Borderless Education

A Pedagogical Framework for Cultural Responsiveness and Global Competence Edited by Christina Wright Fields, Novea McIntosh & Rochonda Nenonene The context is clear, educators must develop comprehensive global competencies that are grounded in culturally responsive foundations to create classrooms that are inclusive and offer a curriculum that is rich in identities, relevant, and borderless. This book builds on the work of scholars who have called for culturally relevant, responsive, and sustaining pedagogies while centering the importance of global competencies in education. The authors share a new integrative pedagogical framework that bridges the gap between culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogies and global teacher education. culturally centered global competencies in teacher preparation and classrooms. Each contributed chapter ends with a series of questions designed to elicit critical thinking; promote the development of human-centered pedagogies; and inspire work that supports inclusion, belonging, and acceptance.

Che Guevara, Paulo Freire, and the Pedagogy of Revolution, Classics Edition Peter McLaren, Chapman University, USA Che Guevara, Paulo Freire, and the Pedagogy of Revolution examines what is currently at stake—culturally, politically, and educationally—in contemporary global capitalist society. Written by one of the world's most renowned critical educators, this book evaluates the message of Che Guevara and Paulo Freire for contemporary politics in general and education in particular. Forcefully argued and eloquently written, Che Guevara, Paulo Freire, and the Pedagogy of Revolution is a clarion call for building a new social order premised on the ideas and philosophy of two of the most important revolutionary figures of this century. Reimagining Educational Justice in the Face of Opposition Altheria Caldera This book invites readers to reimagine a movement for educational justice, one in which justice workers recognize imperialist white supremacist capitalist cis-hetero patriarchy as the broad, interlocking system of domination that continues to oppress historically marginalized students, whose rights are presently being vehemently opposed by those who fear an egalitarian society that no longer privileges whiteness. This work also examines bans on “wokeness,” illustrating the regressive and assaultive nature of current attacks. Important, too, it offers guidance for those seeking direction about how to advance educational justice for all students whose rights are being threatened.

Pupil Premium Plus for Children in Care A Critical Social Justice Analysis

Benjamin Taylor, University of East London, UK Children in care (CiC), or looked after children, in England achieve less well than their non-looked after peers and as such they receive pupil premium plus funding. This book explores how the pupil premium plus is used to support the educational outcomes of CiC, with specific focus on professionals’ planning processes, the supports and interventions funded using pupil premium plus, and how the impact of the funding is tracked and monitored. It draws on empirical data from semi-structured interviews with designated CiC teachers, social workers, and school heads, and document analysis of 20 school pupil premium strategies. Ben Taylor uses educational theory to analyse the data, drawing on humanist theories, social pedagogy and critical pedagogy to identify key themes in the data including race and class. He argues that pupil premium plus is valued by professionals, who care deeply about CiC. Anti-Authoritarian Curriculum Practice Powerful Theories for Teachers

Daniel J. Castner, Jennifer L. Schneider & James G. Henderson The pervasive politicization of education in the United States makes teachers’ work extraordinarily challenging. Decades of bi-partisan accountability-based reform policies and top-down instructional management have conceived of teachers as mere technicians who consume and implement prefabricated curricular plans. Such views fail to recognize the intimate relationship between curriculum and teaching and minimize educators’ professional authority. Anti-Authoritarian Curriculum Practice is for teachers exasperated by contemporary education’s politicized conditions. Instead of identifying specific authoritarian figures or ideologies, this book critiques authoritarian practices—actions that UK July 2025 • US July 2025 176 Pages HB 9781538193976 • £60.00 / $85.00 PB 9781538193983 • £18.99 / $31.00 ePDF 9798765154205 • £17.09 / $27.90 ePub 9781538193990 • £17.09 / $27.90 Bloomsbury Academic

undermine accountability for how power is exercised. It advocates for anti-authoritarian curriculum practices, emphasizing the intellectual and moral responsibilities of professional curricular decision-making. Appreciating that significant decisions are made at school, district, and policy levels without teachers’ meaningful involvement, the authors utilize practical curriculum theorizing to examine commonly overlooked elements of curriculum practice, emphasizing teachers’ direct roles in shaping what is experienced in their classrooms. Readers are introduced to the HI-STAR process, a three-part framework that invites educators to holistically imagine curricular visions (HI), engage in study and teaching activities (ST), and assess student outcomes while reflecting on their practices (AR).

