Making quality tools accessible KMS Tools offers the best value in tools KMS Tools is thrilled to be serving professionals and hobbyists alike in their biggest, brightest location yet. The new store, with a 25,000 square foot showroom, is at #120 34530 McConnell Rd beside Costco, in Abbotsford, not far from the US/ Canada border. For nearly 40 years, KMS Tools has been serving Western Canada, offering the best value in tools, guaranteed. This local familyowned and operated business began with a heavy-duty mechanic, unsatisfied by the limited availability of quality tools at fair prices, and the lack of expertise and support for the tools he used. As he began sourcing good tools for his own work and hobbies as a woodworker and classic car enthusiast, he realized he wasn’t the only one who had much to gain. He began thinking about how the entire local tool industry could be better for other people who also had a passion for handson projects. And so, KMS Tools was born in his basement in 1981.
Now, nearly 40 years later, with 11 locations across BC and Alberta, KMS Tools is proud to be able to say they have a hand in building our cities. With many professionals counting on KMS Tools as their #1 source for quality tools, their tools have built or repaired much of what we see around us today - from our homes and our schools, to our vehicles and our roads. KMS Tools strives to make quality tools accessible and affordable to tool users in North America, but it doesn’t stop there. Their program, Tools for the World, has brought hundreds of pallets of good used tools to 45 different countries around the world, where access can be extremely difficult and expensive. Thanks to tool donors and partnerships, hundreds of lives have been positively affected by the new hope that old tools can bring. Better veggies for Canadian organic farmers Changing things for Canadian organic farmers - one carrot and pepper at a time A new Canada-wide project led by the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm, part of UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems, will help organic vegetable growers find plant varieties better suited to Canadian climates and environments. Postdoctoral Fellow Alexandra Lyon and Professor Hannah Wittman are leading a five-year research project called Canadian Organic Vegetable Improvement (CANOVI). CANOVI focuses on participatory plant breeding of peppers and carrots – two crops identified as top priorities for organic vegetable growers in a survey the CANOVI team conducted in 2018. “Most carrots are grown in a few intensive production regions like California, which means there’s not as much incentive for the private seed sector to breed varieties for Canadian climates,” says Lyon.
“Organic growers are a smaller proportion of the market in terms of who’s buying seed, but they still need varieties that are well-adapted to their systems. So there’s an opportunity to improve the productivity of organic farming through public plant breeding.”

Irrigation made easy with Hortau Know in real time what’s going on with your crops Irrigating is no fun. It’s definitely not why you like being a grower. But unfortunately, irrigation is more and more crucial to improve crop performance. In recent years, we have been more prone to experience climate variations and longer drought periods. Drip irrigation is by far the best irrigation method to efficiently provide water supply directly to the plant at anytime during the day. But to do it properly, it’s necessary to have sufficient access to water. Once this is possible, we need to distribute the water to the plant at the right time with the right amount. Did you know that most growers irrigate too much? Really! Too much... Is it your case? Maybe because starting the pump is giving us a false feeling of achievement. At least we are doing something, right? Well
hydric stress is not always when soil is too dry. Irrigating too much is also a stress to the plant. By irrigating too much, it just flushes your precious fertilizer and that’s not great. Even more, it slows down the plant development by lack of oxygen, poor roots development and may even lead to diseases. So what can be done? Nowadays information is key. How about knowing in real time, exactly what’s going on with your crop at your farm, instead of guessing how much water your crop needs every day or so? Now it’s possible to know exactly how much water your plant needs by measuring the hydric stress where it is sensed first: the root zone. Don’t wait until you can see the stress on your plants, because if you do, it will mean that the stress occurred a long time ago, and it will be more difficult to
reverse the sides effects if it’s still possible. There are many sensors that can be put into the soil to monitor water, there are even climate formulas that are helpful too. But where to start? How to differeniate these techniques and which one is the best for you? If you are interested in better irrigation and to see how it can easily be done, you are invited to come to the LMHIA Short Course presentation, performed by Caroline Letendre from the company Hortau. The title is “Achieving optimal crop yields and fruit quality through irrigation precision. Caroline has being working

in irrigation monitoring for the past 10 years and is currently working in fruits, vegetables and tree crops. She thinks the fun begins as soon as you install your

irrigation system, at least she likes to make it easier for her growers. See you at the Terralink Room, February 1st at 2:35-3:05 PM (or at booth 305).

