Have you heard about

BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS? A progressive open access model for books BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. By prioritising authors that are often underrepresented in scholarly publishing, including early-career and unaffiliated researchers and those based in/writing about low- and lower-middle- income countries, we hope to engage a more diverse author base, bringing their work to a wider global audience.

THE BOOKS Following the success of the previous three years, in 2026-27 we will continue to offer three collections of 20 titles each in: • African Studies & International Development • Environment & Climate Change • Gender & Sexuality

BENEFITS TO LIBRARIES • Contribute to a progressive OA funding model that aims to make 60 research titles available open access immediately on publication at no cost to the authors • Receive guaranteed perpetual access to the 20 titles in each Open Collection you participate in • Receive 1 year’s access to ~150 backlist titles in related areas for each Open Collection you participate in • Be publicly acknowledged on our website

2ND EDITION

Europe's Long Twelfth Century

Order, Anxiety, and Adaptation, 1095-1229 John D. Cotts, Whitman College, USA CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title John D. Cotts’s Europe’s Long Twelfth Century is an award-winning overview of a key phase in Europe’s medieval history. It reflects on how the region grappled with a variety of cultural possibilities that would ultimately transform the way people thought, lived and thought of themselves. Cotts convincingly contends that the 12th century was fundamentally a period of difficult decisions, adaptation and anxiety, rather than the glorious 'renaissance' mooted in earlier assessments of the era. Women and Gender in Modern Europe An Inclusive History

Jennifer A. Miller, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, USA This book introduces students to the key concepts of women’s history, gender as a category of analysis, and the history of feminism. Spanning the late 19th century to the present day, each chapter highlights major themes of the particular time period right across Europe before concluding with a short bibliography. Whilst covering some familiar narratives in a broadly chronological fashion, Jennifer A. Miller introduces new actors, themes, and conclusions based on the most recent scholarship that further enriches our collective understanding women’s history in modern Europe. Miller presents a Europe of diversity from ethnic and religious perspectives that has also been sorely lacking until now. Beowulf

Poem, Poet and Hero Heather O'Donoghue, University of Oxford, UK The Old English epic poem Beowulf has an established reputation as a canonical text. And yet the original poem has remained inaccessible to all but experienced scholars of Old English. This book aims to present the poem to readers who want to know what makes it such a remarkable work of art, and why it is of such cultural significance. Most readers will only have encountered Beowulf through one of its many translations or adaptations; others have had to take on this unique survivor from a past era as a challenging translation exercise, part of their academic study of the poem. This book sidesteps scholarly debates about the poem’s unknowns – its date, provenance or author – and focusses instead on its poetic artistry, its interleaving of heroic pasts and Christian present, and its poet’s extraordinary breadth of reference, UK May 2026 • US May 2026 192 Pages HB 9781788312882 • £21.00 / $28.00 PB 9781350607507 • £12.99 / $17.95 ePDF 9781350212718 • £18.90 / $25.20 ePub 9781350212725 • £18.90 / $25.20 Bloomsbury Academic

from biblical history to Old Norse myth. But the strange intricacies of Old English metre and poetic language are explained, and the poet’s evocation of the ethics and material world of an imagined pre-Viking Scandinavia is explored. Beowulf: Poem, Poet and Hero follows the story of the poem through its many interwoven voices from different times and places, and the poem emerges as a work of reflective beauty, its human characters full of touching pathos and wisdom, its notorious monsters still speaking to our own societies’ abiding insecurities.

Salazar’s PIDE and Portuguese Society

A History of the Political Police From Below, 1955-74 Duncan Simpson, University of Lisbon, Portugal This book reconceptualizes the relationship between Portuguese society and Salazar’s political police. By studying the PIDE from below, Salazar’s PIDE and Portuguese Society challenges the prevailing historiographic emphasis on processes of topdown repression whose effect has been to relegate the bulk of the population to the status of passive victims. The analysis concentrates on various forms of spontaneous interactions between individual citizens and the PIDE. Duncan Simpson focuses on the mass of depoliticised citizens, rather than the small minority of oppositionists, using new research methodologies, like oral history and opinion surveying, and original archival material in the form of denunciation letters, petitions, and applications to join the PIDE. From a theoretical perspective, the book draws on the international scholarship of totalitarianism, ‘accusatory practices’, and everyday life under dictatorship; work which has highlighted the complexity of the relations between State and society by uncovering the prevalence of widespread processes of individual adjustment and accommodation. Indeed Simpson’s underlying – and convincing – argument is that the relationship between the PIDE and society was far more dynamic, multifaceted, and interactive than has been acknowledged until now.

The German Peasants’ War of 1525 A Conflict Powered by Print

Thomas Kaufmann, University of Göttingen, Germany Why did German agrarian protests, normally very local or regional, all meld together into one vast uprising that became the 1525 ‘Peasants’ War’? Thomas Kaufmann emphatically argues that the recent availability of printing, which created links between the various regions of revolt, led to the conflict distinguishing itself as the largest of all uprisings in German medieval and early modern history. He reveals the Peasants’ War to be a media event driven by its major document, the Twelve Articles, which became the universal programme, printed in numbers to rival even Martin Luther’s key texts of the time. The book offers an overview of the historiography of the war since the 16th century, starting with Luther and his printed UK June 2026 • US June 2026 360 Pages • 50 bw illus PB 9781350468948 • £28.99 / $39.95 HB 9781350468931 • £85.00 / $115.00 ePDF 9781350468955 • £76.50 / $103.50 ePub 9781350468962 • £76.50 / $103.50 Bloomsbury Academic

It goes on to deal with print before the war, setting out the tropes and images which would be utilised in the struggle. Kaufmann examines the literature of the Peasants’ War itself, through the analysis of around 250 printed publications, and lastly explores the historical significance of the war and its legacy in art, literature, political theory and theology.

Emotions, Subjectivities, and Memories of the Hitler Youth Generation Between Reality and Fantasy, 1945–2015 Tiia Sahrakorpi, Weber State University, USA This book examines the ways in which Germany’s Hitler Youth generation has attempted to untangle its emotions and deal with questions relating to individual complicity and innocence. As the world is currently facing a new wave of fascism and misinformation, there is much to be gained from improving our understanding of how and why young people who believed far-right ideologies transitioned to a new system governed by democratic values. Tiia Sahrakorpi explores how individuals not only remember, but represent and negotiate contentious pasts. Hitler Youth Generation addresses a range of themes that lie at the intersection of memory, emotion, tactical agency, and social and political change. Whilst the book focuses on the Hitler Youth generation’s writings and modern Germany in particular, its overarching goal is to provide readers with an understanding of how applying a history of emotions analysis to representations of childhood memories can offer novel insights into the histories of fascism and the Second World War.

