We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from our Gran Alacant Councillor, Loreto Cascales, as we have since May 2005. It is our perogative at the magazine, NOT to update this 2005 picture, as we all looked a great deal younger!!! TAXIS FROM AIRPORT A young couple were walking past us, dragging suitcases and looking lost. When we asked them if we could help they said a grumpy airport taxi driver had dumped them as he could not find the address they gave him. (Av Carabasi, Costa Hispania). A common event, but not a very good advert for new holidaymakers coming for a break on our urbanisation.
Is it any wonder that unlicensed drivers are sent to pick them up to make sure they arrive at the correct location. --------------------------------------The school on Gran Alacant is still expanding with extra pupils this year, making the addition of two mobile classrooms necessary. However, for the first time, the numbers in the Santa Pola schools has decreased. The Councillor for Education, Training and Employment, Mary Jose Catala, confirmed the statements made last week by Pepe CĂscar, (which we reported on last month), indicating that the second school in Gran Alacant will be one of the first to be constructed in the province of Alicante. The site reserved for the new school is nearly opposite the farmacia. The age group will be the same as the school down the hill. --------------------------------------You may have noticed that in this
4
years Santa Pola fiestas it was decided not to include the bull running through the streets of Santa Pola. The Department of Fiestas de Santa Pola Town Hall, in consensus with the support of the festive entities, took the decision to remove the bull running being held on the night of August 31 and to allocate the cost of this event to social assistance for needy families. In the past year there had been in Spain a 10% increase in accidents in this type of event and there was a very recent death of a 16 year old boy in Huesca. Ana Blasco said that "the event of the heifer costs the Town Hall about 14,000 euros, to which must be added the cost of municipal work, so that increases to about 18,000 in total. The money it would cost is to be allocated entirely to the Department of Social Services to help needy families in these hard times of crisis.
The feedback to this decision has been very favourable. --------------------------------------There is now a bus service between the Elche hospital and Santa Pola. "this is a much needed service for Santapoleros, already offered in some places after the efforts of Mayor Miguel Zaragoza a few years ago, but due to its high demand it was necessary to expand. Starting Thursday, August 23, all services stop at the entrance of the hospital.
THE GRAN ALACANT AND SANTA POLA THEATRE GROUP (GASP) PRESENT "ROUND AND ROUND THE GARDEN" BY ALAN AYCKBORN.
In a Sussex summer garden, something scandalous lies in wait. Norman is determined to take sister-in-law Annie away for the weekend. But, will wife Ruth find out? And what about nice-butdim Vet, Tom, who has hopes of Annie - or does he? Will he ever be brave enough to make his feelings known? Will Mother ever leave her bed? Is the cat really always ill, or just attention seeking? Is Reg really a human sat-nav? Will Ruth ever wear her glasses? All these questions, and more, will be answered hilariously on Sunday 14th and Monday 15th October at the Salon de Actos, Sunday 14th & Monday 15th Santa Pola Life Resort, Gran Alacant at 7:30pm. Tickets only ₏5, to include a drink at the interval. Reservations: phone 966 181 113, 966 181 194 or 628 774 461 or email gasptheatre@hotmail.co.uk

Antonio Perez wanted to thank the cooperation and understanding of SUBUS Group, especially Victor Galan, and to the Department of Transportation of the City of Elche". The cost of the ticket for the journey between Santa Pola and Elche or vice versa is 1.45 euros, which will rise to 1.50 in September with the VAT increase. You can buy a voucher for 10 trip journey downgrade to 1.15 euros and there are discounts of 30% for people over 65 years, and for many families ranging between 20% and 50% This service has been asked for by Gran Alacant residents and next month we will try to get the bus times for you from GA to Santa Pola, to catch the hospital bus. --------------------------------------An email to the magazine: Dear Sandra & Barry, What a disappointment, we went to the monthly car boot sale on sunday in the car park outside the medical centre, as we did last month and again there were about six stalls and no people. The stalls were all manned by Spanish apart from two. Where are all the English that like car boots, the stall holders were all very sad that there were few customers. It´s a matter of if we don't use it we will loose it, so come on all you booters get up there and make a show. Maybe it needs to be advertised more as many people don't realise its even on, maybe this is where the Gran Alacant Advertiser could help by putting it in the magazine each month with the date in the "Whats On". I for one will be sorry to see it stop as i have bought several bargains over the last few months. Regards Valerie Haynes ---------------------------------------

