As August gives way to September, the Hill Country starts settling back into its familiar rhythm—school is back in session, fall events are filling the calendar, and one of Kendall County’s most beloved traditions is right around the corner. In this issue, we’re excited to introduce you to Hill Country Pottery and artist Brian Burckhardt, whose colorful, handcrafted pottery is inspired by the beauty and character of the Texas Hill Country. From everyday mugs and bowls to one-of-a-kind pieces, Brian’s work is a wonderful reminder that art doesn’t have to simply sit on a shelf—it can be part of the moments and traditions that make up our everyday lives. Speaking of tradition, this year marks an incredible milestone: the 120th Kendall County Fair! For generations, the fair has brought our community together, and we’re excited to celebrate its history and the people who continue to keep this longtime Kendall County tradition going strong. We also take another look into our area’s past with this month’s First Families of Kendall County, featuring the George Werner family and their place in our local history. And we’re excited to introduce something new! Beginning with this issue, Sylvia Stadler, owner of Skylar Blue, joins us with a new monthly pet feature, Pet Talk. Each month, Sylvia will share helpful information,
tips and a little pet-loving fun for all of us who consider our four-legged friends part of the family. On the practical side of life, our real estate feature tackles a difficult but important question: What happens to the house when you lose a spouse? It’s a situation many families eventually face, and we hope the information shared in this issue can offer some helpful guidance when making those decisions. Celebrating 120 Years of the Kendall County Fair A Tradition Rooted in Community and Boerne Heritage

For 120 years, the Kendall County Fair has been much more than a Labor Day weekend celebration. It's been a place where neighbors become friends, traditions are passed from one generation to the next, and the spirit of Kendall County comes alive. As we prepare for the 120th Kendall County Fair, September 3–6, 2026, we invite you to look back at the rich history behind one of Boerne's oldest and most cherished events.

Our Beginning
The story of the Kendall County Fair began more than a century ago when local residents recognized the importance of bringing the community together through agriculture, education, and fellowship. In 1903, citizens of Kendall County gathered for a mass meeting to formally organize what would become the Kendall County Fair Association. Just two years later, in 1905, the very first fair was held at the Opera House in downtown Boerne. The event gave local families an opportunity to exchange agricultural knowledge, share recipes, showcase their handiwork, and strengthen the bonds of a growing community. What began as a simple gathering quickly grew into one of the Texas Hill Country's most beloved annual events.
The Early Days
As enthusiasm continued to grow, so did the need for a permanent home. In 1913, the Ferdinand Ludwig Von Herff family generously deeded 55 acres of land to the Kendall County Fair Association, the very grounds where the fair is still held today. The deed also included a provision prohibiting the sale of the property, ensuring the fairgrounds would remain dedicated to serving future generations. That same year, the Association was officially incorporated and granted a nonprofit corporate charter by the State of Texas. Strong leadership helped lay the foundation for the fair's continued success. H.O. Adler was elected as the Association's first president, while Martha Fabra (Mrs. E.P. Heye) served as the first Lady Manager, helping organize and guide the early years of the fair. continued on page 10 boernebusinessmonthly.com

Traditions Through the Years
While much has changed over the decades, the fair's most treasured traditions continue to bring generations together. One of its most beloved attractions is the Homestead Heritage Exhibit Hall, often considered the heart of the annual fair. For generations, Kendall County residents of all ages have proudly entered baked goods, quilts, artwork, photography, handcrafted items, and countless other exhibits in friendly competition. Beyond the exhibits themselves, the hall preserves the fair's history through photographs, memorabilia, and displays that allow visitors to take a walk through more than a century of memories. Another longtime favorite is the Queen's Court Scholarship Pageant. Since the first Fair Queen, Bonnie Lee Kemp (Mrs. Carl H. Molberg), was crowned in 1949, young women have represented the Kendall County Fair Association at community events, parades, and special functions while building confidence, developing leadership skills, and creating lifelong friendships. Of course, no Kendall County Fair would be complete without the excitement of the nightly rodeos. For decades, rodeo fans have packed the
grandstands to watch top competitors, making the rodeo one of the fair's signature attractions. Combined with outstanding live entertainment, family activities, and timeless traditions, the fair continues to offer something for every generation.

