Time in the Word

Following Christ in a Difficult World — 1 Peter 2:13–25
Peter calls believers to live as faithful Christians in the midst of a watching world. In 1 Peter 2:13–17, he instructs us to “submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake.” Our submission to legitimate authority is ultimately an expression of our submission to God. Christians are called to be good citizens, to respect authority, to do what is right, and to live honorably before unbelievers. This does not mean obeying commands that directly contradict God’s Word, but it does mean that our normal attitude should be one of respect rather than rebellion. Our conduct should cause others to see the transforming power of Christ in our lives. Peter then addresses servants and employees who may find themselves under difficult or unfair masters. In verses 18–20, he teaches that there is value before God in patiently enduring unjust treatment when we have done what is right. This is not an endorsement of abuse or injustice, nor does Scripture command us to remain in dangerous circumstances. Rather,
Peter is teaching believers how to respond when suffering comes to us despite doing what is right. Anyone can remain patient when treated fairly, but there is a distinctly Christian witness when we respond to unjust treatment without hatred, vengeance, or bitterness. The foundation of Peter’s teaching is found in verse 21: “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps.” Jesus did not merely teach us how to suffer; He demonstrated it. He was innocent, yet He willingly endured rejection, humiliation, false accusations, and the cross. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are enabled to follow His example—not by our own strength, but by the grace of God working within us. Christian maturity is demonstrated not only by how we worship when everything is going well, but also by how we respond when we are mistreated.
Verses 22–23 point us directly to the character of Christ: “Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.”When Jesus was reviled, He did not retaliate. When He suffered, He did not threaten revenge. Instead, He “committed himself to him that judgeth righteously.” This is a powerful lesson for every believer. We do not have to repay every insult, answer every accusation, or defend ourselves against every injustice. There are times when we must speak truth and stand for righteousness, but we can leave ultimate judgment in the hands of God. The Holy Spirit gives us grace to control our words, restrain our anger, and trust the righteous Judge. Peter then moves from Christ’s example to Christ’s saving work: “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree”(v. 24). Jesus did not merely suffer as an example—He suffered for our sins. At Calvary, Christ bore the penalty that we deserved so that, having died to sin, we might “live unto righteousness.”
This is the heart of the Gospel. Salvation is not simply becoming a better person; it is receiving forgiveness and new life through the crucified and risen Christ. The Holy Spirit then empowers the redeemed believer to live differently, turning from sin and pursuing righteousness because Christ has already paid the price for our redemption. Finally, verse 25 reminds us of who we are apart from Christ and who we have become through Him: “For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.” We were wandering, spiritually lost, and unable to save ourselves. But Jesus, the Good Shepherd, came seeking us. He gave His life for His sheep and now watches over our souls. Therefore, when we face injustice, suffering, rejection, or difficult circumstances, we need not walk alone. Our Shepherd is with us. Let us follow His steps, trust His righteous judgment, walk in holiness, and allow the Holy Spirit to produce in us the character of Christ. Lord Jesus, help us to follow Your example, endure suffering faithfully, live righteously, and trust You as the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls. Amen. In His service, Dr. Bob Vineyard

Every month financial support goes to Pakistan so ministers can preach meetings to the brick slaves, the rural Hindu tribes, and in Evangelical churches. Throughout the month, there are also special requests for things such as medical procedures and medicines, motorcycles, bicycles, heaters, and food. Plans are for a trip when $3,000 can be raised to award certficates of one-year completion of studies.

We are so thankful that the $1,000 needed for a generator has been raised! Thank you for everyone who contribruted so food would not go bad during long black outs. Because of blackouts, pictures of Cuba to share are not reaching BVM.

They continue their work in the elementary school for children that BVM built, as well as support them to work in prison ministries, women’s small business support, i.e., raising chickens, sewing, and the many pastors and churches aligned with BVM, etc. Thank you to everyone who supports BVM, who passes on the seed to the pastors around the world for the Kingdom work.

The Heart of Bob Vineyard Ministries Dr. Bob Vineyard heeded the call to missions in 1973, having felt the call to preach at the early age of four. With over five decades of different ministry roles, he now dedicates himself entirely to missions.
