YEARBOOK OF CLASS 2004, JUTH
FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCES, UNIVERSITY OF JOS

We celebrate 20 years of being ‘THE HANDS’, bringing healing and hope to many lives all over the world.

ICONSIDER IT A great honour and privilege to write the foreword for this all important piece of documentary of inestimable value.
The title for this yearbook is appropriately “Testimonies of our Voyage.” This is because it is telling our individual and collective stories and struggles, ventures and victories, hurdles and paddles through the jungle (or ocean) of life in the last two decades of medical practice across the globe.
I want to sincerely appreciate God on behalf of the entire class for seeing us through all of these adventures in strength and good health, to see and mark this landmark milestone of our sojourn in the medical career.
I celebrate the editorial team for painstakingly putting together this yearbook that peeps through our past, showcases our present state and signals a greater ray of hope for our future.
Thanks for a job well-done.
To all the members of the class of 2004 of the Jos University Medical School fondly called “The Hands”, I say a big Congratulations!

Sule Ibrahim Jibrin (SIJ)
Class rep. (1998 - 2000)

- Jummai Apata

WE ARE UNIVERSITY of Jos (Unijos) Medical Students 2004 set. We call ourselves ‘The Hands’- it’s a long story to be told another day.
Walking into the beautiful campus of University of Jos in April of 1997, we took the first steps of our journey to becoming medical doctors. Our first year (100 level) mostly consisted of natural science courses with some general studies (G.S.) courses. We were baptized into the rigors of medical school with challenging courses like Chemistry 101 and Math 104. Physics and Zoology courses were no less challenging. G.S. courses were a welcome relief but we still needed to put in the work.
Soon after, we successfully moved into the preclinical section of the Unijos medical school. If we thought that 100 level was challenging, we were in for a big surprise. Anatomy, Biochemistry and Physiology showed us that being a medical doctor involves tenacity, humility and the ability to learn from one’s failures. Visions of the Anatomy lab cadavers (with the Cunningham’s manual), histology lab slides/steeple chase and Biochemistry/Physiology test failures are still vivid in our minds today. After two gruesome years, and an
excruciating first MBBS exam (our first professional exam "popularly called first MB"), we finally made it into the clinical section of the Unijos medical school which required us to be trained in Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), by interacting with live humans this time.
JUTH was a different ball game. We arrived in our crisp white ward coats, Littmann stethoscopes hanging round our necks, believing that we had made it in life by getting to 400 level (clinicals) and

that we had achieved the unachievable. It didn’t take long for us to realize that we were at the very bottom of the JUTH chain: all the way below 500 and 600 level, junior residents, senior residents and consultants.
So began a life of classes in the morning taught by consultants and ward rounds afterwards with residents and consultants involving intense drilling on clinical concepts we had learned in class. We could barely catch our breath.
We learned to clerk patients (the process of gathering medical information from a patient and conducting a physical exam on them), to present during ward rounds and get humiliated in front of the patient, their relatives, our classmates, residents, nurses and everyone else in the open ward who could hear. More lessons on humility. In all these things, we persevered, we studied, we ate, we slept, studied some more, and on and on until finally we saw the light at the end of the tunnel.
After many years of being immersed in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology courses with all their subspecialties, after passing second MB and third MB, we could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

and ready to take on the world.
Our experiences as house officers (medical interns) in various hospitals across the country, and medical officers during our national youth service (NYSC) year abound. We also have stories from residency or non-clinical pathways that we took to get to where we are today. All these will probably be shared in another edition of this publication.
For now, we are grateful to be here- 20 years later. The journey has been long but fruitful. We lost some on the way, yet God has been faithful.
We celebrate 20 years of being ‘The Hands’, bringing healing and hope to many lives all over the world. We look forward to celebrating many, many more years serving God and humanity with our blessed hands.