Today, the Kendall County Fair has grown into a threeday celebration with something for everyone. From thrilling nightly rodeos and nationally recognized live entertainment to carnival rides, shopping vendors, livestock shows, delicious fair food, contests, exhibits, and family-friendly activities, there's no shortage of ways to make lasting memories. When Losing a Spouse Changes More Than Your Family
O
One of the hardest conversations I have with clients isn't about buying or selling a home. It's about what happens after the loss of a spouse. Many Texans assume that because they've paid off their home or built significant equity over the years, they'll be financially secure if something happens to their husband or wife. Unfortunately, that's not always how it works. The financial changes following the death of a spouse often happen quietly. Household income drops, tax rules change, Medicare premiums may increase, and suddenly the same home that felt comfortable for two people becomes much more expensive for one person to maintain. Estate planning professionals sometimes refer to this com-

bination of changes as the "widow tax." It's not actually a tax, but rather a series of financial rules that can create unexpected challenges during an already difficult season of life. IN TEXAS, THE HOME CAN BECOME BOTH A BLESSING AND A BURDEN Across Texas, many widows remain in homes they've lived in for twenty, thirty, or even forty years. The mortgage may be paid off, but that doesn't mean the costs disappear. Property taxes, homeowners insurance, maintenance, utilities and repairs continue whether one person lives in the house or four. While Texas has worked to provide additional property tax relief through homestead exemptions, insurance costs have climbed dramatically in recent years, especially after severe
weather events. Those expenses can quickly consume a much larger portion of a surviving spouse's monthly income. For many families, the home represents security, memories and independence. Selling isn't simply a financial decision—it's an emotional one. That's why understanding the financial implications before making any decisions can make a tremendous difference. TEXAS COMMUNITY PROPERTY RULES CAN WORK IN YOUR FAVOR Here's one piece of good news for Texas homeowners. Because Texas is a community property state, many surviving spouses receive what's called a "full step-up in basis" when their spouse passes away. In plain English, that can significantly reduce—or even eliminate—the capital gains taxes that might otherwise be owed when the home is eventually sold. That doesn't mean every situation is the same. The way the property is titled still matters, and every family's circumstances are different. But compared to many other states, Texas law often provides an important tax advantage that many homeowners don't even realize they have. One thing I've learned over the years is that some of the most expensive decisions aren't bad decisions—they're delayed decisions. Grief makes it difficult to think about taxes, legal deadlines or whether it's time to sell a home. That's completely understandable. But having the right professionals around you early—a trusted estate planning attorney, CPA and real estate advisor—can help you understand your options before important deadlines quietly pass. First Families of Kendall County The George Werner Family
George Werner 1827 – 1892

ponsored by the Genealogical Society of Kendall County (GSKC), The First Families of Kendall County project began in 1999. The purpose of this project is to recognize the living descendants of persons instrumental in founding and settling of the area encompassed by present day Kendall County, Texas and to preserve the history of their families and the county. To date, 630 applications have been approved for 352 different individuals. One hundred seventy-two (172) Founders and Early Settlers have been documented and recognized. They represent one hundred forty (140) different families in Kendall County. There are two hundred seventy-nine (279) volumes of First Family notebooks on the shelves at the Family History Place. Here we will share with you some of the stories of those First Families who settled this beautiful area of the Texas hill country. We hope you enjoy!

