Celebrating a Century MISSION’S EVA WIENS TURNS 100 TODAY

asweage Eva Wiens first came to Mission in 1947 with her husband John. While she didn’t know it at the time, Mission would become her home for the next 72 years. Today, Wiens and her family are all gathering to celebrate her 100th birthday. While she may be a century old, Wiens says she still likes to stay active, do what she wants and enjoy life. That includes the odd vacation or whatever else she feels like doing. For more, see page A24

100 years old and still going strong Mission senior Eva Wiens says she likes to do ‘whatever I can get away with’ Today (Nov. 29) is a very special day for long-time Mission resident Eva Wiens. It’s her 100th birthday. Born Eva Jean

Brunel, she grew up in Egremont, Alta., after her parents moved there from France towards the end of the First World War. Eva enjoyed sports as a child, playing softball, basketball

and cricket. After high school, she moved to Edmonton to go to college. When the Second World War began, she and two friends moved to Vancouver. Her first job was in a

cafe, where she met her husband to be, John Wiens. Eva then worked in a war plant building located at the opening to Stanley Park. She was what was known as a “Rosie the Riveter.”

FROM BOOK TO BACK PACK

K

en Selvaraja of Lanka Jewels has organized the publication of a brand new book to tell the story of the Star Fish Pack Program - the book describes the story of Stan the Sturgeon and his journey to find out about the Star Fish Pack. This initiative is a fund raising idea of Ken’s and a clear, simple way to explain the need to help children overcome hunger when not in school.

Ken is launching a fund raising campaign and is asking Mission to help. You can either purchase a book in the Lanka Jewels store or donate a non-perishable item. The Rotary Club of Mission Sunrise has entered into a partnership with Mission Community Services, Save On Foods and Unitex to provide the Starfish Pack Program in Mission. It is hard to believe that children can come to school on Monday without having eaten properly over the weekend and it can be overwhelming to address an issue as big as food insecurity and hungry children. So this Christmas purchase a book as a stocking stuffer and know that 100% of the funds raised will go the this incredible program.

In 1944 she and John married and, after a three-year stay in Coquitlam, they moved to Clay Street in Mission in 1947. Mission has been her home ever since. “Once you move here and you have your home here and you work here, your friends are here then, so you stay,” she said. “We had some nice friends and nice neighbours; that helps you to stay.” Eva and John raised three children in Mission. John leased land to log and they had a strawberry patch when they first moved here. They eventually bought Canon Contracting from Johnson

Cannon and bought City Ready Mix, which ran from the pit on Dewdney Trunk Road. Eva and John were together until John’s passing in July 2009. While she may be turning 100, Eva still has a zest for life and likes to remain active. Most people find that she is easygoing. “Not always that easygoing – ask the kids,” Eva says. Asked what she likes to do now, Eva gives a short answer: “Whatever I can get away with.” She said she likes to travel. “My daughter and I just came back from Palm Springs.” She was also in Las

often past 1 a.m. reading the paper. She is an avid reader. “I like to know what’s going on in the world as well as Mission.” Eva now lives in The Cedars on Horn Street. She credits her longevity to the fact that she has always been healthy, from the time she was a child. Her daughter, Donna Wiens, asked Eva what her life philosophy was. Without missing a beat, she replied, “Don’t believe everything you hear.” When questioned if she just made that up on the spot, she laughed and added, “And the rest of it, take with a grain of salt.”

Vegas in the spring. “I like gambling a little… when I’m winning, that is.” However, she also took in a show as she went with her daughter to see the Chippendales dancers. Eva does a little bit of everything and says, “Whatever I did, I always enjoyed.” While life may be a little slower now, Eva still keeps busy. “Do a little sleeping, a little reading, a little eating, a little playing cards, a little going out whenever you get a chance, go to the casino once in awhile. I hear it’s moving to this end of town; it will be nicer.” She’s also a night owl, staying up late,

Your ‘Warm Home’ Team!

Get Your Home Fall and Winter Ready Get your home fall and winter ready with 5 simple projects

or replace structural framing, and caulk inside and out, if necessary. 3.Insulate well - One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moistureresistant product offering high thermal performance.

If boots, a warm hat and a tuned-up snow blower are the only items on your winter preparation list, your home maintenance plan may need a makeover. These simple home maintenance projects can help lower your energy bills, prevent more costly repairs and/or increase the lifespan of your home. 1.Heating & Ventilation - Examine your fireplace and chimney system to ensure that no soot or creosote has collected. Any cracks or voids could potentially cause a fire. Before you turn the furnace or boiler on, replace the air filter and hire a professional to inspect the unit more thoroughly. These steps will improve the efficiency and life of your furnace and will ensure stable indoor air quality. 2.Seal Windows and Doors - If not properly sealed, windows and doors can be a major culprit for heat loss. To keep the warm air inside, inspect the weather-stripping around your home’s windows and doors for leaks, rot or decay. Repair

4.Backyard Care - Save your property from potential damage by trimming overgrown trees and shrubs to prevent ice-laden branches from thrashing against electrical wires and your home’s exterior. Drain/shut off any exterior faucets and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing. Ensure rain or snow drains away from the house to avoid foundation problems.

Ask about your winter specials!

