This guide functions as a useful resource for locals and as an introduction to the community for newcomers. It provides a glimpse into our organization and highlights the wide variety of businesses that are our members.
The reasons for living and doing business on the Saanich Peninsula are countless. The setting is visually stunning. The climate accommodates year-round recreational opportunities such as boating, kayaking, hiking and cycling. We have easy access to reliable transportation for goods and people. The setting and lifestyle opportunities are the roots from which our community is growing. We are home to restaurants, farms, arts & culture, technology & manufacturing firms, service industries and tourist attractions. The Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce has been building community in partnership with our members since 1912. The businesses support the growth and maintenance of infrastructure projects as well as providing necessary funding for local sports teams and arts and culture initiatives. These businesses contribute to “community” in many more ways than might be readily apparent. North Saanich is fortunate to be home to two of the largest transportation hubs on Vancouver Island: Victoria International Airport and BC Ferries Swartz Bay terminal. The Peninsula also has the distinction of hosting an economic powerhouse with a large concentration of commercial and light industrial organizations operating on and around airport lands.
We’re also a business friendly community. Along with our vibrant downtown we have our westside business park with advanced manufacturing, warehouse, high-tech, and aviation businesses, several of which do business globally. The Tsehum Harbour area has a commercial fishery, marinas, and is a hub for the marine service industry on Southern Vancouver Island.
Federal interests are well represented by the Institute of Ocean Sciences at Patricia Bay, the Centre for Plant Health and the new Department of National Defence – 443 Squadron facility at the airport. With a third of our land area in the provincial Agricultural Land Reserve or zoned agricultural outside the ALR it should be no surprise that North Saanich along with Central Saanich play an important regional role. North Saanich has taken a strong leadership role by showcasing the economic importance of local food security and food production. Organized by CRFAIR our annual Flavour Trail celebrations in late August highlight the varied and important contributions of local agricultural businesses.

An Introduction... to the Saanich Peninsula Welcome to the Saanich Peninsula, an area north of Victoria that encompasses Central Saanich, Sidney and North Saanich. Each municipality has its own distinctive character and personality, from the ocean breezes in Sidney to the rolling farmland of Central Saanich and the hiking and beaches in North Saanich. These are communities where businesses flourish, family history runs deep and proud and locals know each other by first name. Spend time in this region and you can’t help but notice the small-town warmth and friendliness, the focus on locally grown fruit and vegetables harvested from family farms and the sheer natural beauty of a peninsula 6

with a diversity of landscapes. A gateway to the island, the northern peninsula is home to the Victoria International Airport and the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal, so the majority of locals and visitors moving to and from the island enjoy the many recreational and business opportunities in our communities. We’re also known for our weather – the climate on the Peninsula is the driest anywhere on the island. The Peninsula has witnessed steep growth since 1912, both in the number of residents and the businesses they have developed. Back then, noting the increasing number of
industries, the Sidney Board of Trade worked with the local utilities company to forge a railway line through Sidney and equip the town with electrical power. New farming and advanced industrial operations flourished and today they continue to thrive alongside a thriving tourism industry. These, then, are some of the many faces of the Saanich Peninsula.
INDUSTRY
At the turn of the 20th century Sidney’s business enterprises revolved around a cannery, a sawmill, a rubber company and a fish processing plant. Today the city’s business and industrial heart pulses with cutting-edge technology focused on aviation, marine technology, advanced manufacturing and tourism. In aviation, Viking Air Ltd, the world’s leading utility aircraft company, supports de Havilland Canada aircraft and builds iconic Canadian amphibious aircraft to support firefighting worldwide from its North Saanich home. Vancouver Island Helicopters operates a diverse fleet of helicopters in North Saanich while Victoria Air Maintenance Ltd maintains and restores aircraft. Pacific Coastal Airlines connects passengers to cities and towns throughout the province and Pacific Sky Aviation and the Victoria Flying Club offer flight training and charters. The Peninsula’s long coastline has spurred the growth of marine science and technology.
The Institute of Ocean Sciences employs some 250 scientists and researchers, many engaged in earthquake monitoring at the Pacific Geoscience Centre. Ocean Networks Canada uses aquatic sensors to collect scientific data, while the Canadian Scientific Submersible Facility operates machinery to place sensors on the seabed. As the region’s tourism continues to grow, the recreational boating industry has become an increasingly prominent sector in the Peninsula’s economy, with many small companies are focused on meeting the needs of recreational boaters and ocean-based tourism operators. In advanced manufacturing, Quester Tangent manufactures electronics for the rail and locomotive industries, delivering train management systems, braking control and power products throughout North America and central Asia. Logging, a long-time staple of island business, is supported by Nicholson Manufacturing, which builds ring debarkers for forest products industries worldwide from Sidney. And Redlen Technologies provides X-ray imaging modules using Cadmium Zinc Telluride imaging sensors, providing solutions to a broad range of companies including medical imaging and security. These are just a small number of the prominent companies that have made the Saanich Peninsula their home base, fostering job development and attracting the province’s top talent to the island. FARMING & TOURISM
If there is one attraction for which the Peninsula is famous worldwide, it’s The Butchart Gardens. Its manicured flower beds, scenic vistas and restaurants attract over 1 million visitors each year. An anchor for regional tourism, the Gardens provide impetus for other emerging and established tourism operators. Families with small kids will love the Butterfly Gardens in Brentwood Bay, an indoor attraction where visitors can get close to an assortment of beautiful butterflies, tropical birds and interesting bugs in the new Insectarium, added in 2018. At the Country Bee Honey Farm shoppers can try honey infused with lavender, hot pepper, whiskey and buckwheat, while Snowdon House offers an inspiring selection of fruit-infused vinegars, Douglas Fir culinary products, dips, mixes and more. Many local farmers and wineries open their

