May 1, 2026

May is here, and as we say goodbye (for now!) to our snowbirds, we begin to settle into a more relaxed and enjoyable summer rhythm at Boca Royale. While the season may be winding down, the Club remains active with a great mix of social events, dining experiences, and opportunities to connect with fellow members.

We kick off the month with a festive favorite, Cinco de Mayo on May 5, followed by our Boards & Bubbles Charcuterie Class on May 7, a fun, interactive evening that combines creativity, great flavors, and a little sparkle.

One of the highlights of the month will be Blues, Brews & BBQ: Evening on the Green on May 9. This outdoor event brings together live music, smoky BBQ, and a laid-back atmosphere on the Event Lawn. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs or golf carts and enjoy a relaxed evening under the stars.

We’ll celebrate all the amazing moms in our community with Mother’s Day Brunch on May 10, a special tradition and one of our most wellattended events of the year.

As we move further into the month, the Club continues to offer a variety of ways to stay engaged. Join us for Trivia Night with Greg on May 19, always a lively and competitive evening, and take advantage of our ongoing dining offerings, themed nights, and live music throughout the month.

We close out May with a full weekend of Memorial Day festivities. Enjoy Memorial Day Brunch on May 24, followed by a day of fun on May 25 featuring our Memorial Day Golf Tournament, Racquets Social, and BBQ Buffet.

As we transition into summer, we look forward to a season filled with more casual gatherings, familiar faces, and new opportunities to enjoy the Club. Whether you're here all summer or visiting throughout the year, there’s always something happening at Boca Royale.

Conversation with Our Golf Course Superintendent, Ben Kamberg

Maintaining a beautiful, playable golf course is both an art and a science We sat down with our Golf Course Superintendent to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes, the challenges of course management, and how members can help keep our course in top condition.

Q: What inspired you to become a golf course superintendent?

A: Like many in this field, my interest started with a love of the game and being outdoors. I grew up on our family ranch in Arcadia, Florida where our focus was on cattle, citrus and sod. While at the University of Florida, I got a job as a cart guy at the local country club, Haile Plantation, while still in school of course. It was here where I became fascinated by the science behind turf management and the challenge of maintaining a course that’s both enjoyable and sustainable. My mentor, Joe Holden, the original and only superintendent who built Haile Plantation in 1993 with golfer-turned architect, Gary Player, taught me the fundamentals and core concepts of golf course agronomy Joe traveled around the world with Gary Player building and growing in golf courses, as well as working at Augusta National from 1987 to 1992 and has been invited back every year to the Home of the Masters to volunteer on the Agronomy Team. Joe’s expertise and passion for the industry and my background growing up on a farm and enjoying the game of golf is what inspired me to be where I am today.

Q: Tell us about your educational path to your career?

A: I majored in Political Science and minored in Turf Grass Management at University of Florida, where I received my BA. As part of being a Superintendent, I am required to do a minimum of 16 continuing education credits per year. I also have my Florida State Pesticide License.

Q: Can you tell us about your background and how you came to this club?

A: For the past 3 years, I was the Assistant Superintendent at Gasparilla Inn and Club on Boca Grande I also had the unique opportunity of being on the Agronomy Team at TPC Sawgrass during The Players Championship in 2023. I was privileged to be selected as Top 50 Assistant Superintendents 19th Annual Green Start Academy in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Each stop helped me develop a deeper understanding of turf care and course management, and I’m excited to bring that experience here.

Q: What makes our course unique?

A: Every course has its own personality. Ours stands out because of its layout, natural features, and the expectations of our membership. Balancing aesthetics with playability is always a rewarding challenge.

Q: What does a typical day look like for you?

A: No two days are exactly the same, which is part of what I enjoy. Early mornings are spent reviewing course conditions and setting priorities with the team From there, it’s a mix of planning, problem-solving, and being out on the course to ensure everything meets our standards. During my first few weeks, my main focus has been on our irrigation system.

behind the greens: A Conversation with Our Golf Course Superintendent, Ben Kamberg

Q: What are some of your priorities for the course?

