What drew you to the Real Estate industry? Years ago I enjoyed searching listings and finding the perfect home to flip. Then I’d call my Realtor to write it up. When I “retired” to Costa Rica I met some Blue Zone Realty International™ team members and was hooked! Why did you decide to work with Blue Zone Realty International™? After talking with a couple people on the team I felt it was the best fit. I liked that the team was not all one particular personality trait. Various backgrounds can give you a different perspective giving me an opportunity to learn from others and share my own point of view.

Give us an overview of your experience of the Real Estate market in the last 12 months. The best ride in the amusement park! I prefer a challenge. Four out of my recent ten deals have been finding properties that are not on the market. It helps being involved in the community and knowing who is contemplating selling. What are some of the highlights of your Real Estate career in Costa Rica? Having the New York Times® feature my listing in their Real Estate section. I wasn’t prepared for the volume of calls. They printed my cell phone number in the article! I was receiving calls until 1am each day.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering an investment in this area? Ask lots of questions, and be a good listener. It’s important for expat buyers to remember that this is not going to be the same process as “back home”. It’s important to put the client at ease so they feel comfortable to ask questions openly. Terminology in a contract may be different from what they would be used to. I would rather my clients be completely aware of everything rather than have things come up later in the process that could be challenging for them to navigate.

What do you do on a personal level to maintain your edge in this competitive market? I treat my name, and person, as a brand. It is always possible that you are meeting a future client. Having a supportive husband certainly helps! He is great at meeting with people and sharing stories when I need to recharge. What should newcomers expect in their first 12 months living in Costa Rica? For some, challenges will occur. For most paradise! To live in paradise, often newcomers to Costa Rica assume it will be just like home. Depending how rural an area you choose, it could be a drive to get to services. The first time you try and find a plumber to work on Sunday you will remember that many years ago, Sunday was a time to spend with family. I love meeting up with clients after a few months because most will tell you of their adventures with enthusiasm and joy. How important is team and broker support for your continued success? Our senses need a boost every now and then. Having team members and a broker to toss ideas around and ask for an opinion is a valuable resource. A team member may see or hear something you’ve missed, already had an experience that can help you better market a property, and even coach you through a difficult transaction. Why did you choose to live in the Costa Ballena region of Costa Rica? I will never forget the first time driving down the coastal road and rounding a curve to see the mountains rising up out of the ocean. Hills of many shades of green, rock outcroppings with waves crashing, and long stretches of beach. We immediately knew this is where we would end up.

What drew you to the Real Estate industry? After 8 exciting years of my life in the hospitality and tourism industry, I discovered the necessity that a great part of my hotel clients was in finding and buying the right property in Costa Rica. As a Costa Rican, I felt the duty to represent this country with integrity and responsibility and get into the real estate industry to help both sellers and buyers achieve their goals. My background as a hotel and project manager allowed me to build helpful relationships with key community members and also to have a profound understanding of local rules and regulations. My goal every day is to guide and advise all of our clients and friends in the best way possible.

What is it about your profession that you like the most? I enjoy and love every single moment of my profession. There are many things I could mention, for example, the interaction with my clients, overcoming challenges with the sales and purchasing process, and meeting new clients. I think life gives us new lessons every day from positive and negative moments and it is the same thing at work. When you love what you do, you enjoy all of it. If I have to pick the thing that I like the most about my profession, I think it would be helping other people to make their dreams come true, guiding them through the process, and advising them after they buy or sell a property. What do you enjoy the most about living in Costa Rica? During my early years as a child I had the opportunity to spend a couple of seasons in the South of Italy working as whitewater rafting guide. It was there when I decided not to live anywhere else on the planet other than Costa Rica. What I enjoy the most about living in Costa Rica is the warmth of my family the people who live here, and the abundance of nature. “Pura Vida” is a lifestyle and for me it means that everything is going to be fine no matter the situation. As a professional whitewater kayaker, I love to enjoy the beautiful rivers and mangrove forest that we have in the Costa Ballena area along the Pacific Coast. My heart belongs to the Costa Ballena region of Costa Rica. What advice would you give to someone who is considering an investment in this area? My first advice would be to be patient. Costa Rica is a developing country and that brings with it a unique set of challenges. However, if you have the correct advisors working on your behalf, there should be no reason for concern. The second advice would be to check all the undiscovered areas. Make sure you find a Realtor who will be willing to get out of the comfort zone and will show you as many different options as possible. 60% of my buyers come with the idea of buying in one specific area but, after seeing different towns in the area, end up buying in another location that they like better. My last advice would be to ask as many questions as possible. What do you see happening in the next 6 months in this market? I think the next 6 months will be very important for the real estate industry in our market. I see the market in our area stabilizing a bit due to the lack of inventory. However, the new pre-construction projects will be the new focus that more people will want to buy. Most of our buyers are cash buyers so a lot of people were hesitating whether or not to invest in a property in Costa Rica. I think the new government in Costa Rica, the positive health statistics after the pandemic, the great tourism board job advertising, and the visitor’s rates will put Costa Rica again on potential buyers mind as one of the safest destination to live and invest. What are some of the highlights of your real estate career in Costa Rica? My first year in the real estate industry has been a great learning experience. I have closed deals from $60k to $1.3M. For me every client and every transaction has the same importance. Working with both sellers and buyers at the same has been very interesting. I think I have been an important source for my clients in finding new listings. What are some of the highlights of your real estate career in Costa Rica? I would have to say that there are so many moments, that it is hard to chose just one. When I was young, I never would have imagined the fulfillment I receive in this business. Helping others has given me so much opportunity in life. To serve and to build a future for my wife and new baby has taught me life lessons that I will use and pass on to others.