Reclaiming the Artistry of Teaching Edited by Gert Biesta, Maynooth University, Ireland & Ramsey Affifi, University of Edinburgh, UK There is an ongoing tendency in contemporary research, policy and practice to see the teacher as a technician who, with guidance from scientific evidence about ‘what works,’ can become increasingly more effective in bringing about measurable learning outcomes. This book not only shows why a technical understanding of teaching is problematic, but also explores in detail what can be gained from understanding teaching as a situated art that requires the purposeful combination of craft – teachers’ ‘know how’ – and wisdom – the ability to make meaningful judgements about what needs to be done in the always concrete and unique situation of the classroom. The book asks what the artistry of teaching is, how it matters for teaching, what it looks like and feels like for both teachers and students, how the arts can help in deepening our understanding of teaching, who may benefit from the artistry of UK May 2026 • US May 2026 232 Pages • 10 bw illus HB 9781350506589 • £80.00 / $110.00 PB 9781350506572 • £26.99 / $36.95 ePDF 9781350506602 • £24.29 / $33.25 ePub 9781350506596 • £24.29 / $33.25 Bloomsbury Academic

teaching, and what this means for becoming and being a teacher, individually and collectively. The book seeks to provide a meaningful alternative in contemporary discussions about teachers, teaching and the future of teacher education. In addition, the idea of artistry highlights the aesthetic qualities and dimensions of teaching and opens up new ways for understanding teacher formation and teacher development.

How Good Teachers Thrive

Flourishing Long Term in a Noble Profession Ken Badley In How Good Teachers Thrive, the author explores the teaching career as a journey, offering hope and practical strategies to help educators stay grounded in their sense of vocation. While valuable for teachers at all stages, the book is especially helpful for those new to the profession. In the introduction and first two sections, the author examines the current educational landscape—both the external forces shaping schools and the inner lives of teachers. Drawing on Parker Palmer’s language, the text reflects on how educators make meaning of their work. Section III breaks the journey into three stages: early, mid, and late career. The author connects research on teacher flourishing with broader studies on living and aging well, and includes stories from over 100 teachers about what helps them UK January 2026 • US January 2026 232 Pages HB 9781475874716 • £70.00 / $95.00 PB 9781475874723 • £24.99 / $34.95 ePDF 9798765160954 • £22.49 / $31.45 ePub 9781475874730 • £22.49 / $31.45 Bloomsbury Academic

thrive. In Section IV, the book emphasizes the importance of community and encourages readers to build a personal support team. Finally, Section V steps back to reflect on the habits and mindsets that support long-term growth and joy in the profession.

The Extinction of Responsibility and Character Brett J. Novick This timely and provocative manuscript addresses a critical concern shared by many in today’s educational landscape. It offers a compelling argument for recalibrating the roles of educators, administrators, parents, and students by restoring clear boundaries and returning accountability to where it belongs—with the student. Especially in the wake of COVID-19, when traditional expectations and responsibilities have become blurred, this book urges a reexamination of what it means to be responsible in a school setting and beyond. Unlike character education programs that treat responsibility as a teachable trait, this work positions it as a systemic issue— one that must be tackled holistically across families, schools, and society at large. By confronting these hard truths, the book aims to inspire educators and stakeholders to reestablish shared responsibility in order to better prepare today’s students for the realities of the adult world. childhood workforce have predominantly focused on the under-representation of men and the recuperative outcomes promised through the inclusion of men. This book is concerned with the ways a gendered workforce can be re-imagined when the boundaries of research are stretched beyond mere human inclusion and attention is paid to ordinary and unassuming relationships that encompass everyday experiences in the nursery. By employing feminist theorisations that foreground materiality, affect, discourse, place and temporalities, the book demonstrates ways in which gender can be understood differently in the early childhood workforce.

