In the final instalment of the Tyrant Philosophers quintet, Adrian Tchaikovsky takes us back to Ilmar, the “City of Last Chances,” a decade after our story began. It’s almost ten years since the Gownhall Rising, in which time the Palleseen grip on the city has only strengthened. Landmarks like the Mahanic Temple and even the Gownhall itself have been torn down to be replaced by Palleseen edifices. The Grove, gateway to the infinite wood and all the worlds beyond, is scheduled for destruction. Only the haunted Reproach remains too much for even the Pals to extinguish. Istri is a playwright, writing plays contrary to perfection and keeping ahead of both the censors and her creditors. In a bad spot, she is commissioned by Fidel, the “Old Owl” of the resistance, to write her last and greatest work. Innocent enough, except it is to be a play touching on the most forbidden topic, the Reproach itself. Orlandt, soldier of fortune and Istri’s former lover, has been over a decade away from the city since fleeing into the Grove to escape the Pal occupation. Now he’s back, looking for familiar faces. But his past is always with him, what he did in the war, and what was done to him within the Wood. Yasnic the ex-priest, the conjurer, the beloved of Hell, has come home to find his city under threat not just from the Palleseen, but other sini... PRAISE

Blood Gold The Shocking True Story of the Amazon Gold Rush Dan Collyns A shocking exposé of the dirty trade of gold and how it is pushing the world’s biggest rainforest to the brink of collapse. Gold has a powerful hold over our civilization. The precious metal first attracted the Spanish conquistadors to the new world. For the Incas, only royalty could wear gold. Louis XIV covered Versailles from floor to ceiling in gold. It is excess, wealth, domination and power.
H I S TO RY / L AT I N A M E R I C A / SOUTH AMERICA Bloomsbury Continuum | 3/2/2027 9781399414807 | $30.00 / $40.00 Can. Hardcover with dust jacket | 288 pages | Carton Qty: 16 9.2 in H | 6 in W | 1 in T | 1 lb Wt
In this gripping investigation into the murky origins of gold, journalist Dan Collyns explores the world of gold mining in South America. From the Inca palaces stripped of their riches and the craters of illegal mining in the Amazon, to the Indigenous peoples fighting for survival to the firms laundering gold via the Swiss refineries, jewellery makers and bank vaults of the world - Collyns shows how the extraction and sale of ‘blood gold’ in South America grew from a colonial history of plunder and oppression. More urgently, he will show how we can stem its flow. Traveling to the illegal mining operations deep in the Amazon, Collyns reveals the extraordinary levels of toxic mercury which are being spilled into the world's largest biome, the shocking sister trade of the many underage girls trafficked into sex slavery and the corruption the western hunger for gold has unleashed across South America - for criminal mafias, gold is an even bigger business than cocaine. Dan Collyns is based in Peru reporting for The Guardian, the BBC and CGTN America, as well as The New York Review of Books, the Thomson Reuters Foundation, Chatham House and Mongabay, on topics including Amazon oil spills, earthquakes, Inca descendants and the drugs war. He interviewed one of the last Shining Path commanders, joined raids on illegal gold, timber and wildlife in Peru’s Amazon, and was one of a handful of journalists to report on “isolated” tribes.

Target Schweinfurt The Eighth Air Force's Darkest Days Thomas McKelvey Cleaver A vivid account of the US Eighth Air Force’s raid on Schweinfurt in October 1943, their most difficult and costliest mission of World War II. Based on the first-hand accounts of those who survived, renowned aviation historian Tom Cleaver tells the story of the Eighth Air Force’s Mission 115, when 291 bombers were sent to Schweinfurt to destroy the ball bearing factories on which the Wehrmacht depended. H I S TO RY / W A R S & C O N F L I C T S / WORLD WAR II Osprey Publishing | 3/2/2027 9781472878427 | $32.00 / $42.00 Can. Hardcover with dust jacket | 320 pages | Carton Qty: 1 9.2 in H | 6 in W 8 pages of black and white illustrations
In the face of an unrelenting German anti-aircraft defence, the mission became a bitter fight as the bomber crews of the B-17s of the Eighth found themselves under attack from nearly every Luftwaffe fighter unit in Western Europe. Sixty B-17s were lost and 600 men died or became prisoners of war. October 14, known forever after as “Black Thursday,” the day the Luftwaffe won. This dramatic narrative of the mission takes us through the build-up to the mission before focussing on the desperate struggle for the survival in the skies above Germany. The raid was to have profound implications as the Luftwaffe regained air superiority over Germany and the US Air Force conducted no more raids until long-range fighter escorts were available. A new air war had begun. Thomas McKelvey Cleaver has been a published writer for the past 40 years, with his most recent work being the bestselling Osprey titles The Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club (2021), Going Downtown (2022), The Cactus Air Force (2022) alongside the late Eric Hammel, Clean Sweep (2023), Turning The Tide (2024) and most recently Mediterranean Sweep (2025). Tom served in the US Navy in Vietnam and currently lives in Encino, California.

Limelight and Shadow American and Soviet Jet Aces of the Korean War Bill Yenne This fascinating history reveals the Korean War as the birth of modern jet combat, where historic dogfights forged heroes in the limelight of fame and the shadow of secrecy. Limelight and Shadow presents a gripping dual narrative of the Korean War’s jet age, contrasting the celebrated exploits of American fighter aces with the hidden war waged by their Soviet adversaries. It follows figures such as Joseph McConnell, whose victories in the F-86 Sabre made him a public hero in the United States, and Nikolai Sutyagin, the highest-scoring ace of the war, who flew MiG-15s under false markings and vanished into Cold War secrecy. Hardcover with dust jacket | 320 pages | Carton Qty: 1 9.2 in H | 6 in W 8-pages of black-and-white photographs
Drawing on decades of suppressed history, the book reveals how Soviet pilots were the primary opponents of United Nations airmen in “MiG Alley” – a truth long dismissed as rumor, even as American pilots heard Russian voices over the radio and were ordered to remain silent. The Korean War marked the world’s first jet-on-jet air war and produced more such combat than all later conflicts combined, redefining aerial warfare forever. By placing American and Soviet aces side by side, Limelight and Shadow explores how courage, competition, and ideology collided at supersonic speeds, turning elite pilots into instruments of propaganda and pawns in a global struggle that was anything but cold. Some men flew into history’s spotlight; others into its shadows – and only now can their stories be told together. Bill Yenne is the author of more than three dozen non-fiction books, his most recent being America’s Few (2022) and The Ones Who Got Away (2023). His work has been selected for the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Reading List. He is the recipient of the Air Force Association’s Gill Robb Wilson Award for the “most outstanding contribution in the field of arts and letters... whose works have shaped how thousands of Americans understand and appreciate air power.” He lives in California.

Bind Us Together The 2027 Lent Book James Walters The 2027 Lent book reflects on community building as an act of creativity, brought about by God generating and shaping social life. In the secular world, building community is a functional strategy to promote cohesion or wellbeing. Even in today’s Church, it’s often reduced to a strategy for growth. This book argues that the task of building community is always an act of creativity. This is because, whatever function it may serve, building community is a participation in the creativity of God. RELIGION / CHRISTIAN LIVING / D E VOT I O N A L Bloomsbury Continuum | 1/26/2027 9781399430272 | $18.99 / $24.99 Can. Trade Paperback | 160 pages | Carton Qty: 1 7.8 in H | 5.1 in W
This is the life of the Church—not merely to disseminate a message or to grow in numbers for its own sake, but to foster redemptive human community that integrates self, society and nature. Today’s Church is called to that task in the context of forces that push hard in the opposite direction: an atomised consumer society, communities disrupted by mass migration, acrimonious culture wars, and the escalating threat of war. This book offers short theological reflections on core elements of the task of community building as a resource for Christian people in today’s world. It seeks to draw out the essential creativity in traditional Christian community and presents it as more relevant and more urgently needed than it has ever been. Each chapter begins with a micro-ethnography of an existing church project that illustrates the theme, and biblical reflections drawn from the Holy Week stories. The five chapters are designed to be read over the first five weeks of Lent and include questions for group discussion. James Walters is founding director of the LSE Faith Centre and LSE Religion and Global Society. Walters studied theology at Cambridge University and writes on the interface of theology, philosophy and political science. He has published five books including Loving Your Neighbour in an Age of Religious Conflict, Religious Imaginations: How Narratives of Faith are Shaping Today’s World and a theological engagement with the work of the French philosopher Jean Baudrillard.

The skin is a fascinating organ—it’s the largest one we have and the only one visible to others. It has to hold the rest of our organs in, maintain our precise body temperature, keep out toxins and radiation, and manufacture vitamins. We use it to feel the world and each other. SCIENCE Bloomsbury Sigma | 3/2/2027 9781399425537 | $28.00 / $37.00 Can. Hardcover with dust jacket | 272 pages | Carton Qty: 1 9.2 in H | 6 in W
Skin Deep explores why the skin is so important for our health, from why wrinkles form and whether collagen supplements actually work, to how Botox affects not just faces but emotions and what the long term impacts are of tattoos. It asks: can we really stop our skin from aging? Is there such a thing as a healthy tan? And does washing with soap actually make us smell worse? Blending the latest research with expert interviews, Alice Klein meets burn survivors, spends a day in a Botox clinic, talks to dermatologists and tattoo artists, meets scientists working on radical new gene therapies, and visits a lab in Japan making robots with living skin; all to provide a deep understanding of the body's boundary. Alice Klein is a staff journalist at New Scientist, reporting on health and environment news. She has won several awards, including an Association of British Science Writers’ award for Feature of the Year in 2021, two National Press Club of Australia awards. Circus When Tyranny Came to Ancient Rome The untold story of how propaganda and power struggles toppled the Roman Republic – once the world’s most powerful democracy. In 49BC, Caesar crossed the Rubicon and Rome fell into a brutal civil war. The institutions that gave its people a voice crumbled and, after the dust settled, Rome was forevermore ruled by emperors.
Bloomsbury Continuum 9781399432153 | $29.99 Hardcover | 320 pages 9.2 in H | 6 in W
But Rome didn’t fall in a day. For centuries, its people had taken pride in the fact that they had overthrown their King and vowed that they would never have another. So why did the Romans give up their freedom? After the violent assassination of Caesar, why wasn’t the Republic restored? And why did those fighting for democracy lose the battle? This is not just another history of Rome; Jessica Clarke takes us right into the heart of the wars, back-stabbings, uprisings and creeping normalisation of propaganda and disinformation that fractured the Republic. Lifting the veil on the political machinations of a series of ruthlessly ambitious oligarchs, Circus is a page-turning exploration of the spectacular culture and theatrical politics of the final battle for the Roman Republic. Jessica Clarke is a historian and archaeologist with a PhD from the University of Oxford. She is a regular contributor to The Classics Podcast and the BBC HistoryExtra Podcast, and has written for several publications, including The Times Literary Supplement, BBC History Magazine, History Today and La Repubblica.

