Literacy volunteers wanted
The Campbell River Literacy Association is looking for new volunteers willing to help adult learners. Volunteer tutors are in high demand with the CRLA. They help individual learners who need support increasing literacy skills, graduation requirements and post-secondary prerequisites in supportive one-on-one environments. “You do not require a back-
ground in education to be a literacy volunteer. All that is required, is a genuine desire to help another person improve their life,” said adult literacy program coordinator Julina Duarte. “This really is a great opportunity for any folks interested in volunteering and all training is provided.” Programs are held in the Robron Centre at 740 Robron Road and are free of charge. Flexibility
is offered for people who travel throughout the year. Tutor training sessions will be held on March 9 and 12 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., and one on March 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. They are a great chance to learn about tutoring and how to help. A Look Back
THE HISTORY OF THE CAMPBELL RIVER AREA

The local indigenous names, used long before newcomers came to the area, have been retained in some locations and reclaimed in others. These names are descriptive, either of the site and its characteristics, or of a historical event that occurred there. Names assigned by the early explorers were given to honor English or Spanish naval officers and dignitaries, many of whom never set foot in the places named for them. The surveyors who came later regularly named sites along the same lines as the explorers before them. Some names were given by the settlers who came to stay. In truth, some sites have changed their official name so many times, it is easy to become confused. There is one beauty spot, nestled in the heart of Strathcona Park, with an unusual naming history. It, like many other locations, was named at different times by different people; however, instead of different names, Myra Falls has the distinction of being named after two separate Myras. At any rate, Myra Creek, and Myra Mountain appeared on the maps after the 1910 survey. Official records indicate they were named for Myra Ellison, but in all probability, Mike King’s earlier request was also being fulfilled. However, the original Myra, Mrs. Thompson, had the satisfaction of having had these areas named for her for the 18 years prior to their appearance on the map.” So, the next time you’re out hiking or canoeing to Myra Falls, take a moment to remember both Myras for whom the falls were named.
