become the leading province in Spain for property purchases by foreign buyers, surpassing Mallorca and Málaga. Nearly 45% of property transactions in 2025 involved foreign purchasers, contributing to the growing demand for both housing and tourism services.

3, Population growth: Spain continues to see population growth with around 200,000 new residents arriving annually from abroad, further increasing the demand for housing and services.

4, Housing and tourist rentals: The shortterm rental sector has expanded rapidly in recent years, often without adequate regulation. This has led to conflicts in residential areas, where long-established buildings are suddenly filled with short-term rental properties, causing disruptions. In some areas, this has led to inappropriate behavior such as late-night noise and parties, which has forced the authorities to step in and regulate the sector to ensure quality standards.

In areas like Gran Alacant, where most properties have independent access, these issues are less of a concern. However, as the authorities regulate the sector across Spain, there is a need to address these issues to prevent further complications, especially in more densely populated urban areas. While we understand the stress and cost of these ongoing changes, it's clear that the authorities felt these measures were necessary to stabilize the market and improve the overall quality of short-term rentals. Of course, we share your hope that once the regulations are fully in place, things will run more smoothly and the market will stabilize.

We would also love to hear from our readers on this issue. If you have any thoughts or opinions, please feel free to share them by sending an email to info@granalacantadvertiser.com

Q: Avda. Polonia

Hi, I've been visiting for 25 years, and I’m both saddened and shocked by the condition of Avenguda de Polonia. It's overrun with weeds, dog waste, and trash. It's truly disgraceful.

GA Advertiser Reply:

Thank you for sharing your concerns. We sincerely apologize for the current state of the area. Rest assured, we will pass your feedback along to the relevant councillors and work towards ensuring improvements are made. We hope to see positive changes soon. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Book of the month by Beth

A perfect book to read over Easter My Recommended Book of the Month The Hawk is Dead by Peter

Roy Grace never dreamed a murder investigation would take him deep into Buckingham Palace…

Her Majesty, Queen Camilla, is aboard the Royal Train heading to a charity event in Sussex when disaster strikes - the train is derailed.

A tragic accident or a planned attack? Minutes later, when a trusted aide Peregrine Greaves is shot dead by a sniper, the police have their answer.

Yet, despite all the evidence, Roy Grace is not convinced the Queen was the intended target. But he finds himself alone in his suspicions. Fighting against the scepticism of his colleagues and the Palace itself, Grace pursues his own investigation. But when there is a second murder, the stakes rise even higher, and Grace is at risk of being embroiled in a very public catastrophe or even mortal danger.

Failure at this level is not an option. But time is running out before a killer in the Palace will strike again…

Peter James is a very successful crime writer but I have to admit it has been a few years since I read one of his books. I enjoyed the insight into the workings of the Royal Household just as much as the story.

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

Spring Fair Masa Square 2026

The first Aspetga Fayre of 2026 was a great start to the year, featuring over 20 diverse craft stalls. Among the new attractions were stalls offering speciality chocolatedecorated fruits, party sweets, and homemade puddings, delighting visitors with their unique offerings.

Unfortunately, due to heavy rain and strong winds, the event had to close early as umbrellas and craft items were blown across the square. Despite the weather, the event was a success, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to Skippers for their generous sponsorship and to the Belfry for providing tables for our vendors.

A special shoutout goes to everyone who braved the elements and showed their support. Thanks to your contributions, we raised over €300 for Aspetga, which was used to purchase 80 kilos of cat food for the Feral Cat Colonies.

Your support makes a world of difference!

Meet Luis de Avendaño:

Full Title Vice Chair of GA and La Marina branch & webmaster of both Madrid and GA & La Marina Branches. As I interviewed him and took the picture, he assured me that he was smiling! However, don’t be fooled with that frown comes a lot of wisdom regarding RBL.

Luis joined the RBL as a member in 2004, and his claim to fame was that he was one of the founding members of the Madrid branch. Since then, he has become the IT co-ordinator encompassing web design, DTP and all that it entails. Seems fitting as after leaving school, he joined the Army and served in 3 Royal Anglian (Pompadours) as a signaller. In his own words, he liked tinkering with electronics.

