MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Even though summer is waving goodbye in our rear-view mirrors, we have a lot to look forward to this fall and winter. Chilliwack is a beautiful city in every season, and the fall colours and cooler weather can make for some unforgettable outdoor experiences. Whether you embrace the cooler temperatures and take advantage of the quiet on our trails in the off-season, or you prefer to stay inside, thereâ€™s something for everyone in this guide. The programs in our Leisure Guide are a collaborative effort. Each Leisure Guide contributor brings their own expertise, and as a team, we work to collectively address the needs and interests of our residents. Similarly, many of our facilities are operated by independent contractors with the expertise and knowledge best suited for daily operations. They help create recreational programming for everyone.

This guide is the result of partnerships between the City of Chilliwack, the Association of Community Programmers and School District No. 33, who help support the community school associations. Facility Rental Information

Whether for a meeting, conference, banquet, wedding, dance, party or sporting event, the City of Chilliwack has a variety of facilities of various sizes that will accommodate your needs. For more information or to book a facility or sports field please contact the Recreation and Culture Department at 604-793-2904.

The Landing Sports Centre

There is more to this facility than meets the eye. Located at 45530 Spadina Avenue, this facility has the ability to host large functions, multiple sporting events such as pickleball, volleyball, roller derby or tennis. For information on drop-in tennis times or fees contact the Recreation and Culture Department. The Landing Sports Centre is also designed with rooms that will accommodate meetings, weddings and other social gatherings. The main floor has a seating capacity of up to 1870 people. The Loft are can host between 250 to 300 people (depending on the set up) and comes equipped with a kitchen. The Clover Room is where a small meeting of up to 30 people can be hosted.

Evergreen Hall

Located at 9291 Corbould Street the Evergreen Hall is a prime location for weddings, meetings of various sizes and sporting events. Currently it serves as the home base of the Chilliwack and District Seniors Resource Centre. The large Cheam Room has a built in stage and stage risers are also available for use. The room is a full size gymnasium which will host 400 to 450 fifty people in a banquet setting and approximately 650 people in a theatre setting. The Cheam Room also houses a commercial kitchen and a segregated beverage serving area. The Sleese Room is a mid-size meeting room which has a capacity of approximately 80 people and has access to the commercial kitchen along with the Cheam Room. The Minto Room at Evergreen Hall provides the ideal location for a small meeting or social gathering as it is capable of hosting between 20-25 people.

Outdoor Sports Venues

The City of Chilliwack has more than 58 sports fields and 95 ball diamonds available to the community for recreation and league play. All groups and organizations wanting to play on any of these fields must first obtain a Facility Use Agreement from the Recreation and Culture Department. Regular sports groups should contact their league scheduler for times and fields available.

Sardis Sports Complex

The Sardis Sports Complex (formally Twin Rinks Arena), located at 5725 Tyson Road hosts, three full size sheets of ice, ideal for hosting large sporting events all year round. Chilliwack Minor Hockey, Cheam Figure Skating Club, Chilliwack Ringette and the Sardis Flyers Speed Skating Club are just a few of the organizations who call Sardis Sports Complex home. If you are interested in participating in one of the many public skates but do not own your own skates there are rentals available for you to access at Sardis Sports Complex. The facility is also very popular for childrenâ€™s parties as a retrofitted dressing room is available to support the special occasion (call 604-793-2904 for information on birthday party packages). The facility also has two meeting rooms available to the public to rent. One of the meeting rooms has a 30 person capacity and the other room is capable of hosting over 90 people. Both meeting rooms are equipped with audio-visual equipment available for rent as well.

Portable Display Screen

Are you looking for a dynamic way to promote a special event? The City of Chilliwack has is 10 feet high by 17 feet long and contains more than 245,000 LED lights (just like the screens you see in many major sporting venues). The Cityâ€™s portable screen has the capability of displaying DVD/video presentations, cable TV or live camera feeds. Call 604-793-2904 for more information on booking the portable display screen.

From larger community parks like Townsend Park or Vedder Park, to the quaint neighbourhood parks across the city, Chilliwack’s many parks offer something for every family. This season, bring the family out for a picnic and play at the new Peach Park, engage in a friendly disc golf competition at Walden Park, or grab a friend and hit the new tennis courts at Watson Glen Park! Exhibits Now Showing on our Main Floor Five Faces, Five Corners: The Social Experience of Chilliwack’s Downtown explores the evolving social landscape of Chilliwack’s Five Corners area. Located on Stó:lō First Nation’s S’ólh Téméxw (Our World), the exhibition will trace the downtown’s humble origins at Chilliwack Landing to the bustling centre of Five Corners today. From diner nooks to the hitching post, the exhibition will highlight the people and social spaces of Chilliwack’s downtown, highlighting the accomplishments of five individuals from Chilliwack’s past and present whose lives were and continue to be intimately intertwined with the history and development of Five Corners.

