n July 2021, Surrey will be host to the Special Olympics BC Summer Games – and Surrey School is thrilled to be able to contribute to such an exciting and inspirational event. More than 1,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities will be competing in 10 events: 10-pin bowling, soccer, athletics, basketball, bocce, golf, powerlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, softball and swimming. “Our schools are not only centres of learning, they are neighbourhood hubs and community centres – places where people gather – and where we welcome children, youth, adults and families every day,” said Surrey Board of Education chair Laurie Larsen at the city announcement earlier this month. “That’s why in July 2021, we will enthusiastically open our doors to athletes and coaches participating in the Special Olympics BC Summer Games.” About 120 classrooms in a few of Surrey School District’s secondary schools will be provided rent-free for athletes and coaches

They will, of course, also have access to school shower facilities, washrooms, change rooms and cafeteria areas during their stay, as well as perhaps using some district buses. “We hope our schools will feel like a temporary home-away-from-home for athletes and coaches as they both gear
up for, and recover from, competition – as well as enjoy the sites of our beautiful city,” said Larsen. In 2021, the SOBC Games Opening Ceremony will be held on July 8, followed by competition throughout July 9 and 10. A Closing Ceremony open only to Games competitors will be held on
July 10. Approximately 1,100 community volunteers will be needed to run this empowering event. Volunteer registration details and Games venues will be announced in the weeks to come. Surrey School District