Christina Caroline Marquardt 1842 – 1884 by James Hurst
In the April 1875 newspaper ad pictured here, George Werner offers a reward for the return of four missing horses. Family stories tell of Comanche Indian raids at George and Caroline’s ranch near Sisterdale, where they would barricade themselves inside their home until the Indians left. One wonders whether there might be a connection. George Werner was born in Kassel, Hesse, on January 30, 1827. He appears to have immigrated around 1853, since when he registered to vote in 1867, he said he had been in the United States for fourteen years. On August 27, 1859, he got his marriage license while living in Gillespie County. His bride-to-be, Christina Caroline Marquardt, was born in Rothenacker, Saxony, Prussia, on August 30, 1842, and arrived in Sisterdale with her family in 1854. Their license reads: “This is to certify that George Werner of Gillespie County, and Christine Caroline F. Marquard [sic] of Blanco County, were with their mutual consent lawfully joined together in matrimony which was solemnized by me in the
presence of credible witnesses. Given at Sisterdale, this 10th day of September, A.D. 1859. Ernst Kapp, J.P., Blanco C. Pr. VI.” The names of the witnesses are not given. In February 1860, George applied for a land patent on 160 acres adjacent to his father-inlaw’s farm, and that same year he became a naturalized citizen of the United States in Gillespie County. The patent was granted on July 7, 1862, by the same Justice of the Peace who married them, Ernest Kapp. We learn from the patent that the property is “situated on land known as Vaco Camp about two miles east of Sisterdale.” Vaco translates to “Vacant” or “Unoccupied.” When Kendall County was formed in 1862, George Werner’s brand was the 24th to be registered in the new county. In 1863, George and Caroline had the first of ten children, Louise, born on January 13. Emily (Wieland) was born a year later, on February 2. Natalie (Heiligmann) was born on April 8, 1865, and Mary (Ranzau) on September 29, 1867. Ernstina was born on June 4, 1870, but does not appear on the 1870 census, taken in August. The other children were Amalia (Marquart), born January 28, 1872; Willie Otto, born October 12, 1874; Richard, born May 12, 1877; Elizabeth (Braunholz), born June 20, 1880; and Rudolph, born July 19, 1882. George Werner appeared in the agricultural censuses of 1870 and 1880, living adjacent to his father-in-law, Gottlieb Marquardt. In 1870, he had 160 acres, and by 1880, he had expanded to over 2,000 acres. The Lands of Texas Volume III lists thirteen land purchases between 1870 and 1880, and he continued to acquire land throughout the 1880s. Caroline died in May 1884
and is buried in the Werner Cemetery on the Prassel (West) Ranch at Kendalia. She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Louise, who died on June 19, 1873, and her youngest son, Rudolph, who died as an infant. One can assume they occupy two of the five unmarked graves found at the cemetery. When George died in 1892, his obituary initially reported his death as due to unknown causes, appearing July 18, 1892, in the San Antonio German-language newspaper Freie Presse für Texas. The article states, “He briefly told his son-in-law that he would commit suicide, but since he had made this statement repeatedly, no meaning was attached to it.” A week later, the same newspaper published the following: “Farmer George Werner, who recently committed suicide in Kendall County, had hidden $1200 in gold, silver, and notes in a cave on the banks of the Cibolo where the water could not reach it. However, with the recent flooding, water got in continued on page 16

Note: The newspaper stories raise some questions. The Cibolo does not flow through Sisterdale, so why would George hide his money there? Would a man who has built his land holdings from an initial 160 acres to over 2,000 acres commit suicide over losing $900 in a flood? BBM
and when Werner later looked around for his stash, he found only $300 in silver; the gold and notes were gone. This loss is said to be the cause of suicide.” He is buried beside his wife, Caroline, in the Werner Cemetery.

We provide water for our pets daily, but did you know hydration is part of mealtime too? Many dogs and cats eat primarily kibble, which contains only about 10% moisture. The Boerne Kendall County Economic Development Corporation (BKCEDC) recently recognized students and local employers who participated in the 2026 Home to Texas internship program, an initiative that helps connect talented students with local employers while strengthening Kendall County's future workforce. BKCEDC hosted its annual Home to Texas Intern Reception on July 30 at Sunny's All Day Brunch & Bar, bringing together interns, host employers, community leaders, and community partners to celebrate the program's impact on students, local businesses,

There’s something special about an object made by hand. You notice the slight variations, the texture, the way no two pieces are exactly alike. And when that piece is made from materials and inspiration pulled straight from the Texas Hill Country, it carries a little bit of this place with it. Tucked along scenic FM 473 near Comfort, Hill Country Pottery is part working studio, part gallery, and entirely a reflection of the landscape that surrounds it. Here, artist Brian Burckhardt takes simple clay and transforms it into colorful, functional works of art meant not just to be admired, but to become part of everyday life— from the coffee mug you reach for each morning to the serving bowl placed at the center of a table filled with family and friends. Even the process has Hill Country roots. Locally mixed clay, collected rainwater and cedar ash used in the glazes help give the pottery a true sense of place, while the studio itself—an old West Texas barn that was dismantled, moved and rebuilt—feels like a fitting home for a craft built on tradition, creativity and working with your hands. For nearly three decades, Burckhardt has been shaping clay into pieces designed to be used, shared and enjoyed. But before Hill Country Pottery became a destination along a quiet hill country road, it began with a high school ceramics class and an unexpected love for working with clay.

