BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS? A progressive open access model for books BLOOMSBURY OPEN COLLECTIONS is a collective-action approach to funding open access (OA) books. Through this model, we aim to make OA publication available to a wider range of authors by spreading the cost across multiple organisations, while providing additional benefits to participating libraries. By prioritising authors that are often underrepresented in scholarly publishing, including early-career and unaffiliated researchers and those based in/writing about low- and lower-middle- income countries, we hope to engage a more diverse author base, bringing their work to a wider global audience.
THE BOOKS Following the success of the previous three years, in 2026-27 we will continue to offer three collections of 20 titles each in: • African Studies & International Development • Environment & Climate Change • Gender & Sexuality
BENEFITS TO LIBRARIES • Contribute to a progressive OA funding model that aims to make 60 research titles available open access immediately on publication at no cost to the authors • Receive guaranteed perpetual access to the 20 titles in each Open Collection you participate in • Receive 1 year’s access to ~150 backlist titles in related areas for each Open Collection you participate in • Be publicly acknowledged on our website

A Hard Day's Night Samira Ahmed How did a film made to capture a pop phenomenon become an enduring cinematic classic? With warmth, wit and precision, Samira Ahmed reveals how the Beatles’ first film changed both the band themselves and pop music’s relationship with the screen. In a vivid and personal exploration, she shows how this black-and-white gem, shot in a documentary style and brimming with youthful energy, captured Britain at a moment of social transformation, with a portrayal of celebrity, camaraderie and media frenzy that still resonates today. Drawing on her own experience of first discovering the film as a child and going on to work in the television industry, Ahmed shines a spotlight on the craft behind its enduring appeal. With insights from members of the cast and crew, including her own new interviews, Ahmed highlights A Hard Day’s Night’s class and sexual politics, and

if.... Mark Sinker In his compelling study of if.... (1968), starring which stars Malcolm McDowell as an English public school student who leads a guerrilla insurgence, Mark Sinker traces director Lindsay Anderson’s depiction of the progress from repression, conformity and fusty ritual to anarchy and bloody revolt. The film’s title is a sardonic nod to Rudyard Kipling’s most famous poem, while its narrative explores how prankish rebels are groomed to police an Empire. Released at a time of unprecedented student uprisings in Europe and America, if.... provided a peculiarly English perspective on the battle between generations – the perennial war of the romantically passionate against the corrupt, the ugly, the old, and the foolish. Though its emotional surface is authentically anti-authoritarian, its intellectual substance, as Sinker argues, is rooted in a deep familiarity with the symbols of English ruling-class values. In his foreword for this new edition, Mark Sinker considers if.... ’s continuing relevance in respect of two contemporary phenomena (the ghastly commonplace of school shootings; urban terrorism) including the degree to which we somehow continue to feel sympathy toward this small gang of entitled schoolboys. Contemplating director Anderson’s ambivalence towards education, not least the jargons of academic film theory after the 1960s, Sinker reflects on how his own approach to the film was informed by the critical lingua franca of the 1980s music press.

Le Samouraï Daisuke Miyao In this compelling study, Daisuke Miyao explores Jean-Pierre Melville's cult 1967 thriller Le Samouraï, a film that unfolds in a coolly stylised Paris where the paths of a contract killer, Jef Costello (Alain Delon), and the police commissaire pursuing him (François Périer) fatally intersect. Despite its title, Le Samouraï, is not a sword-clashing tale of feudal Japan. Rather, Miyao suggests that the film's philosophical framework draws on both existentialism and the samurai moral philosophy of bushido, or 'the way of the warrior', and considers how these philosophies may help explain Jef Costello's identity crisis and his concluding act of selfannihilation. In a close analysis of Melville's technical and aesthetic decisions, Miyao highlights the film's use of close-ups to BFI Film Classics

Touki Bouki Rosalind Galt, King's College London, UK Djibril Diop Mambéty’s exuberant, inventive and urgent film Touki Bouki (The Journey of the Hyena) (1973) follows a young couple, Mory (Magaye Niang) and Anta (Mareme Niang), who dream of leaving their home in Dakar, Senegal for an imagined better life in Paris. Rosalind Galt’s insightful study analyses Touki Bouki’s cinematic worlds, from its narrative of postcolonial migration to its influence by international film style, both nonetheless grounded in African visual cultures and critical perspectives. Touki Bouki explores the intertwined histories of the postcolonial and the transnational, showing how the aesthetic and political ideas found in the experimentation of cinematic modernisms and New Waves are as African as they are European. Galt’s study interweaves a conceptual framework of world cinema studies and anti/decolonial theory with close analysis of Touki Bouki’s innovative audiovisual forms and its representations of desire and identity in postcolonial Senegal. Providing a detailed reading of the film’s themes and cinematic style, she argues for its classic status and for its long-lasting influence on world cinema.

