Camping in Golden Ears Provincial Park is not only close to home for many, but it is loaded with trails for hiking and horseback riding for residents and visitors alike. The water at Alouette Lake is as cold and clear as any, and the picnic area is perfect for day trips, birthday BBQs and family get-togethers. The municipal dykes here offer not only views of the majestic Golden Ears mountains, but wildlife, from eagles and hawks, herons and cranes, all set amongst acres and acres of farmland and following the path of the Alouette River. There are attractions like the WildPlay treetop course and the Circle Farm Tour. The ACT has no shortage of events to take in, and Maple Ridge offers a variety of recreational opportunities to choose from. The community hosts many special events throughout the year, such as the Ridge Meadows Home Show and the Caribbean Fest to name a few. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR On behalf of my colleagues on Council and all my neighbours here in Maple Ridge, I would like to welcome you to our community. This place is special. It has been the home of the Katzie First Nation and Kwantlen First Nation for over 10,000 years. The Municipal District of Maple Ridge was incorporated in 1874 and 140 years later Maple Ridge became a City. There is a deep history that is celebrated at our local museum and throughout the community with sidewalk art and self-guided walks. The natural beauty encompassed between the Fraser River on our southern border and the Golden Ears Mountains to the north is second to none in BC. There are close to 200 kilometres of walking trails on our dykes and up into the forest in and around Alouette Lake in Golden Ears Provincial Park. Maple Ridge has some incredible places for food lovers; from the Saturday Haney Farmers Market at Memorial Peace Park to the restaurants and craft brewers located throughout the community, you can find memorable places to unwind and decompress after a day out in nature. One of Maple Ridge’s ‘superpowers’ is the incredible volunteer community in our sports and culture organizations. We have produced world class athletes in many disciplines, and we will showcase that amazing talent as the hosts of the 2020 BC Summer Games. The ACT Arts Centre is the hub of Maple Ridge’s arts scene, and its location at the east end of our iconic downtown park make it the focal point of many community festivals and celebrations throughout the year. You can go from the middle of a trail deep in the forest to a waterfront dinner and drinks in under an hour. You can watch the sunset change colours on the Golden Ears Mountains from the dyke trails while walking your dog or visit with locals who will point you to their favourite places to shop. 224 Street This quaint shopping district, nestled on 224 Street between Lougheed Highway and Dewdney Trunk Road, offers several boutique shops and services. Some of the unique gifts and items you will find here include: a tea and whimsical gift shop, a candle shop, a kids’ boutique store, a jewelry store, art stores, home décor and the list goes on. Along 224 Street is where you will find The ACT Arts Centre and the Leisure Centre and Pool. Dewdney Shopping Corridor Along the Dewdney Shopping Corridor you will find pockets of unique shops and services, impressive bakeries, spas and salons, breweries, gastro pubs and much more. Each of the main shopping centres is accessible from Dewdney Trunk Road which spans the entire length of Maple Ridge from east to west. Run by two sisters who have strong roots and ties to the community, Golden Ears Cheesecrafters is the Fraser Valley’s newest artisan cheese processing facility. It features a variety of cheeses, fresh cheddar curds and cultured butter, which are hand-crafted using premium milk taken straight from their family dairy, located next door. A growing trend in Maple Ridge is outdoor patios on which to enjoy food and drink while taking in some fresh air. The Chameleon Cafe (www.chameleonmapleridge.com) on 224th Street in Maple Ridge added one with lights just last year. Other restaurants, such as the Big Smoke Ale House (big-smoke.ca) on Lougheed Highway, have followed suit. None may have a better view than the Billy Miner Alehouse (springsgroup.ca/billyminer), on River Road and overlooking the Fraser River. Kingfishers Waterfront Bar and Grill (kingfisherspub.com) on River Road also has an outdoor patio, overlooking the Fraser River. The Ranch Pub and Grill (mrec.ca/?page_id=24), at the Maple Ridge Equi-Sports Centre on 132nd Avenue, has an outdoor patio, as well, as do Humble Roots Cafe and Deli (humbleroots.ca) on 224th Street and Witchcraft Beer Market and Bistro (springsgroup.ca/ witchcraftpub) on Dewdney Trunk Road.
