Welcome to the third edition of Duncan: The Ultimate Resource Guide. With the help of the Duncan Cowichan Chamber of Commerce, we’ve come up with a directory that highlights many of the important organizations and businesses in the Cowichan Valley. We know that local residents and visitors make good use of the magazine, finding the best places to shop or dine out, access government services or find the number for a church or school. Again this year, thousands of copies of Duncan: The Ultimate Resource Guide are being delivered to homes and businesses in the area so virtually everyone will have their copy of the Guide and will put it to good use for the next 12 months. The Guide really is a hybrid: designed to give local people something they can hang on to throughout the year. It’s helpful in locating businesses that provide various services and products as well providing a list of contact names for community organizations. Tourism is growing every year in Duncan and the surrounding area and our visitors will be able to pick up guides at the Visitor Information Centre, hotels, restaurants and other locations. Welcome to
SHAWNIGAN LAKE Shawnigan Lake is a small, mostly rural community nestled in a lovely valley on Vancouver Island, approximately 45 km north of Victoria. Over 8,500 residents live in the area year round and the population swells further with summer vacationers. The local commercial centre is a tiny village with a variety of businesses and a museum, to service residents and visitors. New development in the area has been steady over the past several decades and the population and the amenities continue to grow. Shawnigan is the second largest unincorporated area in B.C. The Cowichan Valley Regional District is its main governing body. The lake is approximately eight km long and is surrounded by forested hills. Summer cottages and year-round dwellings occupy most of the lakeshore. As well, a number of private islands dot the narrow lake. There are several beautiful waterfront day-use parks around the lake for public access including one island park, accessible only by boat. Shawnigan Lake has been a popular recreation destination for over a century. In the early days visitors arrived by train. Today,
most people arrive by car but floatplane traffic has increased as well. Even though much has changed, people continue to flock to Shawnigan with recreation in mind. Fishing is good as the lake is stocked regularly; the water is warm in the summer and water sports, from swimming to wakeboarding, are very popular. Kayaking and canoeing can be enjoyed year ‘round; birds and wildlife are plentiful. A hike to the top of Mt. Baldy, Shawnigan’s iconic mountain, will provide climbers with a spectacular 360 degree view and great cycling and mountain biking opportunities abound on the trails in the area. The large Shawnigan area offers a diverse backdrop of beauty for the enjoyment of all, whether one seeks a quiet moment with nature or a more active experience. Shawnigan is also home to the magnificent Kinsol Trestle which is located on the

at the Centre include a collection of 19 model ships built over months and years by the late Ewald Dwersteg, a collection of hand-carved model fishing vessels by local indigenous carver Harvey George, and the variety of hands on interactive exhibits located throughout. In addition to the exhibits and displays, the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre holds wooden boat building and introductory woodworking classes for adults and youth in its workshop, offers children’s maritime-themed programming throughout the year, operates a historic marine ways for the hauling and cleaning of boats, and maintains a small fleet of traditional craft. Allow at least one hour to tour the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre... maybe a little longer if you would like to build a children’s wooden boat to take home with you, try your hand at some knot tying, step into our new interactive Ships’ Bridge exhibit, chat with the informative staff and volunteers, or just relax at the end of the pier soaking up some sun and taking in one of the best viewpoints in the bay. Time your visit to coincide with Cowichan Bay’s largest annual community event, the 35th Annual Wooden Boat Festival. This family-oriented festival includes fun for all ages. In addition to the displays of classic wooden power, pulling and sailing vessels, there is the ‘Best of the www.OceanEcoVentures.com Bay’ Chowder competition, boat races, People’s Choice awards, plenty of children’s activities and much more.
The Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre was founded as a traditional wooden boat building centre in the 1980s. Since that time, it has become a busy maritime centre and museum. Over 20,000 visitors tour the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre annually from all over the world. The Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre is comprised of a large timber frame building, a fully equipped wood working shop, and an 89 metre pier with four structures along it, each housing exhibits of various aspects of life on the West Coast and Cowichan Bay. Some of the exhibits showcase the First Nations rich history in Cowichan Bay. Come and see the historic dugouts and archival photographs displayed throughout. In addition, there are many displays featuring wooden boats from all eras and traditions. Freddie and Turtle are two that you will want to be sure to check out. Other favourite exhibits

After visiting the Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre, don’t miss stopping in at the Estuary Nature Centre in Hecate Park, just a short walk past the stilt homes. Whale watching tours leave right from the bay and kayak rentals are also available. You may as well stay for the entire day. Choose from one of the many eateries and spend time perusing the shops. The Cowichan Bay Maritime Centre is open 7 days a week from May through September and 5 days a week the rest of the year. Admission is by donation.

