We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month

Hi everybody!

This month you can enjoy so many different activities in Costa Blanca that is impossible to describe them all, but you can find all the information you need on our website www.turismosantapola.es In Santa Pola there is a cultural programme with plenty of activities to suit all tastes.

World Heritage Event 11th to 15th and “Nit de l’Alba” 13th with a fantastic display of fire works in Elche, and not less important and impressive “Castell de L’Olla” 12th in Altea - a beautiful combination with fireworks and music, just to give you an idea more than seven thousand kilos of fireworks powder will be burnt to celebrate this event!

Every day and in every little corner on the Costa Blanca you can enjoy a fiesta or a parade in different villages or towns. Main parades of Moors and Christians will be held in Aspe , Cocentaina, Elche 9th to 12th, Verger, Castell de Castells, Benilloba, Xixona 18th to 20th and Camp de Mirra. In August, you can also enjoy a really special events like “Misterio de Elche” Cultural

The first week in September will be the start of the local fiestas, 31st August, the inauguration, opening speech, 1st and 2nd the mock battles, conquer and reconquer of the Castle and 3rd of September, something not to be missed, the main parade of Moors and Christians. Bye bye for now.

Hello Everybody, Hope you are all enjoying the hot weather. It took a while to arrive but boy it has arrived in style … them cool evening winds we had early in the year seem a long time ago, I wouldn’t mind one or two of them now. Great to see the beach packed and more tourists about after a slow start this summer. Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 25 and Casper on page 50

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS:

but better late than never.

Big talking point to us all this month is the distinct lack of parking space and refreshment huts at our local beaches. The picture at the beginning of the summer season, sees a bar/cafĂŠ being dismantled, and those that put up their bar for the season, down by the little church, on the Santa Pola coast road, are not there this year.

However, it does not end there. But in mid July, as the picture shows, a different bar with toilets is being erected. Also the NOMO beach club just opened in Arenales del Sol. A bit late in the season,

If you would like to park your car near to the Carabassi beach, many of the parking places have been taken up by young trees, just planted, to keep you away. Good for the environment, but not for us locals and tourists. Who matter most? ********** A friend sent me this snake story We were sat in our garden and were visited by a snake!!!! Rang the vet for advice who said that Spanish snakes were not dangerous!!! One of our neighbours rang her policeman husband who said that in this country you must report the sightings of snakes to the police. So, we did this and after a while two police arrived by which time the snake had hidden itself in a drainage hole in our garden wall. So, they

could not catch it but said if it reappeared then we were to ring them straightaway.

safety studies will be four months with a budget of 453,218 euros. Finally an investment of 5 million euros. Will it ever happen? And if so. how long will it all take? ********** Why is being hot hot in Spain as apposed to hot in the UK, different. As soon as sunshine arrives in the UK, there are reports of deaths, melting roads etc etc.

So, not sure where it is at moment but we are keeping our door closed!!!! ********** Another step towards the new school on Gran Alacant The Gran Alacant school when built was for a total of 450 students. This magazine posted pictures when the new school was built, showing the sign telling us all that the school was for 450 pupils. This school now has over 900 youngsters, bursting at the seams. Two days after the end of the school year on Gran Alacant, both parents and teachers are eagerly waiting for this area of Santa Pola to have more educational facilities in order to decongest the Russian Vicenta, which houses more than 900 schoolchildren.

Here in Spain our hot hot is not for a few days, but for many many weeks. Our tar mac does not melt, we sensibly walk in the shade, and stay out of the hot sun, except of course when on the beaches. There is always a cooling breeze by the sea and coupled with sitting under an umbrella, you stay very comfortable. Talking of melting roads, out here the new road surface is not covered in stone chips, just a long length of tar mac. ********** I read that, at last, the police are to fine people parking their cars on the bus/train stops. So many times seeing cars park there means that the train/bus have to pull up on the road, stopping traffic behind it and therefore causing chaos, and making it difficult for the local transport to keep to schedule. ********** The new bus stop signs, see picture, start arguments. Is it BUS or SUB?!

