Between 1558 and 1604, more than 400 subjects of Queen Elizabeth I found themselves in contact with the Spanish Inquisition This book draws on the records of their experiences and testimonies to provide a fresh perspective on a crucial period of religious divergence

Teresa Tinsley examines the varied experiences of merchants, sailors, diplomats and prisoners of war, highlighting cases of persecution, conversion, ambivalence, and cultural adaptation Paying close attention to an impressive assemblage of original sources, Tinsley challenges exaggerated claims about the cruelty and scale of the Inquisition’s actions against the English, which fed contemporary anti-Spanish propaganda and continue to colour perceptions of early modern globalisation and European colonisation today She shows that there were witnesses, litigants and collaborators as well as defendants, not all were Protestant, very few were treated harshly and most attempted, with variable success, to bridge the Reformation gap between Elizabeth’s Protestant England and Philip II’s post-Tridentine Spain

Their stories provide not only a comprehensive rebuttal of notions derived from the Black Legend, but also privileged access to the historical reality of the lives of individuals at the interface of opposed religious cultures Cross cultural contact – whether through trade or maritime conflict – brought individuals face to face with differences in religious faith and practice and those interrogated by the Inquisition were required to articulate these This has resulted in a unique corpus of historical evidence which exposes the multi-dimensional and fluid nature of religious affiliation, nationhood, and personal identity which drove conflict between the two nations

In June 1609, two judges left Bordeaux for a territory at the very edge of their jurisdiction, a Basque-speaking province on the Atlantic coast called the Pays de Labourd In four months, they executed up to 80 women and men for the crime of witchcraft, causing a wave of suspects to flee into Spain Witnesses described lurid tales of cannibalism, vampirism, and demonic sex One of the judges, Pierre de Lancre, published a sensationalist account of this diabolical netherworld With other accounts seemingly destroyed, this witch-hunt – France's largest – has always been seen through de Lancre’s eyes The narrative, re-told over the centuries, is that of a witch-hunt caused by a bigoted outsider

This book presents Herman Hugo’s The Siege of Breda (1626) in a modern-spelling edition of Henry Gage’s 1627 English translation, introduced and contextualised by Paul Arblaster Hugo’s text is a classic of Latin Baroque historical writing that comprehensively recounts a nine-month military campaign in the Low Countries (1624-25) which was a showcase of early 17th-century siege warfare and attracted the attention and involvement of almost every country in Europe His translator was an Englishman who served in the siege as a company captain Arblaster shines a light on Hugo’s first-hand account of the siege, with its considerations of every aspect of the military operations and their human consequences Hugo took part in the campaign himself as chaplain to the general who conducted the siege, Ambrogio Spinola, and so had privileged access to the decision-making process, as well as close familiarity with the various events and incidents that he recounts Hugo also devotes attention to the moral and material state of the soldiery and of the besieged; describes individual actions, lapses, feats of heroism, duels, ambushes and stratagems; and considers the wider propaganda war that surrounded the siege As a result, his book offers a contemporary commentary on the role of honour, reputation and image in 17th-century warfare, as well as vital insights into the perspective of one of the first and foremost celebrity generals of the time

This open access book provides a thought-provoking new perspective on European imperialism in the 19th and 20th centuries It does so by inquiring how smaller European powers and regions at the margins of the continent integrated into a globally interconnected world that was heavily shaped by their more powerful European neighbours Case studies on Nordic, Eastern and Central European regions uncover how countries such as Sweden, Serbia or Switzerland became imperial, despite having no or only short-lived overseas colonies of their own By uncovering the structures and networks that enabled these regions to actively participate in and benefit from the imperial world around them, these case studies also reveal a crucial dynamic of European imperialism that has rarely been analysed in extant historiographies of Empire and Europe: the fact that 19th-century European imperial subjugation of almost the entire planet was driven not only by undeniable rivalry and competition among the greater European powers, but also necessarily depended on collaboration and exchanges across national and imperial boundaries

Examining the impact of economic turning points such as the simultaneous crises of Western Keynesianism and Eastern Marxism-Leninism, the oil and financial shocks of the mid-1970s or the interplay of economic liberalization and decolonization on small state economic policy-making and diplomacy, eight empirical case studies are here brought together to illustrate the variety of Cold War-era economic nationalisms and their oscillation between protectionism and free market approaches Small states in East and West were, as the contributions demonstrate, very capable of turning smallness into a strategic asset and expanding their room for manoeuvre in a quickly shifting global economy

Medievalists have denied the historical existence of King Arthur for over 50 years Arthur and the Languages of Britain demonstrates how linguistic evidence can be employed to see if the earliest historical records that mention Arthur are reliable

The book begins with an analysis of the evidence for the Anglo-Saxon invasions and the response of the Britons, and introduces the main methodological approaches employed in the linguistic analysis of historical records It then provides evidence for Arthur as a Cumbric-speaker active in the region about Hadrian’s Wall, before assessing the linguistic evidence which supports the validity of the references to Arthur in the Welsh Annals and the Historia Brittonum

Bernard Mees reflects on how Arthur is recorded as having taken part in the Battle of Mount Badon, a site that has never been located, and dying at Camlann, now Castlesteads on Hadrian’s Wall He uses linguistic analysis of the evidence recorded for the existence of Arthur to support the historical reliability of these records Mees concludes with a summary of how Geoffrey of Monmouth created pseudo-historical stories from the references to Arthur in these early sources, turning Ambrosius Aurelianus into Merlin and Mordred into King Arthur ’s nephew and the lover of his queen Guinevere

