CAPSTONE JOURNEYS Langley School District Develops & Embraces 21st Century Pedagogies that Prepare Students for Living in a Gig Economy. continues in grade 10 with a Capstone project proposal, and then the execution and presentation of the project happens from grades 10-12. As part of the Capstone presentation, students share their Transition Plans and artifacts of their K-12 Learning Journey. The Capstone journey supports real life learning through a choice of: field studies & research, event planning, passion projects, occupational & entrepreneurial projects, leadership service projects or plans for successful living.

apstone, defined as the highest achievement or most important action in a series of actions, appropriately reflects the graduation requirement for BC students
To prepare for the implementation of Capstone, the Langley School District has created a culture of extreme learning. As the importance of creativity, entrepreneurship and innovation come to light, Langley educators and students are starting to reap the benefits of learning beyond the confines of the classroom. Crafted following five years of intense collaboration by students and educators throughout the Langley School District and in consultation with five surrounding districts, the Langley Capstone journey has emerged.
Think about it! Suddenly, students take on self-advocacy of learning and direct their own project pathways according to their passions and interests. At the base of all of the learning, the key question they are now asking themselves is: Not- What do I want to be? But- Who do I want to be? The difference is profound!
Here’s how it works Students are encouraged to delve deep into their personal reflections to discover their passions and curiosities. The Capstone process starts in grade 8 & 9 with investigation into inquiry questions,
It is an in-depth exploration of study that, with the help of community mentors and industry partners, enhances and enables the learning of new skills that are personalized to the individual learner. It is a complete application of real-world projects!
Examples of Capstone Ingenuity The prosthesis with an articulating joint An avid soccer player with a hope to become a mechanical engineer: his two passions inspire him to search out a mentor, to work out a complicated series of designs and prototypes to develop a viable and working prosthesis and an articulating joint that will enable disabled persons to participate in soccer as a sport.
Using different types of wood to craft differences in sound in a guitar A student reconnected with an extended family member as a mentor to learn the craft of building a guitar by hand. As part of the learning journey, they experimented with varying types of wood to create different types of sound. They co-constructed a guitar - an acoustically brilliant specimen
of instrumental genius which has inspired the student to consider this craft as a career choice.
The Ultimate in Decorum With a deep interest in interior design, a student made her way downtown to explore the labyrinths of the Vancouver Interior Design Show Exhibition at BC Place. The emboldened student successfully seconded a mentor at the show to help her negotiate an ambitious project. She crafted architectural designs, a 3D model of her dream house, collected supply samples, mood ideas, colour theory swatches and then set up and decorated one of the rooms from her house as an exhibition of her learning.
Writing a Children’s book that explains Cancer therapy to children A very involved and empathic sister learned through her younger sister’s ordeal with cancer that the process of treatments is often not understood by patients and families. In an effort to better educate herself and her family on the Cancer Therapies she wrote and illustrated a children’s book to teach others what to expect in language that can be more easily understood by all ages.

The Take Aways These examples are just a few of many very deep and meaningful learning journeys that are emerging in just our first year of implementation. Remember, it is not just about the end product that is produced; it is about the spiral of inquiry: the learning, feedback, reflection, redirecting work plans, time management of the project, and learning about the importance of mentors and networking that is involved within career areas. This is real. This is meaningful. This is learning today.