Biobest was the first company to start with commercial rearing of bumblebees It is recommended to bring the 4-Pak in the field when the crops is starting to bloom (5% bloom opened). Contact a Biobest representative or distributor to discuss recommended rates (# hives needed per acre) according to your crop and situation.
OTHER FRUIT AND BERRY CROPS
Experience in other outdoor crops with Bombus huntii is still limited. Other bumblebee species have been demonstrated to be effective pollinators of a wide variety of fruit and berry crops, e.g. in strawberry, apple, raspberry, blackberry, pear, cherry, ..... It is expected that Bombus huntii will have similar potential. Contact your Biobest representative if you wish to participate in demonstration trials to build this experience together.
In fruit crop, pollination is a key success factor. Due to the scarcity of honeybees and other pollinators, growers are more aware than ever of the pollination challenge. Even when honeybees for pollination are available, deploying bumblebees can be the right decision to ensure optimal pollination success. The commercial introduction by Biobest of Bombus huntii is a breakthrough for growers of open-field fruit and berry crops in Western Canada. Bombus huntii is the first commercially available bumblebee species that is Native to Western Canada and USA and is authorized for outdoor pollination applications in British Columbia. Biobest was the first company to start with commercial rearing of bumblebees.

The first commercial bumblebee hives were produced in Belgium, back in 1987. These hives were based on the European bumblebee species Bombus terrestris.

For the North American market Biobest mainly produces Bombus impatiens. This species, native in the Eastern parts of North America, is not naturally present in the Western part. That’s why it can only be used in the West in greenhouse conditions. Now, finally, with Bombus huntii Biobest offers a pioneering solution for growers of outdoor fruit and berry crops in Western Canada in need of a pollination boost. A modern dairy barn may have a completely automated operation: • a robotic milking machine will take care of actually milking the cows while also providing animal health and milk quality data; • a robotic feeding machine will make ondemand meals for the animals and monitor their intake; • a robotic cleaning machine will roam the cow area, cleaning up the floors to ensure a healthy environment; a climate control system will keep the barn at the optimal temperature & humidity year-round; and at the heart of it all, a computer will monitor the systems of the barn and notify the farmer of any abnormalities with his equipment or his animals. All this automation allows a farm to run more efficiently than ever before, while
giving a farmer more information about his operation, allowing for more effective management. By automating the repetitive farm tasks, a farmer is allowed more time to care for his herd - and for his family. West Coast Robotics is dedicated to providing this future to any size farm, and the last few years have proven that they are prepared to grow alongside their customers. A highly trained technical team, a stable of quality products, and knowledgeable sales staff all contribute to the continued growth of the young company.

Maximize the performance of your tires Decrease your tires air pressure in the field and increase it for on-road travel... right from the comfort of your cab According to Matt Beischlag of Beischlag Farms, “operation and maintenance of our farm equipment is one of the largest expenses we have facing our operations. The ability to cut fuel costs in the field and on-road by 10%, while reducing soil compaction is a massive benefit”.

What are the key benefits of PTG’s Central Tire PTG’s central tire inflation systems uses rotary Inflation System? unions which can be installed on the rear bar axle between the tractor and wheel so Slippage there are no lines over the tires. For tractors Lower air pressures in the field can increase with flange axles and mechanical assist front the foot print of the tires contact by as much as 20%, providing substantially more traction tires we a have solution that goes over the and reduced wheel slippage which can reduce tires using a protective steel flex line that is removable during field operations without the fuel consumption by as much as 10%. loss of air pressure if desired. Rut Depth For implements, PTG has multiple solutions Higher air pressures in the field can increase including; replacing the spindle and hubs with the rut depth. Every 0.4” of rut depth adds to pre-drilled spindles so there are no lines over the increase in overall fuel consumption by as the tires, or go over the tires for use with nonmuch as 10%. pre-drilled spindles and hubs. Soil Protection PTG’s patented speed valves open and close automatically with no manual shut offs. The average soil contact area pressure is Deflation of up to 80% of the air pressures higher by a factor of 1.25 than the actual tire pressure. In other words, a tire pressure of 9 psi happens within 1 minute while inflation to road pressures can be performed within 3 to = a soil pressure of 11 psi, and a tire pressure 4 minutes. of 23 psi = a soil pressure of 29 psi. Therefore, since soil pressure reduces with decreasing PTG offers a large selection of compressors tire pressure, the tire pressure should be kept to do the job ranging from 35cfm, 70cfm and as low as possible for the purpose of soil 140cfm. protection.