Barrett Tillman’s Execute, Repeat, Execute: The Mining of Haiphong and the End of the Vietnam War delivers a long-overdue, deeply researched account of one of the most strategically impactful – yet largely overlooked – operations of the entire conflict. With the precision of a seasoned historian and the flair of a novelist, Tillman revisits Operation Pocket Money: the 1972 U.S. naval mining of Haiphong Harbor, a bold maneuver that sealed North Vietnam’s key maritime lifeline and helped force Hanoi back to the negotiating table. Uniquely, Tillman incorporates both American and North Vietnamese sources, including translated official Hanoi documents and first-hand Vietnamese accounts – many appearing in English for the first time. Emmanuel Cooper (1938–2012) was a leading force in British studio pottery: founder of Ceramic Review, author of A History of World Pottery, and biographer of Bernard Leach and Lucie Rie. Renowned for his sought-after conical bowls and jugs, he helped define the development of an electric-kiln aesthetic and transformed what oxidation firing could achieve. His work appears in major museums worldwide, and his bold, colourful surfaces continue to inspire ceramicists today. Cooper pushed glaze chemistry far beyond the Leach tradition, creating crater and lava glazes, oxide-rich slips and vivid surfaces inspired by London’s colours and mineral forms. From turquoise and shocking pink to molten gold, his glazes were as bold as their maker. For the first time, glaze expert and author Linda Bloomfield, who learned from Cooper’s books, attended his talks and was later invited by David Horbury to catalogue his archive, opens Cooper’s personal glaze notebooks. She reveals hundreds of unpublished recipes and the techniques behind his signature effects. This book is an essential resource for potters, ceramic artists, and anyone fascinated by colour, chemistry, and the expressive potential of electric-kiln glaze. Linda Bloomfield trained as a materials scientist before becoming a potter. Since 2003, she has made porcelain in her West London studio, selling through Liberty, Harrods and Michelin-starred restaurants. A regular Ceramic Review contributor, she has authored best-selling glaze books such as Handbook of Glaze Recipes, Colour in Glazes and Special Effect Glazes. Drawing on scientific expertise and decades of practice, she offers unique insight into Emmanuel Cooper’s glaze techniques and archive.

The undisputed maestro of literary adaptation finally turns his razor-sharp pen on the most challenging subject of all: himself. Andrew Davies has written his way into British cultural history, from Pride and Prejudice to House of Cards, Bleak House to Bridget Jones. But his own life story is every bit as compelling and chaotic as the characters he’s brought to life. An Unsuitable Boy is a memoir that weaves together wit, irreverence and vulnerability to reflect on a life of writing, loving, adapting, collaborating and surviving. With scenes that stretch from post-war Cardiff to the BBC boardroom, from Broadway flops to French farmhouses with Robert Altman, this is a story about what happens behind the scripts. Drawing upon personal correspondence, diaries and unpublished archive material, Andrew writes candidly about marriage and mischief, writer’s block and Broadway, literary obsession and love. Along the way, with his trademark wit and warmth, he reflects on his complicated bond with his mother, the enduring memory of his wife Diana and their long, happy marriage, the affairs on both sides that complicated it, and the family dynamics that continue to shape his storytelling. Contains: Photographs and ephemera, personal poetry, annotated scripts, behindthe-scenes snapshots, self-portraits and quirky items from decades of production and adaptation. PRAISE

A master of many literary genres, Arthur Conan Doyle excelled particularly in the short-story form, and was acclaimed in his day as much for his detective stories as for his thrilling tales of mystery and the uncanny. While the adventures of Sherlock Holmes have become part of our collective imagination, these stories – concerned with ghosts and other horrific creatures, obscure scientific experiments and unexplained phenomena – are now unjustly neglected. Presented in a fully annotated edition – the only currently available to English readers – this collection of Conan Doyle’s complete tales of horror and the supernatural will offer the opportunity to discover a lesser-known side of this master storyteller’s ability to surprise and enthrall. Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) is the celebrated author of many adventure novels, including The Lost World and The Poison Belt, and the creator of the hugely popular detective stories of Sherlock Holmes.

Bedridden and wracked with pain, the German poet Heinrich Heine was visited one day by an attractive young German woman, Elise Krinitz, who had come to Paris to give the poet a few sheets of music from an admirer of his poetry. Heine called her “Mouche,” because she wore a seal that was embellished with a fly. She visited him almost daily, read aloud to him, translated some of his poems into French and acted as his amanuensis. Mathilde, Heine’s wife, tolerated the relationship but avoided all contact with her. Mouche brightened his final days, inspired the most moving love poems he ever penned, and wrote down some of his late verse to Heine’s own dictation. Offering a personal, poignant, more intimate look at the final seven months of Heine’s life in Paris, Mouche which will surprise and enchant in equal measure all the admirers of the great German lyric poet and all music lovers. Camille Selden was the nom de plume of Elise Krinitz (1829–96), a German-born novelist, biographer, translator and literary critic who spent most of her life in France. She is best remembered for her role as secretary and companion to the German poet Heinrich Heine during the last seven months of his life, an experience she recounted in The Final Days of Heinrich Heine (1884).

Heart-broken, widowed, and penniless, Katherine Hudson never wished to become a lady’s maid to the eccentric Violet Holmes, mother of a precocious seven-year-old Sherlock. To keep her beloved family out of the poorhouse, Hudson trades her telegraphic career for a job in service, just like the one that cost her father his life. She quickly discovers, though, that working for the recently widowed Lady Holmes demands far more than learning the latest hairstyles. Instead, she engages in a most scandalous and unladylike activity: investigations. With a talent for spotting lies and a heart as big as her mouth, Hudson despises everything Lady Holmes stands for, but a village boy is missing and the clock’s ticking. And when someone forges the signature of Hudson’s deceased husband and a body shows up on the Holmes estate, the police try to pin it all on her. At first, weapons were mounted on light trucks and then, more effectively, on the chassis of light, medium or heavy half-tracks. German military planners then issued orders for a dedicated armoured Flakpanzer to be produced—the 2cm Flakpanzer 38(t) which utilized the chassis of a Czech-built PzKpfw 38(t). The effectiveness of this type saw the development of four further vehicles on the PzKpfw IV chassis: FlakPz IV Wirbelwind (whirlwind), 3.7cm FlaK 43 L/50 Ostwind (east wind): 3.7cm FlaK 43 L/60 Möbelwagen (furniture van) and the 2cm Vierlingsflak 38 L/55. The final stages of the war also German field engineers mounting Flak weapons on all types of heavy truck or half-track chassis available. Renowned armour expert Thomas Anderson draws on first-hand accounts and rare and previously unseen photographs in this comprehensive and fully illustrated study of the German development of Flakpanzers throughout World War II. Thomas Anderson is a specialist on German armoured fighting vehicles of World War II. He regularly contributes to popular modelling and historical magazines, including Military Modelcraft International (UK), Steel Art (Italy), Historia Militar (Spain) and Batailles & Blindes (France). Heading for Trouble Football’s Head Impact Crisis — And How We Save the Game Kevin Moore Headers are thrilling. But football, like many sports, is facing a concussion crisis. Is heading worth it? Is the game ready to face its greatest scandal? Heading the ball is considered as much a part of football as passing, tackling and shooting. Pelé, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robin Van Persie—all have executed memorable headers. But the impact can cause lasting damage. Heading for Trouble is an essential exposé on this dynamic yet increasingly controversial skill. The human brain is a jelly, floating in a protective fluid, and there is clear scientific evidence that even minor impacts, such as heading, can lead to a neurodegenerative brain disease. Through new research and exclusive interviews with former players and neurological experts, Dr Kevin Moore, consultant researcher and founding director of the National Football Museum, explores the fascinating history of heading in football and the dangerous, frequently tragic consequences it can cause. He highlights the football establishment’s inaction and exposes what may be the game’s greatest ever scandal. Heading for Trouble brilliantly brings this urgent issue into sharp focus and explores how football and heading can move forward without such tragic cost to its players. Dr Kevin Moore is the founding director of the National Football Museum and now serves in a research capacity at the Museum. He is on the editorial board of the world-leading academic journal for football, Soccer and Society, and holds key roles at the International Football Institute, the Chinese Football Museum and Indian Sports Museum.