With great joy and relief, we finally graduated (most of us) in July of 2004 with some of us having to wait a few months to a year to retake some courses and get that degree. After more than seven years of intense training, we had emerged as medical doctors: strong, confident, resilient, humble, knowledgeable

This is dedicated to the people we have lost on the way. Their memories would be ever fresh in our minds. Your lights will keep shining

September 24th 1978June 7th 2003
March 4th 1978November 24th 2014
December 3rd 1976January 30th 2022

Dear Theodora, Ezinne, and Shadrach,
THIS IS 2024, and, like a dream, 20 years have passed since our departure from the beloved Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) as medical doctors. For you, Theodora, 22 years have gone by, while for you, Ezinne, it has been 10 years. Shadi Shado, yours was just 2 years ago. Yet, we fondly remember you all, even though you aren’t here to share these memorable moments with us.
Such is life; how vividly we recall the times we shared, as if it were just yesterday. We all had dreams and looked forward to making a difference in our lives and the lives of many who would cross our paths as medical doctors. But, as the scripture says, "Man proposes, but God disposes." And so it was that God had greater and better plans for you all.

This is dedicated to the people we have lost on the way. Their memories would be ever fresh in our minds. Your lights will keep shining
We choose to celebrate the short time we shared with you. Looking at our school pictures, one will see that you were more than classmates or colleagues; you were our friends and like family to us. You formed part of the fabric woven into our shared journey. Your individual and unique personalities and dreams remain alive in our hearts, inspiring us to cherish every moment we have together.
May your souls continue to rest in eternal peace, and may we always celebrate the beautiful impact you made on all of us.
Adieu, dear friends, till we meet again someday!
- Steve Sasetu
- Obekpa I Obekpa (OIO)
BUMPING REFERS TO the meeting of 2 or more classmates, whether accidental or planned. It usually entails exchange of pleasantries, gist upon gist, snapshots, eating, especially fish and drinks. Sometimes, it entails songs, prayers and well wishes.
"Bumping" is as old as the period post-graduation (20 years), it only became "official" and prominently called "Bumping" on the class WhatsApp platform a few years ago, with snapshots, gists and fish eating increasingly taking center stage.

There was a class reunion in Lafia in 2017 where El-Adis hosted those who could come to a wonderful weekend of celebration.

Some notable bumping locations include: Jos, Abuja, Kaduna, Gombe (where lots of fishes lost their lives to The Hands!), Makurdi, Kenya, Seychelles, U.S.A

Can you identify the classmates that have ‘bumped’ the most?

As The Hands, we’ve remained faithful to our God-given purpose, making an impact across different spheres of society.
THE TERM "THE Brotherhood" became popular towards the end of our fourth year. It was used in reference to a group of backbenchers including: OIO (aka the Chief Chiefo), Adanu, Oji (aka the Big Boss Jiggaman), Ambitious, Attadoga and Sani.
Initially, the Brotherhood was misunderstood to be a group of mischievous but influential young men. This misperception triggered the formation of a rival female group, known as The Sisterhood. However, while The Sisterhood never quite caught on, The Brotherhood continued to gain popularity.
The Brotherhood is now fondly remembered as the group that promoted unity, brought humor and excitement to schoolwork and advanced solutions to challenges facing the class.

Honorary membership now includes SIJ, Guzol, Pam, Diala, Mani, Addis, Sasetu, Tom U, Ogeriya, Kene, and Olije. The legacy of the Brotherhood lives on and membership is now open to any classmate who shares our philosophy and values.
At our next "conference" in 2025, The Brotherhood will extend an olive branch to The Sisterhood and provide whatever support they may need to revive their brand. After all, we are our brothers' and sisters' keepers.

Obekpa I. Obekpa (OIO) "The Chief Chiefo" of The Brotherhood

WE CELEBRATED OUR 20th anniversary from November 14th to 16th 2024 with a list of interesting events to enable us unwind, catch up with each other and also have fun (we have earned it!).