An email to the magazine:
Barry & Sandra, Please could raise this point with Loreto at your monthly meeting. We had a communal bin outside house Calle Noruega 22/5, which has been moved to join 2 other bins outside the junction of Calle Noruega 22/calle Belgica 47, making 3 bins in one place. It was much needed there, and the 3 bins are constantly full, but not to the expense of our bin!! Everyday since it has been moved, people still put their rubbish at the ‘empty space’ ! we then take it to the Bin rather than leave it to be broken open by cats etc. ‘Our bin’ (outside house Calle Noruega 22/5) is used by people on Calle Beligica, Calle Luxemborgo, by walking down the ‘little road’ by the first crossroads on Calle Belgica, they are then getting to the empty space and leaving the rubbish! They have a long walk to another bin. Please can we have our bin back, but not at the expense of the 3 bins! Thank you Barry & Sandra for raising this! Best Regards
Tracey
Loreto said that the single bin of the three was never full, but the two together were always over full, so the empty bin has been moved to the overflow ones.
Loreto phoned the bin men who said they will clear the area now and again if people dump their rubbish by the bin that is no longer there, but could not put another bin in the place. They will not pick up any rubbish left on a regular basis, it is up to the people to use the bins, not dump the rubbish in the roadway.
7
Talking about rubbish!!! Remember we spoke about 750 euro fines being issued for letting your dog foul and not picking it up, and dumping green rubbish by the bins, on the roads and pavements. In 2 months there has been a total of 7,000 euro of fines issued.
Ever wondered what work is taking place on the right of the N332 from
The choice is yours.
To help with the dumping of garden rubbish, the council is to set up the start of an eco park on Gran
New eco park site entrance. Turn around just before the lighthouse Alacant. It will be sited just before the lighthouse at the top of the hill turning down a small roadway on the right between the telephone masts and council buildings. It will initially be manned in the mornings and a gate will be opened to let you in with your car, to off load your garden waste. Hopefully, in time, the area will be expanded. -------------------------------------We are still having a few stories told to us about how unhelpful some receptionists are at the health clinic. Is it just a few isolated stories or is there a problem there. Any comments??????? You can either email or telephone us at the magazine, email address and telephone number on the front of the magazine. ---------------------------------------

Gran Alacant to Santa Pola at the electricity station?? IBERDROLA will accrue an investment of more than ₏ 6 million in the construction of the new transformer substation of Santa Pola, which will allow them to distribute electricity to approximately 100,000 points of supply in the area. The CEO of Energy of the Generalitat Valenciana, Antonio Cejalvo, visited the works of this installation accompanied by the deputy mayor of the town, Incarnation Mendiola, the Councillor for Infrastructure, Loreto Serrano, director IBERDROLA Distribution Valencia and Murcia, Francisco Raga, and the CEO of the Company in the Community, Julian Bolinches. The new substation, which will replace the existing power distribution facility that is located on the same site, incorporates cutting edge technology that will facilitate an increase in installed capacity and a decrease in land occupied. With the new plans for the Santa Pola area, which includes the golf course, all of this increased infastructure has to take place to cope with the extra housing, roads, lighting etc. ---------------------------------------

The Town Hall has been given a quote of 1,000 euro to repair the damage caused by vandals to the fountain on the roundabout at the bottom of the maxcoop hill. The Town Hall will try to use their own workmen to help keep the repair bill down. --------------------------------------There are a few problems at the moment with youths stoning cars, the local bus and the tourist train!! We would hope that if the parents of these idiots knew they would punish them, What mindless kids they are.
Work on the new market stopped for a while as talks took place over extra funds being required as the project was going over the projected costs. This has now been resolved and the site, hopefully, will be ready before Christmas. --------------------------------------The area by the school which has been prepared for car parking is attracting loads of dog fouling, causing bad smells. Hopefully just right for big 750 euro fines!!!!! more news next month!!!!!!!!!!

Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica – Where do they go? Wonder no more ! ! ! It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird which lives an extremely ordered and complex life. The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life, as well as maintaining a form of compassionate contact with its offspring throughout its life. If a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social circle have been known to dig holes In the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into and buried. The male penguins then gather in a circle around the fresh grave and sing: "Freeze a jolly good fellow" "Freeze a jolly good fellow." Then they kick him in the ice hole.

Councillor Loreto Cascales translated into English. Social Events On the club's social side at the end of August, a sausage and mash evening was held by the Monte Mar swimming pool. This was a very enjoyable evening and the entertainer was brilliant.
At the beginning of this month about 50 club members also enjoyed a trip to Andalucia staying in a good hotel just outside of Seville. We had a day trip in Seville where I am sure the ladies enjoyed the many shoe and dress shops. Some of us had a bus trip around Seville and we ended the day on a boat trip on the

A recipe from
Sandra’s Cookbook
which you can read online at:- www.sandrascookbook.com compiled by Sandra Bonathan (not Sandra from this magazine)
Almond Ice Cream A pure white, luxuriously creamy ice cream. So easy, so simple and oh so tasty! Make sure you use a good quality almond extract. If you like, you can swirl in some chopped toasted nibbed almonds at the end but we like it smooth. Is it necessary to have a machine? Yes, I think it is, to get the best, smooth, professional result. If you like decent ice cream, a machine need not be expensive these days. Ingredients
1x 300g tub of full fat cream cheese. Cold milk (can be anything, full fat or skimmed) ½ cup sugar 1 tsp almond extract Method Empty the cheese into a jug.Fill the cheese carton with cold milk, add to jug. Add sugar and extract and gently whisk till smooth (just by hand with a small whisk or fork). Freeze in machine according to manufacturers instructions. Try not to eat it all by yourself...