COBBLE HILL Vineyards, country fairs, rolling hills and ocean views make Cobble Hill one of Vancouver Island’s most scenic locations. Add in a spectacular golf course and quaint shops, and Cobble Hill becomes a must-visit location for tourists from afar or just down the highway. And every summer Cobble Hill comes alive as it steps back in time. The annual Cobble Hill Fair draws hundreds of people to celebrate the rich agricultural history of the region. The Fair itself is more than a century old and has thrived over the years due to the hard work of countless volunteers. The days begins with the Rotary pancake breakfast, a parade and then the take in the opening ceremonies and the decorated bicycle competition. Throughout the day there’s stage entertainment, rides and activities for the children, antique farm equipment displays and demonstrations,
livestock displays and judging, 4-H exhibits, commercial vendors, a horse show, domestic science and other competitions and many food options. (Watch for more information about the Cobble Hill Fair in the Cowichan Valley Citizen in the summer of 2020). Cobble Hill is a small community, approximately 45 kilometres north of Victoria in the Cowichan Valley Regional District, and is known for its agricultural surroundings, and for Cobble Hill Mountain itself, which gave the village its name. Just a short hop down the Trans Canada from Duncan, Mill Bay is a beautiful community nestled on the water, featuring exceptional shopping, boating opportunities and the worldrenowned Brentwood College. Drop by the marina and check out the kayaking and boating and how you can get on the water for a day of fishing or sight-seeing. A visit to Bamberton Provincial Park offers swimming, picnicking, birdwatching, boating and views across the water. For years the warm waters surrounding Vancouver Island’s Mill Bay have been a popular destination for local salmon fishers. The inviting water and the 225 m (74 ft) long sandy beach have also made Bamberton Provincial Park an ideal spot for families. Swimming, picnicking, bird-watching, boating and enjoying the stunning views across the water draw thousands of visitors here each year. The biking and hiking trails are endless in the Mill Bay countryside. Mill Bay was established in the 1860s, 20 years after Victoria was founded. Many of the settlers in Mill Bay arrived in 1862 when the HMS Hecate came to the Cowichan Bay area from England.

Lake Cowichan has all of the amenities that a small town could possibly provide. There are gas stations, grocery stores, a marina and more. Internet access for tourists is provided by CLIAS (Cowichan Lake Information Access Society) in the Bell Tower School located in Saywell Park. For history buffs, the Kaatza Station Museum in Saywell Park offers a look back into the history of the region. The town’s parks offer plenty of opportunities for picnicking, walking and swimming. Central Park and Saywell Park both offer picnic facilities and are located on the Cowichan River. To take a dip in the Cowichan River, head over to Kinsmen Park (Duck Pond). Other activities include tubing, kayaking, horseback riding, houseboat rentals and fishing. The beautiful Town of Lake Cowichan, a vibrant and friendly community, is just a half hour drive from Duncan. Situated at the foot of pristine Cowichan Lake, the heritage Cowichan River exits and flows its course through the heart of town. Lake Cowichan offers outstanding recreation and cultural opportunities as well as unique shops, artisans and restaurants. Cowichan Lake is the second largest lake on Vancouver Island and home to the Lake Cowichan First Nations. The

lake’s south arm boasts the highest average summertime temperatures in Canada. Enjoy swimming, boating, kayaking, tubing, or a leisurely houseboat cruise. Legend has it that Cowichan Lake is also home to the “Stin Qua”– a giant snake-like creature that roams in the depths of the lake, and the “Mesachie Man”– a half-man, half-gorilla that lives in the caves of Mesachie Lake Mountain. By the secluded waterfront of Honeymoon Bay, you can play a round of golf at March Meadows or sip coffee with locals and peruse the murals at Honeymoon Bay Heritage Hall. From Highway 1, turn onto Highway 18 north of Duncan. After a 20 minute drive you will arrive at Cowichan Lake. If you are in Duncan, locate Canada Avenue and drive along it away from town. When you reach the end of Canada Avenue turn left onto Sherman Road and turn left onto highway 18 when you reach it. Along this route, you will reach Cowichan Lake in about 25 minutes.