Finding His Craft
Burckhardt discovered ceramics in high school when he took a Ceramics 101 class. “It was something that came very naturally to me, and I fell in love with the whole process,” said Brian. Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Burckhardt came to Texas to attend Southwestern University, where he studied kinesiology, played baseball and continued pursuing ceramics. But before long, clay began taking up more and more of his attention. “By the end of my college experience, dreams of advancing in baseball faded, and my love of pottery and ceramics overshadowed my kinesiology studies,” said Burckhardt. He spent countless hours in the ceramics studio, throwing hundreds of plates, cups, bowls and mugs—repetition that helped him master his craft. Along the way, he also learned to build and fire kilns and even make his own clay from raw materials. It was also during his time at Southwestern that Burckhardt discovered the Texas Hill Country and began envisioning what his future might look like. “I had always envisioned a studio in the middle of nowhere,” said Burckhardt. “I found that here in the Hill Country and have been able to make my vision come to life.” That vision became Hill Country Pottery, which opened in 2009.
Now, 17 years later, it is still going strong. Brian, along with his wife Shauna, daughter Azalee and son Brock, live, work and play on the property that includes their home, studio and gallery.
Made to Be Used
Today, the studio Brian once imagined is very much a reality. Step inside, and you’ll find him creating handcrafted pottery designed for the dinner table, kitchen and home. In the gallery, visitors will find everything from full dinner place settings, mugs, platters and bowls to decorative vases and other one-of-a-kind pieces. Custom pieces are available as well, and one of Brian’s favorite things to make is something most of us use every single day: the coffee mug. Mugs can be personalized with a family brand, business logo or other special design, making them both functional and personal. Recent local businesses Brian has partnered with include Texas Highlands Custom Homes & Remodel, 24/7 Health & Fitness and Texas Gourmet Pantry. “I just love making mugs,” said Burckhardt. “There is just something about creating that perfect coffee
mug—the way it fits in your hand just right. I have developed my signature style over time. We have really good mugs!”
Try Your Hand at Pottery
But you don’t have to be a seasoned potter—or even know the first thing about clay—to get your hands a little dirty at Hill Country Pottery. The studio also offers beginner pottery classes for those who want to experience the process for themselves. “These are beginner-level classes, typically on a Saturday morning, and last for about two hours,” said Brian. “Students get to work on the potter’s wheel, and continued on page 26

we start with bowls and work our way up.” Each student typically creates two to four pieces during the class. The pieces are then glazed and fired at a later date before students return to pick up their finished creations. For larger groups, Hill Country Pottery also offers mobile classes, perfect for women’s retreats, birthday parties, girls’ nights, church groups and other gatherings. Rather than using a pottery wheel, participants learn hand-building techniques to create their pieces.