Dialectic Special Pedagogy

Supporting the Transitions of People with Disabilities and Atypical Development Edited by Louise Bøttcher, Aarhus University, Denmark & Charlotte Mathiassen, Aarhus University, Denmark This book offers theoretical and practical discussion on the inclusion of students with disabilities and learning impairments within the learning environments and beyond. It explores how social relations and social activities can support the personal and social transitions of children, young people and adults in need of specialized support. Written by academics based in Australia, Canada, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK, the contributors take a cultural-historical and dialectical approach as a starting point for special pedagogy. This approach enables special pedagogy to rise above biological-essentialist, environmental-social-training and purely sociological approaches and to focusing on development as a psychological as well as a social phenomenon. The chapters cover a range topics including deaf education, primary and secondary disabilities, play, mediation, incarcerated youth and mental illness. The Handbook of Peer Tutoring Edited by Daniel Sanford, Michelle Steiner & Russ Hodges The Handbook of Peer Tutoring is the authoritative resource on the emerging interdisciplinary field of peer tutoring in higher education. Addressing the multiple audiences of undergraduate tutors in advanced trainings, students immersing themselves in the research of learning and writing centers, professionals seeking to understand the history and current state of the field, and researchers specializing in peer-led learning, the book gathers in one volume the voices that define the current state of the field. In doing so, it brings authors and ideas from previously discrete areas of study (learning centers, writing centers, the scholarship of teaching & learning, communication, composition, developmental education, psychology, and others) into conversation with one another, and advances the case for a single, shared scholarship of post-secondary peer tutoring that spans numerous disciplines, professional communities, and continents. Higher Education Is History

How the Legacy of Exclusion Impedes Socioeconomic Mobility Brendan Cushing-Daniels The legacy of exclusion within higher education shapes current perceptions and practices in academia; it is also the essential lens through which to view the present reactionary climate against efforts supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in higher education and elsewhere. For centuries, access to higher education was reserved for wealthy white men. This book details and counters a number of the most strident criticisms of higher education and illustrates that many of these criticisms are inextricably tied to the opening of higher education to women, students of color, and others whose identities have historically been excluded. Ethical Dilemmas in Educational Research

BERA Case Studies for Researchers by Researchers Edited by Alison Fox Drawing on the real voices and experiences of researchers, this book illustrates how the British Educational Research Association (BERA) Ethical Guidelines for Educational Research can be used to appraise research studies ethically. Researchers have choices when they design, conduct and report their research. These choices have consequences for others – funders, sponsors, those who facilitate access to research settings, those in the research settings, participants and the researchers. Sometimes the consequences can be anticipated and positive consequences can be maximised in the research design and negative consequences minimised. Sometimes the consequences only become apparent as the research unfolds. This book presents a series of case studies following researchers in their decision-making through studies in a range of settings to consider different ways to deal with ethical dilemmas raised. The authors draw on their experiences to explain researcher thinking and how this relates to enacting values, pointing to relevant advice in the BERA ethical guidelines. They also explore choices not taken, considering the possible implications from such decisions, and how other researchers might have made different decisions based on different positionality. As well as thought provoking case studies, the book puts forward questions for readers to relate to their own research contexts and recommended reading for further thinking about the issues raised.