To take this step, the City Council has to alter the usefulness of the land on which it is planned to build the second school. The modification of land planned for the General Plan, affecting the 13,000 square meter plot on which this school will be built. The use of this plot will change to educational use. As for the construction, there is still no date set for the laying of the first stone, and the bidding process is ongoing. Fourteen building projects for the school are being evaluated. The deadline for the drafting of the project, construction management and

Removals Advice from Regals Removals Who Are We? Regal Removals Ltd is a family business, run by husband and wife team Russell and Lizzy. Regal Removals are based in Kent with strong connections to the Costa Calida. We have over 10 years’ experience of removals to and from Spain and offer a dedicated and personal service. We pride ourselves on the quality of our work because our customers are our priority and so is our reputation. Packing Advice We understand that moving can be a stressful and busy time but the more you can prepare the smoother your move will be…

can be ordered online at very reasonable prices and come in packs of uniform sizes that are easy to stack. We would suggest smaller boxes for books, CD’s, crockery and other heavy items. For clothes, and kitchenware we recommend medium sized boxes or hanging garment boxes, these are even better as it saves on ironing when you unpack. Large boxes are ideal for fragile and lighter items such as pillows, duvets and lamps etc. Selecting Your Removal Company There are vital things to consider when selecting your removals company as well as price and availability. Being legal is not just about paying tax it is also about

Packing is all important, not only will good packing protect your items it will also save space and cost you less money! For example, if you have garden pots put them in sturdy boxes and pack around them with polystyrene chips or old newspapers, seal the top of the box so that they can be stacked and therefore will not take up valuable space on the floor of the truck. The same is true for televisions, vacuum cleaners, lamps to name a few. Always try and use appropriate boxes, they

When comparing your quotes check the company has a European Community Licence to ensure your goods are being transported legally. Regal Removals Ltd operates a 7.5 tonne lorry with 30 cubic metre capacity. We chose this truck because it is an ideal size vehicle for a full house move. It has twice the volume of a standard Luton Van and up to 4 times the weight allowance so we never travel with our vehicle overloaded.

with Jackie Canale

International Practicioner of Holistic Medicine, fully licensed & insured Hello readers, Welcome to my page, for those who don’t know me let me introduce myself, my name is Jackie Canale and I am a therapist working in Gran Alacant promoting holistic wellbeing wherever I can.

With the summer season in full swing I feel it is a good time to talk about water retention as I know many of my clients and myself suffer excess fluid in this heat. Do you suffer from water retention? Water retention is caused by excess fluid in body tissues. Signs of this can include swelling in the ankles, feet and hands, our weight can fluctuate, one day feeling quite comfortable the next we can feel a few kilos heavier, it can also make us feel stiff or ache. It can be caused by several factors, one

major one right now can be the hot weather we are experiencing others can be menopause, certain medical conditions, menstrual cycles, excessive intake of salt and so on. Little tips that can help to reduce this can include: Avoid dehydrating the body- drink lots of water, aim for at least 2 litres, especially in this heat. Add fruit to your water for that extra boost, lemon, oranges, cucumber anything, mix it up, it always good and also makes the water more refreshing if you are not too keen on drinking water itself. Avoid too much alcohol and caffeine. Eat potassium rich foods in your diet, such as bananas, apricots, peaches, raspberries, raisins, and spinach. Potassium in the body keeps the sodium levels stable helping to flush waste from the body tissues. Fibre rich foods like whole grains, nuts, vegetables also aid as a cleanser. Drinking cranberry juice or dandelion leaf tea will help, they are both natural diuretics. Protein rich foods such as yoghurts, fish, cottage cheese, chicken, chick peas, avocados are a good staple diet for aiding the body to rid excess fluid along with

regular exercise. Adding supplements to your daily routine can also be very beneficial, taking magnesium and/or a vitamin B6 helps to balance out the body. Batería de Castillitos and the Batería de Jorel, Cartagena

Driving Time: 2:00h Walking Time: Drive all the way to the Bateria Google maps directions: Batería de Castillitos, 30868 Cartagena, Murcia

My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further. Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes. August is a hot month and this walk is an easy one with beautiful views, interesting history and offers a perfect day trip away from the beach. Google maps finds Batería de Castillitos.