By examining sources ranging from textual to archaeological it reveals the history of Nalanda and its remarkable continuity with perceptible intellectual paraphernalia for which it became famous over the period Contrary to the exposition of a pan-Indian decline of Buddhism, evidence gleaned from the various quarters from Nalanda amply demonstrate that monasteries were in a flourishing state in the entire region and render any simple and conventional explanations of the decline of Buddhism in this period problematic Thus, the book attempts to understand the dynamics of a complex religious process with the focus on this monastery and its religious domain The interpretation is largely based upon the material records generated in the course of the excavations at Nalanda Nalanda as a site in archaeological and historical parlance connotes a Buddhist monastic establishment which grew up under the patronage of both royal as well as non-royal categories The incomplete excavation of this site has revealed a range of artifacts such as seals, inscriptions, and images attesting a larger monastic set up which underwent varied religious experiences Primarily a Buddhist site, Nalanda bears a remarkable presence of other religious traditions such as Brahmanism and Jainism The evidence of Brahmanical pantheons, symbols and other ritual entities presents a fascinating case study to understand and extrapolate the diversity of religious space of this monastic site There is sufficient archaeological data which suggests that the monastery witnessed a conjugation of different religious and ideological streams The book will make an important intervention in existing theoretical model that explains the decline of Buddhism

The post-WWII era was a time of superpower confrontation and antagonistic bloc politics, but it was also a period in which organized internationalism reached its peak as both an ideological value and a political practice This open access volume explores how international organizations affected the evolution and nature of Cold War rivalries, and how they in turn were shaped by them In seeking to understand the role that international organizations have played as sites of confrontation, this volume also highlights their role as spaces for mediation and negotiation, particularly for middle-size powers and colonized or newly decolonized countries Through multiple perspectives, based on a diverse array of historical sources, the authors collectively explore how international organizations were able to bridge and move beyond the Cold War divide by promoting common causes and shaping common scientific knowledge, communities and practices

Rather than focusing exclusively on western-dominated institutions within the UN system which have received the most scholarly attention to date, this book highlights the role of lesser-known groups such as the Paris-based International Child Center, the Prague-based International Union of Students and historical actors such as Soviet public health experts and Chinese development specialists In doing so, it asks new questions about the role of international organizations in securing peace and security across the modern world, and their role as negotiator in times of tension and crisis

This book uses the travels, experiences, and activism of anti-slavery lecturer and East India reformer George Thompson as a starting point for a wider exploration and reassessment of the ways in which Company rule in India was challenged in the decades before the Indian Uprising of 1857 An important organiser in the campaign for East India reform as the main spokesperson for the Aborigines Protection Society and a champion of the causes of Indian rulers such as Pratap Singh and Bahadur Shah Zafar, Thompson was also a flawed character As a paid agent, he was remunerated for his activism and accusations of pecuniary self-interest were never far away

His story therefore offers important insights into the limitations of early anti-colonial sentiment, and the problems of cosmopolitan collaboration in colonial contexts By exploring early Victorian debates about India’s commercial potential, role in the imperial labour market, and place within an increasingly interconnected post-emancipation empire, the book seeks to contextualise evolving ideas regarding Britain’s humanitarian responsibilities towards her ‘fellow subjects in the East’, and how these connected with, and were superseded by, nascent forms of Indian anti-colonialism, political protest, and civic activism

Examining the intellectual origins, political actions and visionary legacy of the European Unity League, this timely study rectifies the notion that the organization was merely a fringe group of eclectic and elite pro-European enthusiasts and instead reveals the lasting impact of the movement on European ideals and modern international relations While the league was ultimately a failure in that it neither prevented war nor gave rise to a federation, Ulrich Tiedau shows that the organization did earn sizeable popularity among the British public and Waechter was widely regarded as the early head of the Pan-European movement The European Unity League, Tiedau adroitly concludes, thus set an important precedent for bringing about unity and peace across Europe Based on previously unexplored archival sources and highlighting the British roots in the early European movement, this book connects the history of pacifism with the history of the European idea

This open access book uses new methodologies from the history and sociology of emotions to analyse why people select specific tokens of family inheritance, and how this influences personal identity, cultural heritage, and national memory

Much of our cultural heritage emerges from family histories – with many of the objects curated in museums, stories passed between generations, and monuments marking notable figures being the direct product of familial collections, donations, and investments This edited collection uses emotion as an analytical tool to interpret such behaviours, and offers novel ways to investigate how and why family inheritances from a range of social, racial, and ethnic groups maintain their cultural power, as they move through time and from the private to the public spheres

Drawing on a variety of case studies, and exploring items ranging from Victorian library chairs, to quilts, religious texts, and pieces of intergenerational writing – this volume considers the role of objects and inheritances in the emotional lives of individuals and families, and acknowledges them as agents in the creation of histories and identities

The book is a unique and revealing study of a lower-rank Holocaust perpetrator that will enrich the understanding of all students and scholars of the Holocaust and the Second World War

BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS?

A progressive open access model for books

BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. By prioritising authors that are often underrepresented in scholarly publishing, including early-career and unaffiliated researchers and those based in/writing about low- and lower-middle- income countries, we hope to engage a more diverse author base, bringing their work to a wider global audience.

THE BOOKS

Following the success of the previous three years, in 2026-27 we will continue to offer three collections of 20 titles each in:

• African Studies & International Development

• Environment & Climate Change

• Gender & Sexuality

BENEFITS TO LIBRARIES

• Contribute to a progressive OA funding model that aims to make 60 research titles available open access immediately on publication at no cost to the authors

• Receive guaranteed perpetual access to the 20 titles in each Open Collection you participate in

• Receive 1 year’s access to ~150 backlist titles in related areas for each Open Collection you participate in

• Be publicly acknowledged on our website