The Narrative Inquiry Primer

An Introductory Guide to Experiential Research Jacob Neumann The Narrative Inquiry Primer is an introductory guide to the philosophical roots, practical strategies, and writing conventions of narrative inquiry. This experiential, qualitative research method challenges technical-rational approaches to educational research by valuing context, experience, and relational engagement. The method utilizes long-term fieldwork and close researcher-participant relationships to explore how stories structure memory, identity, and meaning. It has gained prominence across a range of fields, including education, medicine, law, and many others and is essential for capturing and communicating the richness of human experiences within contexts. This book provides an introduction to narrative inquiry by addressing fundamental questions for conceptualizing, planning, conducting, and writing narrative inquiry studies, as well as offering examples that researchers can use to assist their own decision-making. Data Ethics

How Educators Can Use Data Effectively and Responsibly Ellen B. Mandinach Data Ethics: How Educators Can Use Data Effectively and Responsibly describes the concept of data ethics, which has become an increasingly important topic in education practice, in part due to the proliferation of diverse data sources and the growing complexity of students. It is important for educators to know how to use data both effectively and appropriately. Educators are often faced with accountability pressures that may cause them to make decisions that are sometime problematic. This book describes what data ethics are and how new technologies, especially those based on artificial intelligence can challenge the appropriate use of data. Teaching Writing Through Journaling

Journaling as a Tool for Learning and Well-Being Kathleen Volk Miller Writing helps students identify, regulate, and express their emotions, which not only fosters emotional resilience but also improves writing skills and academic achievement. Journaling can increase students’ self-awareness, confidence, and ability to process complex thoughts. Research shows that students who write regularly perform better academically than those who don’t, as writing strengthens conceptual understanding and critical thinking. The first book in a new series on teaching writing, Teaching Writing through Journaling presents practices that make writing a daily habit, helping students internalize its value for learning and well-being. Instructors who engage in these practices benefit as well—emotionally and physically. It's time to flip the script: success doesn't create happiness; happiness fuels success. Designed for both seasoned poetry lovers and hesitant beginners, the book provides clear, practical guides for reading and writing poems. Smart Writing

Demonstrable and Measurable Skills for More Sophisticated Writing John Mauk Writing teachers of all grade levels have been called upon to increase their students’ cognitive power. Outcomes across institutions, districts, and states emphasize the need for richness, depth, complexity, rigor, sophistication, or critical thinking in student writing. Yet that quality—no matter how it gets characterized—remains a challenge for both teachers and students. How can teachers most effectively explain, model, and assess such an evasive quality? Smart Writing: Demonstrable and Measurable Skills for More Sophisticated Writing offers a path forward. It details a range of powerful strategies that students can apply directly. The specifics offered here are not vague descriptors. They are moves that get worked out in written passages. They can be adopted and shaped according to assignment, topic, and each writer’s comfort level. UK January 2026 • US January 2026 176 Pages HB 9781475874747 • £70.00 / $95.00 PB 9781475874754 • £24.99 / $34.95 ePDF 9798765161104 • £22.49 / $31.45 ePub 9781475874761 • £22.49 / $31.45 Bloomsbury Academic

The goal in each chapter is to eradicate the mysteries of sophisticated writing—to offer samples, activities, and prompts that make student projects richer. In this sense, Smart Writing is not a book for those teaching only gifted, advanced, or highly prepared students. It’s for all teachers trying desperately to help students with something that seems now universally valued.

Consulting Students on Classroom Practice, ‘Good’ Teaching and Teacher Performance A Critical Account of Student Voice in Contemporary Schools Craig Skerritt, University of Manchester, UK Consulting Students on Classroom Practice, ‘Good’ Teaching, and Teacher Performance is about the consultation of students on teaching and learning matters in schools, as part of typical school life as opposed to students being consulted as part of a project that includes some kind of external support. Craig Skerritt makes not only a conceptual contribution by providing new thinking tools and a new way of understanding and articulating student voice in relation to classroom practice, and by developing and presenting a heuristic device to aid research on student voice and classroom practice, but a series of empirical contributions by reporting on interview data with a range of school-based actors to spotlight existing views, practices and issues, and to call attention to hopes, desires, and fears for the future. The book provides a critical account of student voice in contemporary schools. Student voice is not taken at face value or accepted as being undisputedly positive, nor are schools or the people in them treated as homogenous entities devoid of context. Significantly, researcher subjectivity is central vis-à-vis the generation, examination, interpretation, and presentation of the empirical data. There is no claim to objectivity in this book and it is subjectivity that comes to the fore — through what Skerritt coins the ‘I(nterest) behind this research’, major emphasis is placed on his own experiences shaping his outlook. Skerritt occupies a certain vantage point and sees student voice through a particular lens, and this is reflected in the contents of this book.

