The Interiors of Social Media Architecture, Space, and Technology in the 21st Century
Javier Fernández Contreras, HEAD – Genève, Switzerland
How is social media reshaping architecture? What can platforms like Instagram, Twitch, Pinterest, and TikTok tell us about the spaces we inhabit?
The Interiors of Social Media is the first book to explore the relationship between architecture, interiors, and social media, guiding us through today’s digital landscape to reveal where the virtual and physical worlds meet From influencer bedrooms and gaming setups to humanitarian shelters, pet influencer homes, and porn rooms, Javier Fernández Contreras reveals how social media does not merely depict interiors, but actively scripts new spatial types: homes that are both private and hyper-public, domestic yet performative, and material yet algorithmic By mapping platform spatialities and tracing the themes that connect them, he examines interiors as sites of consumerism, display, and mediatization environments that expose the ethical, political, and ecological implications of 21st-century digital culture
Drawing on architecture, media studies, and digital humanities, The Interiors of Social Media offers a critical lens on how online interactions are woven into everyday life and invites us to rethink architecture in the age of the algorithm
With contributions from Paule Perron, Michela Bassanelli, Damien Greder, Vytautas Jankauskas, and students at HEAD –Genève
Mohsen Foroughi
Iranian Modernism and the Architect as Government Agent Peyman Akhgar
Mohsen Foroughi (1907-1983) was one of the most important and influential Iranian architects of the modern era Standing at the intersection between modernism, tradition, and the Beaux-Arts, Foroughi’s work traces the major cultural developments of twentieth-century Iran and the Middle East – from the development of a new Iranian nationalism in the 1930s, to the emergence of a high modernist aesthetic of the mid-twentieth century, and finally to a more locally-expressive and formalist approach in the 1960s and 70s
Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, this book reveals Foroughi’s vital roles as a designer, educator, and politician in Iran’s program of modernisation, and explores a selection of case-study buildings including Foroughi’s branches for the Iranian National Bank, the Sa’di Mausoleum, his Senate House of Iran, and the Maison de l’Iran in Paris
This is the first English-language study of the career of an Iranian modernist architect, offering new and unique insights into the expansion of twentieth-century modern architecture into non-Euro-American global contexts
Architecture and Cultural Continuity
The Making of Festival, Experience and Historicity
Christian Frost
Architecture and Cultural Continuity explores a dynamic way of viewing architecture – arguing that all architecture is best evaluated through active experiences in relation to cultural traditions of community and belonging, space, ritual, and setting A work in three parts, the book first analyses in-depth the Festival of San Giovanni in Florence, an annual series of celebrations involving the entire city Tracing its history from its Roman origins via the Renaissance through to contemporary times, this case study is used to explore ideas of continuity and tradition and how these shape and are shaped by architecture and the city Part 2 gathers theoretical tools from philosophy, anthropology, and performance studies to offer a framework for the appraisal of architecture – whether engaged in festival or simply part of the background to everyday life – as experience rather than form The final part presents historic and contemporary case studies to explain the theory in practice, from Lord Leighton’s House in London to Beit Beirut in Lebanon, and from Salisbury’s medieval Chapterhouse to the contemporary Australian Parliament building
Written for architectural theorists, historians, and designers alike, this book will allow the reader to assess architecture in a way that re-addresses aspects of history often obscured by post-enlightenment thinking, and reveals an architecture rooted in cultural traditions better able to contribute to the diverse communities of the future