Luis spends approx. 3-4 hours per day at his computer doing various IT roles, including working on the newly launched RBL website for us, www.rbl-galm.org, which now has a much simpler route to help you register for membership.

He is well versed on current affairs, but in his spare time he writes quizzes, researches new technologies and applications and generally tweaks things to the better.

Setting the Gold Standard:

When Roy Spencer & Jordan Whittingham founded RJS CBD two years back, after nearly 18 months of development and time spent working on their products, the pair had one clear mission: to create the very best CBD products on the market, and tackle the growing problem of home- made, poor quality, CBD and similar products entering the Spanish & European market.

What they weren't prepared for were the stories. Every week, messages land in the RJS CBD inbox from customers across Gran Alacant and beyond — real people, sharing real experiences that go far beyond what any lab report or certificate of analysis could ever capture. Stories of lives changed, comfort restored, and hope rediscovered. It is these stories that drive everything the company does today.

Among the most humbling messages RJS CBD has received are those from customers undergoing chemotherapy. The physical toll of cancer treatment is immense, and for some, conventional approaches to managing the accompanying discomfort only add to the burden. Several customers in the Gran Alacant community have shared that incorporating RJS CBD oil into their daily wellness routine offered them a sense of comfort and calm during the most challenging chapter of their lives. These are not clinical claims — they are deeply personal accounts from people who found a small measure of ease when they needed it most. For Roy and Jordan, receiving those messages changed everything. It confirmed that what they had built was more than a product. It was something that mattered. Not every story involves a dramatic diagnosis. Some of the most powerful testimonials come from people who had simply accepted that discomfort, restless nights, or constant unease were just part of life. Customers living with arthritis have described how RJS CBD's Deep Relief Balm, applied directly to stiff and aching joints, became a welcome part of their morning routine - helping them move more freely

The Real-Life Stories Behind RJS CBD

and enjoy activities they had started to give up. Others have spoken about years of poor sleep and how adding a few drops of CBD oil to their evening routine helped them finally unwind, rest properly, and wake up feeling genuinely refreshed for the first time in as long as they could remember.

Then there are the customers who had been living with persistent anxiety or stress - that constant background noise that makes even simple daily tasks feel overwhelming. For many, RJS CBD became a gentle, plant-based addition to their self-care toolkit, helping them feel more centred, more present, and more like themselves again. These are everyday people in our community, and their stories are a reminder that quality of life is everything.

As the company continues to set the standard across Spain, RJS CBD has won multiple awards for product quality, and every bottle and balm comes with full transparency - lab-tested, organic, and backed by publicly available Certificates of Analysis. The range is available in multiple strengths and flavours, with free worldwide shipping on every order.

But ask Roy or Jordan what they are most proud of, and it is never the awards. It is the message from the woman who slept through the night for the first time in years. The gentleman who could finally walk his dog without wincing. The couple who told them that for the first time in months, they felt like themselves again. These stories arrive every week, and every single one matters.

If you are in the Gran Alacant area and would like to learn more, visit www.rjscbd. com or find RJS CBD at local markets. You can also get in touch via WhatsApp on (+34) 602 224 909 or email info@rjscbd. com.

Acts of Kindness in the Community

A group of local knitters in Gran Alacant has been spreading joy through their handmade knitted dolls, inspired by the UK’s “Acts of Kindness” initiative. The charming dolls are available for just €3, with all proceeds supporting local charities. So far, they’ve raised €140 to buy Easter eggs for children at the San José orphanage.

You can purchase these lovely dolls at Tommy’s Bar and Quicksave on Avenida Escandinavia, as well as at Molly Malone’s in the Carabassi Centre. Thanks to the community’s support, these kind-hearted

efforts are making a big difference. If you're in the area, why not stop by and grab one of these beautiful handmade dolls? Your purchase will help brighten a child’s day and support great causes like the Finca La Castellana Animal Charity.

