In this innovative open-access study, Jörg Schaub demonstrates that the aesthetic is essential to democratic societies’ aspiration to realize a life of equal freedom for all Revisiting seminal eighteenth-century aesthetic treatises, Schaub advances a new interpretation of modern aesthetics, and in doing so lays the groundwork for his original account of Hegel’s post-ideal conception of aesthetics He argues that what lies at the core of these accounts, and gives them their cultural significance, is the value they accord to free perceptual, emotional and imaginative exploration of the world, and shows how this orientation transforms our understanding of the values of freedom and equality
Building on this interpretation of modern aesthetics, Schaub develops a novel conception of aesthetic recognition that expands familiar recognition relationships by bringing into view the consideration we owe one another as perceiving, feeling and imaginative beings Through a range of case studies, he shows that many conflicts in democratic life are also struggles for aesthetic recognition This perspective yields a critical theory of aesthetics capable of diagnosing and criticising forms of aesthetic misrecognition

Philosophical anthropology investigates what makes us human, but it has produced accounts that exclude some members of our species It relies often on non-naturalistic “philosophies of consciousness” that locate humanity in the cognitive capacity to objectively represent things, to reason teleologically and use tools, to use symbols and language, or to be self-conscious and question existence This work pursues an alternative, thoroughly naturalistic philosophical anthropology by combining Arnold Gehlen’s theory of our behaviorally-detached and institutionally-structured impulses with Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s views on intersubjectivity, affect, sexuality, and social institutions It locates the human within the unique structure of our capacity for feeling, which produces an inclusive account of “the human as the other” or Homo alter
Humans are thoroughly dependent on affective, bodily, communicative bonds, in which other humans appear as sources of pleasure, communicative meaning, institutional norms, and interpersonal approbation and disapprobation However, this socio-biological account of the human denies that human nature alone can prescribe the necessary form of institutions, such as the home, which is a criticism of any potential “political anthropology ” A result of this focus on our social and affective natures is a novel account of shame as a response to institutional and interpersonal exclusion Failing to recognize humanity within our dependency on others and the structure of feeling is a problem in philosophy and society that contributes to the social and metaphysical exclusion of disabled persons, who might lack certain forms of consciousness and cognition

Examining most of the arguments advanced since the beginning of the twentieth century both for and against the admission of sense-data, Mykolas J Drunga argues that the problem cannot be solved by denying that the things we see must exist at the time we see them or by claiming we can see deeply into the past Instead, we will solve it by realizing that what keeps the universe in existence is an eternal spirit This radical conclusion, in conversation with the Idealist philosophers Leibniz and Berkeley, requires taking a first indispensable step––acknowledging the existence of sense-data at the root of perceiving physical objects

BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS?
A progressive open access model for books
BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. By prioritising authors that are often underrepresented in scholarly publishing, including early-career and unaffiliated researchers and those based in/writing about low- and lower-middle- income countries, we hope to engage a more diverse author base, bringing their work to a wider global audience.
THE BOOKS
Following the success of the previous three years, in 2026-27 we will continue to offer three collections of 20 titles each in:
• African Studies & International Development
• Environment & Climate Change
• Gender & Sexuality
BENEFITS TO LIBRARIES
• Contribute to a progressive OA funding model that aims to make 60 research titles available open access immediately on publication at no cost to the authors
• Receive guaranteed perpetual access to the 20 titles in each Open Collection you participate in
• Receive 1 year’s access to ~150 backlist titles in related areas for each Open Collection you participate in
• Be publicly acknowledged on our website