The Garden Retreat in Asia and Europe Ways of Dwelling in a Torn World
Edited
by Yue
Zhuang,
University of Exeter, UK, Alasdair Forbes, University of Exeter, UK & Michael Charlesworth, University of Texas at Austin, USA
The Garden Retreat in Asia and Europe explores the meaning of gardens and designed landscapes as places of retreat and refuge in times of need or emergency
In the current times of war, pandemic, climate change, and global anxiety, the value of the garden as a sanctuary, a space where we can find refuge in a natural environment, has taken on new and poignant meanings and has attracted increasing academic interest Multidisciplinary and multicultural in scope, this book explores the meaning of gardens and designed landscapes as places of retreat and refuge in times of need or emergency Examining perspectives from scholars including art historians, architects, philosophers, landscape architects and garden practitioners, it reassess the restorative impact of the garden, whether understood from an individual, cultural or environmental point of view
Ranging widely across Asia and Europe, its chapters examine ideas, narratives and practices from the 4th-century Chinese poet Tao Yuanming, to the 12th century Iranian polymath Omar Khayyam, through to the late 20th-century British artist and film-maker Derek Jarman Drawing upon traditional Asian philosophies like Buddhism, Daoism and Sufism and combining these with more recent western philosophies, the aim is to question how the unique virtues of gardens and designed landscapes can help to poise, educate, and possibly transform attitudes and behaviours in a time of personal, environmental, or cultural crisis

Vanessa Bell and Charleston
Motherhood, Queerness and the Domestic Imagination
Jon King
Vanessa Bell’s art and life were animated by the complex emotions of motherhood: creativity and care bound up with doubt, desire and ambivalence This is the first book to focus exclusively on the influence of motherhood in Bell’s art, exploring how it shaped her creative vision and its lasting legacy at Charleston, her country home.
In 1916 Bell moved with her young children and the painter Duncan Grant to Charleston, a remote farmhouse in the Sussex Downs that became a home for art, intimacy and experiment There she lived until her death in 1961, creating a world where the boundaries between painting and living dissolved, and where care and collaboration lay at the heart of artistic life
In a feminist and queer reappraisal of Bloomsbury, Jon King unearths Bell's experience of motherhood, and the ways in which her artistic vision unsettled the boundaries between mother and child The book traces the emotional afterlife of this vision through four generations of women: from Bell’s mother, Julia Stephen, to the photographic legacy of her great-aunt
Julia Margaret Cameron, and onward to her daughter, the writer and artist Angelica Garnett Through these intertwined lives, it explores how motherhood was inherited, contested and reimagined across time
Richly illustrated, it brings together paintings, photographs and objects of the home, from Bell’s decorated rooms and family album to the camp Famous Women dinner service of 1932, to show how the domestic imagination, in its maternal, queer and collaborative forms, reverberates through the story of both Bloomsbury and British modernism more broadly
Crafting Choice
Abortion Politics and Handwork in the United States
Hinda Mandell
Crafting Choice: Abortion Politics and Handwork in the U S represents the first known inquiry into how people deploy publicly engaged handcraft campaigns as a means for abortion-political action Whether crafters turn to yarn as a platform to fight for reproductive justice or to limit abortion access, this work takes a holistic approach to study how liberals and conservatives choose yarn as a political-activation tool in a Democracy As a comprehensive investigation grounded in the shifting legality of abortion through two monumental U S Supreme Court decisions (including Roe v Wade in 1973 and Dobbs v Jackson Women s Health Organization in 2022), this book explains why efforts at persuasive handcrafting galvanize people around abortion politics, and what impacts craftwork serves an ever-polarized American public While “craftivism” is typically regarded as a tool of the left, with the whimsical and often tongue-in-cheek campaigns, this book also offers rare consideration of how those on the political right are actively engaged in their own craftivism efforts with abortion
The Right to the Museum
Race, Gender and Power in New York City’s Art Museums, 1966-1976
Caroline Wallace
Who does the space of the museum really belong to? How can museums become sites of social change? What role can artists play in making museums more inclusive?
This book explores the ways in which New York City’s art museums were actively reshaped and radically reimagined by artists in the 1960s and 70s Through a messy array of protests – feminist sitins, theatrical performances, and placard waving pickets – artists asserted their authority over the institutions responsible for the display and collection of their work
But they also created their own; as neighborhood museums, artist projects and collective spaces Presenting a rich history of spatial reclamation and appropriation, this book offers an innovative new reading of this intense period of artist-activism and museum making
Each chapter focuses on a specific institution in New York, whilst making connections to urban movements for spatial justice Drawn from archival research and new spatial readings of art activism, the book also charts the history of Black, Puerto Rican and feminist groups, and how institutions coopted their ideals to facilitate the expansion of museums in late capitalism At a time when museums are again sites of protest and politics, The Right to the Museum forms a crucial contribution to broader understanding of the history of museums, and the relationship between artists and society In looking back, it recovers the potential of the museum as a site for social and political transformation