SPRING IS ON ITS WAY: BELLS, BLOSSOMS AND SEMANA SANTA

Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar and nowhere is it celebrated with as much fervor and passion as Spain. Whilst most Spaniards are no longer regular church goers, the rituals of Holy Week, “Semana Santa”, are observed not just for their religious significance but also for the cultural importance they hold. The processions, music, decoration and costumes employed during Easter week bring alive an older Iberia with a complex history of religion and traditions. Our province contains some of the most colourful and evocative Easter week events with each of our local cities having its own events. In recent years we have visited Alicante, Elche and Orihuela to join the crowds participating in these colourful moments.

On Wednesday the place to be is Alicante when the local community parade the Christ of the Gypsies through the narrow lanes of the medieval old town, Barrio Santa Cruz. Try to get there early in the afternoon to get a spot to observe one of

the most beautiful traditions of Southern Spanish Easter; the singing of the saeta. This extraordinary moment in the parade is when a singer expresses the pain of the Passion of Christ through the artistry of a traditional Gypsy lament which originally is influenced by Christian, Jewish, and Arab culture, with echoes of synagogue chants and Arabic lament. The singers sing from a balcony above the crowd but at eye level with the figure of Christ being carried in procession. It is an expression of religious faith and passion from the Gypsy community and quite unlike anything else in Roman Catholicism; uniquely Spanish. The beauty of the singing and the passionate responses of the crowd bring alive the torment and suffering that Christ underwent.

The grandest display of Catholic pomp takes place the next day on Maundy Thursday night in Elche. The torchlight parade of religious statues carried all over the city is spectacular. Richly decorated floats carrying painted and gilded statues

of Jesus and Maria are slowly carried on the shoulders of dozens of men hidden beneath heavy velvet drapes; the entire spectacle is lit by hundreds of candles framing the holy images. The processions also include hundreds of penitents dressed in the characteristic pointed costumes hiding their faces. The music accompanying the processions is provided by massed bands playing wonderful marches of solemn grandeur and majesty. The Elche processions are the type of spectacular and colourful display that one associates with the famous Spanish Easter.

On Good Friday the place to visit is the city of Orihuela, which is the ancient seat of the local bishops, hosts what is probably the most extraordinary Easter week event in our region; Procesión del silencio, the silent nighttime procession of penitents. This procession through the old town streets takes place in total silence and complete darkness. Black robed and often barefoot the penitents light their way with handheld torches accompanied by clergy. The spectacle is moving and eerie, as befits the night of Christ’s violent death. Of all of the Easter week events the silent procession in Orihuela is perhaps the most striking and to modern eyes the most perplexing.

All of these events take place in the Holy week proceeding Easter weekend, but they actually capture best the real spiritual meaning of the Easter festival. Easter weekend itself is, of course, centred around the joyful moment of Easter Sunday when the Church celebrates its most important event; the resurrection of Jesus Christ and his offer of eternal salvation to the world in return for his sacrifice on the cross. Easter Sunday is overshadowed these days by Christmas but Easter is actually the most important Christian festival and the one that embodies its real spiritual message. Whether one is a Christian believer or not, the message of hope and peace that Easter represents should be welcome to us all at this most difficult of times. We invite you all to attend and participate in the colourful and emotional Easter events in our province and to take time to reflect on things apart from the cares and bustle of everyday life.

The procession of the Gypsy Christ is in Alicante on 1st April, the Elche procession is on 2nd April and the silent procession of the penitents is in Orihuela on 3rd April.

WHAT HAPPENS TO CATS WITHOUT HOMES?

GA Advertiser: Last month, we featured an appeal to find homes for five cats in Gran Alacant after their owner sadly passed away. Some readers asked what would happen if homes aren’t found in time - to provide clarity, we reached out to the local veterinary team at Gran Alacant Exotics for their insight:

First of all, there is nothing to worry about the cats being put to sleep, because this is forbidden in Spain. Nobody can put cats to sleep just because they have no owner or are living in the street.