Beau travail Corinn Columpar, University of Toronto, Canada Beau Travail (1998) is Claire Denis' bold, sensuous masterpiece. Loosely based on Herman Melville’s Billy Budd, Sailor (1924), the film explores the complexities of desire, identity, and power within an all-male group of French Foreign Legionnaires stationed at a coastal outpost in the former colony of Djibouti, in East Africa. The film cemented Denis' position as a leading auteur and visual poet. In this book, Corinn Columpar positions the film as a cinematic bid for freedom. She examines its formal innovations - particularly the use of the gaze, voice, and movement - to explain how Denis produces exhilarating possibilities narratively, affectively, and ideologically, while also situating the film within the histories of art cinema and postcolonial filmmaking. Velvet Goldmine Katherine Reed, California State University, Fullerton, USA It’s 1984, and investigative reporter Arthur Stuart is trying to locate Brian Slade, the glam-rock superstar who staged his own death and vanished from the spotlight ten years earlier. Todd Haynes’s Velvet Goldmine (1998) transforms that mystery into a vivid collage of memory, fantasy and desire, creating an alternative history of rock and a landmark of queer cinema. Velvet Goldmine divided opinion on its release, but Katherine Reed traces how the film’s fans have kept it alive through rewatches, relistens and fan fiction. Reed weaves in the history of the film with close readings of its cinematic references, songs and style. She re-evaluates Velvet Goldmine in light of Haynes’s other films, addresses its fraught production history and its allusions to David Bowie, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop, and the ways in which Haynes reshapes those figures into a new BFI Film Classics UK June 2026 • US June 2026 112 Pages • 60 colour illus PB 9781839027475 • £12.99 / $17.95 ePDF 9781839027499 • £11.69 / $16.15 ePub 9781839027482 • £11.69 / $16.15 British Film Institute

Double Indemnity Richard Schickel Richard Schickel’s study of Billy Wilder’s 1944 noir classic Double Indemnity traces in fascinating detail the genesis and realisation of the film: its literary origins in James M. Cain’s hard-boiled crime novel, the difficult relations between Wilder and his scriptwriter Raymond Chandler, the casting of a reluctant Fred MacMurray, and the late decision to cut the expensively filmed execution sequence from the final release. Schickel places Double Indemnity in the context of early 1940s Hollywood and the emergence of a new kind of crime thriller that later became known as film noir. The film was a cornerstone of the genre: its script creates two unforgettable criminal characters, the cynically manipulative femme fatale Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck) and the likeable but amoral BFI Film Classics

Easy Rider Lee Hill Easy Rider (1969) broke the mould of Hollywood studio production, making stars of Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper and Jack Nicholson, and launching a new wave of radical and experimental American cinema. One of the key films of the late 60s, Easy Rider enshrined the ideals of the counterculture, but also foresaw their demise in the division and paranoia of a nation rocked by Watergate and the Vietnam War. Few films since have captured its particular blend of innocence and cynicism, hope and despair. In his illuminating study of the film, Lee Hill explores both the circumstances surrounding its making and the social and cultural forces that found expression in it. Hill argues that the role of the film’s primary screenwriter, Terry Southern, has been BFI Film Classics UK May 2026 • US May 2026 96 Pages • 60 colour illus PB 9781805750291 • £12.99 / $17.95 ePDF 9781805750314 • £11.69 / $16.15 ePub 9781805750307 • £11.69 / $16.15 British Film Institute

Film Sound Modernism Andy Birtwistle, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK Despite the key contribution of sound to the development of cinema as a modern (and modernist) art form, analyses of the relationship between film and modernism often overlook the key role played by sound in film. Film Sound Modernism addresses this critical neglect by exploring how speech, music and sound effects have been used by filmmakers to articulate the conditions and experiences of modernity. Through a wide-ranging analysis of international films, including those from Taiwan, Mexico, Poland and Hong Kong, Andy Birtwistle approaches modernism as both a transhistorical and trans-national phenomenon. L'avventura (1960), Riddles of the Sphinx (1977), The Terrorizers (1986) and Perestroika (2009). He then goes on to tackle topics including the use of environmental sounds in the films of Michelangelo Antonioni, Tsai Ming-liang, and Edward Yang, the voices of non-actors and artist filmmakers, and the ways in which forms of creative noise challenge the traditional division of the soundtrack into dialogue, music and effects. In doing so, he investigates the forms of sonic and audio-visual experimentation that developed within the medium and re-examines cinema's place within the broader history of modernism.