Édouard Vuillard, the Nabis, and the
Francesca Berry, University of Birmingham, UK
Politics of Domesticity
This ground-breaking book is the first to address the feminine and feminist politics of Intimiste art - a modernist mode of art making developed in the 1890s by Édouard Vuillard while associated with the Nabi 'brotherhood' Coined by contemporary critics, 'intimisme' encapsulated the shared approach of these artists to depicting intimate settings and themes Vuillard's paintings, which are typically small, employ bold pigments and economic brushstrokes to depict female figures in tightly composed apartment interiors Those portrayed include his mother and sister, just as wives and lovers dominate the art of other Nabis, including Maurice Denis and Pierre Bonnard Francesca Berry comparatively analyses the gender politics of Nabi art to reveal real differences Through skilled visual interpretation she argues that Vuillard attempted a profound engagement with the material conditions of feminine domesticity in cooperation with his first and most sustained audience: women He did so, the author reveals, in artworks that explore a complex range of feminine experiences such as sexual initiation, stillbirth, illicit work, and unceasing housework The personal gender politics of Intimiste practice also are foregrounded
Making an artistic project of feminine domesticity also meant entering the field of politics The 1890s was the decade of state legislation and feminist demands with respect to work in the home and women's familial rights Personal in motif and Symbolist in form, Berry's historical research reveals these artworks to have been social and political, sometimes even feminist, in meaning Transcending the structural repression of domesticity in histories of modernist art, this book overturns residual myths of aesthetic introspection and social retreat that for too long have been attached to Nabi Symbolism

Ethical Materialities in Art and Moving Images
Edited by Silke Panse, University for the Creative Arts, UK
Starting from the premise that after modernism and postmodernism – in the Anthropocene – an artwork cannot rest upon its separation from the planet, this volume develops new ethical practice and thought with respect to art, philosophy and moving images Practitioners and theorists examine how the relations between the ethical and the material figure in a context in which a dearth of ethical practice and thought has caused the materialities of the Anthropocene and the climate catastrophe
Ethics are generally regarded as constituted through immaterial relations guided by moral imperatives By contrast, this volume argues that the singular ethicalities that are manifested in a work cannot be captured by abstract ethics The explorations of the ethical here are not prescriptive, but creative Through artistic and philosophical thought and practice, the contributions move beyond the division between an active practice of ethics and a contemplative theory of aesthetics They ask what ethicalities and materialities are at play in the relations between the artist, the art, their worlds and the planet after new materialism and posthumanism
Rather than transcending the ethical through the material or the material through the ethical, the contributions articulate the singular relations between them and consider the inter- and intra-active ethical and material relations of art and images in biodiverse environments They suggest that to bring out the ethical dimensions of the material and the material dimension of the ethical – without identifying one with the other –is a responsibility of art and images

Visual Counterculture in Japan
Political Shifts and the Dynamics of Resistance
Marco Bohr, Nottingham Trent University, UK
This book presents innovative analysis of emergent visual trends in Japan from the late 1960s to the present day Adopting a thematic approach, this interdisciplinary text deconstructs the role that visual practices played in shaping a variety of countercultural discourses related to politics, gender, identity, sexuality, censorship, ethics and disasters The book makes the case that visual practices do not merely function as a way to record counterculture, but that such practices are in themselves contributing to dynamics of resistance
By considering a wide range of artists, photographers, film makers and practitioners, the book focuses on the way that visual culture transgresses, subverts or in the very least questions assumed socio-cultural boundaries in Japan In doing so, the book foregrounds the crucial role that images play in our society today Images are no just depictions of political shifts as and when they do occur, but they form part of this very shift in their own right The book also highlights the interconnectedness between various visual practices and how they fit into wider geopolitical considerations on a global scale