doors to the public one weekend each August during the North Saanich Flavour Trail, when they discuss their work and sell locally grown meats, produce and artisanal items. Indeed, North and Central Saanich are home to family farms that have passed through several generations and continue to thrive, producing dairy, eggs, berries, grapes, a large variety of vegetables, and seedlings and flowers. On Thursday nights June through September the Sidney Summer Market is a gathering point for locals, farmers, artists, performers and visitors, who converge on Beacon avenue to explore the work of some 150 vendors. By day Sidney Whale Watching departs regularly on excursions around island waters to see the Orca whales, seals, sea lions and bird life that frequent the coastline. The cold water of the Pacific attracts intrepid scuba divers and kayakers, while the long stretches of sand in North Saanich are a great place for beach combing and bird watching.

Tour of

The annual tour of local industry gave local decision makers an opportunity to learn more about the successes and challenges of local businesses on the Saanich Peninsula, while entrepreneurs had a chance to bring their concerns forward. The Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s Tour of Industry saw some 60 people representing various organizations including local municipalities, businesses and organizations, visit five local businesses. Divided into two teams, the tour participants visited Professional Components, Pronautic, Sure Grip Controls, Specific Mechanical Systems and Macaloney’s Caledonian Distillery and Twa Dogs Brewing over the course of the day. Professional Components supplies – among other products – suspension systems; Pronautic manufactures wooden interiors for marine and home interiors; Sure Grip Controls builds joysticks, handles and electrical components in mobile hydraulics and industrial applications; Specific Mechanical 10
builds brewing and distilling systems for craft beer and spirit industries; and Macaloney’s Caledonian Distillery and Twa Dogs Brewing brews single malt whiskies and beer. Information provided before and during the tour itself reveals that the majority of companies visited have deep international ties. For example, 75 per cent of Professional Components’ customers either reside in the United States or other countries. Sure Grip’s share of customers beyond Canada is 70 per cent, while Specific Mechanical Systems’ share is 65 per cent. To further underscore this point, consider the marine suspension system that Professional Components sells under its Shockwave Seats division. Its customers include governments around the world, that source seats for various types of marine vessels, including vessels used by highly trained military specialists, from the company’s Sidney location. Specific Mechanical Systems, meanwhile, is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of brewing

equipment for the growing craft brewing industry. This international orientation places a premium on connectivity to foreign markets and the tour heard concerns about the costs and logistics of shipping off Vancouver Island. The supplied background information also echoed familiar concerns about high real estate costs and local transit issues. Tour members, however, also heard about the advantages of the region, including the region’s strong manufacturing base, availability of space, and access to an international airport. Above all, participating businesses pointed towards the region’s quality of life as one of the central reasons for doing business on the Saanich Peninsula. Denny Warner, chief executive director of the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, said the tour raises awareness of the many local businesses that provide quality jobs, while giving entrepreneurs and local decision makers to learn more about each Victoria Distillers other, thereby benefiting both.