Hitchcockian Thrillers
Must-See Films in the Style of the Suspense Master Stephen Rebello During Alfred Hitchcock’s five-decade reign as the screen’s internationally celebrated Master of Suspense, he directed 53 motion pictures. In such Hitchcock gold standard classics as The 39 Steps, Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Psycho, and The Birds, he staked his claim as the architect, the O.G. of the thriller. He laid down the rules and rhythm of the genre, created an immediately identifiable visual style, experimented constantly with technique, pushed boundaries, tweaked censors, and shattered the expectations of his audiences -- along with their nerves. In exploiting his private fears and vulnerabilities, Hitchcock was as brilliant as making us think and feel as he was at making us scream and invading our nightmares. His films elevated the form and were among the biggest box-office successes and most influential of their time. Fandom, Feminism, and the Female Superhero on Film Lauryn Angel In this book, Lauryn Angel examines female superheroes through a feminist lens, emphasizing the pitfalls of postfeminist representation and the perils and backlash associated with toxic fandom dynamics. Angel takes a close look at the female superheroes that have taken a large role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe. Are these superheroines truly breaking boundaries and providing new models of female representation? By examining these characters via feminist criticism and comparing them with their comic book counterparts, we can see that many of these characters are stuck in the mire of postfeminist representation. Further complicating the matter is the protests of toxic fans (also called anti-fans) who feel that these female heroes are part of a “woke” agenda. Emergence of the Collective as 21st-Century Hero Priscilla Hobbs & Rebekah Lovejoy During the 21st century, the collective hero has emerged as the defining archetype in media, reflecting shifts in global society and the necessity of cultural evolution. Moving beyond the individualistic hero of Western myth, Priscilla Hobbs and Rebekah Lovejoy draw on contemporary popular culture and media to explore the challenges of today's world and propose a new heroic model characterized by thematic and ethical cores of collaboration and balance. Hobbs and Lovejoy present the collective hero as a dynamic and diverse group where individual identities intersect, adapt, and contribute to a greater purpose. These examples demonstrate how archetypes are constructed within groups and how those groups mirror the complexity of real-world social dynamics. Ultimately, the authors assert that collective heroism is not utopian fantasy, but a necessary cultural evolution for navigating social complexity, building resilient communities, and envisioning more democratic, pluralistic, and environmentally conscious futures.

Paranoia and Nostalgia in American Popular Culture, 1980-2020 Owen Cantrell In this book, Owen Cantrell examines politics and popular culture in the United States from 1980 to 2020 to argue that twin structures of feeling—nostalgia and paranoia—have structured American political and cultural life during this period. These structures have mirrored the changing political relationship to history, race, and culture in the United States, offering a pathway to address these changes, many of which were brought about by the backlash politics introduced in response to the gains of the civil rights movement(s). UK February 2026 • US February 2026 240 Pages PB 9798216393061 • £28.99 / $39.95 HB 9781666957259 • £90.00 / $120.00 ePDF 9798216258919 • £81.00 / $108.00 ePub 9781978765184 • £81.00 / $108.00 Bloomsbury Academic
Building on Bifo Berardi’s contention that “the future is over,” Cantrell demonstrates how the concept of the future effectively ended in this era, effectively making this pathway eminently more desirable as a cultural response to political dilemmas. As the future lost its place as a locus of value, then, Cantrell posits that American society entered a state of what Mark Fisher calls “a failed mourning,” with paranoid and nostalgic narratives thus offering compensation for a future that no longer felt relevant or even possible. Through a range of compelling analyses of prominent films including Back to the Future, The Matrix, Get Out, and Black Panther, this book effectively demonstrates how paranoia and nostalgia have functioned in American popular culture as it reflected a collective failure to imagine the future.

Barbenheimer Syndrome
The Creation of Cultural Spectacle at the Box Office Edited by Carolyn Condon Jacobs, Anna Young & Karen A. Ritzenhoff In this edited volume, contributors engage with Barbie (Greta Gerwig, 2023) and Oppenheimer (Christopher Nolan, 2023) through the lens of the Barbenheimer fad, an online and in-person phenomenon — coined by critics and co-opted by fans — that celebrated the counterprogramming of these two divergent films. By framing Barbenheimer as a syndrome, the book revisits this moment in time to consider the elements that constituted the phenomenon on a global scale and to interrogate the logics through which this cultural spectacle may be symptomatic of larger cultural forces and social changes occurring at the time of release. Through the convergence of an interdisciplinary and global range of perspectives, Barbenheimer Syndrome interprets Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Barbenheimer within UK February 2026 • US February 2026 384 Pages • 25 bw illus PB 9798216391739 • £36.99 / $49.95 HB 9781666968637 • £95.00 / $130.00 ePDF 9798216251675 • £85.50 / $117.00 ePub 9781978766709 • £85.50 / $117.00 Bloomsbury Academic

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie
Popular Culture, Cinema, and Gender Edited by Hilary Radner, University of Otago, New Zealand & Rebecca Stringer, University of Otago, New Zealand This volume brings together an international array of contributors to analyse Greta Gerwig’s unprecedented success, Barbie (2023), exploring how a film released in a moment of industrial crisis for Hollywood became the highest-grossing film directed or co-directed by a woman. Contributors delve into the film's cultural context, exploring how it engages with the ambiguities of contemporary feminism, reproductive politics, race and representation, and contemporary ecological issues. They contrast the film’s commercial success against its lukewarm critical reception, considering why it was snubbed at the Academy Awards and criticised as a prime example of ‘Marketplace Feminism’. Chapters also examine the central significance of music within the film, as well as UK May 2026 • US May 2026 336 Pages • 37 colour illus HB 9781350523951 • £75.00 / $100.00 PB 9781350523968 • £24.99 / $34.95 ePDF 9781350523982 • £22.49 / $31.45 ePub 9781350523975 • £22.49 / $31.45 Bloomsbury Academic
the critical role played by male characters, particularly Ryan Gosling’s ‘Ken’. Placing Barbie within the wider context of Gerwig’s career, contributors trace her continuing exploration of gender, identity, and consumer culture. Finally, they assess Barbie as an ‘out-of-character’ event film that not only unsettles the boundaries of the media industries but may have permanently reshaped the landscape of cinema made for and about women.