The Private Museum of Contemporary Art Cultural Capital and the Reshaping of Heritage
Yoram Eshkol-Rokach, Independent, UK
What is the purpose of private museums? Who do they benefit and what threat do they pose to their public counterparts? This book examines the global phenomenon of the private museum of contemporary art, assessing the benefits gained by founder-owners of such institutions, and the impact they have on canon formation and art history
In this book art dealer and critic Yoram Eshkol-Rokach investigates the political, social and economic circumstances which have created the conditions behind the rise in this phenomenon, addressing ten case studies across the US, France and China A former gallery owner himself Eshkol-Rokach, utilises his unique position to explore the business histories of each of the individual museum owners and reveals the returns they reap in political, social and economic spheres: benefits that transcend those of traditional art philanthropy Employing ideas from political and economic theory, art market studies, art sociology, consumer and critical luxury scholarship, and art and fashion histories, The Private Museum of Contemporary Art reveals the interlocking relationship of the museum sector with the art market and the impact of philanthrocapitalism, a venture capitalist gifting ideology, on the museum model
Confessional Video Art and Subjectivity
Private Experiences in Public Spaces
Jaye Early
This is the first book of its kind to examine the development of the confessional subject in video art and demonstrate how it can provide a vital platform for navigating the politics of self, subjectivity, and resistance in society In doing so, it reframes video art – the most ubiquitous and yet most understudied art form of recent decades – as an urgent socio-political tool that is increasingly popular among contemporary artists as a means of exploring a broad range of social issues, from politics and identity, to the body and technologies of self-representation
Analysing a diverse selection of case studies from the 1960s up to the present day, covering the work of Yoko Ono, Gillian Wearing, Ryan Trecartin, Tracey Emin, Anatasia Klose, and Heath Franco, among others, the book brings together theory and practice to look afresh at contemporary video art through a Foucauldian lens It also brings the analysis of video art up to date by showing how social media and digital self representation has informed and further politicized time-based art practices
Confessional Video Art and Subjectivity shows how forms of confessional discourse not only play an important function in the construction of subjectivity but also open spaces for personal resistance and agency within contemporary video art As a result, it offers researchers of contemporary art practice, and media and cultural studies, an updated framework through which to view this constantly-evolving genre and a deeper understanding of wider contemporary video practices

Napoleonic Objects and their Afterlives
Art, Culture and Heritage, 1821-present
Edited
by
Matilda Greig,
National Army Museum, London, UK & Nicole Cochrane, Tate Britain, UK
Two centuries after Napoleon Bonaparte’s death, this edited volume brings together a diverse group of historians, art historians, and museum professionals to critically examine the enduring power of visual and material culture in the making of Napoleonic memory
This book investigates the material objects and cultural forms that Napoleon inspired through a range of themes These include art collecting, the circulation and display of objects, political and imperial symbolism, and the flexibility and ambiguity of Napoleon’s enduring legacy The essays examine how and why, Napoleon continues to escape much historical and popular censure They explore the ways people have connected with the idea of him: on stage and screen; in museums and galleries; and by gathering items said to have belonged to him, right down to his toothbrush and locks of his hair
Napoleonic items can be official or personal, serious or comical, luxury or disposable, yet little work has been done to bring together these diverse cultural histories into conversation with one another With its broad, multi-disciplinary approach, including perspectives from art history, film studies, cultural history, and museum curation, the book provides a deep critical insight into the cult of personality surrounding Napoleon and its effect on our understanding of celebrity culture today and in the future
Includes an additional foreword by Napoleon’s biographer, Ruth Scurr, author of In Gardens and Shadows (2021)

Historical Dictionary of Impressionism
Frances Fowle, University of Edinburgh & Hannah Halliwell, University of Edinburgh
In their day the French Impressionists were met with criticism and even disbelief, yet today their paintings are admired and collected worldwide The leading members of the group included Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Alfred Sisley, who dedicated themselves to working in oil paints out of doors, to capturing the transient effects of light and weather and depicting the society in which they lived These artists challenged the traditions of the French Academy, bringing about a revolution in art during a period of enormous political and social change
Historical Dictionary of Impressionism contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography, as well as practical information on the eight Impressionist exhibitions The dictionary section comprises cross-referenced entries on the French Impressionists, the locations they worked in (both in France and further afield), their predecessors and followers, and their models, critics and dealers It also contains useful entries on key political events and figures, as well as the places of entertainment that sprang up all over Paris in the ‘belle époque’ This book is designed to appeal to students, researchers and the general reader

