Happy together for 55 years Cecily and Terry MacKenzie have been happily married for more than 55 years. The couple met at a party and, while they didn’t know it at the time, it would eventually lead to a long life together. They dated for three years, before Cecily turned 21 and was legally permitted to marry her 25-year-old husband. The couple have raised three children and have six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. For more, see page A18 KEVIN MILLS PHOTO

‘Some days you like them better than others’ Mission’s Cecily and Terry MacKenzie have been married for more than 55 years When you first meet Cecily and Terry MacKenzie, it’s easy to see how comfortable they are with each other. And they should
be. The Mission couple have been married for more than 55 years. They have experienced a lot together over the decades, and the secret to their long relationship is an easy one. “You have to remember that not every
day is a good day and that you love them every day, but some days you like them better than others,” Cecily said. Terry, 80, was born in Mission in 1939 and drove a truck for more than 50 years.
Cecily, 76, on the other hand, was born in Saskatchewan and moved to Dewdney in 1955. Her family came to B.C. because her father suffered from asthma and doctors thought the wetter climate would help him.

Cecily and Terry first met thanks to Terry’s cousin. “My cousin had a party, a teenage party, and that’s how I met her,” Terry said. Cecily was there with someone else, but it was obvious to Terry that she didn’t want to be there. “So I took her away,” he said. “He rescued me,” added Cecily. Despite his noble effort, the two did not begin dating right away. “I lived on a farm and my father was ill in the hospital at the time. I was staying at home to help my mother on the farm. And I couldn’t go out because there was too much work to do.” But the two ran into each other again. “He invited me to go for a Sunday drive. Those were the days when I had to have it approved by my father.” Cecily’s dad thought Terry was a little old for his daughter (she was 18 and Terry was 22), but permitted them to go on the drive as long as they were back by 4 p.m. While a drive sounds like a nice first date, Terry had another motive. “I had to go pay my grub bill at the cafe,”
Cecily MacKenzie enjoys playing crib at the Mission Seniors’ Activity Centre. Her husband Terry enjoys meeting and talking to other seniors at the centre. The two have been married for more than 55 years. KEVIN MILLS PHOTO he said with a laugh, so he took Cecily with him on the errand. The couple continued to date but had to wait three years before they got married, because Cecily had to be 21. Her father insisted that she be of legal age. Once married, they began a life together. They rented a house in Abbotsford for a whopping $35 a month. The couple raised

three children – a daughter, now 54, and two sons, ages 53 and 47. They also have six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. “Children are wonderful because we were young when we had our children so we were able to grow with them, do things with them and have loads of fun with them. “ Re s p o n s i b i l i ty-wise, grandchildren are great because you
can love them and send them home,” Cecily said. “Spoil them and send them home,” Terry said. However, Cecily said you never stop worrying about them. “And when they get a spouse, that spouse becomes part of your family because it’s not blood that makes a family, it’s love,” she said. The couple have been retired for years and enjoy taking their trailer up to Hope to spend the summer. They also frequently visit the Mission Seniors Activity Centre. Cecily enjoys playing cards, especially cribbage. “We also both enjoy people. Terry’s not a card player but he enjoys the chit-chat and the folks that come here.” With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Terry says they still celebrate the occasion, but he’s not sure if he’ll buy her a gift. “It depends how good she is,” he said. “When you get to our age, material things aren’t that important. We don’t buy presents for each other anymore. We spend time together. We’ll go out for dinner.” 8617984

· Engage in specific balance exercises. Balance exercises can improve stability. Balancing on one foot while standing for a period of time is one such exercise. Stand up from a seated position without using your hands, then shift your weight from the left to the right while standing on the respective leg on that side. A physical therapist can work with you to ensure you are using correct form in balance exercises. · Try tai chi. Look for tai chi classes at a gym or senior center. Tai chi is a form of movement training that can help strengthen the body, improve balance and improve flexibility. · Be aware of posture. Try to maintain weight over the ankles. Do not lean too far forward or backward, which can cause you to topple over. Keep your feet in a wide stance while standing to improve stability. · Don’t make quick movements. Always stand up and sit down slowly. Jarring motions may affect equilibrium or blood pressure, leading to unsteadiness.

Falls are one of the biggest contributors to fatal and nonfatal injuries among seniors. Such accidents not only threaten safety, but they also can compromise a person’s independence. Falls can cause broken bones, impaired mobility and even death. Falls do not have to be an accepted side effect of aging. With some balance training and other techniques, older men and women can avoid falls and the injuries that result. By implementing fall prevention programs and following these guidelines, individuals can remain safe and upright. · Get a vision check-up. A decrease in visual ability and perception can increase risk of falls. Impaired vision can cause people to trip over items they can’t see, miss steps or bump into obstacles. Make sure your vision has been checked recently and you are using contact lenses or glasses as prescribed by an eye doctor. · Know your medication side effects. Ask your doctor about the medications you are taking and whether they can contribute to dizziness or decreased balance. Medicines that affect blood pressure can lead to light-headedness as well. Your doctor may be able to substitute a medication with an alternative if your existing prescription is affecting your balance.

Exercise plays a significant role in disease prevention. Physical activity helps to reduce individuals’ risk of chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, various types of cancer, and dementia. A recent study from Statistics Canada found that only about 17 percent of adults in Canada were meeting the minimum guidelines for weekly physical activity established by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology. Such figures illustrate the emphasis that many adults must place on getting more physical activity. But returning to physical activity after a long layoff or becoming physically active for the first time are not as simple as lacing up a pair of running shoes and hitting the road. That is why preparticipation health screening for adults about to engage in physical activity after a period of inactivity is strongly suggested. What is a preparticipation health screening? Apreparticipationhealthscreening is an examination conducted by a physician that looks for particular issues that may interfere with one’s ability to exercise. Doctors will likely ask patients about their medical histories and their family histories as well, as each of these factors can be used to determine whether a person is ready for physical activity or any restrictions need to be put in place to protect them.
What happens after a preparticipation health screening? Once a physician conducts a health screening, he or she will conclude if an individual can exercise and how much he or she can exercise. Adults who are cleared to exercise but have never been physically active or have gone years without exercising will likely be advised to take it slowly at first. Doctors may provide specific exercise recommendations or refer patients to a sports medicine professional who can help them devise an appropriate workout regimen. Doctors also may recommend followup appointments to track patients’ progress. Such appointments can be invaluable, as they can help people whose overall health has improved after limited exercise ramp up the intensity of their workouts, which can help them continue on the course to a healthier life. However, it’s important that people consult their physicians before increasing the intensity of their workouts. A second screening might even be worthwhile, helping people and their physicians alter workout regimens that reflect their improved overall health.

Congratulations on 70 years Married! Long time Mission residents Frank and Maryanne Federici celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on January 7th. They were married on a very snowy afternoon at the United Church in Mission. Their first home was in Dewdney, then they moved to Agassiz to farm. They moved to the Cariboo in 1962 where they lived with their 6 children for 9 years. They moved back to Mission where they still reside.