Irony and Sincerity in Contemporary Television Playing Nice in Aesthetics and Politics Edited by Sage Westfall & Owen Cantrell Irony and Sincerity in Contemporary Television: Playing Nice in Aesthetics and Politics argues that the 21st-century political landscape has shaped modern manifestations and interpretations of the New Sincerity aesthetic in televisual media. In the wake of the Golden Age of Television, and the emergence of the first Trump administration, television shows turned to the comfortable, the familiar, and the nice. This collection argues that the tension between sincerity and irony in these programs is essential to understanding what they are doing aesthetically—and politically. readers will come away from the book with an understanding of our modern television landscape and how creators are responding to their audience's overwhelming demands for sincerity. Some works discussed in this collection include Schitt’s Creek, Ted Lasso, Jury Duty, and The Bear; genres such as Indian soap operas and Hallmark TV films; and comedians such as Joe Pera and Nathan Fielder. Ultimately, each of these shows has a unique and important goal, and the edited collection analyzes niceness in relation to queerness, class, unlikability and character growth, traditional gender norms, and the comfort of sincerity.

Fashioning Hitchcock
Stories Behind the Costumes from The Lodger to Marnie Caroline Young, author A tribute to and examination of the contributions of costume designers to Hitchcock’s illustrious film career. With his keen artist’s eye, Alfred Hitchcock’s genius as a director lay in the visual universe he developed across a sixdecade career. In the many unforgettable moments from his movies, it’s the costume that enhances the storytelling; Tippi Hedren cowering from a mass of angry birds in her torn green dress, Cary Grant in a glen-check suit as he escapes a crop duster, and Kim Novak emerging from green mist in her ghost-like gray suit. In Fashioning Hitchcock, Caroline Young details Hitchcock’s relationships with his costume designers to create an identifiable aesthetic through clothing. Using archival material, Young paints the full picture of the use of costume in Hitchcock’s movies, and his key relationships with designers, producers, and actors to delve into the visual language, the UK June 2026 • US June 2026 296 Pages • 22 color photos HB 9798881807313 • £30.00 / $36.00 ePDF 9798216394839 • £27.00 / $32.40 ePub 9798881807320 • £27.00 / $32.40 Bloomsbury Academic
obsessions, and the quest for beauty that defined his six-decade career. While the legendary Edith Head designed twelve of his fifty-five films, Hitchcock also worked with some of the most celebrated of costume designers. But with his clear focus, from the beginning of his career Hitchcock worked hands-on to shape the style of his leading ladies, heroes and villains. For Hitchcock, clothes were a tool for suspense. In North by Northwest, Eva Marie Saint’s shawl catches on brambles as she tries to escape pursuers. Tippi Hedren’s taupe shoe slips from her pocket in Marnie in her efforts to sneak out of an office after robbing the safe. Young also touches on how Hitchcock set out to appeal to a female audience, revealing his leading ladies’ wants and desires as they navigated their place in the world. This is an essential addition to any Hitchcock fan’s bookshelf and insightful exploration of the role of costume design in filmmaking.

Studies in Groovy Gothic Cinema
Trash, Horror, and the Hemispheric Sixties Antonio Barrenechea In Studies in Groovy Gothic Cinema, Antonio Barrenechea launches an inquiry into inter-American exploitation cinema—a horror cinema which captured the rise of ’60s counterculture and youth-oriented lifestyles—as it harnessed the cultural zeitgeist through gratuitous depictions of sex, blood, and music. Despite the genre’s cultural impact, Barrenechea argues, its association with vulgar taste, shoestring budgets, and cheap thrills makes it often overlooked in existing cinema history and scholarship. In addition, it expands the focus beyond Anglo-American contexts to consider how Hitchcock’s films have been received and interpreted in Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

Across Polish film history, the contributions of women have often been overshadowed by their male counterparts. While figures like Wanda Jakubowska, Barbara Sass-Zdort, and Agnieszka Holland have garnered recognition, many others remain marginalized and their work alarmingly underresearched. This open access book redresses this imbalance, providing a comprehensive analysis of women's engagement in Polish cinema from as early as the 1930s up to present day.
The foreign ‘elsewhere’ has long been depicted in American cinema as a site of fascination and fantasy, shaping how Western audiences view the world. 'Elsewhere' in American Cinema explores how these portrayals have also created long-persisting damaging stereotypes and reinforced troubling power dynamics.

