Angela Mellor
9781789943894 | Paperback | 246x189mm | £25 / $35 / CAN $47
A contemporary guide to creating beautiful, translucent ceramics.
Porcelain and bone china are known and prized for their fineness, delicacy, and translucence, but can be difficult to use and pose particular problems for the potters and ceramic artists using it.
In LuminousClay, bone china expert Angela Mellor aims to demystify these clays, encouraging more ceramists to explore these exciting mediums. The book explains a new way of working with bone china, a clay body created by the addition of bone ash to porcelain. With the introduction of paper pulp the clay is transformed, allowing freedom of expression through handbuilding that was previously impossible and allowing the potter to take full advantage of its whiteness and translucency. Gorgeous photography throughout demonstrates how ceramicists around the world are able to create extraordinary pieces that ripple and bend light.
Angela Mellor started working in bone china in 1991. Moving to Australia in 1995, she conducted research at the University of Tasmania, Hobart, and completed an MA at Monash University, Melbourne in 2000. During this time she pioneered the use of bone china paperclay, gaining honourable mentions in Japan and Korea. Angela set up a studio in Perth in 2000 and was awarded a Crafts Council Grant to work with a lighting designer, culminating in a solo exhibition at Craftwest. She returned to the UK in 2006 to work in her studio in Cambridgeshire.

Heritage Techniques for the Contemporary Textile Crafter
Sally Pointer
9781789943061 | Paperback | 280x216mm | £30 / $40 / CAN $53
Put down your knitting and pick up something new – and old – with these 20 projects teaching needle-looped stitches from across the millennia.
Nalbinding – loop-manipulated textiles that use just a single needle – can be traced as far back as the Mesolithic period and is still popular in Scandinavia. The results of the various techniques can resemble wool knitting or be worked as an open mesh akin to netting; it can be dense and warm or light and airy; and can use thick woollen yarns or be worked in thin, smooth plant fibres.
This guide containing modern-day designs will teach you various nalbinding techniques and stitches dating from the Stone Age, through the Bronze Age, Ancient Egypt, into medieval Scandinavia and beyond. Sally Pointer’s photographic step-bystep instructions will show you how to create your own knotless netting shopping bag, drawing on a Neolithic textile fragment; craft a messenger bag using Oslo, Mammen and Dalby stitches; and knock up practical old favourites such as pixie hats, socks, slippers and, of course, mittens!
Sally Pointer is an English archaeologist and award-winning heritage educator committed to keeping techniques from the past in use within modern society. With a working background in the Museum and Heritage industry, she has an MSc in Experimental Archaeology and is currently an Honorary Associate Research Fellow at Exeter University, where she is researching prehistoric textiles. A beekeeper’s guide to straw skep-building, including sections on bee history and mythology, practical skep beekeeping, and making honey and wax products.

James Owen Thomas
9781789942200 | Hardback | 246x189mm | £25 / $35 / CAN $47
An exploration of colourful collages influenced by autism and the natural world by award-winning environmental artist James Owen Thomas. Foreword by Monty Don.
James creates bold, engaging collages and montages from old lottery scratchcards and other used materials. His autism has an influence throughout his creative process, from gathering materials to sorting them by colour, visual theme and texture before hole-punching, tearing or cutting them up for collaging – it even affects the subjects he depicts. These are primarily peaceful, calming woodland settings and animals, but also branch out into architecture, portraiture and the surreal.
This beautifully illustrated examination of his work shows how his art and love for nature have helped him cope with autism from an early age, going on to explain the inspiration behind many of his pieces and the various techniques he uses. An emotive biographical section describes the many challenges of his autism and how he has worked through them – and with them – to become a successful artist and environmental campaigner.
James Owen Thomas was born in Eastbourne in 2001. After being diagnosed with autism aged 4, he used art and nature as a medium of expression. He later developed a particular interest for art highlighting environmental issues such as single use products and, in his practice, encourages and inspires people to recycle and look forward to a more environmentally friendly future.

Louise Lambert
With 10 beautiful step-by-step projects, master the art of needle felting with this practical guide.
Needle felting is an increasingly popular craft because it can be used to create almost anything! This book has everything you need to know to make your very own three-dimensional needle felted sculptures. After learning about the different types of wools, materials and tools needed, discover how to ‘jab’ fibres into basic shapes and build your own armatures from wire. Whilst they make wonderful display pieces, some projects can become wearable as brooches – all of which is explored in the book.
Featuring 10 step-by-step projects to get you started, ranging from toadstools and teacups to puffins and mice, learn how to create your very own sculptures. WoolSculpting is enriching and aspirational as well as being eminently practical. Get your needle out and start sculpting your own miniature works of art!
Louise Lambert’s witty narrative artworks are created using wet and needle felt techniques. She is continuously inspired by wildlife and everyday objects, exploring poetry and literature in the form of illustrative scenes and quirky three-dimensional objects. Louise is a self-taught felt artist, who trained, specialised and gained her degree in Textile Design at the Reigate School of Art and Design, and is currently based in West Sussex. She has embraced needle felting, creating her own studio in her garden – The Felt Hut – through whose windows she can observe the nature that inspires her.