What should newcomers expect in their first 12 months living in Costa Rica? Costa Rica offers a simple lifestyle and being a part of a community is important to the Costa Rican people. Give us an overview of your experience of the Real Estate market in the last 12 months. The past 12 months have been extremely busy. The market has changed from a buyers market to a sellers market. We have a lower inventory of homes available than we had in the past because many people are discovering that they can work remotely and they are looking for a different way of life versus where they are currently living. People from all different backgrounds and various ages are choosing to move here from all over the world. Why did you choose to live in the Costa Ballena region of Costa Rica? I initially moved to the Northern region of Costa Rica and lived close to the border of Nicaragua. I barley spoke Spanish at that time and almost no one in my community spoke English. Needless to say, it was a very tough experience. After traveling all over the country, I visited the Costa Ballena region and fell in love with it. I am in my second year in Costa Rica and think I can bring a unique perspective to my clients. Yes, it’s a magical place and the primary reason our market is growing at this rapid pace is because everyone wants their own little slice of paradise. However, things move much slower here. It’s part of the charm and part of the challenge. If you can settle into the slower pace having a trip to the bank being your primary outing for the day, experiencing much slower service at our many fine restaurants, and waiting in line at the grocery a little longer because the check-out girl is exchanging pleasantries with one of the locals, all the rest will fall into place. There are a lot of cultural differences here but acclimating to this pace of life adds to the adventure. One key requirement to be embraced here and make life easier in Costa Rica is having exceptional manners. The culture here expects it and is seen as a form of respect. Learning and experiencing the tropical lifestyle and about a different culture brings new perspectives and new growth. Enjoying everything that Costa Rica has to offer is a beautiful experience, from the environment, the weather, the food, the pace of life, the people, and the new friendships. Expect also that when you leave one location or culture for another, there will be things you will miss and new things you’ll enjoy and embrace. Give yourself time to notice all of it and adapt at your own pace. Do connect with people as there is a great community here, opportunities to meet people and volunteer on worthwhile projects, and learn a few Spanish words a day. My husband and I fell in love with Costa Rica on our first trip here in February of 2001. During this trip we were so convinced Costa Rica was in our future, we bought a condominium in Manuel Antonio Here we visited each year and found ways we could make the transition fully to live and work here. In 2006, we sold our belongings, packed our bags with our energetic Pomeranian in tow, and we departed from Western Canada to start a new life here. What do you enjoy the most about living in Costa Rica? For me, the jungle is magical. As a child I dreamed of living in a place like this. I spent my time catching snakes, lizards, and bugs. My dreams included destinations like the Amazon, the Congo, and Kenya, to mention a few. As I became an adult I came to the realization that these places had drawbacks. Great for vacation but??? Costa Rica is a very unique place on planet earth. Whether it’s being able to watch 4 species of monkeys from your balcony or counting how many Blue Morpho butterflies I see while driving my son to school. Every day, in itself, is amazing. There is a huge amount of wildlife from Tapirs to Sloths. I’ve seen animals here I never knew existed and more than can be individually mentioned in a short article The jungles here are lush, healthy, and grand. The amazing Cieba tree grows here. It is called the tree of life and what inspired the movie Avatar. These trees are massive and once you have a chance to stand under one you will see why they are called the tree of life. Costa Rica is considered to be one of the most bio-diverse places on earth, on land, in rivers, and in the sea. Because of the mountains it has above the tree line, this small country quickly moves the rains to the ocean with countless waterfalls at every turn. As a result, mosquitoes are seldom seen in our area unless you are in a flat pasture. Costa Rica does, however, have an abundance of exotic yet harmless insects. The Rhinoceros beetles visit every year and I’m always excited to see them. Again harmless. Many are also undiscovered and the different types available are staggering. Leave the porch light on and check it out in the morning. You will not be disappointed. As well, Costa Rican people bring out the best in everyone around them. The laid back attitude and demeanor of the small communities is so relaxed and pleasant that it is a welcome reprieve from the fast-paced life of the concrete jungle and people just start to relax and rejuvenate. These are the reasons why so many people come here on vacation in Costa Rica and never leave. It really is a paradise wonderland.