These include actresses such as Nora Ney, Jadwiga Smosarska, and Lena Zelichowska; producers like Maria Hirszbein; directors such as Maria Zmarz-Koczanowicz, Krystyna Janda, Natalia Koryncka-Gruz, Urszula Urbaniak, and Izabella Cywinskal; as well as scriptwriters, editors, and amateur filmmakers. In doing so, it challenges traditional film historiography, uncovering the systemic neglect and patriarchal structures that have long suppressed women's contributions to the industry. The case studies presented also revise the Western perspective on Polish and Eastern European cinema, challenging the misplaced notion that it is primarily a politically engaged, male-dominated auteur cinema. In doing so, the volume initiates the long-overdue process of rewriting the vernacular history of Polish cinema.

Bringing together a diverse group of international contributors, the volume explores depictions of the ‘elsewhere’ across various genres including musicals, westerns, war films, and romantic comedies. Drawing on theoretical frameworks such as Michel Foucault’s heterotopias, Edward Said’s Orientalism, and Homi Bhabha’s concept of in-betweenness, the eleven chapters offer fresh perspectives on films spanning from the silent era to contemporary Hollywood. Through close readings of films such as The Fugitive (1947), America America (1963), and Kingdom of Heaven (2005), they analyse Hollywood’s emphasis on patriotism and its problematic portrayal of conflict zones, the role of music in exoticising foreign lands, and the evolution of stereotypes into counter-models. As a result, the cinematic 'elsewhere’ emerges as a complex space that is simultaneously real and constructed, familiar and alien, onto which American filmmakers project cultural anxieties, fantasies, and ideologies, revealing the changing relationship between the United States and the rest of the world.

The Cinema of Stephen Chow
Contemporary Art Cinema Culture in China
Edited by Gary Bettinson, Lancaster University, UK., Vivian P.Y. Lee, Simon
Xiang Fan, Goldsmiths University of London, UK
Fraser University, Canada., Gary Bettinson, Lancaster University, UK. & Vivian
Contemporary Art Cinema Culture in China explores the dynamic networks of art cinema in China in the 21st century, highlighting the cultural practices of intermediaries such as independent programmers, internet critics, and fan translators.
P.Y. Lee, Simon Fraser University, Canada In the West, Stephen Chow is renowned as the ground-breaking director and star of global blockbusters such as Kung Fu Hustle (2004) and Shaolin Soccer (2001). Among Hong Kong audiences, Chow is celebrated as the leading purveyor of local comedy, popularising the so-called mo-lei-tau (“gibberish”) brand of Cantonese vernacular humour, and cultivating a style of madcap comedy that often masks a trenchant social commentary. This volume approaches Chow from a diverse range of critical perspectives. Each of the essays, written by a host of renowned international scholars, offers compelling new interpretations of familiar hits such as From Beijing with Love (1994) and Journey to the West (2013). The detailed case studies of seminal local and global movies provide overdue critical attention to Chow's filmmaking, highlighting the aesthetic power, economic significance, and cultural impact of his films in both domestic and global markets.

Offering insights gleaned from original ethnographic research, Xiang Fan reveals how these intermediary practitioners think about cinema, negotiate judgement and appreciation, construct a discourse of value and taste, and most importantly, constitute a coordinated and interrelated network for the sharing of art cinema. Fan argues that although their motivation was derived from a cinephilia seeking to forge an alternative mode of distribution and reception, the ‘new’ cinema culture they have produced simultaneously negotiates a subtly complicit relationship with authoritative and market forces. In doing so, she offers an original interdisciplinary perspective on contemporary art cinema culture in Chinese society.

Artists’ Moving Image Cinema as Archive
Sarah Smith, The Glasgow School of Art, UK Artists have long been fascinated by film, but recent decades have seen an explosion in direct artistic engagements with mainstream cinema, particularly from the classical and post-classical eras of Hollywood filmmaking. Ranging from directly sampling film clips to imitating aspects of films, these engagements deploy highly recognisable examples of cinema to activate collective cultural memory. Artists’ Moving Image presents a diverse and wide-ranging body of works, from established artists such as Steve McQueen and Douglas Gordon to mid-career artists like Jesse Jones and Rachel Maclean, reinvigorating the existing ‘canon’ of cinematic artists’ films. Beyond discussing individual works, Sarah Smith categorizes and analyzes the trends in this expanding area of art practice, UK May 2026 • US April 2026 200 Pages • 19 colour illus HB 9781788313988 • £75.00 / $100.00 PB 9781350232327 • £24.99 / $39.95 ePDF 9781350160330 • £22.49 / $35.95 ePub 9781350160347 • £22.49 / $35.95 Bloomsbury Academic
arguing that the point of interest is not cinema (and its history) per se, but what its evocation as cultural archive can illuminate about the legacies of the past in the present. Examining subjects such as found footage as feminist poetics, the documentary turn in contemporary art and the unfinished film, she shows how artists’ films interrogate dominant cinematic forms and their cultural meanings. For anyone interested in contemporary art, film studies or exhibition practice, this book is a defining exploration of how cinema operates as twentieth-century archive in recent artists’ moving image.