With the help of top players, legendary managers and celebrity supporters, he dissects what it is that makes a real fan. He discusses the instinct to support a club, how we pick our team—family tradition, local club, glory hunting or “I live in Surrey so it just had to be Man U”—and, heart-searchingly, whether we saddle our children with the hopes, despair and occasional exhilaration that has marked our own lives. Kevin does not shy away from the serious issues either. He raises what fans can do about the brazen exploitation by the clubs they love, the spectre of hooliganism, and the racism, sexism and homophobia which are still all-too evident in the stands and terraces. Being a football fan isn’t easy. Like any religion, it has its cherished, long-established customs, outdated practices and troublesome elements. The Football Fan’s Handbook is your guide through this minefield: an in-depth, analytical if sketchily-drawn road map to becoming a “real” fan. Kevin Day is an acclaimed stand-up comedian and one of the country’s leading comedy writers. He writes for Have I Got News for You and A League of Their Own, regularly appears on TalkSport and BBC 5 Live, and is known to football fans for his supporter-focused reporting on Match of the Day 2. The Long Range Desert Group Italy, Greece and the Balkans, 1944–1945 Anthony Rogers The overlooked account of the exploits of the Long Range Desert Group in the last 18 month of World War II.

The Long Range Desert Group is most famous for the secretive but vital role it played in the North African campaign in World War II. However, it also saw significant service elsewhere. After taking part in a series of disastrous British operations in the Aegean during September to November 1943, the LRDG, significantly smaller in size, survived, and in 1944 deployed in the picturesque countryside of Tuscany, bordering the north-west coast of Italy. There, they were joined by local Partisans, whose enthusiasm for taking the fight to the enemy was, at times, questionable. Before long, the group was in the Balkans, fighting alongside Albanian and Yugoslav Partisans, a very different breed to their Italian counterparts. Tony Rogers has followed in the footsteps of the LRDG, visiting the battlegrounds of Levitha and Leros in the Aegean; working in Libya, not far from Marada and Zella in the 1980s; venturing to regions throughout what is now Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovia as a freelance photojournalist during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia; as well as living on the Adriatic island of Vis and travelling to Tuscany and elsewhere in Italy. He has experienced at first hand the rugged and wild region with a long history of war and conflict that was the setting for a large part of what follows in this, the first account of the LRDG during the last 18 months of World War II. Anthony Rogers has enjoyed a varied career. After serving in the Royal Marines, he was a freelance photojournalist, covering conflicts across three continents. Latterly, he worked as a security contractor in Iraq, Afghanistan and West Africa. He has written two books about mercenaries and other aspects of unorthodox soldiering. As a keen military historian, he has also written several books detailing events in and around the Mediterranean during World War II.

In 1940, the Regia Marina was the fourth-largest navy in the world, equipped with a significant battle fleet and one of the largest submarine forces in the world. In the war that followed, Italy would be a major naval player in the Mediterranean and beyond. Yet until now, few books have attempted a comprehensive study of the Italian Navy of World War II, and many of those have relied on limited or biased sources. In this book, Dr Enrico Cernuschi, one of Italy’s preeminent naval historians, presents a definitive, superbly illustrated, wide-ranging, and myth-busting history of Italian seapower from Mussolini’s ascent until the peace of 1945, drawing upon Italian, British, German, French, and American primary archive sources, as well as on high-level sources unique to Dr Cernuschi’s collection. It offers a masterful account of warships, strategy, commanders and battles, as well as being packed with historical revelations, definitive new technical information, and little-known episodes of naval history. Illustrated with hundreds of rare and previously unpublished photos, bringing to life all aspects of Italian warships, naval life and action, this is the essential guide to Italy’s great fleet of World War II. Enrico Cernuschi is a naval historian based at Pavia, Italy. He has written dozens of books and monographs and more than 500 articles in Italian, English, and French. He has contributed to USNI books and has published extensively with Italy’s professional naval organizations. His major works include “Ultra” La fine di un mito (2014) and Sea Power the Italian Way (2016). He is a regular contributor to Warship.

The Last Catfight charts the combat experiences of the US Tomcat crews that took the jet into action during Operation Iraqi Freedom, flying hundreds of missions all over strife-torn Iraq to try to ensure the safety of Coalition troops on the ground. The F-14 units played a key part in protecting the polling stations during two vital government elections held in 2005, and were also in the vanguard of Operation Steel Curtain, when the US Marine Corps went head-to-head with al-Qaeda near the Syria/Iraq border. Combat accounts from the men and women flying these missions bring the F-14’s exploits to life as Grumman’s last fighter is put through its paces in the world’s most demanding combat environment. Whether conducting convoy patrols, looking for IEDs, chasing insurgents through the streets of Baghdad, destroying bomb-making factories or strafing and bombing enemy strongholds, the Tomcat was never found wanting thanks to the professionalism of the crews and the new technologies debuted by the iconic naval fighter on its very last cruise. Aviation author and editor Tony Holmes has interviewed the commanding officers, pilots and radar intercept officers, and their first-hand accounts are featured alongside a stunning array of colour photos. Tony Holmes became the company’s aviation editor in 1989 after he moved to England from Western Australia. Responsible for devising the Aircraft of the Aces, Combat Aircraft, Aviation Elite Units, Duel and X-Planes series, Tony has also written more than 30 books over the past 35 years. Drawing on history, neurology, psychology and culture, social scientist Matilda Gosling shows how our brains and bodies absorb the emotional currents around us. Distress finds new forms of expression in each era: shell shock in the First World War, the recovered memory epidemic of the 1980s, and our modern contagions of identity, pain and fatigue. Passing through medieval towns, Victorian sanitoriums, modern therapy rooms and the labyrinthine connections of social media, Gosling examines the pull of fear, suggestion and belonging through a vivid cast of spies, witches, influencers and quack practitioners. THE INFECTIOUS MIND reveals why symptoms spread, why some become epidemics, and how we can protect ourselves in an age of mass connectedness. Set Europe Ablaze The SOE Agents Who Fought Behind Enemy Lines Graham Hoyland A gripping look at how SOE agents of World War II trained for their work in occupied territories, the tools they used, and the paths they took to ensure victory.
H I S TO RY / W A R S & C O N F L I C T S / WORLD WAR II Osprey Publishing | 4/6/2027 9781472870421 | $30.00 / $40.00 Can. Hardcover with dust jacket | 272 pages | Carton Qty: 1 9.2 in H | 6 in W 1x8 page plate section
At the start of World War II, Winston Churchill commanded the Special Operations Executive to ‘set Europe ablaze.’ To do this, extraordinarily brave men and women were selected, trained and parachuted into occupied countries by moonlight. Once there, they caused mayhem by inciting unrest in the population, sabotaging enemy infrastructure, organizing resistance and backing anti-establishment organizations. While their training provided a strong foundation, most of these men and women were forced to think on their feet and improvise to stay ahead of the enemy. One agent orchestrated the kidnapping of a German general in Crete. Another, surrounded by the Gestapo, barricaded herself in a house with a gun and a load of ammunition to take down as many as she could. These dangers were part of what it meant to be an SOE agent. Armed with the top-secret Special Operations Manual and an ex-SAS soldier, historian and explorer Graham Hoyland retraces the steps of some of these agents. Using the present to contextualize the past, this book brings the memories and actions of these heroic agents to the forefront. This book covers how they were taught to forge documents, prepare cover stories, destroy railway lines and live off the land. With a boots-on-the-ground approach, Hoyland travels to some of the places these agents lived, fought and died in to bring their story to life and honour their incredible bravery. Graham Hoyland is an author, explorer, TV producer and public speaker. He was the 15th Briton to climb Mount Everest and published his first book about finding Mallory, Last Hours on Everest, in 2013. He has also published several other titles, including Yeti: An Abominable History, Walking through Spring: An English Journey, Merlin: The Power Behind the Spitfire, Mosquito and Lancaster, and Jet: The Engine that Changed the World.

Be More Bored The Hidden Power of Doing Nothing Joel Snape How we’ve lost our ability to be bored—and why bringing back, and even embracing boredom, can improve all of our lives. Being bored is not just useful but essential: a catalyst for creativity, productivity and even altruism. Staring out of the window or aimlessly dawdling, it reveals, is not a waste of time, but valuable time out in this always-on, hyper-connected world. SELF-HELP / PERSONAL GROWTH / HAPPINESS Green Tree | 4/13/2027 9781399433174 | $28.00 / $37.00 Can. Hardcover with dust jacket | 240 pages | Carton Qty: 1 9.2 in H | 6 in W
Written by journalist Josh Snape, this insightful and accessible analysis urges readers to slow down, switch off and zone out. Snape explores the potential of the brain’s ‘default mode network,’ which becomes active when the mind is at rest, and provides practical examples and first-hand anecdotes. He speaks to psychotherapist Phillipa Perry, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, Bookerwinning novelist Anne Enright and other creatives, who reveal how this unconscious processing of ideas is an indispensable mental tool. Embracing boredom is not just accepting boredom when it happens, but actively seeking it out. Snape ruminates on mindfulness and meditation, jumps into floatation tanks and meets up with Tibetan monks. He also encourages intentional boredom—setting aside time where you are offline, disengaged and simply unable to do anything other than ponder, muse and daydream. Be More Bored is a game-changer: a manifesto for doing not more but less; a call-out for inaction. Joel Snape is a writer and editor who regularly contributes to the Guardian, Observer and BBC Science Focus, previously worked as editor of Men’s Fitness magazine, and runs a successful YouTube channel focused on self-improvement. He has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and plays the piano (not well, but he’s working on it). @joelsnape

The “serenity prayer” is a Stoic statement. The Beatles’ “Let it Be” is a Stoic song. Tom Hodgkinson, author of bestselling How to Be Idle, goes back to the original philosophical texts and looks at the greatest Stoics in history – including Seneca, Cicero, Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius and St Augustine – to see if they can help us find fulfilment. It’s the indispensable companion for anyone passionate about preserving the character and seaworthiness of their wooden boat. Spitfire V vs Fw 190 Northwest Europe 1941–42 Andy Saunders An illustrated account of the challenge posed to RAF Fighter Command by the Luftwaffe’s Fw 190, and the ways in which Spitfire crews adapted to this deadly new threat.