MIRROR CORNER Dear readers, This corner will be devoted to give you some help and emotional support. Using a well known psychological tool called “projection” I will hope to achieve this. Others expressing their feelings and situations seems to be one of the best ways to have a truly good look “inside” ourselves. To do this mechanism of empathy and projection (basic human emotional defence) we can create, recreate, build and rebuild different points of view about different situations. We grow on this basis. My proposal is for you to bring me different, real situations that can have an impact on our everyday lives, and that may also be an interesting topic to others. I encourage you to take an active part and bring me situations, ask me questions or some possible suggestions, even a consultation if required. This way we are all co-operating together in “mirror corners” to make it work for our own benefits and interests. This information from yourselves will all be kept in the strictest confidentiality, names, emails, telephone numbers will not appear, you can even leave it simply as ‘anonymous’ for ease.

responsibility, confidence and empathy.)

TURNING COMMON NEGATIVE FEELINGS INTO POSITIVE REALITIES This month I have decided to write a different type of article. It is based upon the statement ¨true words of different situations¨… I will describe people´s histories and explain what happened next. Think of this like a mirror, so you will be able to arrive to your own conclusions. 1) SUSSY (50) - HISTORY: Conflictive relationship with her mother. Trying to live her own life without the approval of her mother. Her mother has a very strong character (at least that is the impression). Sussy gives the same impression, although she is much sweeter. (She is working very hard on improving her self-esteem, assertiveness, and independence.) PHRASE: ¨ When things went wrong, I heard my mum saying… “I told you so!” 2) RALPH (45) – HISTORY: Problems to finish different choices and courses of action being taken. His family is a priority, and Ralph puts the blame on himself when situations didn’t end like expected. (He is working on learning to face different losses and his self-esteem.) PHRASE.- ¨ True self-compassion, means accepting your light and darkness¨. 3) ALISON (40) - HISTORY: She is not happy with her life, she feels she is in the middle of things that have nothing to do with her, she just suffers the consequences of living with them. (Working on insight,

PHRASE.- “I was bad, I don´t deserve happiness¨. 4) JOHN (53) - Runs a family hotel. Always complaining about the fact he “doesn’t have time for himself”. On top of that, his kids seem to be asking for his attention. Parents and friends always influence the decisions of the business. He also complains that he has no money to pay his employees. He travels abroad more than twice a year. (Working on learning to compromise, empathy, responsibility and independence in solving problems).

Your information will be kept in the strictest confidentiality. PHRASE.- ¨My family gets all of me¨. ¨ I have to be happy first¨. …Let´s work together and try to figure it out… What in general goes wrong in each case? You can easily guess, so I put it to you… From these cases we are going to create some tips, which confirm it is important to be positive and keep positive, in order to achieve success (all aspects included).

Situation 4: You are the one that always complains or at least pays attention to the ¨need of money¨. I have news for you … Start being grateful for the things that people are doing for you in the form of work or just by being kind with words and different actions. You will realize that money starts to go where it means to go…in the meantime, a sense of living in abundance will take place.

Lets see how positive you can be - you always have the option of not being positive! Situation 1: Making your own choices without the fear of failing or falling actually makes you grow. In the meantime you get that inner voice that says ¨what would happen if I did it¨? … There is no success without making our own choices, and lots of failures … so! Lets give it another try, with your own voice! Situation 2: Self compassion only serves if you stay quiet and make lots of decisions to stay in the same place, so…you don´t have to put the blame on you, you just have to be responsible, admit your own actions and make them better, in order to achieve the 100 percent goal…( it is not a figure, it is YOUR 100 and it takes time to achieve that desired goal ) Situation 3: You are thinking you were bad in the past? I have news for you!! You are alive, so try to be aware not do it again. Try to GIVE (rather than wait passively to be given) to the ones you ¨were bad to¨… things will start to change on your behalf.

My dear readers, I hope these pieces of advice make sense to you, and I will always welcome your ideas !! Thank you!!!!!! BEA

I would love for you to suggest to me some topics you want to know about, for sure I will have had some real topics related to it during my past work history, I have twenty years of folders to investigate. You can ask me any questions, and I will give you my contribution in the form of suggestion, hoping it can help you.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Cirque du Soleil - Totem Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 10 years now. My 8 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home.