Hegel and German Public Law Nathaniel Boyd, University of York, UK Nathaniel Boyd’s pathbreaking book argues that Hegel’s political thought was shaped by German public law. This tradition of legal discourse, especially through its imperial tradition, was crucial to European modernity, influencing foundational philosophical concepts such as sovereignty, the state and the diverse legal systems that emerged from them. Hegel and German Public Law examines the impact of Johann Jacob Moser, Johann Stephan Pütter and Johann Christian von Majer on Hegel’s intellectual development. It reveals how the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire informed his early speculative system and constitutional theory. In doing so, Boyd extends our understanding of Hegel's relation to European legal and political thought while offering an original interpretive framework for Hegel’s absolute idealism and unfolding institutional theory of the state. Popes and Papal Rome, 1503-1655 The Theatre of the World

Toby Osborne, Durham University, UK Popes and Papal Rome, 1503-1655 is the first book-length account of the early modern papal court in English. As well as bringing together art historical, social, and political studies in several languages, it contains a wealth of primary source material, such as advice manuals for cardinals and aspiring courtiers, accounts of Roman festivals, reports of visiting ambassadors and news reports from Rome deposited in the Vatican library. The book argues that during the 16th and 17th centuries, popes were conscious to varying degrees of their responsibilities to conserving and enhancing the status of the monarchy as something larger than themselves as individuals or their families, and as such they exhibited some characteristics of dynastic monarchies. This open access book maps the invention of the refugee and uncovers their impact on local, regional, and transnational politics. With case studies ranging from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean Basin, Refugee Politics in Early Modern Europe traces how refugees transformed the European continent. Topics explored include: the discursive strategies of exiles to distinguish themselves from other migrants; the role of displaced people in forging humanitarian networks; and the agency of religious minorities in migration management and imperialism. Food, Scarcity and Power in Southeastern Europe during the Second World War Edited by Paolo Fonzi, University of Eastern Piedmont, Italy, Sabine Rutar, Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies, Germany & Xavier Bougarel, CETOBAC, France The experience of all occupied countries during the Second World War was characterised by severe material shortages. Food, most noticeably, became a scarcity in everyday life; and that food grew into a major stake for all political groups at this time. This book shines a much-needed spotlight on the political role of food in Southeastern Europe from 1939 to 1945. Controlling food was a key strategy adopted by all actors – be they occupiers, state institutions, resistance organizations, international humanitarian organizations or private interest groups – in substantiating their bid for power. As a predominantly agrarian area with a substantial peasant population, investigating this topic is particularly poignant for Southeastern Europe. Milk in Spain and the History of Diet Change

The Political Economy of Dairy Consumption since 1950 Fernando Collantes, University of Oviedo, Spain In barely three generations the Spanish diet has changed beyond recognition. The traditional concerns around nutritional health and scarcity have been mostly left behind, but they have given way to new problems linked to excess. In this book Fernando Collantes shows how the dairy industry has been central to this societal shift. From widespread calcium deficiency in the 1950s to the more recent, and controversial, turn to highly processed foods, it provides a recent history of diet change in Spain. Probing the reasons behind why this shift has occurred, and how, it shows that when it comes to food society, politics, economics and the law are intrinsically linked. Taking the reader beyond the world of food, Milk in Spain and the History of Diet Change combines qualitative and Food in Modern History: Traditions quantitative methods to position diet change within the broader debate on consumer society and ‘the good life’. Pornographers, Hacks, and Blackmailers in Interwar France Obscene Reading and Writing in the Third Republic H.G. Cocks, University of Nottingham, UK After the 1881 declaration of press freedom, France enjoyed a golden age of print, arguably up until the 1950s. This book shines a much-needed light on one of the key elements of France’s new literary age: that being the production of ‘pornography’ of all kinds. H.G. Cocks reveals how publishers and writers, both mainstream and clandestine, tried to cash in on the vogue for erotic literature which surfaced at the time. Though the vast majority of what was produced was no more than risqué or saucy, Cocks shows that this was seen as far more dangerous than frank sexual imagery, as it was mostly legal and within the range of the ordinary reader. Pornographers, Hacks, and Blackmailers in Interwar France reflects on how, as a result of this gold rush for what one writer called the ‘faux obscene’, a great deal of writing, journalism, and quite a few literary and even political careers were supported by the writing of ‘pornography’. For some, this new wave of indecent literature seemed to be sapping the morale of the Republic, while for others it was simply part of the creative literary and journalistic ferment of the period. In that sense, Cocks convincingly argues, the pornographic became part of the curious mixture of cultural energy and malaise that enveloped the struggling French democracy.

A Revolution in Colour

Natural Dyes and Dress in Europe, c. 1400-1800 Edited by Giorgio Riello, University of Warwick, UK, Maria Hayward, University of Southampton, UK & Ulinka Rublack, Cambridge University, UK This major volume aims to re-colour the European world of dress, c.1300-1800. New dyes created one of the most important visual experiences of the period, yet their story has been side-lined by a focus on visual experiences shaped by the high arts. Meanwhile, theatrical productions and period films still abound with broad assumptions about the growing dominance of black clothing for elites during the period, while ordinary people are imagined having worn coarse greys and bleached garments. This volume presents clear evidence that even the clothing of the middle classes could be much more expensive than paintings, and that coloured clothing and accessories were ubiquitous across society. Contributors shed new light on the economic, environmental, and cultural dimensions of colour in dress. The Age of Liutprand

Dynamics of Power in Eighth-Century Italy Christopher Heath, Independent Scholar, UK The Age of Liutprand provides a thematic analysis of Lombard Italy in the pivotal early part of the 8th century. It surveys the crucial role and rule of Liutprand [712-44], the powerful and effective Lombard king. By restoring this successful exemplar of Lombard kingship to the centre of events and developments in the Italian peninsula, this book pulls together all the pertinent evidence for a ‘new’ kingship in Lombard Italy that used a sophisticated set of strategies to enhance, deepen and expand its effectiveness. In presenting an evaluation of Italy on the cusp of dramatic change, this book explains how not only the kingship of Liutprand, but also his legal reforms and his relationships with the Church and neighbouring peoples all contributed to a model of kingship successfully and subsequently deployed by Charlemagne and his successors later in the 8th century. The Observations of Gilles le Bouvier

A Medieval Herald’s View of Europe and its Neighbouring Lands Edited by Gideon Brough, The Open University, UK & Sophie Patrick Translated from the medieval French, this book is a landmark English-language version of the work of Gilles le Bouvier. As the senior herald to King Charles VII, the monarch on the French throne as they advanced to victory in the Hundred Years’ War between England, France and their allies, Gilles le Bouvier was close to the king during a decisive, formative period in France’s history, as well as being a well-known figure from the period. The Observations of Gilles le Bouvier thus delivers a rare glimpse of a singular medieval worldview, offered through the constrained voice of a skilled diplomat carefully and occasionally sharing his opinions to audiences composed of his social superiors. Early Modern Europe Facts and Fictions

Brian Jeffrey Maxson, East Tennessee State University, USA Many myths about early modern Europe originated in the 19th and 20th centuries and continue to appear today across popular media. In recent years, such popular documentaries and television shows as Game of Thrones have tended to reinforce what we think we know about the world during the early modern period. This work uses primary sources to interrogate popular beliefs about early modern Europe and reveal the true story behind such movements and events as the Scientific Revolution, the Crusades, and the European witch hunts. The History of Ukraine Paul Kubicek, Oakland University, USA The Russia-Ukraine war that began in 2022 turned the world's attention on Ukraine, the second-largest country in Europe and one of the leading global exporters of wheat and other valuable commodities. Though some Russian leaders have long denied and continue to reject Ukrainian sovereignty, this book presents a comprehensive picture of Ukraine that is both intertwined with and distinct from Russian history. From its days as Kyivan Rus and its inclusion in the Russian Empire, to the Euromaidan demonstrations and the outbreak of war with Russia, Ukraine, as this book demonstrates, has developed its own identity, territory, and culture.

SUNNIE RUCKER-CHANG, Associate Professor, The Ohio State University, USA ‘In this excellent book, Avrutin makes an important contribution to understanding the current political and intellectual climate in Russia.’ ADRIENNE EDGAR, Professor of History, University of California, USA Since its first publication in 2022, Racism in Modern Russia has become a key text for understanding the role that race has played in Russian, Soviet, and post-Soviet history and politics. Analyzing a wide range of printed and visual sources, this timely accessible volume marks the first serious attempt to understand the history of racialization over a span of 150 years. A brilliant examination of the complexities of racism, Eugene M. Avrutin’s panoramic book asks powerful questions about inequality and privilege, denigration and belonging, power and policy, the creation of exclusionary boundaries in everyday life, and the complex historical links between race, whiteness, and geography.