Last month we carried an article from the Farmacia telling us of new regulations. Below, we have information in changes to the health system out here in Spain, which the health centre has been good enough to supply us with. CONSIDERATIONS RD 16/2012 RD 16/2012 fifth final provision, Article 7, Section 5:
The nationals of a member state of the European Union or another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area will be required to apply in person to the foreign office of the province where intend to stay or take up residence or, failing that, to the Police Station, for entry in the Central Registry of Foreigners. Such request is OBLIGATORY and MUST be made within three months from the date of entry into Spain, effectively you will immediately be issued a certificate of residency which will contain the name, nationality and address of the registrant, NIE number and date of registration. Every citizen of a member state of the European Union or another State party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area have the right of residence in the territory of Spanish State for a period exceeding three months if:
a) You are a worker . b) Has for himself and members of his family, enough resources so as not become a burden on the social assistance in Spain during the period of residence and sickness insurance covering all risks in Spain .
Other conditions are:
- Demonstrate sufficient resources not to become a burden on the social assistance in Spain. - Demonstrate that you have health insurance ( this case it applies to pensioners of those countries that have an agreement with the Spanish State)
What has changed: - Previously being on the local census was enough to access the Social security System From now on to enjoy the benefits of the public health system it is necessary to hold the insured status, indicating Article 3 section 2 a) Being self employed person or worker paying into the the Spanish Social Security. b) Hold the status of pensioner Social Security system.
c) Being a recipient of any other provision of social security, including benefit and unemployment benefit.
d) Have exhausted the benefit or unemployment benefit and appear inscribed at the appropriate office as unemployed and not crediting the insured status by any other title.
e) In those cases that do not meet any of the assumptions previously established, persons of Spanish nationality, or some Member States of the European Union, European Economic Area or Switzerland, residing in Spain, and foreigners holding a permit to residence in Spanish territory, may hold the
status of ¨ insured ¨ providing they do not exceed a certain income limit. And not having an income beyond certain regulations. Then, who is affected by the RD?
- Foreigners not resident in our country, ie tourists and residents in these cases may have a European Health Card (EHIC), which in below is limited to periods of up to 6 months, and only entitles attention for life-threatening emergencies. - Foreign residents whose income exceeds the limit determined regulations.
- In both cases foreign retirees whose home countries have agreement with the Social Security (England, Holland, Germany, France, etc..), for example, the British government has an agreement that pays ÂŁ3,500 per resident and month, so the retired English resident has the same rights as the Spanish.
In short, any alien living in our country for more than three months, MUST apply for a residence permit, for which they must demonstrate: - They have private insurance
- They have sufficient resources to avoid being a burden to the Spanish State
The only exception to the rule are retirees whose home countries have an agreement with the Spanish State.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE
In my previous articles I’ve shown you a few birds that need a close examination to positively identify them, many are Spanish specialities and quite rare back home in the UK, but here’s a nice and easy bird for you to look out for, there are usually a few pairs on the main pool in the Clot, and they are also well-known in Britain. There are more in Spain during the winter months as Northern birds very wisely come south for some sun, but they are present throughout the year as well.
It’s easy at first glance to realise why this duck is called a Shoveler, or Pato cuchara (Spoon Duck) in Spanish. You just cannot miss that enormous spatulate beak, which is a clever way of saying that it’s got a conk like a dinner plate, and by that’s the main reason for its success as a breeding bird – it is a very widespread duck indeed, and can be found on all Mark Etheridge continents except for Australia and Antarctica. It has very little competition in its feeding method, which is to use that beak to sift through the mud at the bottom of shallow pools and extract the small invertebrates that live there, as well as being ideal for just skimming the surface where flies and beetles dwell. The beak is equipped with small, comb-like structures called lamellae on the edge of the bill that act like sieves, which gives them an advantage over other ducks, with which they do not have to compete for food resources during most of the year.
CLOT?
My pictures show the male in all his finery, and the female – as is usual with most duck species – a rather insignificant brown bird that you could well miss if it weren’t for the size of her hooter and her bright orange legs. They don’t seem to mind each other’s facial adornments however, and a pair will stay together throughout the year, sometimes loosely associating with other Shoveler couples, but not in large flocks like other duck species. They are very quiet ducks unlike the common quacking Mallard, in fact they are quite undemonstrative altogether and even the male courtship consists of a simple bobbing motion of the head and some low-volume grunts, these probably as a result of the effort of waving that heavy bill up and down.
It is not an endangered species given the wide distribution of the world population which is about 4 million birds, but like just about every other duck species it is frequently hunted and there is also the danger of lead poisoning to these birds from discarded shotgun pellets. See you next month.