Silver Valley Brewing opened in Maple Ridge and is the latest craft brewery to open in Maple Ridge. It features a wide range of beer styles with a special focus given to English style ales. Ridge Brewing is another. Located off 228th Street, the microbrewery producer produces different styles of beers in growlers, by the glass or four ounce tasters. Maple Meadows Brewing at 22775 Dewdney Trunk Road celebrated its fourth anniversary in April with a tasting room that serves 10 different beers on tap.

Food Trucks
Food has gone from being a side dish at community events to the main course, and Maple Ridge has an event for foodies on Father’s Day, June 16. The Greater Vancouver Food Truck Festival will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Memorial Peace Park, 22407 Dewdney Trunk Rd., and will be a free event featuring more than 20 food trucks, selling everything from Malaysian food to cannolis, with artisan vendors, live entertainment and more. Plans to create a more vibrant downtown in Maple Ridge also include food trucks at happenings in the core, and events like the Home Show from May 3-5. Visitor Guide | MAPLE RIDGE 2019

Golden Ears Provincial Park Golden Ears Provincial Park is one of the largest in the province, renowned for the recreation opportunities provided by Alouette Lake, an impressive network of trails, and 409 campsites with easy lake access. People are drawn to the beauty of the lake, bordered by the impressive Golden Ears mountains – the twin peaks of Mt. Blanshard. It’s one of the most popular provincial parks in the province.
At 625 square kilometres in size, there’s room for everybody. Alouette Lake day-use area provides beaches and picnic tables. If you want to spend some time in the great outdoors, visit Golden Ears Provincial Park with a total of 409 vehicle accessible camping spots. Of those, 350 are reservable. Gold Creek is open year-round, with reservations from May 10 to Sept. 1, while Alouette is open from May 15-20, and June 12 to Sept. 2, and same for North Beach. Alouette and Gold Creek have toilets, showers, water taps and a playground. North Beach, which is a little more affordable, has pit toilets and one-hand pumps for water. And for people who want to rough it, away from the drive-in camping crowd, there are backcountry or wilderness campsites in Alder Flats on the West Canyon Trail, and at Panorama Ridge on the Golden Ears Trail. No facilities are provided, and all garbage must be packed out. The former site is a five-kilometer hike from parking, the is second nine clicks in. For boaters, there are marine campsites on Alouette Lake at Moyer Creek, the Narrows and at Alouette River. Cell phone service is poor or not available in many areas of the park, including the campgrounds and Alouette (South Beach) day-use area.

If Maple Ridge is known for one thing, that would be its lakes and rivers. The Fraser River is the longest river in British Columbia, stretching 1,375 kilometres, from the western side of the Rocky Mountains at Mount Robson Provincial Park, and ends in the Strait of Georgia at Vancouver. Named for explorer Simon Fraser, the river was a transportation route and source of food for the Indigenous people of the region. Alouette Lake, in Golden Ears Provincial Park, is another popular destination, for camping, boating, fishing, hiking, and horseback riding.
The Alouette River is formed at the confluence of the North and South Alouette Rivers. The smaller of the two, the North Alouette, flows from Jacobs Lake south to its confluence with the South Alouette. The river flows over a minor set of falls about halfway from its mouth. The South Alouette originates on the slopes of Mount Robie Reid and flows into Alouette Lake. After exiting the lake, the river flows west before converging with the North Alouette. The Alouette produces steelhead, cutthroat, dolly varden, chum salmon, pink salmon, and coho. Not all are open to retain. Check your fishing regulations.
