ne minute, we are planning Memorial Day weekend and the next, it’s Labor Day festivities. I guess that’s life but man, I wish we could slow it down. When you’re a kid, you can’t wait for summer, schools out and time to hit the water. Funny thing is it not that different a few decades later, still living for the summer. And what a summer it has been, actually what a year it has been in the Gulf Coast boating world. It starts early with February boat shows and then doesn’t stop. Boat show season truly runs from January til the first of May, and even earlier if you’re planning to attend the Ft Lauderdale Boat Show, always held on Halloween weekend. But from a local Gulf Coast viewpoint, it’s pretty much a spring time thing. In May, just as we think we will get a breather from 3 day weekend events, tournament season begins. So I have probably said this before, but my early obsessions with salt water boating began 20 years ago when I randomly discovered the Emerald Coast Billfish Classic on one of my many trips from Tennessee to Sandestin. I quickly adopted a tradition of always planning a trip to Destin for ECBC week. Little did I know this was only the tip of the iceberg. It would be years later with the launch of BOAT SOUTH Magazine in 2024, that I would discover the plethora of Billfish tournaments each weekend throughout the summer. Along the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle to the coastal areas of Alabama and Mississippi, tournaments are not only a hobby, but

a way of life for many. One of the beauties of this industry to me is the diversity depending on the scale of the tournaments. You see everything from a few buddies who pool some entry fee money together to put their recreational boat and fishing skills to the test… to teams who can easily spend a million dollars funding a season. My analogy of this level of the sport is that it is Nascar on the water. While it may not have the obvious corporate sponsors on the hood, many of these boats, captains and crew are well funded, well trained and extremely passionate about what they do. And did I say competitive, in the most friendly manner possible of course! So for now, start stashing that mattress money. Maybe next year is the time to try your luck at catching the elusive blue, and landing a big payday if your timing is right! Throughout 2026, we’ve had a blast bringing these events to the pages of BOAT SOUTH Magazine. See y’all in January when we start it all over again!

he Emerald Coast welcomed a new addition to its boating calendar as the Destin Boat & Yacht Show came to Sunset Isle Yacht Club on Okaloosa Island May 1-3. Positioned on Choctawhatchee Bay between Fort Walton Beach and Destin,, the three-day event brought together boat dealers, manufacturers, marine businesses and boating enthusiasts for a weekend built around the Gulf Coast lifestyle. From offshore center consoles and bay boats to tritoons and luxury yachts, the show offered something for virtually every kind of Gulf Coast boater. Marine electronics, fishing tackle, boating accessories and other coastal lifestyle products rounded out the displays, while food, drinks, demonstrations and seminars gave visitors plenty to explore beyond the docks. The setting was a major part of the attraction. Sunset Isle’s modern 142-slip marina provides wide docks and fairways along with accommodations for everything from smaller recreational boats to large yachts, making it a natural venue for an in-water show of this scale. The event also served as the final stop of the 2026 Gulf Coast Boat Tour, following earlier shows in Panama City Beach and Orange Beach. More than simply a place to shop for a new boat, organizers designed the weekend as a celebration of the boating culture that surrounds the Destin-Fort Walton Beach area - and established the potential for another annual tradition on the Gulf Coast boating calendar.

Along the shores of St. Andrews Bay, one of Panama City's most distinctive neighborhoods is moving forward without losing sight of what made it special in the first place. There are plenty of waterfront communities along Florida's Gulf Coast, but St. Andrews has always been a little different.This is not simply a place where people come to look at the water. The water is part of the community's everyday life. Boats leave the docks in the morning. Charter captains prepare for another day on the bay and Gulf. Anglers stop for fuel, ice and supplies. Shrimp boats, recreational boats and working vessels share a waterfront that has been connected to fishing, boatbuilding and maritime commerce for generations. At the center of much of that activity is St. Andrews Marina, now undergoing a significant renovation while remaining open and operational. The marina continues to provide fuel, fishing access, charter services, boating excursions and transient slips while work progresses. Panama City has also moved forward with reconstruction of the marina bulkhead and plans for additional boat slips - improvements designed to strengthen the waterfront for years to come. A new chapter in the marina's operation began April 1, 2026, when Coastal Marina Management (CMM) assumed management of St. Andrews Marina. The marina management company is now overseeing day-to-day operations as the facility continues its restoration and improvements, bringing additional marina-management experience to one of the city's most important working waterfronts. But the marina is only part of the St. Andrews story. Walk a block or two from the docks and the waterfront transitions naturally into Beck Avenue, the neighborhood's traditional commercial spine. Restaurants, bars, boutiques, galleries and gathering places sit within an easy walk of the bay, creating the kind of waterfront district that is increasingly difficult to manufacture - and nearly impossible to duplicate. Historic St. Andrews traces its roots to fishing, shipping, boatbuilding and the salt industry, and its connection with the water remains central to its identity today. The neighborhood has evolved considerably through the