The introduction of Focke-Wulf’s Fw 190 to Luftwaffe service presented RAF Spitfire VB and VA pilots with a formidable new foe that could quite literally run rings around them. First encountered over France in September 1941, the Fw 190—or ‘Butcher Bird’—soon demonstrated its startling capabilities, wrongfooting RAF Fighter Command and forcing the swift development of new tactics and methods. The actions that ensued were some of the most fiercely contested of the air war in northwest Europe and would lead to the production and eventual fielding of the Spitfire IX. In this new study, air war expert Andy Saunders details how the RAF – having perhaps become complacent about the superiority of the Spitfire – found itself left behind with an inferior fighter. Covering the introduction to service of both the Spitfire V and the Fw 190, the fighters’ first encounters and the battles that shaped subsequent tactics and design, it combines combat reports and first-hand accounts with archive photographs and newly commissioned artwork and formation diagrams to convey what it was like to be a fighter pilot in both aircraft from 1941 to 1943. Andy Saunders is a well-known aviation historian. He founded Tangmere Military Aviation Museum and has written numerous books, including several for Osprey. He is a former editor of Britain at War magazine and the German military history magazine Iron Cross. He also contributes to TV documentaries and acts as a TV and film consultant. Gareth Hector produced the cover and battlescene artworks for this book. Jim Laurier created the cockpit and armament views for this book.

US Navy Pacific Fleet 1942–43 Guadalcanal to the Solomons Mark Stille The savage naval battles of Guadalcanal, New Guinea and the Solomons were transformative for the US Navy. Fully illustrated, this analyses the fleet’s capabilities and combat in this period.

The naval battles of 1942–43 around Guadalcanal and in the Solomons were some of the fiercest and most closely contested of the Pacific War. The campaigns included most of the surface actions of the war, as well as two carrier battles, three major amphibious landings, and a submarine offensive. Fighting by day and night against the superbly trained Japanese, they tested the Pacific Fleet’s warfighting capabilities to the utmost. In this book, renowned US Navy historian Mark Stille presents a distilled guide to the detail of the Pacific Fleet of 1942–43, the period that saw its biggest transformation in terms of equipment, doctrine, and capability. America’s huge naval construction effort began to feed through to the front line, while the fleet made advances in its previously deficient surface, air, and submarine warfare doctrine and tactics. The Pacific Fleet also learned how to support large forces far from established bases. Packed with superb original artwork, 3D diagrams, maps and archive photographs, this book explores the warships, weaponry, organization, intelligence, logistics and battles of the Pacific Fleet, as it fought to gain the upper hand in the South Pacific. Mark Stille is the author of numerous Osprey titles focusing on naval history in the Pacific. He recently concluded a nearly 40-year career in the intelligence community, including tours on the faculty of the Naval War College, on the Joint Staff and on US Navy ships. He received his BA in History from the University of Maryland and also holds an MA from the Naval War College.

Against the background of the Armenian–Azerbaijan war, the Russian Revolution, the Ottoman invasion of Armenia and World War I, Baku suddenly found itself the at the centre of a geopolitical minefield. After signing a treaty with Germany, Russia's withdrawal from the war left Germany and Turkey with access to the oilfields at Baku. Extremely critical to keeping the war machine moving, oil was a precious commodity. Worried about Germany and the Ottomans having access to the oilfields, Britain assembled a multinational force under Major General Dunsterville to prevent this. The force set off to Baku with the aim of training and raising the local Armenian population to stop the Turks from seizing the oilfields. Weakening relationships between Germany and Turkey saw both countries trying to keep the other out, while also fighting off the British forces, the Bolsheviks, and the White Russians. The rise of Bolshevism in the area, supported by the Jangalis, was a concern to Britain as well, who worried it might spread towards their interests in central Asia and India. With stunning artwork, detailed maps and period images, this book dives into the highly political campaign to secure oil in Baku in 1918 and explores the long-reaching consequences of involvement in that area. Louise Provan has an MA in Military History and has been studying the Dunsterforce for several years.

Dakar 1940 Operation Menace and the Allied Disaster in West Africa Ryan K. Noppen A detailed analysis of the Allied failure in Dakar against Vichy France in September 1940.

With continuing bombing from the Germans, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was desperate to take the fight to the enemy. He set his eyes on the French West African port of Dakar. Emboldened by the recent defection of the Vichy colonies of French Cameroun and French Equatorial Africa to the Free French movement, Churchill asked Charles de Gaulle if he could rally Dakar and its naval forces to their cause. It was readily agreed and British and French troops were sent to Dakar to bring it back into the Allied sphere. Thus, Operation Menace began on 23 September 1940. However, the campaign unfolded almost completely opposite of what Churchill and de Gaulle expected. The Vichy troops were a determined and effective resistance – and the damaged Allied vessels were withdrawn after three days, without landing a single troop on Dakar's shores. Historian Ryan Noppen analyses the trying circumstances from which Operation Menace was born, including how the impulsive and overly optimistic attitudes of Churchill and de Gaulle overlooked clear warning signs, and examines how this failure would help prepare the Allies for success later in the war. This book explores the naval and air battles around Dakar as well as Vichy France's retaliatory attacks on Gibraltar in the wake of Operation Menace. Ryan K. Noppen is a professional author and historian, possessing a Master of Arts degree in European History from Purdue University. A scholar of German, Dutch, and Central European military history, as well as transportation and travel cultures, he has written 12 books and several articles for Bloomsbury Publishing, Osprey Publishing, and other publishers since 2007.

The Kuban 1943 The bloody struggle over the Caucasus William E. Hiestand The battle in the skies over the Kuban was the first time the Soviets could meet and match the Luftwaffe in a direct battle. Fully illustrated, this is the first study of the campaign.

In April and May 1943, the Luftwaffe and Soviet Air Force (VVS) engaged in an intense battle for air superiority over the Kuban Peninsula. Both sides launched maximum efforts to support offensives by their ground forces as the Germans battled to destroy the small beachhead held by the Red Army, while the Soviets tried to drive them into the Kerch Straits. It was the focus of the Eastern Front air war in spring 1943. Soviet military historian William E. Hiestand explores how this huge air campaign saw the balance of power shift away from the Luftwaffe. Thousands of aircraft fought to support the ground forces and to battle for air superiority. Although the Luftwaffe exacted heavy losses, the Soviets’ capabilities were vastly improved, and by the end of the struggle the VVS had for the first time had seized air superiority from its foes through offensive action. The Kuban also proved to be a “school” for refining new offensive techniques, which would serve the Soviets well in the upcoming battle of Kursk, and through to victory. Illustrated throughout with rare photos, original artwork, 3D diagrams and maps, this is the first book to study the air campaign over the Kuban, the little-known turning point of the Eastern Front air war. William E. Hiestand has worked for over 30 years as a US Department of Defense analyst, focusing on military issues and serving in a wide variety of analytic, leadership and representational roles. He holds an MA in History from Cornell University, and has a lifelong interest in military history with a particular focus on 20th-century armoured and mechanized operations and Soviet military history. Tanks in Southern France 1944 Operation Dragoon to the German border Steven J. Zaloga Two months after D-Day, the Allies began the liberation of southern France. Fully illustrated, this explores the Allies' unique US/Free French tank force, and the Panzers they faced.

Much less known than the Normandy landings and the campaign in northern France, the second part of Operation Overlord began on August 15, 1944 with the Operation Dragoon landings in southern France. It involved a substantial Allied tank force that took part in the amphibious landings and the subsequent campaign via the Rhone valley to the German frontier in the summer and autumn of 1944. In this book, world-leading armour expert Steven Zaloga examines the unique Allied tank force that fought this campaign, and the single Panzer division that the Germans could field against them. The Allied force consisted of two main elements: US army tank battalions and tank destroyer battalions of the Seventh US Army, and French tank divisions of the 1st French Army. The US Army units were battle-hardened veterans of the campaigns in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. The French tank units were raised with US aid and training in North Africa in 1943 and saw their combat debut during Operation Dragoon. With rarely seen photos and meticulously detailed original illustrations, this book provides a fresh look at this largely-ignored subject. It also details the particularly colorful markings of the tank units involved in these campaigns. Steven J. Zaloga received his BA in History from Union College and his MA from Columbia University. He has worked as an analyst in the aerospace industry for three decades, covering missile systems and the international arms trade, and has served with the Institute for Defense Analyses, a federal think tank. He is the author of numerous books on military technology and history. Felipe Rodríguez is a renowned digital illustrator who specializes in tank reconstructions.

How to Grow Perennial Vegetables Second edition Martin Crawford An updated guide to growing perennial vegetables to harvest fresh food throughout the year and improve soil quality.

Perennial vegetables are a joy to grow. Whereas traditional vegetable plots are largely made up of short-lived, annual vegetable plants, perennials are edible plants that live longer than three years. Grown as permaculture plants, they take up less of your time and effort than annual vegetables, and extend the harvesting season - avoiding the hungry gap between the end of the winter harvest and the start of the summer harvest of annual vegetables. Unlike annual vegetables, perennials cover and protect the soil all year round, which maintains the structure of the soil and helps everything growing in it. Humous levels build up, nutrients don’t wash out of the soil, and mycorrhizal fungi, critical for storing carbon within the soil, are preserved. Perennial plants also contain higher levels of mineral nutrients than annuals because they have larger, permanent root systems, capable of using space more efficiently. Written by gardening expert Martin Crawford, this updated edition gives comprehensive advice on how to grow and care for both common perennial vegetables like rhubarb, Jerusalem artichokes, horseradish and asparagus and unusual edible plants such as skirret, red chicory, nodding onions, Babington's leek, scorzonera, sea kale, wild rocket, coppiced trees and aquatic plants. With plenty of cooking tips, colour photographs and illustrations throughout and an A-Z of over 100 perennial edibles, it is an inspiration for all garden... Martin Crawford has had broad and varied horticultural/agricultural experience over the years— experience that led him to the concept of forest gardening as a sustainable system that can flourish in our changing climate conditions. At his forest garden in Dartington, Devon, Martin systematically researches plant interactions and unusual crops. He also runs a commercial tree nursery specialising in unusual trees and shrubs, and has a large trial site, researching fruit and nut trees.