In the spring and summer, the chum fry are present in the river. The cutthroat trout like to feed on these and this can be the best time to fish for cutthroat trout. Kanaka Creek has a canyon that has small waterfalls, beautiful trees and crystal clear water. You can fish from where it empties into the Fraser River to the 112th Street Bridge. Fishing is not permitted above the bridge. Fishing in the spring and summer can be rewarding. The river is home to cutthroat trout. On 240th Street, at Kanaka Creek, a few blocks north of Lougheed Highway, there is a fish ladder.

Whonnock Lake Park in the eastern part of the City of Maple Ridge is another place for outdoor fun, such as canoeing, kyaking, paddleboarding and fishing. There are numerous opportunities for scenic riding in Maple Ridge. The largest source of trails for those on horseback is Golden Ears Provincial Park, where there are 20 km of gravel or dirt horse trails. Horses are allowed only on specific trails designated in the park map. Day-use stop-over is permitted at the South Beach corral area. The Golden Ears trails also connect to other trails that run within the City of Maple Ridge, including the trails around Allco Park on 248th Street. Thanks to the efforts of the Haney Horsemen Association, Maple Ridge has an extensive network of horse trails that wind around new subdivisions. Another popular area is the trails around Pitt Lake, with scenic half-day rides.
There are also a wide variety of trails on the dykes, along the South and North Alouette Rivers, including the Heron Tree Dike Trail, the Fenton Dike Trail and part of the Trans-Canada Equestrian Trail. Fishing
Maple Ridge is known for salmon fishing on local waterways, and sturgeon fishing on the ‘Mighty’ Fraser River. There are five types of salmon running at different times in the Fraser River, Pitt River and Harrison River. The best salmon fishing is typically between June and November. Fisheries and Oceans Canada has regulations and information for anglers at www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/salmon-saumon-eng.html Sturgeon fishing in the Fraser happens in the spring and fall, and these river kings can be up to 300 pounds and well over 100 years old. Davidson’s Pool
Whonnock Lake Provincial Park has a little lake that is well stocked with coastal cutthroat trout and rainbow trout, and trolling or casting from shore are both easy options. All motors, including electric, are prohibited on Whonnock Lake. Check fishing regulations at: www.pac.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fm-gp/rec/ fresh-douce/region2-eng.html Mike Lake, located in Golden Ears Provincial Park, is regarded as one of the top spots in B.C. to take kids fishing. Mike Lake has a fishing dock, as well as an easy walking trail that takes you around the lake, which the Fisheries Society of B.C. stocks with catchable-sized rainbow trout each spring and autumn.
Like finding a restaurant that all the locals love, taking a dip in Davidson’s Pool is finding a spot that is popular with residents, but visitors rarely find. It is located off Fern Crescent at about 236th Street in the Alouette River, beside a little park known as Cross’s Cabins Park. Davidson’s Pool has long been a popular place in Maple Ridge to hang out during the summer as people relax on the sun-warmed rocks. It is a favourite swimming hole, and people who like to tube down the river launch from there and float down to Maple Ridge Park.
Heritage Walk
Port Haney was named after Thomas Haney, a brick maker who owned much of the property that is now downtown. He subdivided his land as the CPR line was being built, and that laid the groundwork for a small commercial and residential area near the railway station and wharf. There is now an easy stroll through that old neighbourhood that passes the Maple Ridge Museum, brickyard office, Haney House, St. Andrew’s Heritage Church Hall and more.