A. 1) Greens are always priority one. The greens are the bread and butter of any golf course, and are the most crucial, high-maintenance, and closely monitored element of the course. While keeping them healthy, I would like to see a slow but incremental increase in green speeds while maintaining their trueness.

2) Moving into the new maintenance building, pending county permitting. My hope is to have that completed within 3 months

3) I want to eliminate the hard lip between the sod line in the approaches and the sprig line in the fairways. Because Paspalum is a stickier grass and can be hard to chip into, many people choose to putt through the collars of the greens. With the current unevenness in that approach line, I have made it a high priority to soften and smooth those areas.

4) Long term, I envision improvements to the cart paths.

Q: What are your biggest challenges?

1) Without a doubt, maintaining the Irrigation System has been our biggest challenge.

2) Until very recently, I would say hiring a new assistant superintendent. However, we recently hired . Mayson Roberts to fill the role.

3) Hiring new and retaining current staff.

Q: What goes into keeping the greens in top condition?

A: It’s a combination of careful mowing, irrigation, fertilization, and monitoring plant health. Greens require constant attention, and even small adjustments can make a big difference in how they play.

Q: What’s one thing golfers do that unintentionally harms the course?

A: Not repairing ball marks on the greens is a big one It may seem minor, but over time it can significantly impact turf health and playability. My mantra is “Fix Your Ball Marks”.

Q: Do you golf yourself?

A: I do when I can. It gives me valuable perspective on how the course is playing and helps me make better decisions for our members. In fact, I played at Boca Royale immediately following the renovation in late 2025 before I worked here

Q: Tell us about life outside of work?

A: I am married to Becca and we live in North Port. Both my family and my wife’s family live nearby. My wife is a 2 year medical student who is very busy studying. nd

Q: Is there anything you’d like members to appreciate more about the course or your team?

A: Just that a lot of care and effort goes into every detail. We take great pride in providing the best possible experience and appreciate the support of our members.

From early mornings to long-term planning, the work of a superintendent is essential to the experience we all enjoy. Next time you ’ re out on the course, take a moment to appreciate the care that goes into every green, fairway, and bunker

fitness center update

Did You Know?

The humerus bone (upper arm) is named from the Latin for "shoulder" or "upper arm". Not too funny.

The average male should be able to do 15-20 pushups while females should be able to do 10-15. This varies by age, of course.

Gymnasium is Greek for "to exercise naked". That's why at Boca we call it a fitness center!

The highest verified barbell squat was by Gregg Ernst in 1993. He lifted a whopping 5340 pounds!

While the gluteus maximus is the strongest muscle in the human body overall, the jaw muscle (masseter) is the strongest based on weight. Some of you motormouths get quite the masseter workout at the fitness center.

Nearly 80% of Americans have a health club membership they don't use.

Giraffes have the same number of cervical vertebrae as humans; theirs are just much larger and longer.

A pound of muscle burns three times more calories than a pound of fat, meaning higher muscle mass increases metabolism. So what weighs more: a pound of muscle or a pound of fat? Think about it.

Enjoy the summer and we look forward to seeing everyone back working out. Remember, it's better to be the oldest in the gym than the youngest in assisted living!

To start an exercise plan, contact John Richardson, personal trainer at 941-896-2211 or JRichardson2167@gmail.com

MEET THE BOCA BAND

Many great ventures start in a garage (think Apple, Hewlitt Packard). The same can be said for the Boca Band

More than two years ago, John Coyne (drums, vocals) invited Mike Bogumill (bass, vocals), Bruce Merkle (guitar) and Hayes Merkert (guitar, vocals) to come over to his garage and jam. Several months of fun were had but most of the playing was instrumental Mitch Neuhauser (lead vocal)

joined in the Spring of 2024 and, shortly thereafter, Dan Vick (sax, vocals, percussion and organ) came on board Just recently, Mark Leptinsky (lead guitar), joined the band and they are just starting to hit their stride.

All seven members reside here in Boca Royale. They are excited to share their take on classic rock songs with the Boca Community writ large. Hope to see you on the 15 . th
