As exciting as it is to sell one “high,” our primary goal remains to produce and market bulls to commercial cattleman that generate calves with vigor at birth, curve bending performance as they develop, and yield premiums regardless of their end point - on the rail or in the replacement pen, without breaking the bank.
PAP Testing
There continues to be a strong demand for PAP tested bulls in the Western region. Our unique alignments enable us to develop a set of bulls to work in the mountains without sacraficing performance and eye appeal. We could not be more proud of the set we sold in Castle Dale this past spring.
Our PAP bulls are sorted based primarily on pedigree, birthweight, and weaning weight upon arrival into our yard in late September. Those that “check the boxes” are shipped to Laramie for 6 weeks, and then PAP tested by the one and only, Dr. Tim Holt. Once testing is completed, the bulls return to Arapahoe to continue their development and are prepped for sale day. We ship them out to Castle Dale a couple of days ahead of the sale so that they are available for viewing.
Combatting Drought Conditions New Program Donors
Everyone in our region has been touched in some way by the current drought conditions - fires, shortage of grass, rising price on hay, being turned back from lease ground. The lack of snow fall over the winter and late arrival of spring rain is putting us all in the same boat.
Stretching grazing this summer may need some additional support. Consider creep feeding pairs that need a little extra nutrition such as the 1st calf heifer pairs and the old cows with calves at side. Putting creep out will take some pressure off the cows, help calves grow and aid cows in maintaining body condition which is crucial for cycling and breed back.
Early weaning is another option. Again, takes pressure off of the cow and gives her and your pastures a break to recover before winter.
Open cows that have been carried all through the winter are still worth a lot with strong demand. Sell them to make room for the cows that did calve. Preg EVERYTHING in the fall. A cow has three tasks to complete her job; get bred, have a calf, and raise that calf. If she doesn’t breed, she can’t do her job. She doesn’t need a “partisipation trophy” or an endless number of chances. Consider keeping a few more replacements in the fall if you need to maintain your numbers.
Feeder Cattle Network
As summer progresses, and you begin to consider the logistics of marketing your feeder cattle, we have built strong relationships with both salebarns and video markets. Making breeding decisions is a wild part of the seedstock business. Think about it - the cows we are flushing and AIing right now are going to calve in the spring of 2027, and those progeny won’t be marketed until the spring of 2028. In short, we are committed to today’s choices for two whole years without knowing if we made the right call or not. Some people live for the excitement of what those new genetics could mean, while others cringe and play it safe with what they know. It’s ultimately a bit of balancing act - utilitzing a combination of tried and true as well as dipping your toes into something new. We have some ole faithful donors - Grace, Jodie, 2B, and 802U; these ladies have withstood the test of time and generated almost 300 progeny to date that are recorded in Simmental.
We are excited about the bulls we will be offering in 2027 out of some of these new females, including the ladies pictured below. The 666L donor is a direct daughter of W/C Angel 0102H, aka Grace, making her a half sister to the popular Top Gun sons we featured on the March Editon earlier this year. We anticipate her offspring to pack that power and performance advantage that Powerline is known for.
Basin Joy 8471 was perchased back in 2024 as a breeding piece we could use to generate the next great set of half bloods. She is impressive from nose to tail with an advantage in marbling and practical Angus managment EPDs.