15th ANNUAL GRAND PRIX GALA Overcoming Obstacles There are fundraisers and then there are FUNDRAISERS. The Langley School District Foundation’s 15th Annual Grand Prix Gala is one of the latter. And this is why? While sipping on award-winning wines, munching on gourmet hor d’oeuvres, shopping for rare and unique treasures at the silent auction and entering to win a weekend get-away, guests are face-to-face with a parade of snorting, thundering equines as they gallop, leap and overcome obstacles in their quest for victory. The spectacle is rare and magnificent. You are in attendance at Thunderbird Show Park – rated as one of the top three tracks in the world. This is where elite equestrians come to compete and vie for international status and Olympian recognition. Your front row seats are not to be taken lightly. People like Bill Gates vie for the premium vista. But there’s more! Guests arrive in their rural chic regalia – anything from designer jeans and gems to carefree frocks and magnificent hats. They are instantly greeted and ushered to their reserved tables on a sun-drenched patio. Overlooking an expanse of green grass, punctuated by shimmering white obstacle fences, blue water hazards and sprigs of brilliant flowers, the course is frightening in its challenges, but serene in its beauty. The paradox slams each and every viewer as they sit rivetted to the scene playing out just inches in front of their eyes. The 15th Annual Grand Prix Gala is one of the signature events of the Langley School District Foundation and one that is eagerly anticipated each year. Who has not had one of those dreaded times when we think our next idea or concept might NEVER come? Throw the added pressure of a deadline into that scenario and only the strong survive. That is who we shall see at the 2nd Annual IDEAX.
Sculpting the Future The Langley School District Foundation and its community partners are proud to support the second Annual IDEAX. This year, students are asked to design a future Langley that could exist in 50 years. They are crafting a city that is environmentally responsible and earth conscious while honouring what is important to today’s residents. Clearly, the task is far from simple, but students participating in the 2020 IDEAX are motivated by an inner drive to improve their quality of life and to foresee a future Langley that in 50 years may evolve to look more like a millenial dreamers’ dream.
The Parameters IDEAX can best be summed up as an opportunity for secondary students to develop a vision, and then through intensive research and advice-seeking from mentors, follow it through to its viable conclusion. Students will come to know that parameters are essential to avoid wasting time with an unfocused, far-flung exploration. Supported by a creative brief that lays out the strategic goals, demographic information, key attributes and specific visual and logistical criteria, students present their monthslong investigative project to a panel of expert judges, who will reject even the savviest of projects if they are not explained properly. www.ideasummit.ca Those that make it through the rigorous process of initial vetting, the secondary selection process, final presentations and adjudications of first, second and third awards will receive cash scholarships from the Langley School District Foundation in amounts of up to $15,000. The Langley School District, often described as one of the most progressive and innovative in the province, has once again hit it out of the park with IDEAX. Tedx Youth event The Langley School District Foundation is proud to support the Third Annual TEDxYouth@Langley Event. Spearheaded by six students from Brookswood and Walnut Grove Secondary, who planned, organized, assembled and promoted TEDxYouth@Langley – 2020, the day features a line-up of seven speakers who will tackle a theme of education and educating – the pitfalls, problems and prognoses. According to the organizers, “A great number of students feel dissatisfied with their experiences at school. Some skip classes and feel unmotivated and disconnected. Others face problems that are seldom discussed or dealt with. TEDx, by offering a platform and a voice, hopes to create a safe space to discuss ideas on how to improve the school experience and at the same time share the stories of students.”
navindi de silva is a Walnut Grove student who dedicates her time to empowering the next generation of future leaders. She is an active participant in many school-based clubs and programs and has a passion for helping youth successfully pursue their goals. grace Kim actively participates in services within her school and community to support others. Throughout her school years, Grace developed an interest in environmental conservation and preservation of justice in society, including educational rights. Her TEDx talk focusses on Choice in Education. leeya Jeong is a young poet whose goal is to alter and improve an educational system that did more to hinder than help her. Describing the existing platform as a game of Simon Says, Leeya is advocating for a sea change that will one day educate all, according to their specific learning abilities. ashley haines is an enthusiastic, passionate and outgoing community leader based in Vancouver, BC. She grew up in Langley and is a 2017 Brookswood Secondary Graduate who had and continues to have many in-depth volunteering and leadership experiences through various community initiatives and causes. Ashley currently attends UBC studying international studies and sociology. rachel Yeom is on fire with a desire to create change. The RE Mountain student, after a series of setbacks, started her own non-profit with a mandate to support literacy throughout the world. Her monumental ambition combined with an iron steel will keeps Rachel resolute in her determination to help others. allissa guo is an avid public speaker. She has participated in several speech competitions, including Skills Canada public speaking contest, Poetry in Voice competition and Canada
International Youth speaking contest to name but a few. You can be certain that her upcoming TEDx talk will be riveting. dr. hagar goldberg is a neuroscientist, educational consultant and founder of SEEN (Social & Emotional EducationalNeuroscience). With a great passion for education, Dr. Goldberg believes that a child needs to be SEEN in order to SHINE. The TEDxYouth@Langley Event takes place between 9:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Friday, april 3rd at Brookswood Secondary School Theatre and includes presentations by seven speakers with artistic interludes, featuring an endurance-defying martial arts demonstration, the Limerick Lasses, a dynamic dancing duo and Sharky Guppy, a student-led jazz band. SEE AND BE SCENE West Fine Art Show – For one weekend only, a group of renowned Western Canadian artists displayed their works at Peter Ewart Middle School in Langley. The gallery featuring the paintings of Brian Croft, Brian Coombes, Ken Nash, Joyce Trygg and dozens of others, representing the elite of the Western Canadian art scene, were all there. Attendees milled and mingled against a backdrop of an eclectic array of art. There were paintings that gave the illusion of moments from the past, as if they were frozen in time. Some immersed viewers into a paradox of energy and tranquility, while others limned nature at its primordial best. The collection included stark, punchy paintings interspersed with gentle, soft renditions. Some were forged to offer an uncanny allure; others to elicit a critical edge. Not only that! Attendees had the opportunity to view the art and life story of Peter Ewart and delve into the repertoire of a Canadian artist as he worked through his prodigious talent. Adding to the show was a