years, but Beck Avenue and the surrounding waterfront still retain the feel of a genuine coastal community rather than a purpose-built resort district. That personality is perhaps most apparent in the businesses that line the neighborhood. There is Captain's Table Fish House, a longtime Beck Avenue seafood stop, and nearby Hunt's Oyster Bar, where the simple tradition of sitting down to fresh seafood has become part of the St. Andrews experience. The Grocery Kitchen & Taproom, located in a Beck Avenue building with deep neighborhood roots, adds another distinctly local gathering place. And Alice's on Bayview, literally in view of the Marina, is a must try for wonderful food and a relaxed coastal atmosphere. Brad Stephens and his business Sun Jammers. has also been a driving force for the renovation and revitalization of St Andrews, and the marina in particular, for a long time. On any given afternoon, St. Andrews can feel simultaneously like a fishing village, neighborhood gathering spot and small entertainment district. A boat may be pulling into the marina while customers line up for oysters a few hundred feet away. Shoppers move between Beck Avenue businesses as fishermen clean up from a morning on the water. Later, restaurant patios fill, live music starts and the western sky over St. Andrews Bay becomes part of the evening. Weekend markets, festivals and traditions such as the Blessing of the Fleet add another layer to that community life. Historic St. Andrews remains a place where residents and visitors can park the car and spend hours moving between the waterfront, restaurants, shops, parks and marina. That is why the work now taking place at St. Andrews Marina matters beyond the marina itself. Improving docks, slips, bulkheads and waterfront infrastructure helps preserve the activity that has always given this neighborhood its identity. A healthy marina brings boaters to the waterfront. A working waterfront supports charter captains and marine businesses. Those people, in turn, walk into restaurants and shops along Beck Avenue. It is an ecosystem economic, cultural and maritime. Florida's Gulf Coast continues to change, and waterfront property becomes more valuable with every passing year. St. Andrews' greatest asset may be that it still feels connected to the reason coastal communities existed here in the first place.

Story by: Jeff Watson Photos by: Jeff Watson and Fran B One of the Gulf Coast’s longest-running big-game fishing traditions returned to downtown Pensacola June 10–14 as the Pensacola Big Game Fishing Club hosted the 55th Annual Pensacola International Billfish Tournament. The tournament brought some of the Gulf’s top offshore crews to Pensacola, with boats departing for blue water and returning to the scales at Palafox Pier, where spectators gathered along the downtown waterfront to see the weekend’s catches come to the dock. The 2026 field included 35 teams and 154 registered anglers, competing for billfish honors as well as tuna, wahoo, dolphin and other tournament awards. Fishing began following Thursday’s shotgun start at Pensacola Pass, with public weigh-ins Friday and Saturday at Palafox Pier before the tournament concluded with Sunday’s awards ceremony When the final lines were reeled in, Gregg Trenor’s 62 Viking Boujee Marlin, led by Capt. Hunter Smith, stood atop the leaderboard. The team released four blue marlin, accumulating 2,000 tournament points and earning the title of 2026 Pensacola International Billfish Tournament Champion. All told, the tournament awarded more than $251,000 in payouts. After 55 tournaments, the combination of serious offshore competition, Gulf Coast fishing tradition and Pensacola’s downtown waterfront continues to make the Pensacola International Billfish Tournament an important stop on the Gulf Coast billfish circuit.

he Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic returned to Baytowne Marina at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in June for its 24th annual tournament. First held in 2003, the ECBC has grown from a relatively small Gulf Coast competition into one of the region’s premier big-money billfish tournaments, regularly attracting top boats, crews and anglers from across the Southeast. Tournament week combines serious offshore competition with several days of festivities around Baytowne. Events include registration, the Captain’s Meeting and Kick-Off Party, the Sponsors Party at Ovides, live music and the popular Vendor Village, where tournament sponsors and exhibitors set up throughout the event. Spectators also gather along the docks and around the marina for the weigh-ins, making the ECBC extremely spectator-friendly. As mother nature showed her presence leading up to the tournament, rough Gulf conditions delayed the 2026 fishing schedule, but 59 teams still competed for more than $1.46 million in prize money. The tournament’s biggest moment came when Metal Masher arrived at the scales with a massive 780.4 lbs blue marlin caught by 17-year-old angler Teddy Tinney. The catch propelled the team to $482,487.84 in total winnings, making Metal Masher the tournament’s top money winner. After more than two decades, the ECBC continues to stand out as one of the Gulf Coast’s signature summer tournaments, combining big fish, substantial prize money and the atmosphere of Baytowne Marina and The Village of Baytowne Wharf.

