Initially built as a 65-foot lighthouse with wooden stairs, Cape Florida Light- house guided sailors and served as a lookout to protect the area from the pirates and other invaders that had been posing dangers to Florida throughout the 1700s and early 1800s. The image on the left is an illustration based on the style of Dutch Master Painter Johannes Vermeer. He was known for the use of light, particulaly natural light from an open window.

Vermeer was known for his use of light and soft muted colors. He was ranked with Rembrandt as one of the most admired Dutch
artists. Born in 1632, he pro- duced only 36 known paintings. The most famous likely was Girl with a Pearl Earring, which was the inspiration for a 2004 movie of the same name starring Colin Firth and Scarlett Johannsen.

AUS Navy F4 Phantom takes off during an airshow at Homestead Air Force Base. This aircraft was flown by the Navy, Air Force and Marines. The F-4 was used extensively during the Vietnam War, first as the principal air superiority fighter and later as a ground-attack and aerial reconnaissance aircraft.
As a bonus for our artists, we have included a second prop plane sitting on the tarmac and covered with a black tarp over the cockpit. Use your imagi- nation; color the sky blue and alternate black stripes on the wings.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose vivid colors, emotional intensity, and expressive brushwork transformed the art world. Born in the Netherlands, he created more than 2,000 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, during a career that lasted only about ten years. His most famous works in- clude Starry Night, Sunflowers, and The Bedroom. Despite struggling with poverty and mental illness, he remained committed to his art. He sold very few paintings but is regarded as one of the most influen- tial artists in the history of Western art.
Leonardo da Vinci was one of the great- est artists and thinkers of the Italian Renaissance. Born in Vinci, Italy, he ex- celled as a painter, inventor, engineer, ar- chitect, anatomist, and scientist. His masterpieces include the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, celebrated for their realism, composition, and emotional depth. Leon- ardo filled notebooks with sketches and ideas far ahead of his time, including con- cepts for flying machines, military devices, and scientific studies of the human body.
Johannes Vermeer was a celebrated Dutch Master painter known for his luminous interior scenes and extraordinary use of light and color. Born in Delft, Netherlands, Vermeer created intimate paintings depicting everyday domestic life, often featuring women reading, writing, or performing music. Though only about 35 paintings are attributed to him, works such as Girl with a Pearl Earring and View of Delft are regarded as masterpieces of the Dutch Golden Age.
TheGreat Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) is Florida’s larg- est wading bird, standing up to 4 feet tall with a 6.5-foot wingspan, often seen in wetlands and shoreline water.
Year-round residents, they are iconic coastal birds recognized by their blue-gray plumage, slow flight, and patient, lightning-fast hunting in shallow water.
As a lifelong resident of the low-lying Netherlands, these birds surely were a daily scene for Johannes Vermeer.
Situated on 50 acres of pre- vious wastewater utility property, Wakodahatchee is a constructed wetlands that is free to the public. The site features a three-quarter mile boardwalk that crosses between open water pond areas and islands. A part of the South section of the Great Florida Birding Trail,
Wakodahatchee is home to an abundance of wildlife as more than 178 bird species have been identified along with turtles, alligators, rabbits, fish, frogs and raccoons.
Due to the subtropical climate conditions in South Florida, Macaws are often spot- ted in the wild as well as being kept as house pets.
Macaws and their feathers have attracted the attention of peo- ple throughout history. South American weavers have used their feathers to create a number of textiles, most notably feath- ered panels and tabards. It is highly conceivable that Johannes Vermeer could have had Macaws in his home in the
Netherlands. Aviculturists have reported an over-abundance of female blue-and-yellow macaws in captivity, which differs from the general rule with captive ma- caws and other parrots, where the males are more abundant.

At the western end of Atlantic Blvd. in Broward County, there is a little known spot on the edge of the Everglades where one can park their car and enjoy a sunset.
In the Dutch Master Painter Johannes Vermeer edited style image, we used a little Artificial Intelligence to add a period sensitive sailboat. Honestly, it wasn’t there when the photo- graph was made. A large print hangs in the home of the photographer, G. Richard Booth.
The life and art of Johannes Vermeer are closely associated with the city of Delft in the Netherlands. He was born in Delft in 1632 and lived there until his death in 1675. His father, Reynier Vermeer, was a silk weav- er who produced caffa, a fine satin fabric, but in 1631 he also registered in the Saint Luke’s Guild in Delft as a master art dealer.
Many of his paintings are on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC.
Construction of the Monastery of St. Bernard de Clairvaux was begun in the year 1133 AD in Sacramenia in northern Spain.
In 1925, William Randolph Hearst purchased the Cloisters and the Monastery’s outbuildings. Eventually, it was reassembled in North Miami. Today the parish Church of St. Bernard de Clairvaux is an active and grow- ing congregation in the Episco-
pal Diocese of Southeast Florida.
This is a beautiful and inspiring church and reflects the region’s deep commitment to religious history. It is a functional church; not a tourist attraction and well worth a visit.
Due to restrictions on commercial photography, this is not ac- tually the church. However, visi- tors can expect similar views.
Cloisters were a popular fea- ture in Medieval cathedrals throughout much of Europe and the United Kingdom. They were designed and built as places for contemplation and inspiration.
A cloister (from Latin claustrum ‘enclosure’) is a covered walk, open gallery, or open arcade running along the walls of buildings and forming a quadrangle or garth. The attachment of a cloister to a cathedral or church,
commonly against a warm south- ern flank,usually indicates that it is (or once was) part of a mo- nastic foundation.
The intended purpose for such enclosure is to prevent distrac- tion from prayer and the reli- gious life and to keep an atmosphere of silence.

George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River occurred on Christmas night 1776 during the American Revolutionary War. It was a high-stakes surprise attack against Hessian forces in Trenton, NJ. It truly marked the turning point in the war for independence.