School Programs

The Chilliwack Museum and Archives offers a variety of programs for school groups; exploring Chilliwack history through hands-on classes, crafts, and interactive tours. Group exhibit tours and walking tours of the historic downtown are also available to members of the public so if you’re looking for a fun, educational activity the Chilliwack Museum is your destination! Archives

The Archives, located at Evergreen Hall, are available for drop-in researchers or by appointment. The collection includes: maps, newspapers, municipal records, and photographs. Archival photo prints and files can also be purchased. Our archivist, Tristan Evans, welcomes the public on the last Friday of every month at 3:00 pm with a behind-the-scenes tour of the Archives! Learn more about how documents and artefacts are stored. Admission is free.

Seniors’ Resource Society is a charitable organization providing programs, services, resources and activities to seniors. Our goal is to encourage seniors to be active, socialize, learn and access support.

Be Active

Activity programs cover a range of interests including - Zumba, Walking group, several levels of yoga, Strength and Balance, Pickleball, Floor Curling, Dance and Line Dancing, Carpet Bowling and Badminton.

Socialize

Meet or make new friends at our Tuesday Social and at our Tea Dance.

Learn

Many resources and support service are available including: Housing, medical equipment, meal programs and health support. Our Community Education workshops are presented regularly on a variety of topics that are of interest and concern to seniors. These programs are available to all local seniors with no membership requirement or fees.

Access Support

Volunteer Grocery Shopping, community volunteer Income Tax program (for low income seniors or disabled persons), Assistance with Forms, and Snow Angels are programs that provide extra help when it’s needed.

Bus Excursions

Enjoy a concert, event or casino in Vancouver or in Washington State and leave the driving to us. Venture further afield on an extended trip to our Victoria Christmas Getaway or to Sun Peaks. Or join us for a longer excursion to the Grand Canyon and Laughlin or join us for International travel in 2020 to Italy. Our tour coordinator has organized and planned getaways like these for many years. Come and join the hundreds of seniors who enjoy these trips each year. Activities are held at the Evergreen Hall and other City of Chilliwack facilities throughout the city. Society membership is needed for bus trips and activities and other fees may apply. Brochures, resources, bus trips lists and a calendar of events is available at our office in Evergreen Hall, and the Customer service kiosk at Cottonwood Mall or on our website, www.cdsrs.ca. First Aid & Advance Leadership Courses A variety of First Aid Courses and Recert’s are offered through the Lifesaving Society or the Canadian Red Cross at our Facilities. These courses are taught in accordance with ILCOR. Courses are suitable for those looking for training for the workplace or for their own general interest.

CPR-C/AED COURSE & RECERTIFICATION

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) trains rescuers in the skills and knowledge needed to assess and provide basic life support to patients with airway, breathing or circulatory emergencies. Candidates will learn the Principles of first aid, the use of barrier devices, how to call EMS, adult, child and infant CPR skills and AED use, adult, child and infant conscious and unconscious choking procedures, circulatory emergencies to include recognition and treatment of a heart attack, angina, stroke and TIA. Pre-Course Requirements: None

Standard First Aid (SFA) is the most comprehensive first aid training program for the general public. BRONZE MEDALLION

Bronze Medallion teaches lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education. Rescuers learn advanced lifesaving techniques for challenging rescues of increased risk. Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced lifesaving training and an introduction to safety supervision. Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance (600m in 18-min). Bronze Cross includes CPR-C and is one of the prerequisite awards for Lifeguarding (National Lifeguard) training program. Bronze Cross is also worth 2 Grade 11 High School Credits. The National Lifeguard (NL) Pool certification is designed to develop the fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards. Meet Martha Marks Where: Cheam Leisure Centre Doing what?: Assistant General Manager MARTHA IS THE FACILITY AND ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER WITH RECREATION EXCELLENCE, LOCATED AT THE CHEAM LEISURE CENTRE. In this role, she leads a team providing mentorship in all aspects of our community programing and facility wellness areas, including weight room, fitness programs and social media. A big believer in wholeness, she supports a state of being perfectly well in body, soul (mind, will and emotions) and spirit. Martha is a qualified fitness instructor, personal trainer and administrator, and holds certification with BCRPA and Canfit Pro. Martha is no stranger to the fitness industry as she has spent seven years as a fitness instructor, personal trainer and office administrator. These experiences taught her the importance of being a real and active part of individual goal setting and achieving. Her personal experience of health and wellness across fitness centres has built a passion and purpose for caring and coaching of individuals and community programming. She has helped our community centre to achieve our mission statement “Serious about FUN” with overseeing and implementing a variety of community connections. Her varied background in fitness provided the perfect foundation for the role she plays in our community programming. She is passionate about wellness and its possibilities.

