The GVTC Foundation’s 13th Annual Thanksgiving Give Back Project Delivers 614 Meals The GVTC Foundation celebrated its 13th Annual Thanksgiving Give Back Project, delivering 614 Thanksgiving meals to families experiencing hardship across the GVTC service area. What began over a decade ago as a small act of kindness has grown into one of the Foundation’s most beloved and impactful community traditions. Spreading Comfort, One Meal at a Time The heart of the Thanksgiving Give Back Project is simple: to bring joy to families who may be struggling. Since its start in 2012, the project has continued to grow, powered by the generosity of local businesses, schools, organizations, and compassionate volunteers who come together each year to make sure no family goes without a Thanksgiving meal. Working hand in hand with local food pantries, The GVTC Foundation ensures every meal reaches those who need it most. Thanks to community partners, families received frozen turkeys, traditional sides, bread, and desserts to enjoy at their own tables. On the Saturday before Thanksgiving, GVTC employees and their families rolled up their sleeves to pack and personally deliver each meal with care, smiles, and a spirit of gratitude. Since its beginning, the project has supported a total of 4,381 families, each one a reminder of what can be

First Families of Kendall County Hedwig Karl Ludwig Adolph Zoeller 1839 – 1909

ponsored by the Genealogical Society of Kendall County (GSKC), The First Families of Kendall County project began in 1999. The purpose of this project is to recognize the living descendants of persons instrumental in founding and settling of the area encompassed by present day Kendall County, Texas and to preserve the history of their families and the county. To date, 630 applications have been approved for 352 different individuals. One hundred seventy-two (172) Founders and Early Settlers have been documented and recognized. They represent one hundred forty (140) different families in Kendall County. There are two hundred seventy-nine (279) volumes of First Family notebooks on the shelves at the Family History Place. Here we will share with you some of the stories of those First Families who settled this beautiful area of the Texas hill country. We hope you enjoy!

Augusta Elizabeth Wendler 1842 – 1906

Family stories do not tell what Adolph did in the years immediately following the war, but he probably worked for Augusta's brother, Henry Wendler, a Boerne merchant. In November 1866, the Zoellers added a baby girl to their family. Augusta named her Bertha after her older sister. A second daughter, Louise, was born in February 1868. Adolph appeared on the Kendall County Tax Rolls in 1867, 68, and 69, where he paid taxes on livestock and miscellaneous property, but not on land. On December 16, 1869, Adolph purchased Boerne Town Lot 53, consisting of 40 acres located about a mile-and-a-half northwest of town. Eleven days later, Augusta gave birth to their second son, Max. Adolph was a good citizen. He paid his poll tax and voted; he served as a juror and worked on road crews. He became a naturalized citizen of the United States on July 29, 1867 and the following day, Adolph became the first man in Kendall County to comply with a state-wide mandate that all voting aged men in Texas be registered. The information collected included the registrants’ place

of residence, and years of residency, and native country. Naturalized citizens were required to report how, when and where they became citizens. This was followed by a column for the registrants’ signature and concluded with a General Remarks column. The remarks contained the registrants’ race and their comments about their role during the Civil War. For Adolph, they wrote "White. Driven from State by Rebs, Jd (joined) USA Feb 63, com (commissioned) off (officer) to close of war." One of the more interesting events of Adolph's tenure as Clerk occurred during a special session of "Police Court" held January 31, 1870, when the county had to appeal to the Commanding General overseeing the area during reconstruction. Adolph drew up a petition to the General asking him "to allow the county the taxes levied in the first [illegible word] of the year." The fact that a county had to petition for its own tax revenue illustrates the challenges local governments faced during the Reconstruction period following the Civil War. The Federal Government ordered Texas to hold a special election in January 1870 under its supervision and elect representatives to fill vacant legislative positions. The voters elected Adolph to the Texas House as a Republican from District 29, representing Kendall and thirteen other counties. Governor Edmund J. Davis, Adolph's former commanding officer in the First Texas Cavalry, called a provisional session that ran from February 8 through February 28. Adolph had a week to get to Austin after the January 31 Police Court session. He attended three other legislative sessions during his two-year term. Neither Adolph nor Governor Davis won re-election. Instead, Texans elected Democratic candidate Richard Coke in 1873, and there was not another Republican Governor in Texas until 1979. While Adolph listed his occupation as "representative in legislature" in the 1870 census, he was still engaged in farming. He paid taxes on forty acres, two horses, twenty head of cattle, sixty sheep, and $570 worth of miscellaneous property. Augusta's father died in 1869, so in addition to Augusta and her four children, her mother, Catherine Wendler, and Henry Bickel, a farmhand, lived on the farm. Governor Davis appointed Adolph as a Brigadier General in the Texas Militia in August of that year. In November, Kendall County Police Court appointed him as a school trustee for Precinct VI. Adolph did not appear in the Police Court minutes in 1871, but in May, the court's name was changed from "Police Court" to "County Court." His next appearance in court minutes occurred on May 27, 1872, when he posted bond as a Notary Public. On July 29, 1873, he was appointed Presiding Election Officer for Precinct 1, which voted at the courthouse. There, he oversaw the election where his former