A Social History of the Russians and their Army since 1690 Roger R. Reese, Texas A&M University, USA This book skilfully probes the conflicted relationship that the Russian peoples have had with their army, most often seeing service as a burden to the individual and family, yet a necessary one to defend the interests of the nation/empire. Roger R. Reese reflects on the fact that even from before its formal institutionalization by Peter I, military service and the army as an institution have not been held in high regard by the Russian peoples, except briefly in exceptional circumstances. Reese examines, illustrates, and explains the varying relationships and expectations of all involved in military service — in their own words wherever possible. From the middle, it shows the expectations and behaviors of army leaders, from ensigns to generals and how they related to each other, their soldiers, and civilians. While at the bottom, the book examines the expectations, behaviors, and feelings about service of the enlisted men. Outside the army, civilian attitudes toward the military are probed to reveal what they envisaged from the military, their willingness or unwillingness to serve, and their views of the army as an institution — views that ranged from seeing it as an oppressive force in the hands of the state to a symbol of patriotism. Throughout, this volume emphasizes the agency of all members of society and the army and the degree to which they used it in their interests or in the interest of the army or the state.

Women, Gardens, and Agency in Imperial Russia Empress Maria Feodorovna's Pavlovsk Park Ekaterina Heath, University of Sydney, Australia This book draws on the rich historical record of the Russian royal court to demonstrate how green spaces have been used as an instrument of diplomatic and political influence. Ekaterina Heath convincingly argues that parks like Pavlovsk are a fruitful new primary source, here revealing the previously obscured evidence of women’s political activities. In 19th-century Russia, green spaces gave women voice and agency, frequently taken away from them by the patriarchal power structures. Women, Green Spaces and the Politics of Empowerment in Imperial Russia challenges the preceding narratives of these structures as being solely masculine. It also argues for the need to consider consorts in the analysis of political life at the Russian court. Their soft power strategies were deployed through their gardens, the main tool of political propaganda in the long 18th century. She explores the strategies used by Empress Maria Fedorovna to influence Catherine II and Paul I to maintain her access to power in a precarious political environment. Indeed the era addressed by the volume is widely acknowledged as a time in which the Free Churches enjoyed a height in popular adherence across much of British society, rivalling and often eclipsing the ‘Establishment’; the book therefore provides a vital understanding of a previously neglected and yet critical dimension of Britain’s relationship with peace and conflict in the 20th century.

Westminster’s first stage of empire-building began in 1717 with the systematic transportation of British convicts to the American colonies as a source of labor for British settlers engaged in the plantation economy. Following America’s declaration of independence in 1776, the second stage of Westminster’s empire-building shifted to Australia in 1786. stage of empire-building with the acquiring of Penang. By 1824, the colonies of Malacca (Melaka) and Singapore were acquired from the Dutch following the 1824 Anglo-Dutch treaty. Together with Penang, Malacca (Melaka) and Singapore became known as the Straits Settlements colonies. This book adopts an empirical approach based on primary and archival sources and the focus on empire-building provides an analytical lens into how Westminster structured and designed an empire built on the foundation of taxation. The paramount emphasis in Westminster was on creating profitable and modernized colonies dominated by ‘‘British subjects’’ and colonies that were connected to Westminster within Westminster’s imperial web. The colonies were part of Westminster’s ‘‘taxation network’’ within a wider ‘‘taxation archipelago’’.

The Oxford University Socratic Club, 1942–1972 A Life

Jim Stockton Through a comprehensive account of the Socratic Club's history, Jim Stockton draws focus to the significant role that the club played in shaping mid-twentieth century philosophical and theological debate. Although the Socratic Club is most often identified with its first club president, C. S. As an inter-disciplinary forum, with a preference for theological and philosophical arguments, the club’s history is a microcosm of the debates that occurred between many of the more widely recognized intellectuals of the previous century. American Presidents and the Bible Carl J. Richard The religious beliefs of America’s leaders and the role of religion in public life have long captivated the American public. In this book, historian Carl J. Richard looks at the many ways that the Bible has influenced America’s leaders in their personal and political lives. With chapters organized thematically, Richard discusses the educational system, familial influences, church experiences, and religious revivals that have immersed presidents in the Bible; their lifelong engagement with Scripture; their biblically-infused political rhetoric; their powerful belief in a divine Providence that protected them and guided their nation; their resultant belief in the power of prayer; their belief in God-given rights and spiritual equality; their belief in a national mission to advance the cause of liberty across the globe; their belief in the excellence of Christian ethics and in the necessity of religion to the survival and success of republican government; their belief in an afterlife; their religious UK April 2025 • US April 2025 460 Pages • 15 BW Photos HB 9798881806330 • £38.00 / $50.00 ePDF 9798881859855 • £34.20 / $45.00 ePub 9798881806347 • £34.20 / $45.00 Rowman & Littlefield

Rebels at the Gates

The Confederacy's Final Gamble and the Battle to Save Washington Robert P. Watson Rebels at the Gate chronicles an intriguing series of events that nearly changed American history. In the last full year of the Civil War, Washington, DC came within hours of being invaded and Lincoln within inches of being shot. During the summer of 1864, General Ulysses Grant was laying siege to Petersburg (near Richmond), deploying every available Union soldier in an effort to end the bloody war once and for all. His counterpart, General Robert E. Lee and his famed Army of Northern Virginia, were trapped inside Richmond, and recognized that the Confederate capital would fall. Lee knew Grant, and understood that he would never stop attacking until he had Richmond. It was then that the southern commander hatched a desperate and bold plan to save the Confederacy and perhaps bring the war to an end… but on the UK May 2025 • US May 2025 256 Pages • 11 b/w photos; 3 maps HB 9798881807337 • £30.00 / $36.00 ePDF 9798881857516 • £27.00 / $32.40 ePub 9798881807344 • £27.00 / $32.40 Rowman & Littlefield

The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965

The 1960s Cultural Revolution

Michael C. LeMay, California State University-San Bernardino, USA

John C. McWilliams, Penn State University

The United States, often described as a nation of immigrants, has the most diverse population in the world. Immigration remains one of the most complex and contentious political, cultural, and social issues in the country. Much of today’s policy stems from the Immigration and Naturalization Act of 1965, championed by President John F. Kennedy to establish a new preference system for legal immigration.

This highly readable and valuable resource revisits the personalities and events that sparked the cultural revolutions synonymous with the 1960s. It considers the forces that shaped the decade and made it a unique era, beginning with an introductory historical overview that provides context and perspective.

Women's lives improved only through the concerted action of several generations of activists, whose work lies at the center of this volume. This book traces women's changing relationships to family, work, education, government, and sexuality from 1945 through the 2016 election. A Life in American History

An illuminating historical biography for students and scholars alike, this book gives readers insight into the life and times of Booker T. Washington. Booker T. Washington was an integral figure in mid-19th to early-20th century America who successfully transitioned from a life of slavery and poverty to a position among the Black elite. This book highlights Washington's often overlooked contributions to the African and African American experience, particularly his support of higher education for Black students through fundraising for Fisk and Howard universities, where he served as a trustee. A vocal advocate of vocational and liberal arts alike, Washington eventually founded his own school, the Tuskegee Institute, with a well-rounded curriculum to expand opportunities and encourage free thinking for Black students. While Washington was sometimes viewed as a "great accommodator" by his critics for working alongside wealthy, white elites, he quietly advocated for Black teachers and students as well as for desegregation. This book will offer readers a clearly written, fully realized overview of Booker T. Washington and his legacy.

