Three Episcopal Clergymen, Race, and the Civil War Era Loren B. Mead & J. Michael Martinez Race and enslavement were the major issues confronting the Christian Church in the United States throughout the nineteenth century. During the antebellum era, churches debated whether their scriptures condoned race-based slavery. Following the Civil War and Emancipation, white church leaders in the South had three options: (1) Should formerly enslaved persons be welcomed into the segregated church and afforded the opportunity to choose their own leaders as well as make decisions about their congregations? (2) Should these freed people be allowed to join a segregated church governed by white clergy and lay leaders? (3) Should freed people be denied admission altogether? Of course a fourth option should have been an invitation for freed Blacks to join white churches as full members—but owing to the rampant racial discrimination of the time, and social mores, that was simply not considered, even by the most “liberal” Southern clergy. To understand better how these Southern churches evaluated and made their choices in postwar nineteenth-century America, this book examines the lives and careers of three white Episcopal clergy from South Carolina: Peter Fayssoux Stevens (1830-1910), A. Toomer Porter (1828-1902), and William Porcher DuBose (1836-1918). These men present illuminating case studies because they were contemporaries and their early lives were remarkably similar, yet their responses to how the Southern church welcomed or rejected freed Blacks significantly diverged following the Civil War.

It poses the question whether Christian reconciliation and Daoist harmony could be operationalized in ways to ease human suffering caused by interpersonal, intergroup, national, and international conflicts. Introduction to Religions of the African Diaspora Stephanie Y. Mitchem The text draws on over thirty years of the author’s experience studying and teaching African and African Diasporan spiritualities and is informed by the recognition that many students arrive in the classroom with limited understanding of cultural and historical contexts—often carrying preconceived notions about Africa and Black people. The author, a Black U.S. scholar, approaches these topics with both personal insight and academic rigor, having personally navigated many of these same misconceptions. This perspective enriches the material, incorporating the history of Black Studies to challenge prevailing assumptions about the African continent and its diasporas. Pentecostal Prayer Camps and Indigenous Knowledge of Healing Mental Illness in Ghana Francis Ethelbert Kwabena Benyah, University of Copenhagen This open access book is based on a unique body of data on a hitherto understudied field of Pentecostal prayer camps and mental health in Ghana. It investigates and presents empirically grounded cases of persons with mental illness and how they deploy religious resources at prayer camps in Ghana in dealing with their illness. Particularly, the book explores perceived causes of mental illness and how such perceptions influence health seeking behaviours. Comparative Strategies to Engage the Nones Brian H. Smith The book addresses the growing number of Americans who no longer identify with any religious tradition, or the Nones. By 2022 Nones reached 27% of the population. They constitute 31 % of the millennials between 25 and 40, and 33% of the adults in Generation Z between 18 and 25. Kevin Cawley recreates the tumultuous period for gender relations and explores interreligious interactions between Confucians and Catholics. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. By prioritising authors that are often underrepresented in scholarly publishing, including early-career and unaffiliated researchers and those based in/writing about low- and lower-middle- income countries, we hope to engage a more diverse author base, bringing their work to a wider global audience.