commanding officer, Governor Davis, was defeated by Richard Coke. In addition to his involvement with the county, Adolph was also a member and officer in the Boerne Gesangverein. He appears as an officer on the deed for Town Lots 119 and 120 when the Gesangverein bought them in September 1871. In June 1873, the organization resolved to deed the property to the existing School Society, provided they build a two-room school within one year. In August 1874, Adolph Zoellerr signed the property over to the School Society as Treasurer of the Gesangverein. The two-room school is still standing, hidden between the old City Hall and the KuhlmannKing house on E. Blanco. Despite his busy public life, Adolph was still a husband, father, and farmer. He and Augusta had three more children between 1870 and 1876. Elizabeth was born in March 1872, Louis in June 1874, and Charles in August 1876. On April 10, 1875, Adolph presented his bond as Justice of the Peace for Precinct 1. Afterwards, he took the oath of office and took his seat as presiding justice in County Court. County Judge Wilhelm Dietert presided over County Court for the last time on May 7, 1870. Between May 28, 1870, and August 14, 1876, the Justice of the Peace from Precinct 1 presided; therefore, Adolph presided over the County Court meetings from April 10, 1875, until April 14, 1876, when County Judge P. D. Saner took his oath of office. The new State Constitution came into effect then, creating the role of County Commissioner and establishing the Commissioners Court in place of the County Court. It also changed how public roads were maintained and funded and it continued on page 16

separated the roles of Justice of the Peace and County Commissioner. Initially, the Commissioners Court appointed the County Commissioners as road overseers in their precincts. Adolph resigned as Justice of the Peace in February of 1877 and moved the family to a farm on Sisterdale Road near the present-day Waring, which they named Geisenheim. Family stories say the name came from the goats they raised there. In addition to goats, the family also raised dairy cattle and marketed dairy products. Adolph's grandchildren told stories of riding with their grandfather in his two-wheeled, horse-drawn hack to deliver the dairy products. In August 1878, Katie Zoeller became the first child born at Geisenheim. Despite living thirteen miles outside of town, Adolph remained socially active in Boerne. In 1878, he organized the Boerne Turnverein German Social Club and served as its first president. The county still called on him to serve in various civil capacities. He routinely served the county as the Presiding Election Officer for his precinct, Precinct 6, and worked on road planning and maintenance. In May 1879, the Commissioners asked Adolph and four other men to lay out a new road from Comfort to Sisterdale by way of Geisenheim Farm. The 1880 census only listed seven of Adolph's and Augusta's children. Their third-born, Louise, died between 1870 and 1880, but there is no record of her death. How and where she died, and the location of her grave, are all unknown. Ottilie Zoeller was the last child born to Adolph and Augusta, arriving at the farm on April 7, 1882. Adolph and Augusta lived out the remainder of their lives at Geisenheim. As he grew older, Adolph suffered from rheumatism and asthma connected to his service in the Civil War. In 1884, he applied for a Civil War disability pension, which was approved. He would burn jimson weed and inhale the smoke to relieve his asthma. Augusta died in February 1906 when she suffered a fatal heart attack while trying to render aid to the driver of a wagon that had overturned. She and Adolph were returning home from a granddaughter's birthday celebration when they came upon the wreck. Augusta ran to help, while Adolph, suffering from rheumatism, remained in the wagon to control his team, which was very skittish. She came back to retrieve Adolph's knife so she could free

the horse, which had fallen and become tangled in its harness. Just as she reached the downed animal, she grasped her chest, and while appearing to be in great pain, she fell to the ground. The driver of the wrecked wagon assisted Adolph in getting Augusta back into their carriage. They rushed home, where Augusta died before help could arrive. She was buried in the Zoeller Cemetery. Adolph died three years later, in September 1909, and was buried next to Augusta. BBM

