he Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock is a two-week bike journey in which a team of first responders visit 27 communities across Vancouver Island to raise money for kids affected by cancer. Over the past 21 years, Tour de Rock has raised more than $25 million for the Canadian Cancer Society. The story goes back to 1994, when a group of Edmonton police officers shaved their heads in support of a boy who had lost his hair due to chemotherapy. By 1997, the Cops for Cancer head shaves had reached Victoria. The local police wanted to try something bigger and Tour de Rock was born. A new team of riders is picked every year. Over seven months, they train three times a week as well as fundraising as much as possible. The riders are also paired with Junior Riders, children with a history of cancer. The good news for these kids is that we are heading in the right direction. Childhood cancer rates are rising, and treatments are becoming less invasive, with fewer side effects. This is due in part to the incredible efforts of the people of Vancouver Island who have embraced this cause as their own.

hanks to your donations to the Canadian Cancer Society Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, children’s lives have been saved and improved. We have made great progress, but around 950 Canadian children under the age of 15 are diagnosed with cancer every year. Cancer is the top cause of disease-related death among children in Canada and two-thirds of survivors will suffer serious long-term side effects from their treatment. That’s why 80% of the money raised by Tour de Rock funds life-saving research that has lead to earlier detection of childhood cancers, better treatments, and more children surviving and thriving. The remaining 20% of donor dollars fund important support services for children affected by cancer and their familiest. Camp Goodtimes is a medically supervised summer camp that looks like any other kids’ camp, but it provides a unique refuge for Where does the children and families affected money go? by childhood cancer. Kaiden & Hannah Every Tour de Rock team member has their own reasons for riding. This year, three names will stay in the forefront of our minds: Kaiden, Hannah and Lily.

In September of last year, Kaiden’s cancer returned in his neck and spine. During his radiation treatments, Kaiden gathered bravery and strength from ‘The Flash’ - a superhero figurine he carried with him. Devastatingly, Kaiden lost his battle with cancer in March of 2019. This year’s riders will continue to share Kaiden’s story during Tour de Rock, just as he wanted.
At the age of 3, Hannah Day was first diagnosed with a rare cancer that attacks muscle tissue. She underwent intense chemotherapy treatments and 13 months later she went into remission. Sadly, the cancer would come back, and Hannah would endure nearly 7 years of treatment. Earlier this year, Hannah was admitted to Victoria General Hospital after experiencing excruciating headaches, then airlifted to Vancouver where tumours were discovered in her brain. In May 2019, at the age of 9 years old, after 3 cancer diagnoses and 5 relapses, Hannah was removed from life support. Hannah has captured our hearts and inspired us with her strength and courage. She is known to many as a true “Princess Warrior”. This year, we will share Hannah’s story in
her honour. In April of this year, Lily Lecinana wasn’t feeling well. After testing, Lily was rushed to BC Children’s Hospital where she would go on to spend her 10th birthday. Lily was diagnosed with a very aggressive and rare type of Leukemia. Due to the nature of the cancer, treatment also has to be aggressive, including spinal injections to protect the Central Nervous System. Lily has many supports including her family, friends at school and the community of Sooke, who have all rallied behind her. While Lily continues on her journey with cancer, we will be riding for her and all the other children out there currently facing cancer.

In 2014, when Aeson Moen was just a year old, his entire life was turned upside-down. “We thought he just had the flu,” his father Aaron remembers, “my wife Ana took him to the doctor and they found a dark shade on his left lung. They wanted to do more tests and when she told me I just had this sinking feeling in my gut. I got off the phone and told one of my coworkers: ‘I think my son has cancer.’”

Aeson received a diagnosis of neuroblastoma, a type of childhood cancer that affects the nervous system. At the same time as doctors started putting together Aeson’s treatment plan, a research study was taking place to better identify patients who might suffer adverse side effects due to certain drugs. Aeson’s parents agreed to participate in the study, and doctors discovered that had Aeson taken the normal course of treatment prescribed to cure his neuroblastoma, he could have died, or lived with lifelong heart problems. “I honestly believe that if we hadn’t gone through with the study, Aeson wouldn’t be alive

He’s just living life as a normal kid, and that’s what we wanted for him…to just be a normal kid.” Aeson just turned five years old, and his parents are immensely grateful to the doctors, researchers, and donors that made his survival possible. “To anyone considering donating to the Canadian Cancer Society, please do. Thanks to your donations, research was able to identify our son as high risk for heart damage had he followed traditional treatment protocol. Luckily they changed course/medication and he is fine.