he Bay Point Billfish Open returned to Pan ama City Beach June 23-28, bringing a s trong fleet, big-money competition and several days of waterfront festivities to Point South Marina at Bay Point. The 2026 tournament drew 86 boats and offered a record purse of more than $1.8 million. The marina is a fitting home for the event. The former Bay Point Marina was rebuilt following Hurricane Michael and today features 180 slips with accommodations for larger sportfishing boats. The tournament also carries on the legacy of the original Bay Point Billfish Tournament, which ran from 1984 to 2012 before being revived in 2023. The modern event is backed by a local ownership group that includes John Warren, Scott Rossman, George Roberts and Jay Quave, with Bert Merritt serving as tournament director. Point South Marina, The St. Joe Company and Reel Fun Fishing-Panama City Beach are among the event’s key partners. Tournament week included a captain-and-crew cookout, registration and captain’s meeting, kickoff party, vendor village and live entertainment, with Randy Houser and Montgomery Gentry among the featured performers. Saturday night’s final weigh-in brought the largest crowds to the marina as the tournament champions were decided. The fleet recorded an impressive 194 billfish catches with 193 released, including 74 blue marlin, 34 white marlin and 86 sailfish. With a strong purse, competitive fishing and a lively waterfront atmosphere, the Bay Point Billfish Open continues to build on its place as one of the Gulf Coast’s premier summer tournaments.

A Northwest Florida Developer’s Vision to Unite Boaters From Around the World Story By Will Estell

here are places you visit because they happen to be along the way and then there are those special places you purposely point the bow toward, knowing the journey itself is part of the adventure. Green Turtle Cay, tucked among the Abaco Islands of The Bahamas, definitely falls into the latter category. For island-hoppers exploring the Abacos, or travelers simply looking for that increasingly rare combination of beautiful water, friendly people and a slower pace, Green Turtle Cay feels like the Bahamas many of us envision, away from the cruise ships and over commercialization. And now, Beach Weekend Bahamas is giving visitors another good reason to visit, thanks to Fort Walton Beach, Florida native and visionary entrepreneur, Jayme Nabors. I recently sat down with Nabors in the boardroom of their new Beach Weekend headquarters to gain a little more insight into the company’s newest marina acquisition, Beach Weekend Bahamas.

Set on 8.5 acres overlooking Black Sound, this newest development in the Beach Weekend branded family combines a 42-slip protected marina, restaurant, bar, pool area, and the ability to accommodate vessels up to 100 feet, with individually metered power and water at each slip. Nabors says a signed fuel contract with Shell means both gas and diesel are available dockside, removing one more logistical headache for anyone cruising the islands. There’s also a full-service marine repair facility. The abundance of available fuel alone makes the marina a welcome layover for those arriving by water, but Nabors tells me this isn’t the kind of marina where you simply tie up, plug in and disappear below deck. “We designed this marina to be the ideal spot to drop by, refuel, enjoy some great food, have some fun, and stick around a few days on your way to wherever the sea is taking you. Spend an afternoon beside the pool, grab something to eat, order a drink at the bar and chances are you’ll soon be trading stories with boaters who arrived from somewhere completely different than you did… but are looking for the same good time,” Nabors said. That social aspect has always been one of the best parts of exploring the Bahamas. This is the kind of place where the days are counted by laughter, good times, and fun as opposed to the Yacht Master or Royal Oak on your wrist. A dock can become a neighborhood remarkably fast when everyone has an appetite for new friendships, and as is often the case, a convincing -albeit often embellished- story about how they got there and where they’re headed. While many guests have praised the pool area, restaurant, bar, and friendly dockside assistance, others have noted how inviting conveniences like clean showers and laundry facilities are, after BOATSOUTH.COM