Experimental Cinema
Structures, Systems and Strategies Simon Payne, Anglia Ruskin University, UK Experimental Cinema examines a range of structures, systems and strategies that film and video artists have developed from the late 1960s to the present. Over the decades, artists have responded to the ever-changing medium of cinema and its technological advances, as well as taking inspiration from painting, sculpture and music. Simon Payne argues that the evolution of methodical strategies in experimental cinema goes back to the first avant-garde films made a century ago, in the 1920s. He shows how key figures internationally have formed part of this picture since then, but suggests that the most thorough formal exploration of cinema can be credited to a generation of artists that began making films in Britain in the 1960s and 1970s. A Cinematic Mode of Existence Perspectival Analytic of the Image

Do cinema’s moving images have the affective capacity to shape our eyes anew? Does it, then, engender novel points of view and different perspectives? This ontogenetic proposition is what moves this book: can we imagine that we walk out of the cinema and see through Akerman’s Jeanne Dielmann a world restrained by patriarchy? Can we recall with Apichatpong’s monkey ghosts (li phi) past lives that each expresses its own world? Do we then breathe the warm air and feel the tranquility of Ozu’s universe? In short, does cinema move beyond itself; that is, beyond its supposed material conditions as well as its Thinking Media

A Poetic History
Islamic and Japanese Parallels in Film David Sander David Sander invites readers on a cinematic journey through Islamic and Japanese cultural and religious worlds. This unusual juxtaposition crosses boundaries established by a strictly linear view of history, revealing astonishing connections beneath the surface. Sander shows how certain films continue older poetic and mythic traditions, evoking archetypal moments of spiritual crisis that are both unique and universal. This filmic journey allows a meeting with countless lives, souls and stories that remain latent and uncelebrated in contemporary societies. As Sander traverses deep parallels and channels between these worlds, a landscape of poetic history is revealed. Poetic history, he contends, is an age-old mode of cognition, a nuanced alternative logic for understanding and metabolizing the past through juxtaposed images, rather than through linear cause-and-effect UK January 2026 • US January 2026 304 Pages • 15 bw illus PB 9798216390565 • £28.99 / $39.95 HB 9781666931341 • £90.00 / $120.00 ePDF 9798216255000 • £81.00 / $108.00 ePub 9781978770898 • £81.00 / $108.00 Bloomsbury Academic

As the book unfolds, we can see film after film, with their subliminal spiritual and poetic roots, weaving together a subtle tapestry. An archetypal, border-crossing image of the human “wanderer” appears, an image that helps chart dangers of the collective journey. The cinematic wanderer, like the rest of us, faces profound trauma and the possibilities of ecological destruction and apocalyptic warfare, that may both hide and reveal the wellsprings of love, healing and renewal.

A Siberian History of Soviet Film
Arthouse Crime Scenes
Caroline Damiens
Geoff King, Brunel University London, UK
Winner of the British Association of Film, Television and Screen Studies Best First Monograph Award.
How is crime represented in art cinema? And how can this be understood in the context of global sociopolitical and film-industrial trends? Crime might be shown or lurk only at the edges. It might be left unresolved or unexplained. Arthouse crimes can be petty and small scale or raise big questions associated with the arthouse sector: political issues, the nature of humanity, truth and knowability.
Manufacturing Visions of the Indigenous Peoples of the North
In A Siberian History of Soviet Film, Caroline Damiens explores how the depictions of the indigenous 'Peoples of the North' in Soviet cinema and television evolved between 1920 and 1980. Damiens combines a detailed analysis of key works such as Forest People (1928), Igdenbu (1930), Dersu Uzala (1961 & 1975), Tymancha’s Friend (1969) and The Most Beautiful Ships (1972), with primary sources like press articles, archives, and interviews, to reveal how these cinematic portrayals were created and negotiated, providing insight into the concepts of progress and authenticity in the Soviet context. She emphasises the role of indigenous individuals in shaping their cinematic image, both in front of and behind the camera, highlighting the works of lesser-known figures like Suntsai Geonka, Zinaida Pikunova, and Iurii Rytkheu. In doing so, Damiens emphasises the multifaceted nature of film, where interpretations differ based on the perspectives of those involved. Using a decolonial approach and drawing from extensive archival materials, Damiens prompts a re-evaluation of the Soviet cinematic past and present by centring indigenous voices in the narrative. In doing so, she provides a thorough exploration of the intricate relationship between culture, representation, and identity in Soviet cinema.

Art Film, Genre and Crime in Contemporary World Cinema
Arthouse Crime Scenes is the first book to address the relationship between art cinema and crime, contributing to the study of both categories. Case studies are provided of works by celebrated filmmakers including Lucretia Martell, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Bong Joon Ho, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Jia Zhangke, Andrey Zvyagintsez and Lee Chang-dong. Textual analysis is combined with focus on social and industrial contexts. A recurring theme is the situation of arthouse crime films within differing manifestations of broader processes of late-modern neoliberal globalization and cultural hybridity. Approaches examined range from the oblique to social realism and other mixtures of crime and arthouse tendencies.

