After 151 years of celebrations it’s hard to believe that the Saanich Fair can continue to surprise folks who come to the event. The fair is the oldest continuous agricultural fair west of the Great Lakes, and it has never lost sight of its agricultural roots. Those traditions remain alive and just keep getting better with competitions that showcase all things agricultural. There are jams, jellies, vegetables and every sort of livestock you can imagine. There are displays of sewing and art, community displays and herding dogs that will have the kids squealing in delight. And, of course, there’s the midway where thrill rides keep the kids, and those with a kid inside them, coming back for ‘just on more ride’. Add a rich mixture of entertainers who range from classic rock groups like April Wine to the amazing sounds of Zimbabwe, brought to the Fair by Mufaro Marimba, and the experience just couldn’t get any more eclectic. But most importantly, the Saanich Fair is for families. It’s an experience where everyone will find something to make them laugh, thrill their souls, or have them amazed at new sights or experiences. We welcome you and yours to the Fair. Do your best to see it all but, if that’s just not possible (there is a lot to see), know that next year we’ll be back so you can take in anything you’ve missed. WHAT’S NEW AT THE FAIR
In its 151st year, it’s hard to believe that the Saanich Fair can continue to offer up new and exciting attractions-but they do. There are just too many to list here, but take a look at the list of added attractions and you’ll be amazed at all the things happening at the Fair. The Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary will be (or is that bee?) on hand to learn how to encourage bees on our own backyards. There are bee crafts and, yes, even bee songs to be learned at this unique event. Folks will be able to take in some old fashioned buggies in the West Ring, as well as some Saanich artifacts that might just leave you longing for the good old days. For all you City folk who have never really seen a star-filled sky, telescopes will give you a whole new perspective of the night sky.
The BC Aviation Museum will have some of their newly acquired Lancaster Bomber on display, and if the fact that it was obtained despite the lamentation of the former owners in Toronto makes you smile just a little, that’s okay, too. You’ll also be able to see a world class chainsaw carver, tractor displays, high stepping draft horses and more. And that’s just the new attractions. All of the other activities, including concerts by an incredibly eclectic mix of entertainers, are still a part of the fair. The only drawback to the Saanich Fair is that there’s almost too much to see, but it’s a problem that they’re happy to have. It’s a funfilled family affair, full of life and laughter… and it just keeps getting better.

Although the musicians have changed with the times, after four decades, Prism continues to thrill audiences across Canada with unmistakable rock styling that still gets folks on their feet. The band is famous, not only for its music, but for the many musical careers it’s launched over the years. Consider that Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance have been contributing songwriters and that Prism has been associated and played with a plethora of other fabulous musical talents over the years, and it’s small wonder that the band continues to draw crowds whenever they tour. This Juno Award winning band has had too many milestones to list but they include having their “Spaceship Superstar” chosen as the wake up song for the crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery and, in 2018, being awarded Calgary’s “White Hat”, making them honourary citizens of that city. At that event, it was noticed that another audience member, champion wrestler Hitman Hart, wanted it known that Prism’s “Young and Restless” was his theme song and that he was thrilled to have them join the White Hat club. The band has released a total of 13 studio albums, three compilation albums and one live offering.

Front man, Al Harlow, has taken the band to a new level. You might see him do his Chuck Berry duck walk across the stage or experience his exuberance as he jumps into the audience to play his guitar and belt out his vocals. Harlow is celebrating his 41 years in Prism this year by releasing, ‘Flyin’ and two solo albums, one a retrospective and the other a selection of new material. “We are finding out that nostalgia is not a bad word,” said Harlow.
“It’s great that we continue to appeal to our old fans but we also continue to attract a younger crowd that is just discovering our music, it’s a humbling experience. And I can honestly say that the guys I have now are the best musicians that I have ever had the privilege to play with.” Prism keeps delivering that amazing music at an astoundingly energetic level. After the Saanich Fair, they’ll be on their way to Grand Bend, Ontario and Kingston, Ontario before returning west for a gig in Alberta.

“I kind of see myself as the guardian of the band’s catalogue. The songs fit me like an old pair of jeans but I never get bored with singing them,” Harlow explained. “I find new ways to interpret those songs every time I sing them.”