INSTALL EXCELLENCE Heating • Cooling • Gas Fitting • Refrigeration Servicing Mission, Abbotsford and the entire Fraser Valley

5.Roof and Gutters - Inspect your roof for shingles that are warped, damaged or even missing to prevent a future leak. Use roofing cement and a caulking gun to seal joints where water could penetrate, such as around the chimney, skylights or vent pipes. Make sure that your gutters and downspouts are securely fastened. Downspouts should extend at least five feet away from the home to prevent flooding. When it comes to preventative maintenance, a little time and effort can save thousands in energy costs and repair bills over the lifetime of your home.

WHAT IS VITAMIN D? It is a fat-soluble vitamin responsible for absorption of other minerals like calcium, magnesium and phosphate, mainly through our small intestine. DO I NEED IT? It is important for everyone as too little vitamin D may be linked to various diseases such as causing low calcium levels. We all know calcium is needed to make and maintain healthy bones, muscles and teeth. WHERE CAN I GET VITAMIN D FROM? It is found naturally in very few foods such as salmon, mackerel, tuna and egg yolks. Some fortied foods such as cow and soy milk. The food sources are usually not enough to replenish our needs, especially in winters. It is also made in the skin when skin is exposed to sunlight. It is dependent on the surface area exposed, skin pigmentation, age, season and use of sunblock. During the months it can be made during careful exposure of the arms and legs to sunlight for 10-15 minutes per day. However the risk of sun exposure must be considered. WHaT aBouT SuPPLEMEnTS? During the Canadian autumn, winter and spring time there isn’t enough sunlight, so Osteoporosis Canada recommends supplementing with oral Vitamin D. WHAT IS BETTER, VITAMIN D2 OR D3? The two major forms of supplements are D2 or D3. The D3 is three times more effective than D2 at increasing active levels of the active form of this vitamin, hence the D3 is recommended. Most over the counter supplements contain D3 levels. WHaT DoSE SHouLD i TaKE? Taking 800-1000 IU every day is preferred in adults. You may take higher weekly or monthly doses, if that is more convenient. For example taking 7000 IU once a week or 30,000 IU once a month; it has been shown to be safe. Can i TaKE Too MuCH VITAMIN D? It is not common to get too much Vitamin D. Studies have shown even with higher doses to be safe and does not cause harm.

Only in some cases such as patients with eating disorders to be careful, so talking to your doctor or pharmacist might be helpful in such cases. DO I NEED TO GET TESTED FOR MY VITAMIN D LEVELS? Because of its safety, testing is not needed before and during supplementing with Vitamin D. There is good evidence that supplementing with Vitamin D3, 8001000 IU daily, combined with calcium, helps reduce the risk of fragility fractures, supports the immune system, and even shown to improve mood. asweage Adopting a pet later in life Companion animals bring great joy to their owners. It’s not uncommon for seniors to feel lonely or depressed when they retire, pets help seniors overcome loneliness and depression by providing affection, company and entertainment. Pets also provide much-needed mental stimulation, and many pet owners find their pets help them become more physically active as well. Seniors who adopt pets may also feel a sense of purpose when helping animals who may not have anywhere to live. This is particularly true of older companion animals, which many young families are understandably hesitant to adopt. Mature pets might be an ideal fit for seniors. When seniors are looking to adopt a pet, there are various reasons why older pets or particular animals might be the perfect fit for them. • Adult pets may already be house trained, saving seniors the trouble and effort of training them. • Seniors may find cats fit their lifestyles more than dogs, as cats are

less active and do not need to be walked or played with as much as dogs. Cats also are small and easily maneuverable, meaning even seniors who have arthritis or other physical limitations can easily care for cats. Many cats are also content to spend long periods of time sleeping on their owners’ laps. • Small dogs that can be active within the house might be a good idea as well, especially for seniors with mobility issues. They’re also easily transported to and from vet appointments. It’s important that seniors carefully weigh the benefits of adopting a pet against any limitations they may have. Having a backup plan for care is advantageous as well. Seniors should not adopt a pet if they anticipate frequent travel or medical care that requires they be away from home for long periods of time.

Marie Higginbottom, who has lived in Mission since 1954, celebrated her 99th birthday on Nov. 15. During the Second World War, she served as a sergeant with the C.W.A.C in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Holland and Germany, before being discharged in Vancouver in 1946. SUBMITTED PHOTOS

Long-time Mission volunteer turns 99 On Nov. 15, 2019, just four days after Remembrance Day, veteran Marie Higginbottom (formerly Sgt. Marie Teresa Martin) celebrated her 99th birthday with her friends and family of four generations. What is most remarkable about this woman is not her age; it is the life she has lived. Marie was born in 1920 in Chatham, New Brunswick and served as a sergeant with the C.W.A.C in Halifax, Nova

Scotia, Holland and Germany during the Second World War. She was discharged in Vancouver in 1946 and married Edward Pierre Higginbottom, who also served in the Second World War. Marie and Ed had two daughters – Dawn and Tara – and moved in 1954 to Mission, where they were very active in the community all their lives. Marie spent countless hours

of her time volunteering at events for families and their children and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mission mayor and council in 2004 for her service to the community and the nation. She is an inspiration to many. Her strength, determination and the commitment she has made to her country and the District of Mission has not gone unnoticed.