This month we have been out and about to lots of our favourite places but really wanted to share our amazing evening watching the incredible new show by Cirque du Soleil called Totem. We first started seeing the posters and advertisements a few months ago and Ashlee asked me what it was about, so I explained that it was like an amazing circus show with a story and that this particular show was about humans. Ashlee said she would like to see it and having seen a Cirque du Soleil show in the Royal Albert Hall in London, I thought that the seats might be expensive. So I did some research, and learnt that Totem was described as “The

60

Odyssey of the Human Species” and that it “traces humankind’s incredible journey - from our original amphibian state to our ultimate quest for flight”. It sounded great and the tickets were not as much as I thought, especially for a show of this calibur (obviously it depends on where you sit etc, the VIP seats were definitely out of our reach!). A few weeks later, we drove past the big white tents and Ashlee shouted “look Mummy its Totem …… I really wish we could go and see it …..” So I revealed that I’d actually booked tickets and she was over the moon with excitement, although a little disappointed that she had to wait another 10 days!! So, on a warm Tuesday night in July, we set off about 90 minutes before the show started to make the short 25 min drive to the venue. I was a little worried about the parking situation as when booking the tickets online it states that parking can be an issue, but luckily, we were able to park just a short walk away. There was only a small queue at a bag check before we entered the outside area where there were lots of giant pictures that we took some photos with before collecting some refreshments and a program and

going to wait for them to open the doors. Once inside, the usher showed us to our seats and even gave Ashlee a cushioned booster that fitted over the back of the chair giving her a great elevated view. This was when we got our first look at the stage and it was truly amazing and soooo big. Although we were seated in the cheaper seats, the stage was actually a lot closer to us than I was expecting, which was great. The seats began to fill up and about 10 minutes before the show began the Cirque du Soleil clowns began walking around interacting with the crowd, helping to build the already high levels of excitement. With a polite reminder that there was to be no use of flash photography or video taking and that all mobiles needed to be switched to silent, the show began. IT WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING with acrobats swinging all over a dome structure that was in the centre of the stage. Their costumes were stunning and so detailed that they made their wearers look like the amphibians that we often only see in the zoo!!!! The whole performance had us and the rest of the audience sitting on the edge of our seats. The stage, sound effects, music, lighting and of course the performers themselves, were truly exceptional and the

atmosphere was electric!!! Throughout the show there were numerous occasions when the audience were able to participate with the funny clown characters and show their appreciation for the skill involved in the acrobatic and musical performances. They even included some Spanish traditions and music which was a really nice touch. The show ended with all the performers coming on stage and joining together for the final song/dance and Ashlee and I, along with the rest of the crowd, showed our appreciation by giving them a standing ovation. It really was a fabulous show and we thoroughly recommend it. As there are still tickets available until their last show in Alicante on the 19th August (before they move on to Zurich, Paris, London and Vienna), we didn’t want to tell you everything as we hope that some of you can experience it for yourselves. Just go to https://www. cirquedusoleil.com/totem to find availability and prices. Oh and one last piece of advice, as the inside of the tent is air conditioned, it can get a bit chilly so an extra layer or throw might be needed. Join us next month for some more fun “Out and About” Star & Ashlee xxx PS - The Holi Festival of colour to celebrate Petita the Elephants’ birthday will be in Terra Natura on Saturday 18th August Read more about this in our article that was published in August 2017.

DRAMA IN A TEACUP

rit

The sun was hot. No real surprise but then, there couldn’t be any surprises left on this journey. The beach bar was in sight, at last. He had shaken off the two shadows who followed him from the hotel. Avoided the maniac on the motorcycle who chased him down the alley and then smashed head on into the dump truck. Unfortunate, but sympathy for the opposition was waning. He was now in the clear to deliver the package to the “guy with the bandana”, in the beach hut. He had been dragged into this by the Agency when they found him living in quiet seclusion on the Costas. Believing his previous business was a distant memory; he had eased himself out of retirement and stared to take on minor work helping out people he met in bars. That was a mistake. He rarely made mistakes but complacency had got the better of him. When he made enquiries about an apparent recluse the flag was obviously raised in some office somewhere. The recluse was clearly a recluse for a reason. It was a silly mistake. It didn’t take long for the initial spotters to appear in his usual haunts. Nothing too obvious. Two girls having a good time but reluctant to make too much conversation. Then seen sitting by the pool but never getting wet. Ready to move at a moment’s notice.