Drawn Together
Illustration, Community and Collective World-Making
Luise Vormittag, Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, UK
Illustrators are increasingly connecting with community groups and members of the public to explore links between people, local knowledge and image making practices This raises a number of questions: What processes are set in motion when illustrators seek to engage with community? How can illustration bring to light the concerns, interests and challenges of a group of people? And can illustration help us think about the conditions of sociability more generally?
Luise Vormittag argues that these questions go to the core of what it means to be political Using both her own work and other illustrators’ projects as case studies Vormittag suggests that participatory illustration is a particularly effective medium for illuminating and reflecting on our social interdependence Rather than accepting conventional, often nostalgic or identitarian notions of community, she positions it as a shared practice of communication and collaborative sense-making Illustrations that refer to collective matters of concern can be the catalyst, focal point and trace of relational and dialogic interactions
By intertwining illustration practice with European philosophy and drawing on ideas from ethnography, translation studies and theories of the public sphere, Vormittag offers new conceptual pathways for rethinking the practice and potential of illustration
Bodies and Space in Architectural Drawing Line, Movement and Scale
Marian Macken, University of Auckland, NZ, Carl Douglas, Te Wananga Aronui o Tamaki Makau Rau & Auckland University of Technology, NZ
Envisioning architectural drawing as a full-scale, bodily, and spatial practice, Marian Macken and Carl Douglas explore how architects imagine, perceive, and shape space through drawing, positioning the body not just as a subject but as an active medium for design
Bodies and Space in Architectural Drawing challenges conventional scale relationships and advocates for full-scale, performative drawing methods that expand the boundaries of architectural practice Drawing is defined as a verb: a matter of time and duration Drawings are inhabited, present, and embodied redefining how space is measured, represented, and understood Through case studies and examples, the authors examine diverse approaches to architectural drawing, including motion-capture and immersive technologies, analogue and digital methods of scanning, and gestural drawing They highlight how drawing can be inhabited by both the drawer and the viewer, offering a dynamic, immersive experience
Crucially, this book reinstates drawing as a spatial, temporal, and bodily act It reframes the role of scaled artefacts models, maps, and drawings as intermediaries that mobilise architectural thinking Rather than treating the body as a static reference point, it explores how moving, thinking bodies generate and reside within drawings
Designing Temporal Ecologies
A New Framework for More-than-Human Worlds
Edited
by Larissa Pschetz, University of Edinburgh, UK
Bringing together a collection of methodological and practical studies, this volume explores how design could define more equal notions of ecological time It provides a new framework for environmental design practice that departs from a critique of the separation between human and other-than-human times, moving towards entangled multispecies temporalities
In Western industrialised societies, the times of humans and of the natural world are often considered as belonging to different realms While human life is regarded as progressive and accelerated, other species are described as following timescales that are cyclical and slow-changing Highlighting the problematic nature of this conceptual division, which reinforces the disruptive impact of anthropogenic action, a team of design scholars and practitioners identify ways of approaching more-than-human times, suggesting sustainable ways of living in the world They examine a range of morethan-human relationships, weaving together case studies on gardens, rivers, wetlands, and indigenous and contested lands, which span across different geographical contexts including Scotland, the Netherlands, Finland, Palestine and Brazil
Through a design-led approach, this volume draws attention to the plurality of times in the world and makes the case for an ethical and political agenda that calls us to challenge temporal power inequalities It reframes the ways we think about, experience, imagine and interfere in more-than-human times so that design can ultimately be more aligned with planetary processes, co-exist with more diverse ecologies and find its way into more sustainable futures