When Myles Goodwyn, Roy “Nip” Nichol, Brian Greenway, and Richard Lanthier take the stage, it is immediately obvious that this legendary band hasn’t lost a step. Oh, the members have changed over the years, but this is a group that maintains a blistering touring schedule, playing more than 25 dates in 2019, while still creating new sounds for a new generation of fans. It all started back in 1969, when the Henman brothers, David and Ritchie, got together with fellow musician Myles Goodwyn to form the band they called April Wine. They chose the name just because they liked the way it sounded. Well, it turned out that it wasn’t just the name of the band that sounded great, the band itself managed to win fans across Canada and the United States. By 1977 the band was playing the same stage as The Rolling Stones and later that year the band recording Gold and then Platinum sales for their single ‘Forever For Now’. There was a period when Goodwyn struck out on his own, but by 2000, there were repeated calls for the band to get back together and create more of that ‘April Wine sound’. In April of 2010, at the Juno Awards, the band was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during Canadian Music Week in Toronto. They also got themselves a Lifetime Achievement Award for being a part of Canadian music history for 40 years. But past accomplishments aside, the band is still relevant today. In 2018 Goodwyn released a solo album, ‘Myles Goodwyn and Friends of the Blues’ , containing songs that are a departure from the rock/pop music of April Wine, but destined to influence their music as well.
Goodwyn is many things besides founding member of the April Wine. He’s a record producer, guitarist, lead vocalist, songwriter and painter. But as the longest serving and only original member of the iconic band, Goodwyn says that April wine is still a relevant part of his musical life. “April Wine is continuing. I try and slow down in the winter, but I don’t see an end, just a slowing down. There’s still an appetite for the music, so we will keep at it.” And with 16 albums to their name and a loyal following of music fans who still flock to watch them play, that’s a very good thing. April Wine will perform at the Saanich Fair on Sunday, Sept. 1. www.peninsulanewsreview.com

Black Angus While the Saanich Fair will feature some iconic rock music, there’s something about Celtic music that transcends the expected and leaves audiences smiling. Music, after all, is about having fun and finding those feeling deep inside that lift the listener beyond the here and now to transport them to a place where the sheer enjoyment of life can be felt. That’s what Black Angus is all about. Their performances take audiences from Vancouver Island to Ireland and back, with music that is fueled by raw talent and the sheer love of what they do. Gareth Hurwood takes a lead role as the voice, the guitar, the poetry and the passionate love of the music. Alex MacQuaig is a force of nature on upright bass and with haunting harmonies and Sarah Tradewell, on the fiddle brings fire to the performances with an unmatched grace and the love a great tune.

“It’s all about good songs, good humour, good friends and good whiskey,” joked Hurwood. Hurwood is also known as the leader, singer and instrumentalist with the West Coast Celtic group, Kitangus. His work there, and his years of entertaining thousands with his music have allowed him to build a repertoire that he’s brought to Black Angus with amazing results. Black Angus have played gigs in Canada, the United States, and throughout the United Kingdom, but on Monday, Sept. 2, they’ll be at the Saanich Fair with a performance that will leave the audience smiling and singing some of their tunes for the rest of the day.
Tom Salter on drums completes the package with an irresistible beat and a driving energy that provides the heartbeat of the group. The shows have a great energy level and an enthralling stage presence that instantly takes the audience into the fold. The music is impossible to pigeon hole, however. It’s a combination of contemporary Irish, acoustic roots, Americana, West Coast Celtic, blues and old time rock that combines seamlessly to give Black Angus a unique and engaging sound

Strictly speaking, the marimba is a percussion instrument that that can trace it’s origins to the music of west and central Africa. It’s sort of like a xylophone, but the sound of the instrument and the music that it’s a part of bears little resemblance to that instrument. For one thing, this is a joyful sound. Haling primarily from Zimbabwe and southern Africa the infectious music inspires smiles, clapping and dance. The tunes are incredibly complex with a polyrhythmic base that is exciting, dynamic and inspiring.

For Tutu Tatani, it’s a return to his childhood in Zimbabwe where he began playing under the tutelage of Nicholas Manomano. He said that his love for the music is everlasting and that he’s thrilled to be able to share the music with the world. For Barb Roberts, one of the original members of Mufaro, the music is completely removed from her original roots. Born into the back beat of the Canadian prairies, she was raised on a mix of roots, rock and country. “This music is different,” said Roberts, likening Marimba to meditation (albeit a lively sort of meditation). “It takes you away.” David Morin, who plays guitar with the group, describes the African music as “a complex mix of shapes, rich colours and deep felt emotions”. When he first saw a marimba band in 2012 he was immediately attracted by the music’s volcanic rhythm and melody. Although it seemed chaotic and rambunctious, he was immediately attracted to its soul. Morin’s addition to the group has added some new fusion and the incorporation of some new sounds to the music, without losing any of the magic of the infectious South African sound. Mufaro Marimba will perform at the Saanich Fair on Mon., Sept 2.
