BLÅ STATION is a family business based in Åhus on the south-east coast of Sweden, where the see is forever restless, just like us. We design and manufacture furniture that we ourselves like and believe deserves a place on the market.
The company was established in 1986 by furniture designer Börge Lindau, our father, together with us.
At heart we nurture an uncompromising ambition to work exclusively with materials, techniques and industrial processes that are not hazardous in production, to the user, or harmful to the environment.
The development work continues unabated, with every new product born from a firm conviction that the task at hand should be solved by a good-humoured joie de vivre, tempered with a sense of responsibility.
Johan & Mimi
The highly successful design team Lindau & Lindekrantz received the Nordic Design Award in 1984 for a furniture series called Duett, created for the furniture company Lammhults. The diploma itself was a perforated seat mounted on a black background in a golden frame.
The award triggered something unexpected in Börge Lindau — who had sworn never again in his life to design “just another chair”. But instead, he went home and obsessively began sketching an entirely new furniture series called OBLADO, built around a round ring in compression moulded birch veneer. Together with his son Johan Lindau, they developed not only a collection of prototype furniture, but also the entire framework around it: tooling, pricing, materials, suppliers, and production calculations — all to make life easier for the intended manufacturer.
The first presentation took place in late autumn 1985 for Lammhults design team, with whom Börge had worked closely for more than twenty years. They loved the OBLADO series but wanted to select just a few favourite pieces from the much larger system. Börge replied, more or less: “As usual, you don’t understand anything”.
At that point, Lammhults’ owner, Kenneth Ståhl, stepped in and said: “Why don’t you just do it yourselves?”
It had genuinely never crossed their minds. The discussions started immediately after returning home that Friday evening and continued non-stop until after Sunday dinner, when Börge’s wife Karin suddenly said: “I think it’s a great idea. Just do it”.
A bit surprising. It was only later Börge and Johan realized that this project would finally save Karin from cleaning fish and peeling potatoes for the rest of her life. Börge had long nurtured a dream of opening a restaurant, SILL & DESIGN, serving every imaginable kind of herring — a place where you could also buy everything from chairs and tables to glasses, knives, forks, and jars of homemade pickled herring.
Sometimes, history begins through a perfect accumulation of coincidences. Blå Station was founded in 1986.

BLÅ STATION has experienced two centuries, a millennium shift and forty years. Many interesting design dialogues have been held, many fantastic meetings have been experienced, and many briefs have been formulated.
We do our own analysis of the world around us, looking for problems that we hope to solve in our own way.
In collaboration with many gifted designers, we have over the years presented and put into production products that we consider to be relevant and that offer something new in their approach to material, function, industrial process or form.
In this small product catalogue with almost all the products we have developed since the start, you can see many that are no longer in production, some that never went into production but also things that were designed 40 years ago and are still being manufactured. That’s how we work, with a focus on sustainability, and longevity, where we give our furniture the best conditions to be around for a long time. Not only do they have high quality, they also maintain high visual quality, because if the furniture is to be around for as long as they can... You should like having them around too!