From the swimming pools of Los Angeles to the hills of Yorkshire, from the bright light of California to the changing skies of Normandy, David Hockney spent a lifetime seeing the world differently. One of the most celebrated and influential artists of our age, Hockney continually reinvented both his art and himself. Royal Navy Coastal Forces 1939–42 Fast craft in the Channel and North Sea Angus Konstam In World War II, the Royal Navy fought a dashing, dangerous war to defend the last miles of British waters. Fully illustrated, this studies Coastal Forces in the toughest years of the war.
H I S TO RY / M I L I TA RY / N AVA L Osprey Publishing | 2/16/2027 9781472872777 | $23.00 / $31.00 Can. Trade Paperback | 80 pages | Carton Qty: 24 9.8 in H | 7.2 in W | 1 in T | 1 lb Wt Illustrated throughout with 40 archive photos and 15 pages of original colour illustrations
At the start of the war, the Royal Navy possessed a handful of small, fast, experimental motor torpedo boats (MTBs). There was no command structure, and no plans for their use. But with the fall of France in 1940, the Kriegsmarine’s experienced force of fast, light coastal craft could now be deployed just across the English Channel. A counter was needed. In this book, naval historian Angus Konstam traces the rapid development of Coastal Forces in home waters. By late 1942 it had expanded to a force of almost 10,000 officers and men and some 300 vessels, including destroyers and fast motor gunboats. Initially their main role was the defence of British coastal convoys, but during 1941 they increasingly went on the offensive across the North Sea and English Channel. Then in February 1942, MTBs attacked Scharnhorst and Gneisenau during their ‘Channel Dash’–a suicidal venture that achieved little apart from capturing the public imagination. The following month Coastal Forces’ participation in the Saint-Nazaire raid was much more successful, but equally high-risk. Packed with illustrations, this tells the dramatic story of the creation of Coastal Forces, and outlines its development, expansion, and action during the early years of the war. Angus Konstam is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and has written widely on naval history, with well over a hundred books in print. He is a former Royal Navy officer, maritime archaeologist and museum curator, who has worked in the Royal Armouries, Tower of London, and Mel Fisher Maritime Museum. Now a full-time author and historian, he lives in Orkney.

Desert Rat vs Afrikakorps Soldier Operation Crusader 1941 David Greentree Fully illustrated, this study assesses the importance of British and German infantry formations to the armies fighting in Operation Crusader during late 1941.

During the Desert War (1940–43), both sides viewed armour as the decisive arm because the North African terrain did not hinder its manoeuvrability. Having defeated the Italians in 1940, the British believed their infantry did not need to co-operate with tanks, enemy tanks did not need to be targeted offensively by anti-tank guns, and tanks and artillery could be dispersed. When Rommel’s Deutsches Afrikakorps arrived, however, the British were rudely awakened. If infantry units lost armour support, they risked suffering crippling losses from enemy tanks. The British tended to keep their tank units close to infantry to counter German armour, meaning they were not available to the same extent as German armour to exploit battlefield successes. In this book, David Greentree investigates the effectiveness of the two sides’ motorized infantry during Operation Crusader, the Allied bid to relieve the besieged port of Tobruk in late 1941. He concentrates on three moments in the fighting: the British attack on 21 November; the German counter-attack on 22 November; and the struggle for Belhamed on 1–2 December. Featuring specially commissioned artwork and mapping and carefully chosen archive photographs, this is the absorbing story of the two sides’ infantry at war in late 1941. David Greentree graduated from the University of York with a BA in History before completing an MA in War Studies at King’s College London. In 1995 he accepted a commission in the Royal Air Force and has served in a variety of locations, including Afghanistan and Oman. Steve Noon has had a life-long passion for illustration, and since 1985 has worked as a professional artist, illustrating over 75 books for Osprey.

Machine-Gun Tactics on the Western Front 1914–18 Greg O'Reilly This fully illustrated study explores and depicts the machine-gun tactics employed by both sides on the Western Front in 1914–18.

During World War I, machine guns made an enormous combat contribution in the hands of both Entente and Central Powers forces, not only during the trench warfare of 1914–17 but also in the more mobile climactic battles of 1918. While light machine guns and ‘automatic rifles’ were widely issued to infantry at platoon level, this book focuses on the rapidly evolving tactics employed by the specialist units equipped with weapons such as the British and Commonwealth Vickers, the German MG 08 and the French Hotchkiss Mle 1914. In this volume, Greg O’Reilly presents a novel analysis of the machine gun as a decisive battlefield weapon in World War I. While all of the belligerents grasped the value of the machine gun as a short-range defensive weapon, this study reveals how innovators on both sides came to understand how to use massed machine-gun fire as a formidable long-range area weapon, making expert use of the terrain. This hard-won expertise was far from being evenly shared across the various armies and was often underappreciated at the time despite its battlewinning potential. Specially commissioned artwork and carefully chosen archive and present-day photographs depicts the weapons involved and the innovative machine-gun tactics used on the Western Front battlefields. Greg O’Reilly, a former mining executive who has spent the past 20 years researching his grandfather’s World War I military service, has published several peer-reviewed articles on aspects of machine-gun tactics in 1914–18. He lives in Australia. Johnny Shumate works as a freelance illustrator living in Nashville, Tennessee. His greatest influences are Angus McBride, Don Troiani and Édouard Detaille.

The Mach 2-capable English Electric Lightning is perhaps the most iconic RAF aeroplane of the Cold War. Boasting a massive increase in performance and improved radar and weapons systems over its predecessors, the Lightning brought new capabilities to the RAF’s air defences. Tactics were adapted to fit the aircraft, including incorporating air-to-air refuelling as a routine part of operations because of the Lightning’s notoriously short range. Retired fighter pilot Mike Napier draws on first-hand accounts from RAF aviators to tell the story of Britain’s ultimate Cold War jet fighter. Covering everything from the Lightning’s exercises with other NATO air forces to its interception of Soviet long-range ‘Badger’ and ‘Bear’ bombers in the late 1960s, this volume complements the aircraft’s colourful operational history with 20 profile artworks and photography from both official and personal archives. Michael Napier is the author of many books on aspects of aviation and military history, including the Royal Air Force: A Centenary of Operations and four titles in the Osprey Combat Aircraft series. Michael spent nearly ten years flying the Tornado GR 1 from RAF Bruggen in the late 1980s and early 1990s, after which he was an airline pilot for twenty-one years before retiring in 2018 to concentrate on writing. Ancient Jewish Armies 1200–586 BC Raffaele D’Amato, Giorgio Albertini This fully illustrated study describes and illustrates the Jewish armies of the Near East and their evolving organization and tactics over more than six tumultuous centuries.

From the first formations of nomadic shepherd warriors employed as mercenaries by the Egyptians and other major civilizations of the Near East, the Jewish people evolved into a nation, Israel, which became the central nucleus of the history of the Fertile Crescent. In this fully illustrated study, the authors chart the evolution of Jewish military organization and customs during the conquest of Canaan and the Jewish people’s conflicts with other neighbouring tribes and settlers, notably the Philistines, as the Jewish tribes gathered under the command of a monarch, Saul. The definitive Jewish victories over the Philistines were led by David, conqueror of the capital city of Jerusalem. David’s son Solomon reorganized the army, which became permanent with specialized troop types such as war chariots, as Israel’s military customs and armaments drew upon Egyptian, Hittite, Assyrian and Babylonian practice. The authors explain how after Solomon’s death, the kingdom split in two, with Judah in the south and Israel in the north. Israel fell under Assyrian domination in 721 BC, while Judah survived until the war with the Neo-Babylonian Empire of Nebuchadnezzar, who conquered Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple in 586 BC. Raffaele D’Amato, PhD, the author of some 40 books, has taught at the University of Ferrara, and was a visiting professor at Fatih University, Istanbul. He currently works as an archaeological consultant and lawyer, and also as an external researcher for the University of Ferrara. Giorgio Albertini is a highly experienced illustrator in a range of subjects, with a long-standing interest in the armies of the ancient world.

Seamus O'Mahony casts his sceptical and acerbic eye over this landscape in his brilliant quest to uncover the truth behind an industry – largely funded by Silicon Valley billionaires – which feeds off the gullibility of rich investors and deathphobic consumers. The antidotes: expensive drugs, stem cell therapy, gene therapy and intermittent fasting. He draws upon real scientific evidence to cut through the nonsense and to make a serious case for why longevity is a delusion, and why this industry is unlikely to find a real solution to the inevitability of ageing. This narrative takes O’Mahony’s investigation deep into the world of longevity ‘experts’ as he attends their conferences and meets these infamous figures in their natural habitats. He has a gift for witty caricatures, stunning anecdotes and countering misinformation with clarity, reason and research. This is investigative writing at its best. PRAISE

In 1982, a unique naval campaign was fought in the South Atlantic. The only war to be fought in the open ocean since World War II, the Falklands War pitted two adversaries in a remarkably closely fought campaign. The Royal Navy was among the world’s most advanced, yet fighting nearly 8,000 miles from home and with little in reserve. Although a second-tier power, the Argentinians had the advantage of fighting close to home, and an array of modern weaponry with devastating potential. In this book, naval historian Robert Brown dissects the Royal Navy task force that fought and won in the Falklands. Researched from an array of primary sources, he reassesses all aspects of the fleet’s capabilities, how it was organized and led, and what made this far-flung campaign possible. He examines the tactics that the Royal Navy devised to take on the Argentinian Navy and Air Force, and how the campaign was fought, including highlighting some of the lesser-known actions of the naval war. Superbly illustrated throughout, with dramatic new artwork of key moments in the campaign, 3D diagrams, maps and archive photos, this is a timely examination of perhaps the Royal Navy’s last great expeditionary fleet. Robert Brown has had a lifelong interest in warships and navies, starting when he was christened aboard the frigate HMCS Stettler. He is a keen ship modeller, and has written five Shipcraft titles, the latest being Royal Navy Aircraft Carriers: Hermes, Ark Royal, and the Illustrious Class. He also wrote Battleship Warspite in the Original Builders’ Plans series, and is a contributor to Warship. He is a retired IT professional who lives on the west coast of Canada.