According to Spanish Ley de Protección Animal de 2023 (2023 Animal Protection Act), sacrifice is strictly forbidden. A different (and allowed) thing is euthanasia, which implies ending the animal’s life BECAUSE there is no treatment for its condition, which is producing an

A Heartfelt Appeal for Help

unacceptable pain that cannot be relieved, not even by palliative care. As you can see, it’s not the case of the street cats you mention. Vets ourselves are not allowed at all to kill healthy animals. If you know about anybody who is planning to eliminate them, just report the Police.

According to the law Town Hall is responsible for animals without owner (because it’s dead or they never have had one). You can ask for some advice at local Animal Welfare Department.

On the other hand, it’s mandatory for looking after community cats to be registered at the Town Hall. Feeding animals at the street is not allowed. The only exception is community cats, but only in case the person who feeds them is been previously authorized to do it by the Town Hall.

"Three months ago, my dear friend Ditske sadly passed away. She lived in the Santara/ Evoca Living resort and had a huge heart for animals. She lovingly cared not only for her own cats, but also for the local homeless Santara cats, always providing food, water and safety on her terrace.

Her five beautiful cats are now looking for forever homes. They are between 4 and 10 years old - calm, affectionate, gentle companions who would be perfect for anyone living permanently in Gran Alacant. Older cats make wonderful pets: loving, purring, and settled.

For the past three months, I’ve been travelling to the property twice a day to care for a total of 10 cats, but sadly this situation cannot continue indefinitely."

Please, if you can open your heart and offer one of these lovely cats a warm, safe home, it would mean the world. Please share and help them find the loving families they deserve.

From Lockdown to Local Success

How one unexpected moment led to the creation of Somos Rentals

When Spain entered lockdown in March 2020, many businesses faced an uncertain future. For James, the founder of Somos Rentals, however, that moment became the starting point for building a successful property rental company that continues to grow today.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START SOMOS RENTALS?

Somos Rentals was born during one of the most uncertain moments of my career. For many years I managed a branch of one of the leading rental and sales agencies in the area. Toward the end of 2019, an opportunity arose for me to become a partner in another real estate agency, so I decided to take the leap. I started my new role on Monday, 16th March 2020, the very first day of the COVID-19 lockdown in Spain.

Almost overnight the property market came to a complete standstill. Like many people, I suddenly found myself facing a very uncertain future. With a family to support and bills to pay, I had to think quickly about how to adapt. Because the new agency focused exclusively on property sales, I decided to create a separate rental business that would complement rather than compete with it. By June 2020, Somos Rentals was up and running.

Within a few months, my wife Dayse and I had built a strong base of property owners and a steady income. By September I was able to leave the other agency on good terms and focus entirely on growing Somos Rentals. What started as a solution during a difficult time has grown into a thriving business, proof that sometimes unexpected challenges can lead to new opportunities.

WHY IS THIS AREA SO POPULAR WITH VISITORS AND RESIDENTS?

This part of the Costa Blanca offers an exceptional quality of life. We have beautiful beaches, stunning natural surroundings and a fantastic climate that allows people to enjoy outdoor living for most of the year. It’s also a very safe and welcoming environment, which makes

it ideal for families, couples and retirees alike. Add excellent transport links, great restaurants and plenty of local amenities, and it’s easy to see why so many people choose to spend time here.

The lifestyle is another huge attraction. During the summer months the evenings feel endless, with people enjoying long dinners on terraces, walks along the promenade and the many local fiestas that bring communities together. Even everyday routines can feel special. My drive to work takes me past the salt lakes, where you often see flamingos and incredible sunsets. It’s a commute I genuinely enjoy.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK?

One of the great pleasures of the job is visiting the wide variety of homes we manage. Every property has its own style and character, which keeps things interesting. But the most rewarding part is definitely the people. We work with wonderful clients, both property owners and tenants, from many different countries and backgrounds. Our aim is always to provide a friendly, personal service and make sure guests feel comfortable and happy during their stay.

Over time we’ve built strong relationships with many of our clients, and some have even become good friends. That personal connection is something we truly value.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO PROPERTY OWNERS THINKING ABOUT RENTING THEIR HOME?