Epidemic Films to Die For
The Monomyth Reboot
Tom Zaniello, Northern Kentucky University, USA
Nadia Salem
Epidemic cinema remains an enduring genre of contemporary film, ranging from medical dramas to post-apocalyptic thrillers. Using a vast filmography, Zaniello not only details the incredible variety of epidemics and their role in popular culture, but also demonstrates how epidemics, as a rule, have been confronted without proper preparation or deployment of resources in different forms of media. Therefore, Epidemic Films to Die For is the first and the only book that extensively analyzes the history and deployment of films and TV series towards a chronicle of epidemic films. In addition to providing an overview of how widespread disease and illness have been historically depicted via film and media, this book skillfully contextualizes the contemporary ongoing moment in which filmmakers and producers grapple with the cultural imaginary surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
In this book, Nadia Salem examines and questions the enduring relevance of the monomyth, or the hero’s journey, for storytellers and their audiences.

A Transmodern Update for Mythopoeia
www.bloomsbury.com
Created by Joseph Campbell and largely popularized by George Lucas, the hero’s journey has come to define mythic quests for all. However, in recent years, this genderless paradigm has lost its appeal as a repetitive Bildungsroman, and as a result, Salem argues for the inclusion of the heroine’s journey as a Künstlerroman and a voice of alterity. Where the hero’s journey reflects a coming of age, the heroine’s journey reflects a coming of middle age, which are arguably equally necessary for the complete fulfillment of character. Taking a fresh look at the monomyth, Salem analyzes the narratives of Eros and Psyche, Jane Eyre, and Titanic to argue for an emphasis on the integration of both the hero’s and the heroine’s journeys. Ultimately, this book demonstrates how the monomyth as rebooted turns monomythic mythopoesis into fertile ground for the kinds of epiphanies demanded by transmodernism. Scholars of film studies, communication, composition, and mythology will find this book of particular interest.

You Know You Love Me
How Gossip Girl Changed Pop Culture as We Know It Lindsay Denninger Growing up is hard to do, but the kids on Gossip Girl sure made it look easy—and sexy, to boot. Set in the always-alluring penthouses and exclusive clubs of New York City, Gossip Girl followed, as its intro said, the “scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite,” through the eyes of an omniscient narrator that had her eyes, ears, and hands in everything. Gossip Girl was enticing in a “lifestyles of the rich and famous” sort of way, but when you added on the fact that these pretty people had pretty problems and someone watching their every move, it was almost too good to resist. In You Know You Love Me, Lindsay Denninger gives an unprecedented inside look at how this icon of ‘00s pop culture captured the hearts, minds, and eyes of millions of viewers; influenced the worlds of fashion and media; and continues to reverberate in the culture today. Weaving together oral history interviews with all of the show’s key personnel—performers, crew, writers, and showrunner Josh Safran—Denninger doesn’t just reveal behind-the-scenes drama. Remaking the Monster
Transmedia Adaptations of Frankenstein’s Creature Alissa Burger, Culver-Stockton College In Remaking the Monster, Alissa Burger adopts an interdisciplinary approach to examine the continued influence of Frankenstein’s Creature on popular culture, demonstrating through close readings the necessity of reconsidering its role and meaning as it has changed over time. Since the Creature’s introduction to the horror genre’s canon, proliferating and evolving for over a century across a variety of media formats and genres, Burger posits that each new iteration of its appearance and impact encourages audiences to (re)consider critical questions about society and about ourselves. What are we capable of—both good and bad? What care, if any, do we owe to one another? And how might a monstrous appearance belie a deeper truth? Ultimately, Burger argues, wherever and however the Creature appears, part of its innate function—and perhaps, the key to its perennial resonance with audiences—is found in the approachable opportunity to engage with daunting concepts of life and death, choice, agency, and, above all, what it means to be human. Just as there is a riveting saga within the Star Wars universe that centers on the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker and the redemption of Darth Vader, so too has a saga unfolded in relation to George Lucas and Star Wars fandom. Kylie Minogue
Critical Insights into Pop Music and Media Celebrity Edited by Stephen O'Neill, Maynooth University, Ireland & Maria Pramaggiore, Appalachian State University, USA This pioneering study provides a critical appraisal of pop star Kylie Minogue. It argues that a study of this mononymous global pop icon and celebrity – as “Kylie,” she takes her place alongside Cher, Madonna and Beyoncé in the pop pantheon – is long overdue. Written by academics, music practitioners, and fans, this book argues that Minogue’s persona, performances and reception provide new critical insights into contemporary pop music culture, digital media, and celebrity. It further argues that dismissals of Kylie underestimate her accomplishments as a pop artist and singer-songwriter and undermine fans of pop music who form deep, affective bonds with performers, songs and albums. Contributors draw on current perspectives in pop music studies, feminism, celebrity studies, fandom, and queer studies, a range revealing that to interpret Kylie is to engage compelling cultural frameworks. Across four parts (Pop Girlhood, Global Kylie, Dance Music, and Queer and Online Fandoms) the book demonstrates how Minogue herself makes important interventions into contemporary popular culture, with her career providing a micro-history of pop music, its myriad cultural meanings, and its fan practices. Witchcraft in Movies, Television, and Popular Culture Edited by Douglas Brode & Leah Deyneka, Independent Scholar, UK An anthology of essays that deal with Witchcraft and the figure of the Witch, as they have been presented in films, television, and popular culture, in order to understand how, why, and when the common anti-Witchcraft/ anti-Witch attitude evolved. Mainstream tales of Witchcraft, including modern movies, novels, TV series, and other examples of our popular culture, more often than not express the traditional notion of a Witch as a wild, dangerous, untamable, “nasty” woman, obsessed with a desire for power to control all around her, in most narratives such a hunger presented as a negative. In truth, The Witch is a symbol of ‘threatening evil’ only to those men and women who accept a conservative sensibility. For members of either gender who do not, The Witch is perceived as hero and role model. This collection begins with the Biblical figure of Lilith, followed by Morgan le Fey from Arthurian legend/ myth in literature as well as in popular culture, followed by the more contemporary depictions of the Witch that start to appear in the 1960s; for example, in the Bewitched sitcom, the Star Wars franchise, Harry Potter, and even the television show Scooby-Doo. International depictions of the Witch are discussed, including Italy’s Dario Argento’s films, Suspiria and Inferno. The final section of this collection focuses on the most iconic depictions of the Witch produced during the 21st century, including A Discovery of Witches, Penny Dreadful, Game of Thrones and the history of the Witch in films by the Walt Disney studio.