Tanks in the Burma Campaign 1942–45 Jack Bowsher A fully illustrated survey of tank warfare in the Burma campaign, and how the Allies developed tank-led all-arms warfare in the most unlikely theatre.

The role of Fourteenth Army’s tanks in Burma is one of the least-known aspects of the ‘Forgotten War’. Yet from February 1942 to May 1945, as the British and Indian armies fought first to retreat intact, and then to go on the offensive, armour was key to battling Japanese infantry, bunkers, and anti-tank guns. In this book, Jack Bowsher draws on his years of research to assess how tank warfare developed in Burma, starting with the improvised heroics of 7th Armoured Brigade, who were diverted suddenly to its defence. The first offensive use of tanks was in 1943 at First Arakan; although a disaster, this was the catalyst for transforming armour in the theatre. In 1944, equipped with more powerful medium tanks, armoured units were decisive in turning back the U-Go invasion of India: at Imphal and at Kohima incredible efforts were made to get tanks into action in the mountains where they overwhelmed the Japanese. By 1945 tanks were spearheading Fourteenth Army’s offensive, most notable in the Battle of Meiktila, where all-arms columns, led by the 255th Indian Tank Brigade, struck the Japanese 80 miles behind the front line. Packed with original illustrations of the tanks involved and archive combat photos, this is an essential guide to how tanks proved themselves in the difficult terrain of Burma. Jack Bowsher is Head of History in a secondary school in Hertfordshire. In 2023 he completed a Masters in Military History, which led to his first book, Forgotten Armour: Tank Warfare in Burma. He has since written two other books on the Burma campaign, Thunder Run: Meiktila 1945 and Fighting Retreat: Burma 1942. During the French and Indian War, the defenders of New France were led by the redoubtable Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, whose initial successes against the British and their allies in 1756–58 ended in defeat in 1759 at the battle of the Plains of Abraham. In this lively study, Robbie MacNiven examines the various forces led by Montcalm in Canada at a formative time in that country’s history. Montcalm’s forces were composed of recently arrived regular French Army troops alongside locally recruited militia and seasoned French colonial infantry, working in conjunction with a number of First Nations peoples hostile to the British. All elements of the diverse forces defending New France are assessed in this engaging account, drawing upon the latest research and findings from the battlefields and garrisons of 18th-century Canada. The forces involved are depicted in detail in the period illustrations and specially commissioned artwork plates. Rhineland Hitler’s Last Defence, 1944–45 Anthony Tucker-Jones A dramatic retelling of the desperate battle of the Rhineland during World War II from the German perspective. The Rhineland was where Adolf Hitler sowed the seeds for the Second World War when he remilitarized it in breach of the Treaty of Versailles in 1936, and by late 1944 the Rhine provided the last major obstacle to the advancing Allied armies that were threatening the Fatherland itself.

In this new history of this vital campaign, respected military historian Anthony Tucker-Jones describes the race against time as the Germans fought to stave off the inevitable. It was essential that the Germans held the west bank in order to protect the Rhine crossings at Cologne, Bonn, Koblenz and Remagen, but Hitler was intent on counter-attacking in the Ardennes in the winter of 1944 and this meant there was little left to bolster the defences of the Rhine. Rhineland relates the course of this desperate defence, describing the build-up of forces and operational plans before going on to tell the story of the campaign from the point of view of the forces involved, from the ordinary German soldier through to the high command. Over its near-100-year existence, many of the absolute legends of the sport have taken their place at its start line, eager for glory as they chase the sun south. Eddy Merckx won it three times, Jacques Anquetil five times and Sean Kelly triumphed on no less than seven occasions during the 1980s. Other Paris–Nice champions include Raymond Poulidor, Joop Zoetemelk, Alberto Contador, Tadej Pogacar, Geraint Thomas, Freddy Maertens and some cyclist called Bradley Wiggins. Many of these legends graduated to full Tour de France glory the same year, having sharpened their form on the road to Nice. PRAISE

The road to Tunis had been a long and difficult one for the Allies. British General Kenneth Anderson had pushed his men to capture Tunis before the Axis forces could arrive. After several difficult battles, the First Army had been sufficiently reinforced by April 1943, and it was time to launch the final series of operations to destroy the Italian and German factions left in Tunisia, which would ultimately result in 250,000 Axis soldiers surrendering. Historian and author Ian G Mitchell explores the fierce fighting in North Africa, delving into Anderson’s movements and General Hans-Jurgen von Arnim's plans for the Germans. It covers the actions at Banana Ridge, the Basin, Longstop Hill, Gueriat el Atach, Jebel Bou Aoukaz and Cactus Farm. The role of the US in this conflict is also mentioned. While the fighting outside Tunis has been overlooked, it proved an action of great bravery, with four Victoria Crosses being awarded. Ian G Mitchell is a historian and author. He has previously published a book on Operation Vulcan and was a historical adviser to the British Army on this topic.

A lavishly presented atlas covering the many battles and campaigns that defined the reign of Queen Victoria. In 1815 the Treaty of Vienna concluded the Napoleonic Wars and provided the basis for a general European peace that lasted for nearly a hundred year. Great Britain’s last European rival for Empire and global domination had been neutralised, and between 1815 and 1901 – Britain's imperial century – around ten million square miles of territory and roughly 400 million people were added to the British Empire. During every day of every year of Queen Victoria’s reign (1837–1901), British forces were engaged somewhere across the world, and these conflicts are explained and illustrated in this exhaustive atlas. Over this so-called period of Pax Britanica, the British Government awarded some 43 campaign medals with a total of 202 clasps for copious small wars, fought against irregular forces, as well as larger scale conflicts fought against regular armies. Featuring over 135 newly created maps, all expertly explained and put into context, this new atlas examines the role Victoria’s Army, and to a lesser extent the Royal Navy in the execution of their role as Soldiers of the Queen in the inspiring victories and dismal defeats of what Rudyard Kipling called the ‘savage wars of peace.’ Nick Lipscombe MSc FRHistS served for 34 years in the British Army and is an accomplished historian, author and lecturer. His works include the award-winning Peninsular War Atlas and Concise History, Wellington’s Guns, Wellington Invades France, the official Waterloo 200 Bicentenary compendium, Wellington’s Eastern Front and The English Civil War: An Atlas and Concise History of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms 1639–51.

Berlin Airlift 1948–49 The opening battle of the Cold War Mark Lardas Fully illustrated throughout, this is a focused study of how the greatest airlift of the 20th century was sparked, organized and flown, and why it succeeded.
H I S TO RY / M I L I TA RY / AV I AT I O N & S PA C E Osprey Publishing | 4/20/2027 9781472875631 | $25.00 / $33.00 Can. Trade Paperback | 96 pages | Carton Qty: 1 9.8 in H | 7.2 in W | 1 in T | 1 lb Wt Illustrated throughout with 65 photos and 16 pages of colour illustrations
The Berlin Airlift was the first battle of the Cold War, and arguably its most decisive operation. In the opening act as the Iron Curtain descended across Europe, the USSR blockaded free West Berlin to force its surrender. Its only chance was a Western airlift on a scale never attempted, to feed and heat a capital city through air power alone. In this book, aviation historian Mark Lardas studies the Berlin Airlift on the strategic, technical, and operational levels. Berlin would starve if the campaign was not flown relentlessly and at maximum efficiency, eking the most out of World War II technology. Flown by US and British forces with French and local German assistance on the ground, the airlift was initially improvised, but its systems were rapidly streamlined to maximise capacity and speed at all costs, with one transport reaching Berlin every 30 seconds at its height, and resulting in more than 100 fatalities. This is the story of an operation that forged West Germany out of the rubble of occupied zones, led to the West banding together in NATO, proved the capability of Anglo-American air forces to flexibly project power, and saved the West Berliners from the grip of Stalin. Mark Lardas has always been fascinated by things related to the sea and sky. From building models of ships and aircraft as a teen, he then studied Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, but his interest in aviation led him to take a job on the then-new Space Shuttle program, where he worked for the next 30 years as a navigation engineer. Currently he develops commercial aircraft systems as a quality assurance manager. He has written numerous books on military, naval or maritime history.