collection of quintessential pieces as submitted by Langley School District Art students. Selected and chosen as the best of the best, the array was nothing less than dynamic. Featuring imaginative pen and ink drawings, mesmerizing water colours, provocative mixed media renditions and dramatic photography, submissions came from Brookwood, Aldergrove, Walnut Grove, Langley Fundamental Middle Secondary Langley Fine Arts, and DW Poppy. Student art was adjudicated according to medium, originality, composition, intention and overall appeal. Cash awards provided by West Fine Art Show and Langley School District Foundation were presented to Paige Neufeld from Walnut Grove Secondary, Chloe Eum from DW Poppy Secondary and Tina Lin from Langley Fundamental Middle Secondary. Thanks to West Fine Art Show artists who donated 25% of all art sales, combined with a $1500 contribution, the Langley School District Foundation is able to support dozens of programs for Langley students.

The School District Welcomes the Wellness Team When Tamira Burton and Carole Chang, a nurse and nutritionist from Fraser Health come calling you know it will be a good day. In a world that is sometimes scarred by the ravages of social media or the vagaries of a fast-food culture, Tamira and Carole offer in their gentle and wise ways, some ideas, solutions AND initiatives that more often than not resonate with Langley students and teachers. Offering an amazing line-up of activities, speakers and displays they have hosted Wellness Weeks at Betty Gilbert Middle School last year and are planning a new week-long event at HD Stafford Middle School from May 11-14, 2020. Students and teachers from throughout the District are invited to be there to learn about Sexting, a Stigma Free Society, Children on the Street, Violence Prevention, Just Breathe Yoga, as well as Kid’s Play, Jessie’s Legacy (positive body image) and much more. Kids Helping Kids Clothing Drive The Township of Langley Firefighters and City Professional Firefighters in partnership with the Langley School District Foundation is holding their Annual Kids Helping Kids Clothing Drive from April 1 to April 17. All Langley Schools are asked to collect used clothing, have it marked with your school number as assigned by the Foundation and have the clothes ready for pick-up by the firefighters on Friday, April 17. All proceeds go to support the Langley School District Foundation Snack Programs as sponsored by the firefighters. Contact scairns@sd35.bc.ca to register your school in the program. The school that collects the most on a pounds-per-student basis will be treated to a BBQ lunch served by the firefighters.