That sense of connection extends well beyond the studio. Giving back to the communities that have supported Hill Country Pottery has long been important to the Burckhardt family. Through donated pieces, silent auctions, pottery demonstrations and educational opportunities, they support charities and organizations throughout Comfort, Sisterdale, Boerne, Waring and Bergheim. One particularly meaningful way they give back began in 2019, when Hill Country Pottery partnered with the Comfort Table and Food Pantry to start Comfort Empty Bowls, an annual event benefiting the organization. The concept is simple but meaningful: attendees make a donation, share a humble meal of soup and bread and take home a handcrafted ceramic bowl as a reminder of those in the community whose bowls may otherwise be empty. Hill Country Pottery, along with other local artists, donates the handmade bowls for the event—bringing together art, food and community for a worthy cause. From a lump of clay spinning on the wheel to a favorite mug used every morning, there’s a story behind everything created at Hill Country Pottery. For Brian and the Burckhardt family, that story has become about much more than making beautiful pottery—it’s about building a life around a craft they love, sharing it with others and giving back to the community they call home. As a new school year begins, calendars quickly fill with classes, practices, meetings, carpools, and countless other commitments. In the middle of all that activity, taking care of your health can feel like one more complicated item on the schedule. With endless recommendations about supplements, exercise, sleep, hydration, and diet, it is easy to wonder where to begin—and whether staying healthy really has to be so complicated. The good news is that supporting your health does not have to mean overhauling your entire routine. If you want to simplify your choices, start with a few manageable steps. Before making significant changes, ask your doctor if there is anything you should not do. Then consider gradually working up to drinking half your weight in ounces of water each day and cutting back on fried and sugary foods to make more room for wholesome, nutrient-dense choices. Finally, consider adding just five foundational supplements to your daily routine. I call these five supplements the Foundational Five. These are supplements that almost every person would do well to consider. 1. PROBIOTICS In recent years, much research has continued to confirm the strong link between a healthy gut and a healthy patient. The gut plays an important role in both protection from foreign adversaries (like viruses, bacteria, and toxins) and absorption of needed nutrients. The key to finding a good probiotic is finding a high-quality probiotic that provides a large number of ‘good’ bacteria. Not all probiotics are the

same and typically, taking ‘any ol’ probiotic that is inexpensive, may be more of a waste of time and money than finding a high-quality product. 2. VITAMIN D For many years Vitamin D was seen only as something made in your skin when exposed to sunlight and necessary in small amounts. Current literature, however, suggests the story is much more important and profound than this showing Vitamin D can support the immune system, appropriate placement of calcium in bones, and even some anti-cancer support. It is important to not take too much Vitamin D. This should be tracked at least annually by blood lab values. 3. MULTIVITAMIN (MVI) What is a building without a firm foundation? How can a worker produce the intended product without having the necessary building blocks for construction? This is the role of a quality MVI. There are many mass-produced multivitamins on the market, so which one is the best? First, look for a product that is bioavailable meaning that your body has the ability to utilize it. An MVI tablet does little good if it is so compressed into tablet form that your body can’t dissolve it in your gut. Second, look for a product that has the specific components that you need. Do you need methylated b-vitamins, iron, or something else? 4. MAGNESIUM Do you have muscle cramping, sleep problems, constipation, or nerve or immune stress? Magnesium may help! It is used in over 300 enzymatic functions in your body and deficiency in magnesium can impede normal cell function. It is also critical to be aware that there are many different forms of magnesium and they do not all do the same thing. It is important to have the proper form to support the symptoms you are experiencing. 5. OMEGA-3 Omega-3s are polyunsaturated fatty acids that your body uses to support cell structure and cannot make on its own. This means that you must take them in by diet or supplement and getting the proper ratio of the omega fatty acids is important. Studies have shown that the proper amount of polyunsaturated fatty acids can support healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels, blood pressure, cognitive function, and even support lower levels of inflammation in the body. The Boerne Independent School District (BISD) is pleased to announce that Trustee Dallas Pipes has been invited to be part of the 2027 Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) Leadership Class. The Leadership TASB class is the premier trustee training program in the state of Texas, and was established in 1993 to provide trustees with advanced training to cultivate visionary leadership,
enhance governance knowledge, and build meaningful relationships statewide. Mr. Pipes and the other selected members of the cohort will begin their training in October at the txEDCON26 in Houston, TX. Mr. Pipes, a retired veteran and local realtor, was elected to the Board in 2024. When he was a student in elementary school, Pipes’ mother realized he was dyslexic and advocated for her son and others like him to receive appropriate learning services – even running for and serving on the school board in their hometown. Pipes and his wife have 5 young children, 3 of whom are students in the district. Dr. Kristin Craft, Boerne ISD Superintendent, lauded Mr. Pipes’ commitment to not only the district, but to being a lifelong learner. “Dallas’ commitment to developing a deeper understanding of school business has been so meaningful over the past few years. He’s served our country, and now he’s serving our community. As a member of our security committee, safety committee, and our technology committee over the past three years, his contributions have always been a value-add. TASB’s training programs are game-changing for us, and we’re so glad he will bring all that knowledge back to our district.”