The United States and the Ends of Empire

Decolonization, Hierarchy, and World Order since 1776 Sean T. Byrnes, Western Governors University, USA Few topics are more important to understanding the origins of the modern world than decolonization, and few countries have played a more important role in that history than the United States. Through a lively narrative history that ranges across four centuries, Byrnes reveals how the process of ending and replacing empires defined the American relationship to the world from the colonial era to the present. Despite the egalitarian rhetoric of the American Revolution, hierarchies born of the imperial age—and defined by ideas about race, capitalism, and civilization —fundamentally shaped American views of who was entitled to sovereignty and when. Therefore, far from building a world of “Westphalian” sovereign equality, the United States instead manipulated, expanded, and then attempted to dominate New Approaches to International History UK April 2026 • US April 2026 320 Pages • 24 bw illus HB 9781350341661 • £65.00 / $90.00 PB 9781350341678 • £21.99 / $29.95 ePDF 9781350341692 • £19.79 / $26.95 ePub 9781350341685 • £19.79 / $26.95 Bloomsbury Academic

globe spanning structures of wealth and power that served the few at the expense of the many. From early interactions with Native Americans and a decolonizing Latin America, to efforts to bolster global hierarchies after the World Wars and influence the postcolonial “Third World”, The United States and the Ends of Empire, tells the story of a US that may not always have embraced formal empire but nevertheless still sought to organize the world in imperial ways.

The Atlantic Alliance in the Long 20th Century A Modern History of US-European Relations Alessandra Bitumi Reflecting on the tensions between identity and alterity, which have informed the relationship between Europe and the United States since the colonial era, The Atlantic Alliance in the Long 20th Century takes a transnational approach to situate Euro-American history within a global context and provide an understanding of how the Atlantic alliance has been built, maintained and challenged. Centring on the formation of “Atlantica”, a political and security community that emerged after World War II, it raises critical questions about the nature and manifestation of American hegemony in Western Europe; what were the foundational pillars of this community, and how did the balance of power evolve within it? relations and European integration, it asks how the EU and EC fitted into this Atlantic community. In examining the tensions between Atlanticism and Europeanism, and whether their approaches were independent or convergent, Bitumi sets out what this means for contemporary relations today. Arguing that the three foundational pillars of the Atlantic order- democracy, deregulated capitalism and cosmopolitan internationalism- have faced significant strain since the 2008 financial crisis, this book reflects on the origins of this crisis and the challenge it poses to the ongoing unity and cohesion of the Atlantic Alliance.

Socialism, Internationalism, and Development in the Third World Envisioning Modernity in the Era of Decolonization

Edited by Su Lin Lewis, University of Bristol, UK & Nana Osei-Opare, Rice University, USA In the wake of colonial and racial exploitation, political leaders, technocrats, activists, and workers across the Third World turned to socialism to offer a new vision of post-colonial development. In following these actors, the contributions to this open access volume show that “development” was not merely exported from North to South: people across the Global South collaborated with each other while engaging with a diversity of socialist ideas, from European Fabianism and Marxism to tailored African, Asian, and Latin American models. They led debates on race and inequality from the 1920s and 1930s and spearheaded local, regional, and internationalist efforts to re-envision modernity by the 1950s and 1960s. By examining the limitations and legacies of socialist development initiatives in and across the Third World, Socialism, Histories of Internationalism

Archives and Emotions

International Dialogues Across Past, Present, and Future Edited by Ilaria Scaglia & Valeria Vanesio WINNER OF THE SOCIETY OF AMERICAN ARCHIVISTS’ WALDO GIFFORD LELAND AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE AND USEFULNESS IN ARCHIVAL HISTORY, THEORY, AND PRACTICE 2025 Archives and Emotions argues, at its most fundamental level, that emotions matter and have always mattered to both the people whose histories are documented by archives and to those working with the documents these contain. This is the first study to put archivists and historians—scholars and practitioners from different settings, geographical provenance, and stages of career—in conversation with one another to examine the interplay of a broad range of emotions and archives, traditional and digital, from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries across national and disciplinary borders. Drawing on methodologies from the history of emotions and critical archival studies, this book provides an original analysis of interconnected themes through a selected number of case studies. Its main message is that critically investigating the history and mechanics of emotions—including their suppression and exclusion—also being conscious of their effects on people and societies is essential to understanding how archives came to hold deep civic and ethical implications for both present and future.

Child, Family, State

Adoption in Germany, 1900-2021 Roland Spickermann This book explores how adoption evolved in Germany’s turbulent twentieth century, experiencing both drastic changes and unexpected continuities. The history of adoption in twentieth-century Germany has been dramatic and complex. The Weimar Republic’s assumption of responsibility for children’s welfare in 1922 empowered state authorities to regulate private adoption agencies, to set up their own public adoption offices, and to require prospective adoptive parents to prove their competence to social workers. These policies subsequently allowed nazis, communists, and democrats to frame adoption policies to match their social and political goals and values. changing criteria for a family’s or child’s suitability for adoption, abduction, international adoption, and even European integration all came into play, empowering authorities to define, regulate and sometimes even forbid adoptive relationships to that end. The evolution of German adoption and German society reflected each other, showing both fundamental changes and unexpected continuities, and deepening our understanding of both.

The Post-Imperial Turkish State and Islam, 1923-1950 A Complicated Relationship

BESTAMI S. BILGIÇ & Tuba Bilgiç The period between 1923-1950 is seen as the golden age of secularism in the Turkish Republic, but how true is this? The Post-Imperial Turkish State and Islam, 1923-1950 revisits the relationship between the state and Islam in Turkey during this period, arguing that it was shaped and complicated by a post-imperial trauma that manifested in almost all parts of political and social life. Using extensive Turkish and English language government documents, the authors argue that this was neither a golden age for secularism, nor a dark age for Islam in Turkey. Instead, they reveal how the Turkish government’s relationship with Islam was shaped by three processes of negotiation. Biobibliographical Studies, Volume 42 Edited by Elizabeth Baigent, University of Oxford, UK & André Reyes Novaes, Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Geographers is a collection of studies on individuals who have made major contributions to the development of geography and geographical thought. Volume 42 of Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies explores how individual geographers have interacted with and shaped institutions throughout their careers. Rather than focusing solely on institutions themselves, this volume examines how geographers have used institutional frameworks to advance their practices and how they have intertwined their knowledge production with both academic and non-academic settings. Through examples from diverse contexts, including Germany, Brazil, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, it highlights how institutions can act simultaneously as gatekeepers and obstacles, as well as enablers and Geographers

The volume is organised into four main themes: inter-institutional mobility, institution building, geography beyond formal institutions, and links between academia and social movements. Together, these biographies reveal geography as a discipline shaped by fluid boundaries between institutions, individuals, and society. The collection highlights the mutual constitution of structure and agency, demonstrating how geographers not only inhabit institutions but also reconstruct, reinterpret, and transcend them to broaden the scope and social relevance of geographical knowledge.

state of Uruguay in 1828. Like other Latin American countries, it struggled with state formation. Then, a major change occurred at the end of the nineteenth century: policies following trends of modernization drastically overhauled the nation’s economic and social infrastructure and a national identity emerged in poetry and the arts. This book dives into the presidency of José Batlle y Ordóñez, the country’s involvement in World War II, and its economic and political collapse and eventual military seizure of the government in 1973. In 1985, the dictatorship reluctantly left power, and the country transitioned to its original democratic values. Social welfare programs, green energy programs unheard of in South America, and progressive policies flourish into the twenty-first century.