Ruby Taylor
9781789942484 | Hardback | 280x216mm | £25 / $35 / CAN $47
A makers’ guide to sourcing and harvesting foraged plants to make natural cordage and baskets.
Making with our hands is a fundamental human activity; connection with the natural world and the feeling of belonging to place are basic human needs. A counterbalance to our digitalised lives is the wish to connect with the simple joy and satisfaction of creating beautiful and useful objects, tapping into ancestral skills and wisdom and taking care of our world by reducing our ecological impact. Wild Basketry brings all this together in a rich combination of reflection and practical guide.
Beautiful photographs take you through a seasonal year of seven basketry and cordage projects, suitable for beginners as well as for those wishing to expand their basketmaking skills. Ruby Taylor guides you through each step following a range of techniques, with suggestions for further exploration, to give you a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of the craft.
Ruby Taylor is an artist-maker and educator, and connection to the natural world is at the root of her creative practice. She works with materials foraged from woods, hedgerows and the land, and facilitates immersive outdoor courses in basketmaking, pottery and bushcraft in Sussex where she lives. Ruby holds a BA Hons in 3D Craft, post-graduate teacher training in Art & Design, a diploma in the Therapeutic Application of the Arts, and trained in basketry with a number of UK basketmakers. rubytaylor.art / @nativehands.uk

A remarkable collection of artworks that shine a light on the city’s grand edifices, quirky nooks, hidden quarters and modern architecture with equal affection and pride.
From cotton mills – for this city was once the centre of textile manufacture – to classical composers and the successful careers of the Gallagher brothers, this is a city with a rich and diverse history. It’s university, where Ernest Rutherford first split the atom in 1917, and established at the birth of modernity as we know it, features many 19th-century buildings and since 2004 has been the largest single-site university in the UK – hosting both the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.
In their work, over 50 local artists portray the Gothic grandeur of Manchester cathedral, its many and varied railway stations, and the breathtaking architecture of the Royal Exchange Theatre, the city’s former cotton exchange.
This book is a tribute to Manchester, a city famous for its creative and commercial exports, whose extensive canal network and dense urban landscape helped solidify its position as the world’s first industrial city. The ManchesterArt Book offers a new perspective on the city, through the eyes of the local artists it continues to inspire.
Emma Bennett is the editor of the city art book series. She is a collage artist, creating vibrant intricate hand-cut collage pictures using minute details. Her fascination with design and recycling leads to beautiful collages, as in the cover of this lovely book.

Kevin Millward
9781789941944 | Paperback | 246x189mm | £25 / $35 / CAN $47
From extracting clay to exporting your work, this is a practical guide to producing unique ceramic pieces with minimal environmental impact.
Being a green potter is not an easy feat. Historically, a lot more attention is given to the finished pieces coming out of the kiln rather than to the damages made throughout the designing and making processes. However, as we progress into the twenty-first century, and our awareness of our impact on the environment increases, caring for our planet in the studio has never been more important.
In this book, Kevin Millward explores how potters and ceramicists can be more responsible in sourcing and using the planet’s finite resources. With tips for the whole making process such as firing, choosing fuels, extracting clays and raw materials, reclaiming water and glazes, disposing of ceramic materials, packing and shipping, this is a comprehensive guide to producing extraordinary pieces.
By accepting and embracing a green approach in ceramic processes, we are setting out an example for future generations and paving the way for a more creative and respectful industry.
Kevin Millward is an internationally renowned ceramicist who has been potting for over 30 years and has presented seminars, workshops and lectures, as well as trained potters from all over the world. He teaches ceramics at Bucks New University and the University of Westminster and has more recently been series consultant to Channel 4’s TheGreatPotteryThrowDown.

Tess Grace and Holly Jones
9781789943412 | Paperback | 280x216mm | £18.99 / $25 / CAN $34
An immersive guide to the mindful craft of Indian block printing.
Block printing, where carved wooden blocks are used to hand print patterns onto fabric and paper, has been a thriving craft in India since at least the twelfth century.
Today, the industry is dominated by the workshops around Jaipur and the projects in this book are filled with tried-and-tested tips to help you produce vibrant contemporary designs inspired by the city. From simple motifs to intricate designs – and from tablecloths and tote bags to air-dry clay and gift wrapping – this is a comprehensive guide both for beginners and experienced crafters looking to refine their work.
Colourful photographic sections are woven into the text, providing details of the authors’ visits to block carvers, printers and dyers in the Jaipuri villages of Sanganer and Bagru, and how these influences are applied back in their own UK studio.
Tess Grace has a background in craft, has trained extensively with master block printers in Rajasthan and has taught hundreds of crafters to print at the Indian Block Print Co. studio.
Holly Jones started her career training in screen printing, before developing workshops and project books for Annie Sloan. Since 2018, she has run the Indian Block Print Co. studio with Tess, alongside her own fabric design business, Holly B. Designs.