There are separate divisions specializing in lumber, finishing, landscaping and paint. “We primarily deal with every aspect of wood construction,” said Haney Builders Supplies general manager Alex Yakovyshenko. “We take pride in providing solutions and being with our customers from start to finish. That relationship is what brings us back to work every day,” he continued. What most people don’t realize, though, is that there is a large retail front to the store as well. Here sales staff get to spend a half an hour to an hour with a customer, walking them through their home reno issue and putting together a kit that is unique to their situation. “We use our knowledge and expertise and put pieces together, plumbing, electrical or whatever it may be,” said Yakovyshenko. “We like the fact that the customer will leave and they will probably spend less than $20. They will leave with the knowledge how to fix (the problem) as opposed to being stuck with a problem they are unsure how to tackle,” he added. Yakovyshenko says customers can expect to be treated well, pay a fair price and be looked after the moment they set foot in Haney Builders Supplies. “We take pride in being part of the community even though our community is not small anymore. We still very much participate in various activities and aspects of it,” he said. A lot of the initiatives, Yakovyshenko said, comes through his staff members. “If people want to support a particular initiative and they want to be part of it, we help out,” he said. Haney Builders Supplies helps the Friends In Need Food Bank by collecting non-perishable food items at various events they host. They hold an annual golf tournament to raise money for different charities. Over the last 30 years it has raised more than $150,000. Last year they raised more than $15,000 for the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. The business also supports carpentry programs at local schools. Plus they sponsor Pink Shirt Day, Ducks Unlimited Canada, the Maple Ridge Pitt Meadows Christmas Hamper Society, The War Amps Child Amputee Program, Sunshine Foundation of Canada and the B.C. Lower Mainland RCMP Golf Tournament. They are also a main sponsor of Operation Red Nose in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. A unique feature of Haney Builders Supplies is that they host a ladies night every November. Yakovyshenko says that traditionally the industry has been male dominated but now in a lot of households the woman is the bread winner if not the only person in the household and there are more women working for him than there has been in the past. Between 100 and 150 women turned out for Ladies Night this past November that featured stations with vendors and demonstrations teaching participants how to solve problems around the house that they might not feel comfortable doing. ”A lot of our staff members have been working in trades or around trades so when we’re standing on the other side of the counter from our customer, a lot of things we talk about we’ve actually done,” he explained. And that’s what Yakovyshenko believes sets them apart from other home renovation stores. They are able to craft customized solutions for a unique situations talking from experience. But one thing Yakovyshenko wants people to know is that his skilled team is enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge to help customers with the smallest of projects to the big builders.

A relic from Maple Ridge’s past, the Haney Wharf was once important in shipping bricks and other goods from Haney. It is now a scenic landmark and the site of a summer concert series. The Music on the Wharf series started 20 years ago with what was intended as a one-off outdoor concert. It has since become a regular by-donation community entertainment event, with concerts twice in July and twice in August, featuring everything from jazz and blues to country and western. A water runnel, which is a concrete channel with a pair of weirs for changing water levels, runs in the middle of the play area. If you want air, you can find it at the Albion Mountain Bike Skills Park, located on the south side of Albion Park. The haven for two-wheeled fans on 102nd Avenue, just east of 244th Street, offers jumps, a track, a trials area and a trail for anyone who pedals two wheels and doesn’t mind getting dust or dirt on their tires. All skill levels and all types of cyclists can use the park from sunrise to sundown. Farther east in Maple Ridge, there is a mountain biking and hiking trail network on 256th Street with a total of 17 trails considered to be moderately difficult that typically takes an hour to complete. Golden Ears Provincial Park also offers some mountain bike trails. The ACT: Located in the centre of the city, the ACT Arts Centre is also the beating heart of Maple Ridge’s cultural community. The 486-seat playhouse brings in the Vancouver-based Arts Club for professional theatre, as well as local productions. See www.theactmapleridge.org Maple Ridge Museum: The Maple Ridge Museum and Archives is located