Historical Dictionary of Venezuela Tomás Straka, Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, Virgilio Armas, Universidad Católica Andrés Bello & Esther Mobilia, Unviersidad Católica Andrés Bello The fourth edition of the Historical Dictionary of Venezuela offers a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of one of the most complex, interesting, and vibrant countries in Latin America. Beyond what appears in the news or the facile explanations of political factions, Venezuelan history holds a wealth of knowledge that is largely unknown. With worldrenowned figures such as Simón Bolívar, the largest oil reserves in the world, and enormous crises such as the one experienced between 2016 and 2022, Venezuela is a country of contrasts, great achievements, and great problems. It is not surprising that it was the country where magical realism was invented.

Juan Perón’s Anti-Imperialist Geopolitics A New Order for the Cold War World

Robert D. Koch, Independent Scholar, Portugal Using a blend of global, intellectual and cultural history, this book explores the geopolitics of Juan Perón and their relationship to, and impact on, the international history of the mid-20th century. Beginning with Perón’s formative years, it analyzes the concepts that helped shape his anti-imperialist views and traces these ideas over decades from his time in the Argentine Army through his rise to power, downfall, and eventual death in 1974. Dissecting how notions of imperialism, nationalism and decolonization fueled his ideology and approach to foreign policy, Juan Perón’s Anti-Imperialist Geopolitics takes a long-term approach to understand his geopolitical evolution over time. While Peronism has continued to be an influential movement in Argentine politics and remains a lively research topic, Perón’s geopolitics have received scant attention despite their significance to his popularity and legacy. This book offers a corrective to this, situating Peronism, Argentina, and Latin America on the international stage during the 20th century. The Green Sahara

Regaining Paradise in the Face of Climate Change John Gaudet A thoughtful exploration of how the Sahara Desert can be returned to its former glory as a green paradise while actively combating climate change. A green Sahara is something the world has not seen since 10,000 BC when the Sahara was a wet, lush region. By 3,000 BC though the climate changed, the rains stopped, and the ancient green Sahara dried into today’s desert. It was the victim of a phenomenon that reminds us today of global climate warming. But what if we could reverse the desertification of the Sahara, and bring back the green paradise of days passed? In The Green Sahara: Regaining Paradise in the Face of Climate Change, John Gaudet explores the process by which climate change in ancient times converted a green paradise into an arid desert land, highlighting parallels to what is UK February 2026 • US February 2026 320 Pages • 31 bw illus HB 9798881808556 • £25.99 / $36.00 ePDF 9798881867485 • £23.39 / $32.40 ePub 9798881808563 • £23.39 / $32.40 Bloomsbury Academic

happening in our time. But he also illuminates how an intense effort to create green energy is being made by several Saharan countries to build and operate enormous solar and wind farms. As a result, a wave of green energy generated in the Sahara, the largest desert on earth, is about to swamp the world, and could lead to a regreening of the Sahara Desert. Covering just 20% of the Sahara Desert with wind turbines and solar panels would generate almost five times more energy than is currently needed worldwide. Gaudet’s manifesto demonstrates how climate change induced by man actually has the power to save the world and restore a beautiful piece of ancient history.

Why are we in Okinawa? A History of Violence Jon Mitchell In this compelling history, award-winning journalist, Jon Mitchell, traces how the islands of Okinawa have been annexed by Japan, occupied by the United States and now menaced by China. In response, Okinawans have developed one of the world’s most resilient – yet overlooked – pacifist movements. Once a wealthy kingdom, Okinawa was seized by Japan in the late-19th century and, after World War II, abandoned to US colonial rule. For twenty-seven years, residents were denied civil and labor rights, but their non-violent resistance grew so strong that, in 1972, they forced the return of the islands to Japanese control. Today, thirty-one US bases dominate a land mass smaller than Rhode Island and Okinawans remain Japan’s poorest people. Tensions are rising as China questions Japan's control of Okinawa and fires missiles into nearby seas. Angry at

Bihar in Colonial India

Region in the Making of a Nation Aryendra Chakravartty, Stephen F. Austin State University, USA This book points to the indispensability of the province in shaping and strengthening ideas of the nation in 20th century India. Focusing on the region of Bihar, it shows how its distinctively regional identity was not in opposition to colonial politics or nationalist sentiments, but was itself a product of colonial and national imaginings. The separation of Bihar, hailed by some as the ‘royal province’ of India and the cradle of Indian cultural and civilization, realigned the region not as ‘backward’ and ‘provincial’ but as the core of an Indian national imagination. Yet it also sparked multiple, contrasting narratives and differences; from questions about territorial realignment, to tensions between Biharis and Bengalis, and the question of language. Transforming the province into a cohesive cultural space was only possible by Critical Perspectives in South Asian invoking the nation and its associated historical and cultural imagination, by memorializing its archaeological past and History documenting its history.

A Cultural History of Insects in Antiquity Edited by Gene Kritsky A Cultural History of Insects in Antiquity covers the period from 1000 BCE to 500 CE. As different cultures expanded so did their interactions with insects, largely seen as vectors of disease and as agricultural and bodily pests. However, as knowledge of insects grew, insect products were developed, notably honey or beeswax as used in food, preservation, medicine, and religious ritual. Insects were feared but were also invested with great power, even sanctity. The jewelry of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome fashioned insects into symbols of the beauty of nature, whilst literary and sacred texts transformed insects into metaphors for fertility and immortality. A Cultural History of Insects in the Medieval Age Edited by Gene Kritsky A Cultural History of Insects in the Medieval Age covers the period from 500 to 1300, a time when the uses and value of insect products greatly increased. The explosion in writing in the Middle Ages relied on inks, dyes, and waxes actively produced by insects or extracted from their crushed bodies. A Cultural History of Insects in the Renaissance Edited by Sherilyn G.F. Smith A Cultural History of Insects in the Renaissance covers the period from 1300 to 1600, examining the profound impact of insects on the flowering of culture. In the early part of this period, the unprecedented number of deaths caused by the Plague – spread in part by fleas – encouraged the later rise of a middle class. Meanwhile, much of the wealth which funded Renaissance politics and patronage came from trade in honey, silk, and insect dyes, notably cochineal, one of the most valuable exports from the New World. Peterson A Cultural History of Insects in the Modern Age covers the period from 1920 to the present, a time of tremendous scientific advances in our understanding of insects and their place in the natural world. The age ushered in an optimism fueled by the power of science and technology to improve the human condition and included stunning achievements in managing insect pests in the first half of the century. Today, although insects are recognised as cultural symbols of natural harmony and as bellwethers of ecological damage, our irrational fears continue, transforming insects into metaphors of invasion, alienation, and decay across literature, art, music, film, and political rhetoric. A Cultural History of Mathematics in Antiquity Edited by Michael N. Fried A Cultural History of Mathematics in Antiquity covers the period from 3000 BCE to 500 CE, exploring the great richness and diversity of mathematical thought and activity across the ancient world. Our modern notion of mathematics – and the word itself – was established by Greco-Roman culture. However, sophisticated forms of what we should call mathematics – number systems, ways of measurement, notation, and formulae – were developed millennia earlier by scribes in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Iraq. Mathematics proved just as invaluable in trade, taxation, astronomy, engineering, war, and agriculture in antiquity as it does now. A Cultural History of Mathematics in the Early Modern Age Edited by Volker Remmert & Jeanne Peiffer A Cultural History of Mathematics in the Early Modern Age covers the period from 1450 to 1687, a time marked by increasing interplay between science and society. Classical writing on science which had been lost and Arabic thinking which was new both percolated into the West, fertilizing new ideas and giving birth to what has been called the “Scientific Revolution”. From artisanal workshops to academic institutions, mathematicians thrived. And, with the development of symbolic algebra and infinitesimal calculus, mathematics became one of the major tools for describing and understanding the world. A Cultural History of Mathematics in the Eighteenth Century Edited by Maarten Bullynck A Cultural History of Mathematics in the Eighteenth Century covers the period from 1687 to 1800. Advances in the use of calculus opened up both nature and society to mathematical analysis, while mathematical skills became increasingly valuable in ongoing power struggles between nation-states. This redefined the role of mathematics in many professional occupations, encouraging greater numerical literacy and better mathematical education. Building on advances in both analysis and physics, mathematics helped shape the ideas of the Enlightenment. A Cultural History of Mathematics in the Nineteenth Century Edited by Tom Archibald & David E. Widening access to schools improved mathematical literacy amongst the public, while the growth of universities encouraged the formation of national societies of professional mathematicians. Technological innovations, such as wireless telegraphy and aeronautics, spawned new fields in applied mathematics, just as specialists in pure mathematics produced a huge body of knowledge, which almost defied classification. A Cultural History of Western Music in Antiquity Edited by Pauline A. LeVen & Sean A. Gurd A Cultural History of Western Music in Antiquity covers the period from 850 BCE to 500 CE, a time when multiple musics grew and spread in a glorious polyphony of styles. Music became the beneficiary of a wide variety of practices, from largescale public patronage to sophisticated theorization, from the design of new instruments to the medical enhancement of the voice, from the invention of new scales and rhythms to the creation of a remarkably precise notation system. Though much of this polymetric and microtonal music was later lost, the innovations of the ancient Greeks and Romans established new ways of conceiving and practicing music. A Cultural History of Western Music in the Renaissance Edited by Jeanice Brooks & Richard Freedman A Cultural History of Western Music in the Renaissance covers the period from 1400 to 1650, examining structures of identity and the delicate relationships between self, society, and sound. What did listeners and creators want from music in the Renaissance? How were the forms and meanings of music shaped by the social, political, and technological transformations of the time? Music was put to many uses in this epoch: as an instrument of power in a changing political order; as an aid to religious and philosophical speculation; and as a tool for constructing emotional communities and regimes. And music itself was transformed, both by new technologies, such as print, and by the expansion of travel and trade.