The Power of Maybes Machines, Uncertainty and Design Futures
Betti Marenko, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London, UK
In a world of endless predictions and precision algorithms, The Power of Maybes offers a daring new way forward
What if uncertainty isn’t a problem to solve, but a gift? This book reclaims hesitation, ambiguity and not-knowing as powerful tools to resist the rigid control of digital systems Where machines seek to lock down knowledge, capture potential, dictate futures and foreclose possibilities, The Power of Maybes presents the radical idea that embracing uncertainty is essential in our age of planetary computation and offers ways of cultivating it as a form of resistance
By reframing the unknown as a powerful resource, Marenko offers a bold approach to living and thinking alongside machines without surrendering to their grip Blending philosophy, design and critical tech studies, it challenges dystopian fears and utopian hopes about technology, and champions new ways of being open, ungridded, unscaled It’s a call to cultivate the unknown and nurture potential For those ready to reclaim their agency in an algorithmic age, The Power of Maybes is a guide to living with oceanic uncertainty and finding power in it

The New Dress Detective
A Practical Guide to Object-based Research in Fashion, revised Ingrid E Mida, Independent Art and Dress Historian, Artist and Curator, Canada
The New Dress Detective updates and expands this highly regarded practical guide to analysing fashion objects.
Featuring seven completely new case studies – including an 18th-century gown, a man’s 19th-century tailored jacket and pantaloons, a 19th-century boy's frock, a woman’s Edo period uchikake, a 1927 homemade wedding dress, a Dior dress ensemble, and a mass-manufactured uniform of the 1970s – this invaluable guide has been revised throughout, to enhance its usefulness for readers and to reflect the state of the field
The New Dress Detective offers tools to unravel the hidden stories in garments with a carefully developed research methodology specific to dress, with easy-to-use checklists to guide the reader through the process Beautifully illustrated, the varied case studies of fashionable western and non-western garments articulate the methodological framework for the process, illustrate the use of the checklists, and show how evidence from the garment itself can be used to corroborate theories of dress or to engage in alternative modes of interpretation such as making, wearing or other creative outputs

Animal
Simona Segre- Reinach
The fashion industry has long exploited animals for their materials, whether fur, leather, silk, wool or feathers – so how can we find other ways of working with, or without, animals in the production of clothing? This volume in the Fashion in Action series of short books, which champion change on global issues in fashion, introduces and challenges our problematic reliance on animal products in fashion, calling for more caring practices that work towards post-animal fashion
Simona Segre-Reinach argues that fashion, with its far-reaching influence and power to communicate, can lead other industries toward genuinely inclusive sustainability Divided into three sections, the book first looks at the fashion system’s entrenched use of animal-based materials in garment production Section two explores pathways to kinder, next-generation materials that break away from animal exploitation The final section advocates for a complete reimagining of fashion through a lens of empathy and respect for all beings
Featuring practices and ideas from around the globe and with views from philosophers, animal rights activists, scientists and artists intersecting with designers, stylists, companies and consumers, this book inspires a shift towards a sustainable future that respects life in all its forms
Masked
Anonymity, Empowerment, and Identity in Fashion and Popular Culture
Laini Burton
What is a mask? A disguise or a means of protection? Laini Burton’s comprehensive examination of masking in Western culture explores the mask as an enduring tool of personal, political and social transformation
Beginning in the Middle Ages, Burton explores how key examples such as Venetian carnival and English masquerade sit at a historical crossroads between medieval masking traditions and early modern cultural shifts These historical precedents reveal how politics, social order, performance, and identity continue to drive masking practices today Turning to contemporary culture, Burton evaluates the mask’s varied uses in club culture, haute couture, celebrity performances, masked protests, social media, and digital innovations including deepfakes Burton demonstrates how masks enable anonymity, reinvention, catharsis, celebration, and unity Chapters consider how masks function as material objects and symbolic devices, challenging assumptions about authenticity, surface and depth, visibility and recognition
Masked: Anonymity, Empowerment, and Identity in Fashion and Popular Culture urges us to reconsider how identities are constructed, maintained, and performed, identifying the mask as a paradoxical mechanism that not only obscures identity, but actively constructs, mediates, and transforms it