Schooling Reimagined

Educating for a More Ethical Society David H Hargreaves, University of Cambridge, UK If the society that lies ahead is to be a better and more ethical one, schools play a key role in its realisation. Since the 1944 Education Act implemented at the end of World War II in Europe, schooling became dominated by the idea of a meritocracy for its function in promoting social mobility. In this book, David Hargreaves explores ways in which schooling might be reimagined to strengthen the moral and ethical base of schooling, to cultivate in students the excellences of intellect and character that underlie deep happiness. Queers Teach This!

Queer and Trans Pleasures, Politics, and Pedagogues Adam J. Greteman, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, USA In this open access book, philosopher of education Adam Greteman offers commentary on five lessons queers teach: transparency, inconvenience, others, hatred, and coming into. Intentionally idiosyncratic, each of these lessons takes seriously the work of teaching, the work of teachers, and the complex realities that unfold around LGBTQ+ issues and lives as they enter educational conversations. These conversations are conditioned by contexts and communities that make bold proclamations difficult, but also point toward possibilities rooted in specifics. Combined, these five lessons provide commentary on an educational project that forefronts queers and their practices amid complex and changing realities. Recognizing the mutual importance of theory and practices, each chapter tacks between practical concerns that are part of education as it exists day to day and theoretical insights that intertwine and intervene in those everyday practical realities. Radical Politics and Education

Yet, Greteman offers no prescriptions for teaching, nor an overarching theory. Rather, Greteman takes up each “this” that

Literature and Ethics in High School English Classes Reading Together with Moral Vision

Ross Collin, Virginia Commonwealth University, USA This book offers a defence of ethical reading in secondary school English classes at a time when reformers and policy makers are trying to reorganize English language arts around technical skills or politics. Ross Collin shows how students and teachers use literature as a venue for exploring their own and others’ ethical ideas and practices and argues that moral inquiry in English class is a distinctly social endeavour. The book draws ideas from English education and moral philosophy. From English education, Collin explores social reading, or what Louise Rosenblatt named ‘transaction’, looking at texts commonly taught in secondary school English, including Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and Jacqueline Woodson’s Brown Girl Dreaming. From philosophy, he draws on arguments about moral vision and literature developed by Iris Murdoch, Martha Nussbaum, and Nora Hämäläinen, and develops ideas, tacit in English education, about reading with moral vision. Postcolonial Education and National Identity An Arendtian Re-imagination

Rowena Azada-Palacios, Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines Recognizing the strategic role that national identities play in post-colonial struggles for justice, this book conceptualizes a new approach to teaching national identity that, following Hannah Arendt, emphasizes children’s ability to renew culture. The book uses the Philippine colonial experience as a case study, and includes a genealogy of Hannah Arendt’s concept of the ’social’, including an analysis of how she used this idea to explore the role that schools play within the political community. Azada-Palacios problematizes the way that national identity is valued as an educational goal in Philippine schools and the way that Philippine citizenship education continues to aspire towards a homogeneity of culture. Through an examination of colonial-era documents, she traces this characteristic of colonial history, and identifies this aspiration as an unreflective perpetuation of American colonial educational policy that has not been sufficiently criticized. Latin America Writes Back