A Cultural History of Western Music in the Age of Enlightenment Edited by David R M Irving, ICREA & Institució Milà i Fontanals de Recerca en Humanitats, CSIC, Spain & Estelle Joubert A Cultural History of Western Music in the Age of Enlightenment covers the period from 1650 to 1790, a time of radical, social, and cultural transformation. Alongside the splendor of performances in courts and opera houses, novel forms of musical culture – such as public concerts and music journalism – emerged in many urban cultures. Advances in science encouraged the development and use of new musical sounds and technologies. Increased exploration and trade enhanced knowledge of other cultures, but the expansion of colonialism and slavery had far-reaching repercussions for Western music. At the same time, the Enlightenment’s philosophical focus on what it means to be human recast the purpose of music: sound became the expression of the self.

Julius Caesar

A Reference Guide to His Life and Works Tom Stevenson, University of Sydney Gaius Julius Caesar is one of the most influential men to have ever lived. He is inescapable as a figure of power and dominance and may be experienced directly and indirectly in myriad ways. Every day, people around the world measure their leaders against him, whether consciously or unconsciously. Political and military leaders may be praised or condemned for similarities to him. Even the Pope, as pontifex maximus, holds a position that evokes Caesar’s religious role in ancient Rome. Students and others read his accounts of the Gallic War and the Civil War and wonder about the contents of lost speeches and letters and other works. His calendar continues to govern our lives as thoroughly as any idea or institution possibly could. His portraits are somehow recognizable to those who have never studied them formally. His name evokes feelings of awe in people who have little detailed knowledge about why that should be so. His assassination on the Ides (15th) of March 44 BCE is repeated continuously on stages in every corner of the globe.

Elected in 1932, amidst the Great Depression, he launched the New Deal, a series of laws and programs designed to broaden the federal government’s authority over the economy and provide Americans with a social safety net. Facing the rise of fascism in Europe and Asia, Roosevelt forged an alliance with the United Kingdom, U.S.S.R., and China that fought a grueling and ultimately victorious war against Germany, Italy, and Japan. Daily Life of Women in Chaucer's England Jennifer C. Edwards, Manhattan University, USA Providing an indispensable resource for students and scholars studying the history of medieval women and gender, this book provides a comprehensive depiction of women's lives in the 14th and 15th centuries. The late medieval period in England was one rich with opportunities for women, who played fundamental roles in family businesses as well as in the peasant community and economy, and who wrote letters, created autobiographies, and documented their spiritual journeys. Their lives fit into a pattern of seasonal celebrations and rituals shaped, for the majority of women, by work, marriage, and motherhood. The text further considers status distinctions, then shifts to experiences that affected all women, such as the ritual year, disease, food and drink, sex or celibacy, and religion. By providing an overview of the history of English women and gender in the 14th and 15th centuries, the book provides a background suitable for students as well as for academics beginning work in this field. Resisting Nazism

True Stories of Resistance to the World's Most Dangerous Ideology, from 1920 to the Present Luke Berryman Nazism has always faced resistance: from the German artists who caricatured the Nazis in the 1920s, or the man who infiltrated the SS to try and expose the Holocaust in the 1940s, or the people who uncovered former Nazis as part of a groundbreaking documentary in the 1970s. Resisting Nazism is the first book to connect such stories, painting a vivid picture of resistance to hatred and extremism across the generations. Built on original interviews with the people involved, their families, and their colleagues, as well as deep research, this book is a response to far-right populist threats and antisemitism that increasingly resemble the Nazi past. Each of its twelve chapters tells a different story of resistance. Sometimes, these stories involve incredible daring and enormous risk – but they also show that resistance can begin with something as simple as writing your ideas down or showing solidarity with the oppressed. The Transformation of Eurasianism in Soviet Intellectual Milieu, 1950s–1990s Blurring the Lines and Establishing Artificial Continuity Michal Racyn, Masaryk University This book examines the transformation of Eurasianist historiographic and historiosophic concepts within the Soviet postStalinist intellectual milieu. By researching the most understated phase in the development of Eurasianism between the late 1950s and the early 1990s, Michal Racyn follows the reception of the initial historiographic and historiosophic concepts of interwar Eurasianist movement formulated by the influential intellectuals involved in the transformation of Eurasianism before the dissolution of the USSR. Framing Eurasianist ideas in the broader context of Soviet academia and Russian nationalist activity within the USSR, The Transformation of Eurasianism in Soviet Intellectual Milieu, 1950s-1990s introduces the revised concept of trans-Eurasianism and argues that, even though Eurasianism ceased to exist by the mid-1930s as an official movement, in the second half of the 20th century individual Eurasianist concepts did not lose its relevance. Moral Storytelling in 1920s New York, Odessa, and Bombay Sex, Crime, Violence, and Nightlife in the Modern City Mark D. Steinberg, University of Illinois, USA Using public storytelling as driving force, this book explores everyday social moralities relating to stories of sex, crime, violence, and nightlife in the 1920s city space. Focusing on capitalist New York, communist Odessa, and colonial Bombay, Mark D. Steinberg taps in to the global dimension of complex everyday moral anxiety that was prevalent in a vital and troubled decade. Moral Storytelling in 1920s New York, Odessa, and Bombay compares and connects stories of the street in three compelling cosmopolitan port cities. It offers novel insights into significant and varied areas of study, including city life, sex, prostitution, jazz, dancing, gangsters, criminal undergrounds, cinema, ethnic and racial experiences and conflicts, prohibition and drinking, street violence, ‘hooliganism’ and other forms of ‘deviance’ in the contexts of capitalism, colonialism, communism, and nationalism. The book tells the stories of moralizers: empowered and insistent critics of deviance driven to investigate, interpret, and interfere with how people lived and played. Beside them, not always comfortably, were the policemen and journalists who enforced and documented these efforts. It also reveals the histories of women and men, mostly working class and young, who were observed and categorized: those judged to be wayward, disreputable, disorderly, debauched, and wild. Steinberg explores this global culture war and the everyday moral improvisations—shaped by experiences of class, generation, gender, ethnicity, and race—that came with it.