The rental market has changed significantly in recent years, particularly with new regulations surrounding holiday rentals. However, demand for both holiday and long-term rentals remains very strong.

For many owners, renting their property can provide an excellent investment opportunity or additional income to help cover the costs of owning a second home. Holiday rentals are ideal for owners who still want to use their property themselves throughout the year, while long-term rentals usually involve tenants staying for a year or more and offer a more predictable income.

Both options work well depending on the owner’s priorities, so it’s important to explore the different possibilities and find the right approach.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES IN THE AREA TO RECOMMEND TO GUESTS?

One of my top recommendations is a boat trip to Tabarca Island, where visitors can snorkel in crystal-clear waters, a unique experience in this region.

Nature lovers often enjoy the Clot de Galvany nature reserve, which is perfect for walking or jogging, while the nearby salt lakes are famous for their wildlife, including flamingos.

For day trips, Elche is well worth visiting for its famous palm groves, while Alicante offers history, shopping and incredible views from the castle. Santa Pola itself is also a favourite, with its marina, promenade and excellent seafood restaurants. Families often enjoy Río Safari or Pola Park, which are both great options for children.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR SOMOS RENTALS?

As the business continues to grow, our focus is on expanding the team and increasing the number of properties we manage. This year we plan to bring in additional staff to support our growing portfolio and client base.

By growing carefully and sustainably, our aim is to offer a wider choice of properties while maintaining the personal, high-quality service that our clients value.

At the heart of Somos Rentals is a simple goal: creating great experiences for both property owners and guests while continuing to build a strong reputation in the local community.

GA WOMENS WALKING FOOTBALL

A NEW CHAPTER

Women’s Walking Football in Gran Alacant continues to grow, with new projects and fresh energy ahead. We are excited to share that, due to strong interest and commitment, the sessions will continue under the watchful eye of coach Jim Fraser, with support from GA Homefinders.

The focus of the sessions moving forward will be on fun and fitness. These sessions are open to everyone in Gran Alacant, whether you are a resident or just visiting for a holiday. Participants are encouraged to join in, have fun, and enjoy the experience without taking themselves too seriously, followed by a casual session debrief at the El Tio Chato cafeteria.

Sessions take place on Thursdays at the Astroturf pitch at the sports centre in Gran Alacant.

Happy Easter to all readers - but go easy on the chocolate!

The happy bunnies of the Gran Alacant Walking Football group have been enjoying an eggs-ellent time on the pitch of late with some good games - and not without quality at times. Numbers remain strong - although there is plenty of room for more players!

Walking football is an excellent way to keep fit and meet new people. Designed for the more mature gent (over 50) it is played at a more leisurely pace but still has a competitive edge! We play each Wednesday at 12 noon on the astroturf at the Polideportivo (Sports Centre) in Gran Alacant. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability or experience. We have a multinational membership where the common language is...football. Ages range from early fifties to over 70. If you want to come along, please arrive around 11.50am to allow for teams to be arranged but be mindful of students who may still be around. The facility now closes at 1pm so we need to be out of the showers quickly!

In addition, there are quarterly social meets (combined with the women’s group). So if you would like to join us at GAWF, or want to know a bit more, please get in touch (contact details below).

Walking football is well-established in the area. As well as our Wednesday group (GAWF) and the women’s group, there is the opportunity to play most weekdays between Gran Alacant and Santa Pola.

For members, please keep an eye on the Whatsapp group or the Facebook page for information regarding upcoming social events .

The Gran Alacant Darts League recently welcomed back an event that many local players have missed over the past few years: the Gran Alacant Lions Tournament. The friendly international tournament first began several years ago when Chris from the league was contacted by a team of darts players from Liverpool who were interested in coming to Gran Alacant for a few nights of competition.

The tournament quickly became a popular annual event, bringing together visiting players and the local darts community. Unfortunately, like many things, it came to a halt during COVID. This year the league was delighted to bring the tournament back and hopes it will once again become a regular fixture.