M36 Tank Destroyer vs Jagdtiger North West Europe 1944–45 William E. Hiestand This fully illustrated study examines the combat histories of the US Army's M36 tank destroyer and Germany’s mighty Jagdtiger during 1944–45.
H I S TO RY / M I L I TA RY Osprey Publishing | 4/20/2027 9781472874184 | $23.00 / $31.00 Can. Trade Paperback | 80 pages | Carton Qty: 1 9.8 in H | 7.2 in W Colour illustrations throughout, including profiles, technical drawings, battlescene artworks, maps and photographs.
In the climactic months of World War II in Europe the M36 tank destroyer entered US Army service and Nazi Germany’s monumental Jagdtiger also reached the front line. While the M36 was an upgunned development of the M10, the Jagdtiger was based on the chassis of the Tiger II heavy tank. The M36 had its 90mm main gun in an open-topped turret, while the Jagdtiger’s mighty 128mm armament, mounted in a casemate, could theoretically outrange and defeat any Allied tank. In the event, the US vehicle proved to be a dependable counter to Germany’s heavy tanks, but the Jagdtiger developed a reputation for mechanical unreliability. While the Jagdtiger was issued to just two German Army anti-tank units, the M36 equipped seven US Army tank-destroyer battalions by the end of 1944 and had largely supplanted the earlier M10 by war’s end. In this book, William Hiestand explains how both types saw combat in Operation Nordwind (31 December 1944–25 January 1945), intended to support faltering German forces in the Battle of the Bulge. Featuring rare photographs, specially commissioned full-colour artwork and mapping alongside the authoritative text, this study tells of the story of these two very different vehicles in combat in 1944–45. William E. Hiestand has worked for over 30 years as a US Department of Defense analyst, focusing on military issues and serving in a wide variety of analytic, leadership, and representational roles. He lives in Virginia near Washington, DC. Edouard A. Warships in the Battle of Britain 1940 The Royal Navy's counter-invasion fleet Angus Konstam Fully illustrated, this is the first book to study the Royal Navy’s World War II plans and preparations to defeat any German invasion force at sea.

While ‘the Few’ of RAF Fighter Command fought to deny the Luftwaffe superiority over southern England, it was the Royal Navy that was ultimately charged with defeating any invasion force at sea. All the warships the Navy could spare were deployed to ports in home waters, and if an invasion had been launched, it would have been a fight to the death. Yet this is the first book ever to examine how the Royal Navy prepared for this climactic battle. Naval historian Angus Konstam here draws on a wealth of records and accounts to present a concise study of sea power in the battle for Britain’s survival, from the Home Fleet battleships in Scapa Flow to motor torpedo boats on the front-line Channel ports. He explores their deployments and doctrine for responding to an amphibious invasion, explains what success would have depended on, and he evaluates the effectiveness the Royal Navy would likely have had. Illustrated with detailed colour profiles of warships involved, archive photos, new artwork and mapping, and including the roles of intelligence-gathering, technology and airpower in the anti-invasion plans, this unveils the hidden, maritime side of the Battle of Britain. Arriving in Burma in 1942 to survey the environment and finalise his development of long range penetration units, Major General Orde Wingate set up the training and deployment of the Chindits. Under Operation Longcloth, the Chindits crossed the Chindwin into Burma in February 1943. The 3,000-man patrol undertook considerable feats of physical endurance, attacked enemy positions, sabotaged lines of communications and made themselves a nuisance to the Japanese. The survivors returned in May 1943, bringing to an end the first Chindit campaign. With detailed maps, stunning artwork and period images, this book looks at the origins and training of Wingate’s long range penetration units and how Operation Longcloth became the basis of the Chindit legend. Written by expert historian Robert Lyman, the work explores how Wingate and the Chindits were heavily publicised even though the operation was a failure and their effectiveness was controversial. Robert Lyman is regarded as one of Britain’s most talented military historians. He has written several books for Osprey, including three other Campaign titles.

US volunteers served in a variety of foreign military organizations, from World War I’s Western Front to the skies of China in World War II. In this fully illustrated study, Bret Werner explores the lesser-known aspects of the volunteers’ stories alongside high-profile examples such as the Lafayette Escadrille in World War I and the Flying Tigers in World War II, with his account featuring rare archive photographs and eight plates of specially commissioned full-color artwork. During World War I, American volunteers served in the French Air Force, Foreign Legion, American Ambulance Field Service, and Canadian Expeditionary Force. After 1918, US personnel fought in the Polish–Soviet War and Spanish Civil War. The start of World War II in Europe prompted Americans to enlist not only in the “Eagle Squadrons” of Britain’s Royal Air Force, but also the Royal Navy, British Army, and Home Guard, while members of the American Field Service served in France in 1940. The American Volunteer Group, aka the “Flying Tigers,” took to the air over war-torn China as Chiang Kaishek’s regime strove to defeat the Japanese invaders. All of these volunteers are examined and depicted in this lively account of American men and women serving in voluntary military roles across the globe. Bret Werner was raised in the Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania. He is deeply involved with living history organizations with an emphasis on the soldier of the 20th century. The author is also an associate member of the First Special Service Force Association, and he attends the veteran reunions every year. Males and females differ more in coloration than any other species and are thought to pair for life. Secretive by nature, they spend most of their lives in cover, rarely mixing with other birds. Mainly seed-eaters, they also feed extensively on tree buds, making them a scourge of commercial orchards, while their striking looks and ability to whistle human melodies once made them popular cagebirds. Drawing on decades of study and personal insight—much previously unpublished—alongside research from academics across Europe, Professor Ian Newton provides an unparalleled portrait of Bullfinch biology and behaviour. From plumage and song to feeding ecology, breeding strategies and seasonal movements, this book explores monogamy and reproduction, diet and habitat, population trends and decline, and the species’ complex relationship with people. Enlivened by more than 100 colour photos, The Bullfinch is both a celebration of a remarkable bird and a definitive reference for anyone captivated by the hidden lives of finches. Ian Newton, one of Britain’s leading ornithologists, began his career studying finch ecology at the University of Oxford, before joining the Natural Environment Research Council. An FRS since 1993, his other awards include the Union Medal of the BOU in 1987, the President’s Medal of the British Ecological Society in 1989, and the Gold Medal of the RSPB in 1991. In 2026, Pope Leo XIV asked Bishop Erik Varden to preach the Lent Retreat to the Roman Curia. Alight with Hidden Glory traces a Lenten journey proposed to the head of the Catholic Church and his closest collaborators, but has much to say to all people of good will. Informed by Scripture and the liturgy, illumined by the insights of Bernard of Clairvaux, a man who helped shape medieval Europe, the book addresses questions of timeless relevance: What is the meaning of freedom? How can we speak well about truth? How do we respond when high ideals are compromised by human betrayal? Erik Varden reveals Lent not as deprivation but as a clarifying pilgrimage toward Christ’s ‘hidden glory.’ This contemplative yet urgent work invites readers to walk the exodus path with renewed courage, vigilance, and hope. Erik Varden is a monk and bishop. Norwegian by birth, he studied at Cambridge and in Rome. Having served as abbot of Mount Saint Bernard Abbey, he was appointed to the ancient see of Trondheim in 2019. His books are read throughout the world. With Bloomsbury Continuum he has previously published The Shattering of Loneliness, Entering the Twofold Mystery, Chastity, and Healing Wounds.

The catalyst for this frosty metamorphosis of 20th century history is the impact of the Tunguska asteroid, deep in Siberia, in 1908. From this Ground Zero, emerge the Gleissen, silent harbingers of an eternal winter that follows in their ponderous wake. As they spread across the continent, agriculture collapses and people flock to cities as they seek protection from the deadly cold. As the land freezes, so does history: the Tsar still rules Russia; the Belle Époque endures; and the First World War never happened. But out there, on the ice, a new world is being forged. The extreme, alien cold has transmuted elements into strange new forms, a ‘black physics’ that is the catalyst for a new industrial and scientific revolution. At the heart of it lies Siberia – a ‘Wild East’, a magnet for all the political, religious and scientific fevers shaking the world at the dawn of the 20th century, the crucible where black physics, shamanic lore and the cold logic of winter combine. And Benedykt’s final destination. Will he embrace the ice, or destroy it? PRAISE

