A progressive open access model for books
BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. By prioritising authors that are often underrepresented in scholarly publishing, including early-career and unaffiliated researchers and those based in/writing about low- and lower-middle- income countries, we hope to engage a more diverse author base, bringing their work to a wider global audience.

Vasilios Vatatzes was an eighteenth-century ethnic Greek scholar, merchant, traveller, and diplomat In 1748, he wrote a biography of the Iranian ruler Nader Shah, in whose court he likely spent extensive time during his multiple trips across Iran In this new annotated English translation, this important source for the late Safavid, Afghan and Afsharid periods of Iranian history is made available to English-speaking scholars Vatatzes was an eyewitness to some of the events of his narrative, offering unique information about the history of Iran and Western Asia that is not attested in other contemporary sources The text provides information about the revival and re-unification of the fragmented Iran under Nader Shah, the Iranian expansion in the Indian Peninsula and the Persian Gulf Vatatzes’s perspective also makes the text unique: his political worldview as an Ottoman-born Greek Christian means he viewed Nader Shah as a role model for the ‘emancipation’ of his coreligionists

Of the hundreds of Persian manuscripts preserved at The Institute of Ismaili Studies, many have long remained unknown or little studied This open-access volume presents the first comprehensive catalogue of the Ismaili texts in this important collection, opening new avenues of research in Ismaili studies and the study of the Iranian world
The catalogue introduces a range of hitherto unidentified authors central to the Ismaili history of the Iranian lands accompanied by concise biographical sketches Each manuscript is described in detail, with information on provenance, scribes, and related codicological features The entries are organised in two main sections: the first devoted to monographs (single, titled works), and the second to anthologies of miscellaneous texts bound together, or majmu?as
In total, 126 manuscripts are examined, spanning a broad historical arc from the Fatimid period including works associated with the renowned Ismaili philosopher and theologian Na?ir-i Khusraw through to the modern era following the nineteenthcentury migration of ?asan ‘Ali Shah, Aga Khan I, from Iran to India The volume is enriched by a substantial introduction, along with carefully prepared tables and indexes that enable readers to locate specific works and authors with ease

This book provides empirical flesh to the assumption that, in a federal state, a second chamber is needed to accommodate regional concerns at a federal level The author explores the institutional history of the Pakistani Senate through its composition, constitutional powers, and key functions as a regional chamber and explains the broader institutional environment in which it operates It analyses the impact of the Pakistani Senate as an overseer of federal policies and legislation of the federal government and appraises the parliamentary performance of the senators in advancing concerns of the provinces at the federal level It also argues that the parliamentary nature of the Pakistani federation has strengthened the executive branch in which the Pakistani Senate operates, and has thus undermined its role as a regional chamber The book provides insight into the Senate’s ‘political legitimacy’ and options for its institutional reforms