Praxiologies in Language Education Edited by Juliana Reichert Assunção Tonelli, Alex Alves Egido & Karina Oliveira de Paula In Latin America, and other historically exploited former colonies, people were told to unlearn their language and culture in order to acquire what some privileged voices classify as “valid” or “legitimate” ways of thinking. Throughout history, various teaching approaches and methodologies have emerged, each bringing unique insights to foreign language classrooms all over the world. These methods have played a pivotal role in shaping language pedagogy, enhancing learners' experiences, and fostering communication in an increasingly interconnected world. As societies become aware of the need for cultural inclusivity and equity, educators are recognizing the importance of adopting praxiologies that honor diverse languages and perspectives. In the last couple of years, language educators have seen an unprecedented expansion of discussions related to the questioning of naturalized practices in language education. Nowadays, these questions are the core of language teacher education programs in Latin America. Educators have developed and implemented another way experiencing and assessing language education; one that is not focused on the mere application of predetermined methods and techniques, but that is born from—and sensitive to—the local contexts, and which considers context-dependent struggles, hopes, needs, and agency (or lack thereof). In such a manner, the concept of praxiologies seems to be central, as understood by Paulo Freire as the inseparable connection between action and reflection.

Pedagogy of Freedom

Ethics, Democracy, and Civic Courage Paulo Freire In Pedagogy of Freedom Paulo Freire travels ever more deeply into the territory where learning and activism are the essence of human life. This profound book shows why an engaged way of learning and teaching is central to the creation of the individual, culture, and history. Freire finds in today's emerging global society a new context in which education cannot be indifferent to the reproduction of dominant ideologies and the interrogation of them. He argues against "progressive" liberalism and its passive acceptance of a world where unemployment and hunger must inevitably co-exist with opulence. It centres on the text of the author’s award-wining one-person play, Marília, about the death of his three-year-old sister during the Brazilian dictatorship (1964-1985), his gender identity, childhood trauma, and experiences as an undocumented immigrant in the USA. The play exemplifies many of Freire ideas and Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed is also drawn heavily upon. Alongside the play is boxed commentary with definitions and explanations of key concepts, to clearly narrate Freire’s and Boal’s teachings. Connecting the Dots of Accreditation

Leadership, Coherence, and Continuous Improvement Barry R. Groves & Marilyn S. George The second edition of Connecting the Dots of Accreditation offers a significant update, with approximately 35% new content and comprehensive revisions to the original text. This edition expands its scope with timely new chapters on generative AI and educational technology—featuring a contribution by Christian Talbot, CEO of the Middle States Association—as well as critical topics such as social-emotional learning, the politicization of accreditation, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), international accreditation, and the rise of online and hybrid schools. As the only published book focused exclusively on K–12 school accreditation in the United States, this volume remains an essential resource for educators and school leaders navigating an evolving educational landscape. Settling Conflict in Rural New York Schools Case Studies of Education Reform Casey Thomas Jakubowski This book examines the history of conflict in education through the lens of specific case studies from schools in rural areas of New York. Education has historically been a major source of conflict among citizens, voters, and residents in the United States. From the colonists in New England’s efforts to educate their children in the late 1800s, to the debates over mask mandates at schools emerging from Covid-19, the dissonance between pro-local democracy national narratives and the active suppression of community rights exists in every state. Contemporary conflicts in education and politics include the question Studies in Urban–Rural Dynamics UK February 2026 • US February 2026 186 Pages • 10 tables PB 9781666929959 • £28.99 / $39.95 HB 9781666968309 • £85.00 / $115.00 ePDF 9798216258339 • £76.50 / $103.50 ePub 9781978765818 • £76.50 / $103.50 Bloomsbury Academic

of what and how to teach history, with some politically motivated groups demonizing critical race theory, inclusive civics, and history education. Utilizing local and state archives, newspapers, and eyewitness accounts, and challenging the consensus narrative that prioritizes the elite’s viewpoints, this book expands research on the history of educational reform post-World War II outside of the urban focus predominant in the field and challenges the traditional rural deficit narrative.