in Jim Hadgkiss Park at 22520 – 116th Avenue on the site of the former Port Haney Brick and Tile Company. The brickyard ceased operation in the late 1970s and all the industrial buildings were demolished, leaving only the former manager’s house and the smaller brick company office. In 1980, when the Haney Bypass was being constructed, the manager’s house and the office at the old brickyard were moved back from the bypass. The museum moved in with the Dewdney Alouette Railway Society as partners in 1984. Website: mapleridgemuseum.org Haney House, located on 224th Street, is operated by the museum. Thomas Haney, with the help of Samuel Edge and Daniel Callaghan, built this home for his family in 1883. It was patterned after the Haney family home in Ontario. The Haney family and their descendants occupied the house until 1979, when the last occupants donated the home and property to the district of Maple Ridge as a museum of family life. Historic sites: Maple Ridge’s birthplace was down by the river. Haney used to be an alternative name to Maple Ridge. The word came from Port Haney, named after Thomas Haney who opened a brick yard just east of the Port Haney West Coast Express station. Businesses grew along River Road near the CP Railway then eventually moved up the hill to Lougheed Highway. The Billy Miner Alehouse and Cafe is a key part of the old neighbourhood. It used to be the Bank of Montreal, before the bank moved up its present location on Lougheed Highway. The pub is named after the legendary Billy Miner, who robbed a train in Silverdale in 1904 and who used to hang out in Port Haney. Other historic sites include the stand of maple trees at 20818 Golf Cresc. near the Maple Ridge Golf Course, which gave Maple Ridge its name, the former Japanese kindergarten, now the CEED Centre on 223rd Street and 117th Avenue, and the Maple Ridge Cemetery on Dewdney Trunk Road and 214th Street, which dates back to the 1880s. Memorial Peace Park Memorial Peace Park is located in the downtown core on 224th Street in Maple Ridge, just north of the Lougheed Highway. It borders the Leisure Centre, the ACT Arts Centre, city hall and the Haney Place Mall. The park is the site of the Haney Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings from April through October, and the site of the annual Remembrance Day ceremony and Santa Claus parade, which both draw thousands of visitors. Now known simply as the Horse Clock, it is built entirely of recycled materials and chimes on the hour. It also used to rear on the hour, but years of wear and tear outdoors have made it safer to keep the horse’s hooves grounded. The city’s official buskers will play at the Horse Clock. Malcolm Knapp UBC Research Forest The Malcolm Knapp UBC Research Forest is at the top of Silver Valley Road in Maple Ridge. UBC took it over in 1949 as a place for research and education. Knapp was a forester who taught courses in harvesting and silviculture. For visitors, it is a natural playground that benefits from the stewardship of the university. Groups l a t n e m n o r i v En The Alouette River Management Society and Rivers Heritage Centre are located in Allco Park at 24959 Alouette Road, Maple Ridge. ARMS is dedicated to protecting and improving the Alouette watershed and surrounding areas by creating a healthy environment connecting parks, trail systems, public centers and waterways. ARMS hosts community events throughout the year, such as the Father’s Day Fish Release, June 16, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Maple Ridge Park (23200 Fern Crescent). All ages are welcome and everyone will have the opportunity to release a six-month old Chinook salmon into the South Alouette River to begin its journey to the ocean. The aim of the Kanaka Education and Environmental Partnership Society (KEEPS) is to maintain the health of that watershed’s natural ecosystems through education, community involvement, scientific research, land preservations and partnerships based on stewardship principles. Galas Maple Ridge is home to more than a few wellattended galas that benefit the community. None is more successful than the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation gala, which over the past two years, has raised close to $475,000. That money goes towards purchasing life-saving medical equipment for Ridge Meadows Hospital. These self guided trips allow you to follow with participating farms on your own schedule. Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows combine their Circle Farm Tour into one excursion that spans both cities. The tour starts off in Pitt Meadows at Osprey Village on Barnston View Road where people can walk along the Fraser River. Next, there’s Honeyland Canada on Ford Road. Farther north on Old Dewdney Trunk Road, there’s Hopcott Premium Meats and Blue Heron Fruit Winery. Just east on the same road, there’s Amsterdam Greenhouses. Farther east on Old Dewdney Trunk Road at 202nd Street, there’s Leghorn Ranch that offers trail rides. During the fall, there’s Meadows Corn Maze on Reichenbach Road.
