Golf Course Update

Many of you have been asking what was accomplished during the closure of the golf course in July. In discussion with Keith Welter, our Golf Course Superintendent, the following projects were completed.

DRYJECT THE GREENS

The DryJect process is a method of turf maintenance that combines aeration, topdressing and soil amendment application into a single, efficient operation. It uses a high-pressure water-based injection system to create aeration holes in the root zone, while simultaneously filling those holes with desired sand, peat or custom blends. This process helps relieve compaction, improve water filtration, and enhance root growth, all while minimizing disruption to the playing surface. We injected 30 tons of sand into the greens and achieved minimal disturbance to the putting surface.

AERIFIED ALL THE TEE BOXES AND FAIRWAYS

Aerification (often shortened to aeration) is a crucial golf course maintenance practice involving punching small holes into the tee boxes and fairways. The primary goal is to improve soil health and turf quality by relieving compaction (caused by foot traffic and machinery) increasing air, water and nutrient flow to the grassroots, promoting stronger, healthier turf and reducing thatch buildup (a layer of organic matter that can stifle grass growth).

VERTICUT ALL AREAS

Verticutting , also known as vertical mowing, involves cutting thin grooves into the area. This process helps to improve water and nutrient absorption by the turf, encourages growth, and reduces the risk of disease and pest infestations. In addition, it leads to enhanced turf health, improved playability, reduced disease pressure and reduced compaction.

CIRCLE MOWING FAIRWAYS AND TEES

Circle mowing is a fairway and tee mowing technique where the mower moves in wide, overlapping circles, rather than straight lines. This method is particularly useful for managing grain and improving surface uniformity on warm season grasses.

ADDED CART PATHS

They added some cart paths for the grounds crew to get around the course a little better. Then they took the sod from those areas and planted it throughout the course on some of the spots that did not come in during the grow in.

Golf Course Update

REPAIR SOME OF THE CART PATHS

The major section was done up by the 11th green. There will be continued repair to the cart paths throughout the summer.

HERBICIDE PROGRAM

We are currently working on the herbicide program targeting the tropical signal grass which is a problematic perennial weed. This weed is known for its ability to from dense mats and is difficult to control. This is a tough process because the best herbicides to use for this cannot be sprayed on Paspalum (this is the kind of turfgrass we have at Boca). This just makes the process trickier but not impossible. This program will continue over the next few months.

The course will be closed one more day in the middle of September for one last preemergent spray (preventing weeds before they sprout) as well as our last insecticide spray for the year. In addition, a full course fertilizer application will happen on that day.

As you can see, a considerable amount of work was accomplished during the course closure. As Keith says, “ we have a long way to go, but it is by far the best this place has ever been”. Thanks to Keith and his team for all their accomplishments in a short period of time and for a beautiful course!

TENNIS UPDATE FROM THE TENNIS PRO

FUN FACTS ABOUT THE US OPEN

The US Open, held annually in New York, is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments (currently being played). It’s known for its exciting atmosphere, night matches, and the largest tennis stadium in the world, Arthur Ashe Stadium. The tournament is renowned for being the first major to offer equal prize money to men and women. The US Open was also the first major to introduce immediate replay checks of line calls (Hawk-Eye) in 2006 and the first to completely integrate HawkEye Live in 2021.

CPR, AEDS & YOU

The month of September highlights the importance of heart health, including awareness about atrial fibrillation and high cholesterol. This makes it a good time to educate and encourage individuals to learn CPR and AED techniques, empowering them to respond effectively during a cardiac emergency.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique that can help save a life during cardiac arrest (CA) when the heart stops beating or beats too ineffectively to circulate blood to the brain and other organs. CPR can be learned by any individual at any age and plays a critical role at a time when every second counts.

From the National Institute of Health:

Approximately 46% of individuals experiencing cardiac arrest receive CPR from a bystander

When effective CPR is administered immediately after CA, it can double or triple a person's chance of survival

An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device used to treat CA by delivering an electrical shock to the heart, helping restore a normal rhythm.Using an AED requires little to no training as the device itself "speaks" to the user, providing verbal instructions to guide them through the process.

From the American Heart Association:

When an AED is used, survival rates can increase by 24% compared to CPR alone with 9%

Only a small percentage of individuals apply an AED before emergency services arrive

Statistics show that the combination of bystander CPR and the application of an AED can significantly increase the victim's chances of survival. Taking a few hours to learn these two life-saving techniques could help you save a neighbor or loved one.

For more information on getting CPR/AED certified, contact the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. Classes are also taught often here at Boca so check your weekly club updates. Stop by the Fitness Center and I'll show you the AED and how to operate it in the event of an emergency. Contact me at (941) 896-2211 or Jrichardson2167@gmail.com

Ava

Davis

Meet Ava Davis, who joined Boca Royale in August 2025 as a front desk and hostess team member. Born in Missouri, Ava traveled often with her family as her dad serves as a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Her favorite place she’s lived is Guam, where she spent 4.5 years enjoying the food and culture.

Ava has a younger sister and a cat named Tinkerbell the 3rd. She’s currently in nursing school with plans to work in the ER one day. Outside of school and work, Ava enjoys reading, going to the beach, and loves the flexibility of working at Boca Royale.

Be sure to say hello to Ava — we’re thrilled to have her as part of the Boca Royale family!