UFOs

A Scientist Explains What We Know (And Don’t Know) Robert Powell Robert Powell, a founding Board member of the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies, has studied the UFO subject for 17 years. His work is encapsulated in UFOs: A Scientist Explains What We Know (And Don’t Know) which provides a scientific rationale for the reality of non-terrestrial craft that are intelligently controlled. Powell begins his book by familiarizing the reader with the history of UFOs and he identifies the more enigmatic and interesting UFO sightings. He examines the characteristics of these sightings that argue against a prosaic explanation: extreme acceleration, electromagnetic interference, bending light, no obvious propulsion mechanisms, and a lack of interaction with the atmosphere. Powell discusses the recent events that have caused our government to change the term from UFO to UAP. Included is information never before released indicating the government possesses not just two videos but five videos from 2015 of UFOs operating in the vicinity of the USS Roosevelt nuclear aircraft carrier. Slavery and Freedom in the Caribbean From Colonialism to Emancipation Gelien Matthews Slavery and Freedom in the Caribbean explores the experiences of the enslaved and their struggle to win freedom in the islands of the Caribbean from the end of the fifteenth century to the nineteenth century when formal emancipation came into effect. Captured for the trans-Atlantic slave trade, Africans endured the Middle Passage from Africa to the Caribbean, sale as the human cargo in the Caribbean, and the development of a servile Caribbean empire by the Spanish, British, French, Dutch, and Danish powers. As the labor force fueling Caribbean colonies, slaves became the backbone of the island economy and culture. Author Gelien Matthews emphasizes the integral role blacks played in loosening the chains of slavery, by forcing their enslavers to make ever-increasing compromises, which ultimately led to the slaves’ total freedom. Taking a unique approach to imperial and international history, the essays in this volume show how security propelled imperial expansion, supported institutions of cooperation, maintained networks of imperial actors and shaped experiences of imperial rule. Biocultural Empire

New Histories of Imperial Lifeworlds Edited by Antoinette Burton, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, Renisa Mawani, University of British Columbia, Canada & Samantha Frost, University of Illinois, USA Human species supremacy is one of the most persistent fictions at work in the field of modern British imperial history today. This open access collection challenges that assumption, and investigates what histories of empire look like if reimagined as the effect of biocultural, chemical and cultural processes, rather than the result of effects by humans that have been visited upon cultural landscapes, fauna and biomes. In understanding the boundaries between human and nonhuman worlds as porous and open to mutual transformation, and foregrounding interspecies interactions, Biocultural Empire seeks to understand the conditions of imperial power, experience and knowledge as a remix of ‘nature’ and ‘culture’. Bringing empire’s ‘biocultural histories’ to the fore, it asks imperial historians to reckon with an interpretative framework which refuses the sovereignty and boundedness of the Empire’s Other Histories UK June 2026 • US June 2026 240 Pages • 10 bw illus HB 9781350451056 • £85.00 / $115.00 PB 9781350451087 • £28.99 / $39.95 ePDF 9781350451063 • £0.00 / $0.00 ePub 9781350451070 • £0.00 / $0.00 Bloomsbury Academic

In-Between Empire

Imperial Exceptionalism, Poland, and Colonial Travel Writing Raymond Patton, City University of New York, USA Exploring how Polish writers positioned themselves as neither colonized nor colonizers, In-Between Empire analyses their literary works on empire during the 19th and 20th centuries to explore how they negotiated their in-between position in the global imperial hierarchy. Leveraging this vantage point, they claimed the unique ability to represent the South to the West, constructing a Polish national identity in conversation with both imperial and anti-imperial currents, and influencing international discourse on colonialism and its legacy. Written at the nexus of historical and literary studies of imperial and colonial discourse, Patton centres Poland and Eastern Europe in debates that have frequently excluded these perspectives. Jewish Revenge and the Holocaust History, Memory, and Imagination

Laura Jockusch, Brandeis University, USA Revenge, argues award-winning author Laura Jockusch, was a ubiquitous coping reaction among European Jews during the Holocaust. It manifested as some acts of violence against Nazi perpetrators and their collaborators as well as revenge fantasies expressed in diaries, letters, last wills, wall inscriptions, songs, and poems. Jockusch reveals how Holocaust survivors—alongside other Europeans—continued this multifaceted engagement with revenge after their liberation from Nazi rule, though some survivors claimed in the decades that followed that revenge was absent among Jews. Jewish Revenge and the Holocaust examines the complexities of Jewish revenge during and after the Holocaust. It shows that, since revenge is a universal human response to atrocity and injustice, neither the claim that Jews were particularly Perspectives on the Holocaust

revenge had many expressions and it fulfilled various functions for the victims and survivors of the Holocaust: a last resort act in face of death; or a coping response in utter powerlessness and despair; or a means to confront and commemorate the traumatic past and to go on living after destruction and loss. Jockusch convincingly contends that, even if most survivors chose to forgo violent revenge for ethical reasons, they nevertheless engaged with the idea of vengeance.

The Jewish Purging of a Small German Town

Personal Recollection, Private Letters, and Oral Testimony Maria R. Boes, West Chester University, USA Through the analysis of 10 oral witness testimonies of local residents and a previously undocumented letter correspondence between a Jewish Holocaust survivor and her gentile friend, The Jewish Purging of a Small German Town provides new insights into how the Nazi persecution of the Jewish people unfolded in small towns and communities around Germany. Incorporating her own personal reflections on growing up in Salmünster, Maria R. Boes uncovers the truth about the Jewish residents who lived there and what happened to them after the Nazis came to power in 1933 – a story which has been silenced and suppressed. Boes charts the town’s unsettling trajectory from a harmonious pre-Nazi local community to an environment where, after UK June 2026 • US June 2026 168 Pages HB 9781350450196 • £85.00 / $115.00 PB 9781350450189 • £28.99 / $39.95 ePDF 9781350450202 • £76.50 / $103.50 ePub 9781350450219 • £76.50 / $103.50 Bloomsbury Academic

initial protracted local resistance, Jewish persecution escalated from the boycotting of stores to physical, fiscal and emotional acts against Jewish residents. The book reveals how this culminated in Jewish residents being purged from the town by 1937 without any paramilitary intervention or outside physical force. This microhistory is an illuminating study of the momentous spectre of Germany’s small towns being at the forefront of successfully fulfilling Nazi aims to remove Jewish residents – driving them out of their homes with the ultimate goal of driving them out of existence.

Baghdad Dispatches

Seeking Home

Jameel Haque

Eva Richter

Framing the U.S. consulate as a central point of analysis, Baghdad Dispatches highlights the experiences of refugees, prisoners of war, and foreign nationals stranded in Ottoman Baghdad.

Seeking Home is a memoir of a childhood in China as a refugee from Nazi Germany during the turbulent years 1934-49. Richter recalls the little-known history of North China’s occupation by the Japanese during the World War II years amid the remnants of a dying British colonialism.