end car, a house or a gun, diamonds were forever. It looked simple enough but he was now cautious. If his “friends” had found him so easily, what of the opposition. The motor cycle had passed the front of his apartment block several times after his meeting in the hotel, but it was not at the hotel when he went back to collect the package. Neither had he noticed the two men... The exchange was simple enough. He sat by the pool bar and ordered a long drink. The two girls were there, one sunbathing, the other was reading her magazine while scanning the area like a ventriloquist’s dummy. Very professional; this was a joke; and it was on him. Finally, she made the move. Casually; she stood and drifted passed the bar, stopping momentarily to read a menu and dropping the bag in his lap. This was pathetic. He headed for the door. The two men were on him before he crossed the street, but they had not checked out the local area and he shook them off in one of the market stall runs. The motor cyclist picked him up as he left, and then met the truck.

Finally, the man appeared. He was almost a disappointment. Jacket, tie and waistcoat. No attempt whatsoever to blend in. The pitch was very straightforward. “We have all the details we need to put you out there. No hiding place. Just a small delivery job and we leave you alone. If you are in, meet me here in the morning, if not……” Why did they never finish a sentence when you wanted them to?

He walked to the sand dunes and then ran across the sand to the hut. His pace was slowing as the sand was becoming softer. It seemed to be gripping his feet and dragging him back. He began to sink. It was turning into quicksand. The more he pushed on towards the hut, so the deeper he went into the sand. He stopped and lay back on the moving surface of the soft ground. His training told him, that if he spread his weight there was a chance that he could remain on the surface long enough to come up with some plan. It was not happenings, he continued to sink. As his mouth sank beneath the surface he tasted the soapy liquid.

It was three days later when one of the girls finally passed him the package. Small, light, in a bag; probably diamonds. It was the usual method of payment without traceability. Whether it was for a high-

Soapy! He woke with a start and looked down at the book he held in his wet hands. Another good read ruined. “I must get the hotel to put non-slip mats in this bath”, he thought.

SANTA POLA

23rd Annual Swim Tabarca –Santa Pola (XXIII Travesia Nado Tabarca – Santa Pola)

H

as experienced by Geoff Young

ailed as the best open swim in Spain (and amongst the top 100 world wide), Santa Pola hosted the 23rd edition of the annual swim from Tabarca to Varadero Beach in Santa Pola, a distance of 5.9 km if you swim in a straight line, but winds and currents push you off course with most competitors swimming 6.5km. Make no mistake about it, this is a tough event, and being an open water swim, is fraught with dangers, from tides, currents, waves, cold water, stinging jelly, fish, to sheer exhaustion. At the finishing line the Cruz Roja medical staff have an uphill task to treat the cold, the cramped, the exhausted and those stung by jelly fish. So why do many thousands of hopeful competitors of all ages and abilities apply for the 1600 places in the event? The bidding process starts in February each year and by March the “lucky” 1600 have

been notified of their place in the event. Entrants this year came from 14 different countries, with a minimum age of 15 years of age. For some, training is an on-going routine, but for others there will be 14 weeks of intensive training of between 3000-5000mtrs of swimming per week. For those competitors in northern climes, finding somewhere to train in open water, especially between March and July, will be very difficult. The event organisation for the swim is 10-12 months in the planning with Club Deportivo Natacion Alone –Santa Pola, working closely with the Ayuntamiento in Santa Pola, including the Office for Tourist Information (Jose Manuel Blasco) and many more, without whose huge effort and personal commitment, the event would not be staged. The swimmers gather at the port of

A fleet of ferries is available to transport the contestants, officials and spectators to the Island of Tabarca for the 07.30 start. By 06.00 most competitors have collected their obligatory kit accessories consisting of an electronic ankle chip, an orange buoy which is secured to their waste, a swimming cap displaying their competitor number, and an emergency whistle, to be used in cases of emergency to call for assistance during the swim.