Boerne ISD Opens Aquatic Learning Center

Boerne ISD is proud to announce that the long-awaited Aquatics Learning Center project has now reached its “substantial completion” certification. Superintendent Kristin Craft, Ed.D., shared that the project is a dream come true for our students and the community. “We are so excited to have our very own aquatic learning center. This will serve as a dynamic learning environment for our students, and will allow our dedicated athletes the ability to practice and compete on their home turf,” Craft shared. Champion High School’s boys and girls water polo teams qualified for state this year. When told that the ALC would be open for practices as early as mid-December, students were delighted. Athletic Director Stan Leech stated, “The Aquatics Learning Center creates an important space for our student-athletes and our entire community. We’re grateful to our community for approving this project back in 2022, and we can’t wait to get our students accustomed to this beautiful, state-ofthe-art facility.” Coaches from both High Schools are thrilled by the facility, too. Boerne HS Swim Coach Brandon Cheves shared, “I am incredibly excited to have the opportunity to use the brand new Boerne ISD Aquatic Center. This beautiful, stateof-the-art facility provides our students with an outstanding environment to train, grow, and compete. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to coach and inspire the next generation of BISD athletes in a space that reflects the pride, excellence, and commitment of our district. This facility represents an important step forward in supporting student growth in aquatic sports and in expanding future program opportunities for BISD students.” Champion’s Assistant Head Water Polo Coach Mike Gillette shared, “The addition of the BISD Aquatics Center is a reflection of the sustained excellence of our Aquatics programs. Every year our kids have earned scholarships to multiple collegiate programs including top Division I programs. Our kids are excited to be able to train in a state-of-the-art facility.” The Aquatics Learning Center is dark sky compliant and was strategically

built in a grove of existing trees. The pool is a Myrtha Competition pool, which is the highest internal aquatic standard. Myrtha pools are designed to reduce currents and turbulence, enhance speed, and increase speed and performance. The pool has integrated heating systems to maintain optimal swimming conditions, an advanced filtration system to ensure turnover rates and water quality, and automated chemical management to ensure water quality. A built-in monitoring system provides real time data on pool conditions. The pool measures 25 yards by 25 meters, and has depths from 4 feet to 16 feet. It is ADA compliant and equipped for competition swimming, diving, and water polo. The design also includes a teaching area. The ALC has two outdoor rinse stations, boys and girls locker rooms and visitor restrooms, and office space. In accordance with UIL safety regulations, there will be a lifeguard on duty when the pool is in use by students. Not only will the facility be the new practice and competition home for Boerne High School and Champion High School’s swimming and water polo teams, but other athletic teams will be able to reserve the pool at available times for workouts and cross-training. In addition, beginning in the 2026–27 school year, high school students will have the option to enroll in a new Outdoor Life Physical Education course focused on lifelong fitness and outdoor recreation. The fall semester will center on aquatics, with students learning water safety, refining swimming techniques, and participating in activities like water polo. In the spring, the class will transition to landbased skills, offering hands-on experiences in hiking, orienteering, and basic camping that build leadership and problem-solving abilities. Board President Kristi Schmidt commented, “Community support of Bond 2022 has led to so many amazing upgrades, remodels of existing structures, and additions like this one. We wholeheartedly thank the community for helping us reach this goal. The new facility and courses help strengthen the district’s offerings and set students up for success. The Aquatics Learning Center’s opening shows that when we work together, great things happen.”

Craft completes prestigious Holdsworth Leadership Program

Boerne ISD Superintendent Kristin Craft, Ed.D., has completed the Holdsworth Center’s highly competitive 18-month Superintendent Leadership Program. The Holdsworth Center, founded by H-E-B Chairman Charles Butt, is dedicated to strengthening public education across the state of Texas. The Superintendent Leadership Program invites a small cohort of new superintendents to receive intensive training from veteran superintendents and experts in public education. Dr. Craft was one of only 10 superintendents selected to participate. She has spent the past 18 months collaborating, learning, and engaging with experts and mentors who can help her lead our district and influence long-term success. Board President Kristi Schmidt shared, “The Holdsworth Center is widely known as a leader in public education, and we’re so proud of Dr. Craft for being selected for this opportunity. It’s been amazing to join her on this journey and learn more about her as a visionary leader. We’ve witnessed her leadership during the recent election, and on a daily basis as she takes our district to new heights. Dr. Craft is already doing an exceptional job leading us, and we’re excited for the future.” Members of the Board of Trustees were invited to join her for personalized, in-depth training at Holdsworth. The School Board Institute prepares Boards to work together more fluidly and to put stakeholder needs at the forefront of their efforts. Members of the board have been invited to participate in the next installment of this institute in the spring. Their continued involvement with the Holdsworth Center helps to position Boerne ISD as a leading district in the state. Dr. Craft’s leadership team was also invited to a retreat in June 2025 at the Holdsworth Center. The team was challenged to re-envision their approach to their work, and came away with renewed focus and opportunities for stronger collaboration. Dr. Craft shared, “I am so grateful to the Holdsworth Center for this once-in-alifetime opportunity. It was incredible to learn alongside other superintendents who put students and staff at the center of every decision they make. Holdsworth provides

a unique perspective on the work we do, and I am honored to have been part of this program.” Under Dr. Craft’s leadership, the district passed its first-ever voter-approved tax ratification election, achieved its 5th and 6th straight A-ratings from TEA, started the P-TECH Health Sciences pathway, and reached 99% graduation and 95% CCMR rate. Boerne ISD is proud to call Dr. Craft our superintendent, and looks forward to seeing where her visionary, people-centered leadership takes us in the future. BBM