We also wanted to give back to the institution that developed us into who we are today, so we completed two much needed projects for the preclinical and clinical campuses, based on discussions with key persons in each of these campuses on what would be most beneficial to the students.

DAY 1 | THURSDAY 14TH NOVEMBER 2024
Arrival and Bumping extreme
We arrived from various parts of the country. Some of us had not seen each other in many years, so it was great to catch up over dinner at Crispan Hotel Rayfield, Jos that evening. We enjoyed good food and conversations, and took some nice group photos.

DAY 2 | FRIDAY 15TH NOVEMBER 2024
Project commissioning in Unijos
Pre clinical campus & JUTH. Prayers for the class
We showed up at the University of Jos main campus, on Bauchi road at 8:30am dressed in our class branded T-shirts to commission the new improved seats we had constructed for the histology lab where we once sat and learned. In attendance were Provost - Prof.

Caleb Mpyet, Dean Preclinicals: Prof Solomon, Dr McNeil, HOD Anatomy: Dr Mohammed and student representatives.
the solar street lights we had installed to provide added security for students as they commute between their hostels and the hospital. In attendance were Provost: Prof Caleb Mpyet, Deputy Provost: Prof. Envuladu, Dean Dentistry: Prof Rolland Agbara, Deputy Dean Clinicals: Prof. Abok and student representatives. We took more group photos at JUTH and enjoyed looking around the environment.

We enjoyed fond memories while touring the environment. We then headed to JUTH now in Lamingo (different location from where we did our clinicals), to commission Juma’at prayers were held for the class in the afternoon by Muslim faithfuls.

We grabbed packed lunches to go, and later in the afternoon, we conducted a memory lane tour of Richard road and Bank road hostels. We rounded up the day at 4pm with a thanksgiving service at RCCG Dew and Manna Arena, Miango road, Jos where we shared great testimonies of what God has done for us over the years.

Final tour and Dinner
We conducted another memory lane tour of the main campus hostels - Village hostel, Abuja hostel and Naraguta hostel after which we enjoyed lunch and conversations together.
To crown the celebration, we ended with a formal dinner at Valada hotel Apollo Crescent Jos, at 6pm. We showed up dressed beautifully with our spouses or other family members and enjoyed a great evening of fun and sharing of memories, with good food and nice music.
It was an amazing celebration, and we look forward to many more years of celebrating together.

It’s been a long journey, but here we are…
With these words we began our story so many years ago when we set out together on an incredible journey, which we reflected on in our yearbook, 'The Odyssey', marking our arduous yet eventful passage through medical school. Now, more than two decades later, we have come full circle, with an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come and look forward, with confidence, to the road that lies ahead.
Twenty years have passed since we vowed to be agents of healing, peace, and positive change in our communities. In those years, we have had countless reasons to celebrate, with milestones marked by growth, success, and advancement. We’ve watched our classmates rise to positions of leadership, responsibility, and influence. As The Hands, we’ve remained faithful to our God-given purpose, making an impact across different spheres of society.
But alongside our joys, we have known sorrow and loss. We remember with great fondness our fallen comrades: first Dora, then Ezinne, and finally Shadrach. Each was taken too soon. We mourn their absence, yet we honor their memory, knowing that their legacy lives on in our hearts. Many of us have endured personal hardships or losses, and we recall especially the ordeal faced by two
of our colleagues and their families in the hands of kidnappers. We also remember how some of our colleagues overcame major health challenges with the help of God.
Dear friends, as we reflect on this momentous 20-year milestone, we acknowledge the challenges but remain steadfast. We are hard-pressed but not crushed; together, we march forward with renewed resolve and a passion to fulfill our calling.
This yearbook stands as a testament to our journey—capturing memories that have shaped us and envisioning paths yet to be walked.
The Yearbook Committee is deeply grateful for everyone’s contributions and dedication to making this project a reality. We offer special thanks to the editorial team, who has driven this project tirelessly. Without your efforts, it simply would not have been possible.
Long live the Class of 2004!