The City of Peace in World War One

A World War II Refugee Childhood in War-Torn China

Jameel Haque examines the history of Ottoman Baghdad during the First World War, drawing on U.S. archival sources to explore the economic, political, and social transformations that shaped the city. It details the humanitarian efforts of Charles Brissel, the U.S. consul who worked between 1914 and 1916 to distribute aid and manage the interests of seventeen different nations. Additionally, the book investigates the challenges faced by American businesses, including Standard Oil, Singer Sewing Company, MacAndrews & Forbes, and Hills Brothers of New York, all of which struggled with wartime requisitions, loss of influence, and financial setbacks. By examining this period, Baghdad Dispatches reevaluates the extent of U.S. imperial engagement in Baghdad before the war, arguing for a more substantial American presence than has previously been recognized.

Women in Allied Naval Intelligence in the Second World War

Beneath Heavy Pines in World War II Louisiana

A Close Secret

Hayley Johnson, Louisiana State University & Sarah Simms

Sarah-Louise Miller

December 7, 1941 changed the lives of thousands of Japanese Americans who became "enemy" in the eyes of the United States government within hours. With Pearl Harbor still smoldering, these men would be arrested and put into the enemy alien internment system. As the study of internment has steadily grown, the information about the confinement sites and ability to piece together the experiences of the men within has remained a challenging task.

Closely examining the work of women in the US and British naval services towards Allied naval intelligence during the Second World War, this book focuses on their contributions during the Battle of the Atlantic and Pacific Naval War, in order to shed new light on arenas of war from which women’s narratives are almost always absent. Including personal testimonies from those involved, and surveying a wide crosssection of different roles, Sarah-Louise Miller analyses the work of women at every level and rank in the US and British naval services, and offers a much wider picture of how they assisted the Allied forces behind closed doors. With exploration of the work of the WRNS and WAVES on developing naval intelligence, this book argues that they played a crucial role in the British and American SIGINT systems, and within programs such as those at Bletchley Park and OP-20-G – therefore directly impacting the organisation and outcome of Anglo-American naval efforts. Including analysis of the development of the modern ‘kill-chain’, Miller also re-evaluates the effect of the ‘combat taboo’, to demonstrate that the WRNS and WAVES were in fact at the cutting edge of the emergence of modern warfare.

The Japanese American Internment Experience at Camp Livingston

Camp Livingston, famous as a site for the Louisiana Maneuvers, holds a darker and less well-known history. From 1942-1943, over 1,000 men of Japanese ancestry were held in this internment camp in the pine forests of central Louisiana. The authors approach this camp's history via the experiences and linkages to and through two families, the Miyamotos and Koharas, who are the beating heart at the center of this saga. Through them, the authors have laid out a historical counter narrative that is part biography and part critical exploration of a forgotten chapter of American history. This book is the first of its kind to focus primarily on exploring Camp Livingston, arguably one of the lesser-known enemy alien internment camps, in depth including its layout, operations, and the daily life and experiences of the internees within.

Imperial Entertainers

Korean Women Performers from Military to Global Stages, 1937–75 Yu Jung Lee Imperial Entertainers: Korean Women Performers from Military to Global Stages, 1937-75 uncovers the untold stories of Korean women performers who navigated successive waves of conflict - from the Pacific War to the Korean and Vietnam Wars - as cultural laborers in military entertainment. The author traces how these women became central figures in a dynamic entertainment market that emerged across the Asia-Pacific region amid U.S. Military expansion. Through extensive archival research and intimate interviews with former performers, this book reveals how these women skillfully balanced multiple roles: representing South Korea's new identity as a free nation, performing "Americanness" for military audiences, and pursuing their own personal and professional aspirations. Moral Superpower in the Cold War

The Soviet Struggle for Human Rights Supremacy, 1964-1991 James Petrie Brown, Independent Scholar This book explores how the Cold War’s ideological conflict was played out through competition over human rights values. As the West feared that the Soviet Union might ‘win’ the Cold war, it shows how they sought to aggressively outflank the USSR on human rights, while the Soviet Union simultaneously attempted to establish itself as a moral superpower, superior to the West. Examining how the Soviet leadership sought to respond to the West’s amplification of prominent Soviet dissidents and global condemnation of their human rights abuses, they in turn depicted left-wing activists in the UK and the US as on par with famous Soviet dissidents in their press. Fleeced

Unraveling the History of Wool and War Trish FitzSimons & Madelyn Shaw Not everything about wool is warm and fuzzy. Wool, for millennia the cold climate textile fiber, has a long relationship to war, both in terms of supporting it and causing it. Wool’s strategic value in wartime, a position it gained over centuries, and contrived shortages of same in the 20th century, have helped drive consumers’ transition to the synthetic fibers that have enabled fast fashion, and as both fiber and cloth are global contemporary pollutants. Fleeced argues that the 19th century advent of southern hemisphere large scale sheep pastoralism and northern hemisphere industrialization of the woolen textile industry allowed - at least in part - the huge armies of the 20th century to exist. World War I represented a fundamental shift in the scale of armies and the kind of wars they fought. The contrived wool shortages of this war had a lasting impact - nations subject to supply chain difficulties began the search for substitutes that led first to the semi-synthetic rayon, and ultimately to the plastic fibers such as polyester and acrylic that dominate today’s world of fast fashion. Each chapter of Fleeced begins with a surprising object, document or image that takes us into this fascinating and previously untold history. Change is not necessarily progress. Fleeced explains how competition for wool in wartime helped create our current unsustainable and environmentally disastrous reliance on petrochemical fibers.

The 2001 U.S.-led war in Afghanistan, launched in response to 9/11, aimed to dismantle Al-Qaeda and topple the Taliban regime. While the initial invasion achieved these goals, the war transformed into a long and costly struggle against insurgents. Despite efforts to build a new Afghan state, the conflict quickly became a stalemate. The 2021 withdrawal by the United States and NATO and the subsequent return to power of the Taliban ended a war with a complex legacy. The protracted conflict reshaped the United States’ role in the world, highlighted the challenges of nation-building, and has left the future of Afghanistan uncertain.

San Francisco Seafood

A History from Ocean to Table Paul Stangl, Western Washington University, US In San Francisco Seafood: A History from Ocean to Table, Paul Stangl traces the development of San Francisco’s fisheries, seafood markets, cookery, and dining culture from the Gold Rush to the 1920s. Migrants from around the world imported fishing techniques and cuisines, then slowly adapted as they came to understand local resources and each other. Newcomers found the tastiest fish through trial and error and assimilated the “best” into a new cuisine. Different ethnic and occupational groups collaborated, fought, and learned from one another as they irreversibly altered the natural world around them. By the end of the First World War, San Francisco’s seafood cuisine scarcely resembled that of the 1850s, due to cultural adaptation, technological advancements, and changes to the natural environment. It was no longer derivative of New England and France, but included influences from the Southern states, Asia, and South America. A Cultural History of Poverty Volumes 1-6

Edited by Steven M. Beaudoin, Centre College, USA and Richard D. Axtell, Centre College, USA What have been the causes and consequences of poverty in society through the ages? How has poverty been portrayed and understood? And how has this understanding differed according to time and place? In a work that spans 2,500 years these ambitious questions are addressed by 55 experts, each contributing their overview of a theme applied to a period in history. With the help of a broad range of case material, they illustrate trends and nuances of the culture of poverty in world history from antiquity to the present. Individual volume editors ensure the cohesion of the whole, and to make it as easy as possible to use, chapter titles are identical across each of the volumes. This gives the choice of reading about a specific period in one of the volumes, or following a theme across history by reading the relevant chapter in each of the six. Themes (and chapter titles) are: defining poverty; poverty, charity, and spirituality; representations of need and want; poverty, race, and ethnicity; poverty and gender; community and exclusion; poverty and economic thought; and poverty and the body politic.