which also act as resting places for those in difficulty. Supporting the swimmers at sea is an armada of kayaks, inflatable boats and all manner of craft positioning themselves within easy reach of the swimmers. At this point it is an incredible sight with 1600 orange buoys bobbing about in the open sea, surrounded by the froth created by 3200 arms propelling the competitors to Santa Pola. At this point, the race is carefully controlled, and swimmers must reach certain distances within certain times otherwise their race is over and they have

In the water the mass of orange buoys bobbing around on the “frothed” water is clearly visible as one by one the weary and the lame drag themselves to shore and onto the finishing line. patient can be moved to pet visits area. As anyone can imagine, the animal must have an updated passport or vaccination book, must be free of zoonotic diseases (transmissible to humans), and in case of dogs, they must be vaccinated against leptospirosis. In other words, they must be healthy and have all the legal requirements (including microchip) updated.

This month we have some good news: companion pets will be allowed to visit their owners at Torrevieja and Vinalopó (Elche) hospitals. First of all, this is not an animal-assisted therapy; it just consists of people that is being at the hospital, and even chronic patients who usually spend a lot of time at the hospital, will be allowed to be visited by the pets which live with them. It will be also appliable in case of terminal patients who are about to pass away and want to say goodbye to their pets. This is a very common procedure in Florida and California hospitals, but not in Europe or Spain. Nowadays there is only a similar project in Ibiza. These pet visits will take place in special facilities placed apart from hospital rooms, and initially every patient may apply for this service. Authorizing the visit of the pet or not logically depends on the doctor IN CHARGE, who will consider general condition of the patient, risk of allergic reactions, emotional condition, and if the

Apart from this requirements, the animal will need a specific Veterinary Health Certificate every time they are going to the hospital, which will certificate the animal has had an internal and external antiparasitic treatment and is not suffering diarrhoea, vomiting or coughing. This certicificate is valid for 3 days. The law that will regulate this service is still an incomplete project, and, so far, it doesn’t mention other companion pets different from the dog, such as cats, rabbits or birds. In our opinion, these are great news, and we hope they have the law ready as soon as possible.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

KESTREL

Welcome to the hot days, for some people the best time of the year. You can lounge by your swimming pool or on the beach, ice cold drink to hand and a parasol to move beneath if you are beginning to crisp at the edges. You can strip off layers of clothing, and if necessary decamp to that part of Carabassi beach which apparently allows such things. You can wipe the sweat from your brow and put on your air conditioning if it all gets a bit too much. But if you’re a bird, you don’t have these solutions. You are covered with a layer of dense feathers which you can’t strip off, and you might be stuck in a nest like the two birds in my photo with no access to water and little cover from the rays of the sun. So what do you do? This pair are two of at least four young Kestrels which I found on a very hot day in their nest in a palm tree, just a few days before they were ready to fledge. They are employing one of the main techniques which birds use to cool down, which is called gular fluttering, in which they open their beaks wide and vibrate their neck muscles, promoting evaporation of the moisture in their neck and lungs thus cooling themselves down.

Of course birds have a higher metabolic rate than we humans do, the average bird has a body temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius), so they need to control their body heat even more. Bare skin patches on the legs, feet, and face allow greater heat loss than if every area were covered with feathers. Even small patches such as a fleshy eye ring can help dissipate heat. Some birds can even swell those patches to increase the surface area if they are hotter and need to cool off more quickly. Another method is to fluff out their feathers, allowing air to get in and about them, or the parents may cover them with spread wings. Often this is not always possible, the need to hunt and provide the youngsters with food is their most pressing requirement. Of course these young Kestrels don’t have access to fresh water, so how do they keep hydrated? The answer lies in their diet – the parents will bring them prey items such as rodents, small birds and large insects which contain enough water to keep them going – meat has a high water content, which is one reason why you rarely see raptors at watering places such as are found in the Clot. Kestrels are by far the commonest raptors in our area, you will see them both in the Clot and in the surrounding countryside. Watch for them as they use their favourite hovering technique – rock-steady in the air while they scan the ground below, then dive down and grab their prey. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