Fractured Gaming Cultures
Marginalized Gamers and New Identities Christine Tomlinson Christine Tomlinson demonstrates how embracing and engaging with personal identity—both positively and negatively—has led gaming culture to evolve past the monolith of the stereotypical “gamer” image that exists within the popular imaginary to offer marginalized players safety and community online. In light of the dichotomy between the hegemonic ideals of who a “gamer” should be—stereotypically young, heterosexual white boys and men—and the reality of diverse gaming audiences, Tomlinson observes how marginalized players have formed their own communities grounded in shared identity and experience. These communities, she contends, allow players to produce new individual and shared gaming identities and cultures as acts of resistance and resilience, through which they can reclaim a position in an often-hostile environment and a slowly changing industry. Ultimately, Tomlinson argues that while these alternative communities should not need to exist, they have paved the way for a fracturing of gaming culture that provides marginalized players with safe and productive outlets for discussion and Emerging Insights into Esports

Video Games and Gender Assemblages Understanding #Gamergate and Beyond Sian Tomkinson In this book, Sian Tomkinson examines why, despite around half of gamers being female, highly-gendered stereotypical assumptions pervade the video game industry and communities of play, leading to toxic attitudes and events such as Gamergate and beyond. Tomkinson utilizes a Deleuzoguattarian lens through critique of categories to encourage a shift away from the binary oppositions that often lie at the root of this tension. Through the use of concepts including the assemblage, faciality, and the refrain, the book argues that the increased diversity of games, producers, and players have challenged traditional gamer identities. Gamers faced with this challenge, Tomkinson posits, can either embrace new experiences and affects – deterritorialising this identity – or become destructively reactionary by reterritorializing and refusing to meaningfully engage with difference. Ultimately, this book demonstrates how video game cultures and communities have a unique assemblage of influences while also functioning as a microcosm of broader social, cultural, and political tensions. Pop & Postfeminism
Female Dandyism in Popular Music Nathalie Weidhase, University of Surrey, UK In Pop & Postfeminism, Nathalie Weidhase conceptualises the female dandy as a figure that simultaneously embodies and disrupts postfeminist notions of femininity, including maintaining a physique conforming to contemporary beauty standards, constant self-surveillance and self-improvement, and the naturalisation of gender difference and heterosexuality. Weidhase examines how music videos function as spaces in popular culture where the politics of the feminine can be articulated. These spaces allow female pop stars to be valued as artists with distinct contributions to popular music. Focusing on Amy Winehouse, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Lana Del Rey, she illuminates different characteristics of the postfeminist dandy in popular music. Gender and Genre in 1990s Hollywood
Challenging Definitions of Sex, Women, and Femininity Patricia Di Risio, Monash University, Australia The 1990s was a decade of significant turmoil in Hollywood cinema, which resulted in a watershed moment in the interplay of gender and genre. Patricia Di Risio argues that cinematic representations of unconventional women had an important effect on traditionally male oriented genres, such as the crime thriller, road movie, western, film noir, war film, sci-fi, and horror. Di Risio analyses seven key films from the decade, including Blue Steel (1990), Thelma & Louise (1991), The Quick and the Dead (1995), Bound (1996), Jackie Brown (1997), G.I. How the Power Rangers Conquered the World Joshua Moore WHEN IT FIRST APPEARED ON AMERICAN TELEVISION SETS IN 1993, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was like nothing else on TV. The brainchild of Israeli-American music producer Haim Saban, the show stitched together segments from the Japanese children’s program Super Sentai with newly recorded live-action footage, and its unexpected popularity quickly cemented the Fox Kids Network’s reputation as a pop-culture powerhouse. Garish, heartfelt, utterly strange, and bursting with irrepressible energy, the show was a dramatic departure from the animated fare that dominated kids TV at the time, and came closer than any program before—or since—to being a “live-action cartoon.”
