Stories on Skin

A Librarian's Guide to Tattoos as Personal Archives

Terry Baxter, Multnomah County Archives, Oregon, USA & Libby Coyner-Tsosie, University of Massachusetts Amherst, USA

Helps expand archival studies into impermanent media like body art, suggesting that archiving must be considered a form of storytelling

Tattoos are not merely decorative; they contain deep meaning for individuals and communities They document their wearers’ personal histories and position in families or society, and they engage with a communal understanding of symbols

This unique book makes the case that archivists who want to preserve as full a human story as possible must recognize the rich documentation provided by tattoos It also argues, in a broader sense, that traditional archives are not representative of the ways human beings transmit information through time and that they must be augmented by other types of storytelling to provide a more complete record of our species Authors Baxter and Coyner touch on timely topics such as historical narratives, storytelling, cultural traditions, the body as a text, social control, and memorialization by considering tattoos as a personal and community archive Discussing tattoos as a storytelling tool, the authors also challenge how history is kept and who gets included Stories on Skin is committed to the rights of communities to tell their stories in their own way and to the power that right brings

Inside the World’s Haunted Libraries

Courtney M Block, Indiana University Southeast

Experience firsthand encounters with the paranormal in libraries from around the world!

Have you ever noticed that libraries emanate a certain energy? If you’ve ever been alone in a library, chances are you’ve noticed a not-quite-empty feeling This isn’t surprising From the constant flow of people, the echoing voices from authors on the shelves, and archives full of artifacts and records, libraries are inherently haunting spaces There is no other place in society quite like the library, in fact, and their liminal nature might just serve as a beacon to the strange It’s no wonder that people experience anomalous phenomena in libraries around the world

In this work, librarian and paranormal researcher Courtney M Block collects these encounters and presents the personal paranormal experiences of library workers from around the world Inside, you’ll find firsthand reports from libraries in Canada, Australia, England, India, the United States, and many more! Featuring tales of strange figures seen through the stacks, barcode scanners sending messages, and beloved patrons who might still be visiting their favorite libraries in the afterlife, this book celebrates libraries and the ghosts within them

BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS?

A progressive open access model for books

BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. By prioritising authors that are often underrepresented in scholarly publishing, including early-career and unaffiliated researchers and those based in/writing about low- and lower-middle- income countries, we hope to engage a more diverse author base, bringing their work to a wider global audience.

THE BOOKS

Following the success of the previous three years, in 2026-27 we will continue to offer three collections of 20 titles each in:

• African Studies & International Development

• Environment & Climate Change

• Gender & Sexuality

BENEFITS TO LIBRARIES

• Contribute to a progressive OA funding model that aims to make 60 research titles available open access immediately on publication at no cost to the authors

• Receive guaranteed perpetual access to the 20 titles in each Open Collection you participate in

• Receive 1 year’s access to ~150 backlist titles in related areas for each Open Collection you participate in

• Be publicly acknowledged on our website