spending days or weeks cruising. As for other amenities, the property also offers Wi-Fi, water hookups, restrooms, ice, a ship store and even three new pickleball courts - all testaments to Nabors’ vision of catering to customers at a level that will keep them coming back. All of these are products of the same philosophy that has underscored the success of Beach Weekend’s other ventures: from their marina, boat rentals, and vacation homes in Destin, Fort Walton Beach and Navarre to their Key West Beach Weekend Marina and boat rentals, to their Beach Weekend branded coffee shops. Nabors and his team simply believe in giving their customers the absolute best product and service they can provide… and then continuing to get even better at it. In addition to the slips, Beach Weekend Bahamas currently offers two spacious five bedroom vacation houses, with an additional 10 villas underway as part of their 28 vacation home masterplan for Green Turtle Cay. This, Nabors says, will offer families and groups, from countries near and far, the opportunity to experience authentic Bahamian island life while still enjoying the marina atmosphere and associated Beach Weekend amenities. As an example, one of the current homes available, The Blue Marlin, is an impressive five-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath coastal retreat accommodating up to 10 guests. Each bedroom features a king bed, and the house includes a full kitchen, open living spaces, expansive balconies, laundry facilities and private dock access. All of this, along with available add on amenities such as golf carts, boats, and other specialty services. When I asked Nabors what makes Beach Weekend Bahamas such an ideal destination for adventure lovers looking for something a little out of the ordinary, he simply replied. “We’ve put everything into bringing the Beach Weekend brand to the Bahamas. It’s not just the lifestyle people love, but the cutting-edge operations behind it. This isn’t a marina with some homes next to it. he excitement of Blue Marlin Grand Championship week got an early start this July as Grander Marine welcomed anglers, captains, customers and friends for a kickoff gathering. The event brought together many of the familiar faces of Gulf Coast sportfishing for an evening centered around boats, fishing and the anticipation of one of the region’s biggest tournament weeks. With Grander Marine located right at The Wharf, the gathering provided a natural setting for teams and supporters to reconnect before attention turned offshore. A highlight of the evening was the tournaments annual St Jude Fighting Chair Challenge, a popular tradition that adds a little friendly competition and plenty of entertainment. ach July, some of the Gulf Coast’s top offshore teams gather at The Wharf in Orange Beach for the Blue Marlin Grand Championship, the exciting finale of the region’s summer billfish season. Known as “The Greatest Show in Sportfishing,” the tournament combines serious offshore competition with packed evening weigh-ins at Marlin Circle. First held at The Wharf in 2012, the Blue Marlin Grand Championship has become one of the premier events on the Gulf tournament circuit. Teams run deep into the northern Gulf in search of blue mar-lin, while white marlin and sailfish add to the catch-and-release competition. Yellowfin tuna, dolphin and wahoo make up the major gamefish divisions. The 2026 event drew a record 75 teams competing for more than $2.1 million in prize money. The week’s biggest moment belonged to Orange Beachbased A Work of Art. Angler Brandon Favre brought a 641.2-pound blue marlin to the scales, giving the team the overall championship. Capt. Ja-son Buck and crew also released seven blue marlin and earned a tournament-record $785,556 payout. The tournament also marked the conclusion of the Gulf Coast Triple Crown, a four-event series that rewards consistency throughout the summer. A Work of Art captured the 2026 Triple Crown with 925 points, giving Capt. Jason Buck his fifth Triple Crown championship.

This highly recommended staple of Destin dining is a must-go for anyone visiting Northwest Florida’s Gulf Coast. The original Dewey Destin’s location, where it all began, is situated right near the public boat access just off Calhoun Avenue, allowing one to float in, tie up or walk up the dock for some

of the best seafood anywhere in the state. This original iteration of the now famous Dewey Destin’s brand may look like a shack, but it offers idyllic views of Crab Island and old Florida charm like few other places anywhere in Destin or Navarre. At the original Dewey’s you don’t even need a server. Simply order at the window, grab yourself a table, and take in the beautiful view while enjoying a cold drink, and feasting on the kind of freshly prepared meal that has made Dewey Destin’s a favorite of over a million coastal food lovers over the decades. I can assure you that everything I have ever eaten at any of the locations has always been consistently great. I recommend the peel and eat shrimp, as well as any of their grilled, blackened, or bronzed catch of the day choices. Remember, this is a real seafood restaurant, not just a restaurant that happens to serve a little seafood! In addition to the original Dewey’s you can also visit Dewey Destin’s on Destin Harbor, and Dewey Destin’s right on the sound in Navarre. You’ll be glad you did, but don’t take my word for it. Go try it!

Located at the end of South Palafox Street, overlooking the Palafox Pier Marina and the views of Pensacola Bay, this Pensacola hotspot is a great place to dine and unwind straight from the boat. The staple of

Pensacola coastal dining offers indoor and outdoor dining, both offering remarkable views, friendly service, and not least of all, spectacular food from their well appointed brunch, lunch, and dinner menus. From cold beer, an expansive wine list, custom cocktails and dishes like their Bayfront Baltimore Crab Cakes, Signature Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, and Southern Fried Chicken there is a dish for everyone at Jaco’s. I highly suggest trying their Old Bay Aioli and Mango Salsa too. Whatever you choose at this waterside watering hole and eatery there is no doubt you will head back to your boat (or vehicle) satisfied and looking forward to the next visit to try another of their wonderful dishes. Transient slips are available next door at the Pensacola Pier Yacht Harbor Marina, and it’s a good idea to call ahead. If your boating crew is a big one, you can also call ahead to the restaurant as Jaco’s often accepts larger group reservations by phone.