In April 2018 David Price, dedicated aviation museum volunteer and author of The Crew and Mosquito Men, decided to build a Spitfire replica in his back garden. In How to Build a Spitfire he juxtaposes the story of the ups and down of his own ambitious project to recreate an icon of British aviation with a narrative of the development of the Spitfire itself, focusing in particular on the construction and production of the aircraft and its various component parts (including the Merlin engine), amplified by the testimonies of some of those who worked in the Supermarine factory in Southampton and in other Spitfire production facilities. Bringing together the sometimes light-hearted tale of a personal quest, enthusiastically pursued, with an accessible but authoritative account of the technical workings of a war-winning weapon, and the stories of some of the men who flew it, How to Build a Spitfire is a distinctive and affectionate homage to an enduring symbol of British engineering genius and national resilience. The penultimate title in the Hitler’s Germany series, this book marks the end of the Second World War and the Nazi regime. It provides detailed year-by-year analysis of a horrific period of Nazi doctrine, and places into context the events that followed the Nazi Party’s rise to power in 1933 and beyond. McDonough skilfully guides readers through the development of early persecution in the 1920s, foreshadowing what was to come once the Nazi Party took power in 1933. He explores the impact of the 1933 Nuremberg Laws, the implementation of pre-war intimidation policies, and the influence of the secret Wannsee Conference on the execution of the “Final Solution.” A meticulous chronicle of the experiences and testimonies of survivors, this book demonstrates how violence against the Jewish population migrated from the beerhall to state bureaucracy. David Bowie and the Search for Life, Death and God A spiritual meditation on his music and creativity Peter Ormerod The story of how David Bowie's search for meaning inspired him to write the music that defined a generation. In this wide-ranging biography, Peter Ormerod explores the quest for spirituality that powered David Bowie's creativity from his earliest recordings to his deathdefying final album. Bowie’s genre-expanding, era-crossing genius had an extraordinary impact on popular culture but his life-long search for spiritual truth and enlightenment has been overlooked. From Bowie's first musical encounters as a choirboy, this book traces his spiritual obsessions over the years. As a young musician at the start of his career, he was enraptured by Tibetan Buddhism. It was the first step in a spiritual journey that would generate his most profound lyrics and music. From the Kabbalahinfluenced tracks of Station to Station to Ziggy Stardust's messiah complex and the profound affinity between Heroes and Christian thought, Ormerod sheds new light on the spiritual traditions behind Bowie's genius. Taking Bowie’s spiritual explorations and faith seriously, Ormerod shows us how this quest for meaning propelled him through his darkest moments and biggest successes, lending his music a timelessness and depth that has spoken to so many people across the world. Whether experiencing a dark night of the soul in LA during his occult phase or reciting the Lord's prayer in front of thousands of concertgoers, Bowie was always searching for that universal truth that lies beyond everyday reality. Pearl Harbor Japan's Greatest Disaster Mark Stille A detailed re-examination of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Day of Infamy that saw the USA enter World War II. In this the first comprehensive treatment of Pearl Harbor since the early 1990s. respected Pacific War naval historian Mark E. Stille traces the road to war and the Japanese attack itself. He examines the role of the man behind the operation, Japanese Admiral Yamamoto, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of the plan. The American preparations for an attack are also carefully reviewed. The heart of the book is a comprehensive narrative of Pearl Harbor along with an appreciation of its results placed in proper perspective. In common with many of the major campaigns of the Pacific War, many myths surround the Battle of Pearl Harbor, and, amongst others, Mark explores and dismantle the myth of Yamamoto as a military genius, as well as the myth that the attack was brilliantly planned. Long regarded as brilliant strike, Mark argues in Pearl Harbor that the attack was instead a tactical disappointment, an operational failure and a strategic disaster. Mark E. Stille is the author of numerous Osprey titles focusing on naval history in the Pacific. He recently concluded a nearly 40-year career in the intelligence community, including tours on the faculty of the Naval War College, on the Joint Staff and on US Navy ships. Throughout the war on the Eastern Front, there were two consistent trends. The Red Army battled to learn how to fight and win, while involved in a struggle for its very survival. But by 1944 it had a leadership that was able to wield it with lethal effect and with far more effective equipment than before. By contrast, the Wehrmacht had commenced a slow process of decline after the invasion of the Soviet Union. Hitler became increasingly unwilling to delegate decision-making to commanders in the field, which had been crucial to earlier success. The long years of fighting had also taken a heavy toll. Thousands of irreplaceable junior officers and NCOs were dead, wounded or prisoners. Renowned Eastern Front expert Prit Buttar expertly brings these contrasting fortunes to life, trends which culminated in the huge battles of Bagration. As this masterful study conclusively shows, in 1944 the Red Army finally put together a campaign that utterly destroyed the German Army Group Centre. The Wehrmacht suffered the loss of over 300,000 men killed, wounded or taken prisoner and the Red Army rolled forward across Belarus to the outskirts of Warsaw. The end of the war was still many months away, and the Germans managed to reconstruct their line on the Eastern Front, but final victory for the Soviet Union was now only a matter of time as a direct consequence of Bagration. Korea War Without End Richard Dannatt, Robert Lyman A ground-breaking history of this global conflict including the errors and miscalculations made on both sides. Korea: War Without End examines the stand-off between East and West in Korea that ultimately defined the second half of the 20th century. It provides a critical analysis of the lack of preparation by the West for war; the results of the North Korean invasion in June 1950; the counter-stroke by MacArthur in September and then the strategic overreach which led to communist China’s involvement on the North Korean side, and the rapid escalation to consideration of the use of nuclear weapons. Through meticulous analysis of all the source material, this book details the chaos of political decision-making at the war’s outset and as it progressed. The Korean War was not planned as a Communist offensive against the West. In turn, the East did not understand the principle at the core of the Western response to Kim Il-sung’s aggression, namely a refusal to appease an aggressor, the key mistake the West considered to be at the heart of the rise of Nazi Germany and militaristic Japan in the 1930s. Korea: War Without End also considers the effect of the fighting on civilians. While the war was a proxy one between East and West, the people of Korea suffered immensely, with approximately 3 million war fatalities and a larger proportional civilian death toll than World War II. This is the definitive history of the conflict that is long overdue. General the Lord Dannatt GCB CBE MC DL is one of the UK’s most respected military commentators. As Chief of the General Staff his leadership and example were critical in shaping the debate about the role of the professional army in modern warfare. Robert Lyman is one of Britain’s top military historians with several acclaimed books to his name. Goethe was the inventor of the psychological novel, a pioneer scientist, great man of the theatre and a leading politician. As A. N. Wilson argues in this groundbreaking biography, it was his genius and insatiable curiosity that helped catapult the Western world into the modern era. A N. Wilson tackles the life of Goethe with characteristic wit and verve. From his youth as a wild literary prodigy to his later years as Germany’s most respected elder statesman, Wilson hones in on Goethe’s undying obsession with the work he would spend his entire life writing – Faust. Goethe spent over 60 years writing his retelling of Faust, a strange and powerful work that absorbed all the philosophical questions of his time as well as the revolutions and empires that came and went. It is his greatest work, but as Wilson explores, it is also something much more - it is the myth of how we came to be modern. PRAISE

This engrossing history conclusively shows that those caught up in it believed they had nothing to lose by fighting without regard for the rules of so-called “civilized warfare.” The call to arms “Liberty or Death” was far more than just rhetoric. At its grimmest level, it was a conflict in which military restraint was more the exception than the rule, a struggle in which combatants believed their very existence was in question. This led to an acceptance of violence against persons and property as preferable to a defeat equated with political, cultural, and even physical extinction. It was war with an acceptance of ferocity and brutality – anything to avoid defeat. A number of historians have previously concluded that the founding struggle reached a level of ferocity few Americans now associate with the movement for independence. However, these studies have described what happened, without looking in detail at why the conflict took such a violent a turn. Written by two esteemed historians, War Without Mercy does exactly that. Based on years of research and enlivened by primary sources, this is a fresh look at a period of history we thought we knew. PRAISE

In the early days of ancient Greece, queer love was celebrated. The most famous warrior in antiquity loved another man, the poet whose lyrics were memorised by philosophers and kings sang of her desire for women. Men could swear oaths of undying love and live out the rest of their lives together in peace. What fragments survive of this ancient world all tell us one thing: it was not a sin to be queer. In this extraordinary book, Harry Tanner sets out on a journey to discover the origins of homophobia in the West. He follows the traces of this sinister idea as it swept across the ancient Mediterranean. Wherever he discovers the roots of homophobia taking hold, Tanner finds a confluence of crises mirrored across the centuries. Inequality, fear and an obsession with self-control—this is how societies turn on their queer citizens, time and time again, since the dawn of history. This is a powerful story that draws on the rich world of the ancients to reveal how homophobia infected Western religion and ideology—the consequences of which we are still living with today—and to that end how we can move forward and resist homophobia in the future. Whatever we think we feel, you can be sure that the past has had a part to play in it. In Soft, Ferdinand Mount tells the millennium-long history of emotion through delightful snapshots, often mischievous storytelling and a masterly command of history. Mount explores the shifting importance societies have placed on empathy for the misfortunes of others. Each seismic moment, Mount argues, from the French Revolution to Civil Rights, has had a corresponding sentimental revolution that has fuelled great political turning points and come to define human civilization. But no one wants to be accused of being sentimental; its detractors call it soppy, effeminate and populist—the stuff of soap operas and pop songs. The Reformation tried to stamp out excessive emotion, the Victorians resolutely maintained their stiff upper lips and no one loathed sentimentality more than the modernists—and yet, today, Mount argues it is not the stoics who are ruling the roost: we are living in an age of emotion. From the Occitan poets of the 12th century to Paul McCartney’s songs, and modern debates around woke, this is a witty insight into the story of emotions and the way they have swayed human history. Nemesis Medieval England's Greatest Enemy Catherine Hanley The extraordinary tale of Philip Augustus, one of medieval Europe’s greatest monarchs, and the part he played in the downfall of four Plantagenet kings of England. Philip II ruled France with an iron fist for over 40 years, expanding its borders and increasing its power. For his entire reign his counterpart on the English throne was a member of the Plantagenet dynasty, and Philip took on them all: Henry II, Richard the Lionheart, John and Henry III. And yet we know so little about medieval England’s greatest enemy. H I S TO RY / M I L I TA RY / M E D I E VA L Osprey Publishing | 3/2/2027 9781472867483 | $20.00 / $27.00 Can. Historian Catherine Hanley, author of the critically acclaimed 1217, redresses this imbalance, bringing Philip out of the shadows in this fascinating new history. Delving into French medieval archives, Nemesis explores Philip’s motives for attacking England and in doing so we learn not only about him but discover so much more about England’s most colourful and controversial of rulers – the Plantagenets. When Philip first succeeded to the throne in 1180, Henry II of England, thanks to his Angevin and Norman ancestry as well as his wife’s inheritance of Aquitaine, ruled more of France than Philip himself. By the end of Philip’s reign in 1223, the pendulum of power had swung the other way. Nemesis reveals how Philip exploited the constant familiar squabbles of the Plantagenets to secure his grip on France, his wily political manoeuvring combined with a mastery of the medieval battlefield turning France into a powerhouse of Europe. Opening the Gates of Hell is based on over a decade’s research in archives and sites across Europe. It is a ground-breaking examination of the start of the Nazi–Soviet conflict, a narrative history not just of the fighting, but also the impact on civilians, the atrocities committed by both sides and ethnic cleansing carried out by the inhabitants of the regions invaded. This fascinating history tells the stories of bravery, cowardice, misery and horror through the eyes of those who were there including ordinary soldiers, generals, leaders, politicians and civilians on both sides. The book draws on published and unpublished sources from across Germany and Eastern Europe with the majority of the material never having appeared in English-language accounts of the conflict before. The combination of combat accounts, analysis of high-level diplomacy and leadership and the visceral accounts of the atrocities committed by both sides gives this book a unique approach to the war on the Eastern Front and will ensure that it is regarded as the definitive work on the subject for many years to come.