Public Spaces, Politics, and Policy

Historical Entanglements with Irrational Momentism Edited by Todd Alan Price & Morna McDermott McNulty This books takes a deep dive into the historic, sociopolitical, and economic interests that have resulted in a frontal assault on the very governance of public education. Recent decades have seen dramatic changes in the landscape of American public education, including the closure of local schools, elimination of teachers’ unions, and local school board takeover attempts. In order to explore the social and political motivations behind these changes, the contributors address questions such as: What tactics are being used to drive this paradigm shift where teachers are the enemy, and schools are harming kids? What events in this sociopolitical moment right now make it ripe for dismantling the democratic experiment of public education? In an age of sound bites and instant news, how can the nuanced—and sometimes hypocritical—narrative supporting public education compete for attention with the UK October 2025 • US October 2025 298 Pages • 5 bw illus PB 9781666977714 • £28.99 / $39.95 HB 9781666977691 • £90.00 / $120.00 ePDF 9798216201458 • £81.00 / $108.00 ePub 9781978764552 • £81.00 / $108.00 Bloomsbury Academic

Problems and Possibilities of Neoliberal Education Reforms Accountability, High-Stakes Testing, and Inequality

Mustafa Toprak, Sharjah Education Academy in the United Arab Emirates Neoliberal education reforms promise (but often don't succeed) to improve student outcomes and provide more equitable educational opportunities to students with different backgrounds. They hold schools accountable for their performance through high-stakes testing and linking performance to rewards and sanctions, and by empowering parents. This book presents a critical and objective appraisal of these neoliberalist education reforms. Mustafa Toprak considers the practical elements of neoliberal reforms, including voucher systems, choice, accountability, competition within and between schools, educational inequalities, and high-stakes testing, and in doing this, contributes to social justice debates and the idea of education as a common good. He uses reforms in Chile as a case study UK June 2026 • US June 2026 200 Pages • 10 bw illus HB 9781350375758 • £90.00 / $120.00 PB 9781350375796 • £28.99 / $39.95 ePDF 9781350375765 • £81.00 / $108.00 ePub 9781350375772 • £81.00 / $108.00 Bloomsbury Academic

and offers a critique of its neoliberal educational reforms. Rather than discrediting all the central tenets of neoliberal education, Toprak considers the pros and cons of these reforms for students, teachers, schools, and societies and proposes new reforms to ensure that policies accurately and responsively address the needs of all stakeholders.

Global Education in Ireland

Critical Histories and Future Directions Edited by Eilish Dillon, Maynooth University, Ireland, Niamh Gaynor, Dublin City University, Ireland, Gerard McCann, St. Mary's University College, Northern Ireland & Stephen McCloskey This open access book brings together leading global education (GE) practitioners and academics to, for the first time, provide a history of GE in Ireland. Ireland is regarded as a leader in the field of GE worldwide, with a rich history going back to the 1970s. Despite this, there is a lack of reflection on its role and contribution to GE internationally. This book bridges this gap, critically exploring the history of global education policy and practice in the Irish context from different perspectives from across the education spectrum in Ireland, and internationally. The contributors explore the philosophical, pedagogical and globalisation influences on GE, as well as policy trends and curriculum developments. The range of topics discussed include: GE and the sustainable development goals; global citizenship education; activism; solidarity; and critical pedagogy. Advances in Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship UK April 2026 • US April 2026 302 Pages • 10 bw illus HB 9781350380387 • £95.00 / $130.00 PB 9781350380424 • £28.99 / $39.95 ePDF 9781350380394 • £0.00 / $0.00 ePub 9781350380400 • £0.00 / $0.00 Bloomsbury Academic

The role of institutions and other stakeholders are discussed as well as the challenges for transformative practice. Alongside thematic chapters, practical case studies are introduced which illustrate GE practice over time. Relevant to practitioners of global education in Ireland and beyond, the book puts forward a critical, radical and decolonial GE. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by Maynooth University.
