Bolton School Primary Division Junior Boys’ School Wednesday 6th March
Spring Term, 2024 — WEEK B
From Mrs. Faulkner This week, we are all very focused upon reading and are looking forward to hearing all about the boys’ favourite books and seeing their various costumes as we all prepare to celebrate World Book Day tomorrow. I have heard of lots of interesting ideas so far, including one young man who is planning to be the wardrobe from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe!

Behind all of the colour and costumes, there is, of course, the hugely important theme of the value of reading as that is perhaps the single most important thing that can be done to support boys’ learning across the curriculum.
Through books, the boys gain access to other worlds, whether those are imaginary or real and continue to develop their ever growing vocabulary. We are constantly striving to develop the boys’ engagement with reading and do understand that some boys find it more enjoyable than others, other times a usually very keen reader can just fancy a bit of a break and perhaps either stops reading or goes back to something you might consider to be ‘too easy’ for him. This is all a part of how we develop as a reader, I know that there are points in time when I want to read something simple and choose a piece of children’s literature, or perhaps what some would consider a trashy novel, other times I’m ready for something a bit more involved to challenge my thinking. All forms of reading have their place and value, so please do continue to encourage your son to make those choices about his reading and perhaps model good reading behaviours at home too. This week, we have announced a new group of Year 6 Monitors who are all keen to shoulder the many and varied responsibilities which come with those roles. I would like to thank those monitors who have served us very well indeed in the first half of the year, they will be invited to be the first boys enjoying ‘top table’ lunch on Friday. Well done and thank you very much indeed everyone.
Well done to the two quiz teams who took part in the national online quiz last week. There were 285 teams from across the country, and it was a very high-scoring competition. Team 2 came 41st overall and Team 1 came 26th. Team 1 progress to the semifinal next week. Well done everyone, it was very close.