This non-impact cardio class is designed for seniors or beginners to fitness. Participate in a cardio, strength, and flexibility class with a friendly atmosphere and great music!

CHINESE LINE DANCING

This is an exercise performed to unique Chinese music and rooted in traditional and modern Chinese dances. The exercise provides benefits to mind and body. The class has drawn more than just Chinese people’s interest. The music is aimed for joy and relaxation, and the moves are set to strengthen muscles, bones and balance, promote health and wellbeing. The exercise is combined with aerobic, yoga and Tai chi elements.

CYCLE EXPRESS

A shorter cycle class with high-intensity drills to challenge your endurance, strength, and cardiovascular abilities. Bike set up and cycle basics will be covered. Our certified instructors will help you set up and go over cycle basics.

Each movement is designed to focus on core stability, ensuring a balanced workout that will challenge all levels of fitness. Kangoo Boots are required for this class. Bring your own Kangoo boots or rent from the Instructor (only a few available for rent each class). Bouncing in Kangoo Boots reduces shock impact by 80%.

PILATES

Pilates is a body conditioning routine that helps build flexibility and long, lean muscles, strength and endurance in the legs, abdominals, arms, hips, and back. It puts emphasis on spinal and pelvic alignment, breathing to relieve stress and allow adequate oxygen flow to muscles, developing a strong core or centre, and improving coordination and balance.

POWER CIRCUIT

Maximize your cardio, burn tons of calories, develop core strength and have fun doing it! This class offers intervals, circuits, obstacles, agility, functional strength and movement training using the latest techniques in fitness to help you achieve your goals. Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Sharing Nature with our Community

Come out and discover the tranquility of this nature reserve, where the focus is protection of this fragile wetland ecosystem and the flora and fauna that call this site home. Enjoy a walk and watch for a variety of wildlife, including one of the largest breeding colonies of Pacific Great Blue Herons in B.C. Hundreds of herons nest on site every year from March to July, but herons can be spotted fishing in the wetlands throughout the year. There are no admission fees to walk the site or to visit the Rotary Interpretive Centre, but donations are welcome to help support the conservation of this undyked floodplain habitat. The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve Society manages the programs and services at this City of Chilliwack site, which is located along the Vedder River at the south end of Sumas Prairie Road in Greendale.

School Programs: Engaging environmental education programs for your class any time of the year. In particular, check out our Fall/Winter Salmon program, or year round programs such as Beavers Plus or Wetlands Diversity, and book Wildlife Art, alongside one of our nature programs for an extra special experience. Homeschools: Homeschool children can have the wonderful experience of attending a weekly program in the fall that focuses on connecting with nature through outdoor experience and art. Art Workshops: Keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for a variety of different children’s, family, and adult wildlife art workshops. Children’s Groups: Youth groups, day camps, daycares can book an engaging Fall or Winter field trip. Adult Groups: Let us show you around and engage your members in learning about the wetlands and wildlife. Scouts & Guides: Let us design a fun outdoor program.

Heritage Park Chilliwack Heritage Park is a 65 acre park that boasts a 150,000 square foot building which can accommodate a number of events. Trade Shows, Conventions, Concerts, Dog Shows, Horse Shows, Arena Cross Events, ABA BMX Bike Grand Nationals and local club events just to name a few. There is a seven acre field with plenty of space for camping for your event. There is also a rodeo arena as well as two outdoor sand arenas for your many different equestrian and agricultural events. All arenas are equipped with outdoor lighting for those evening rentals. Heritage Park, which has been operational since July 2001, is ideally and conveniently located just off the Trans Canada Highway at Exit 116. This allows for easy access by those within Chilliwack as well as people living in the Lower mainland. The striking presence of this 150,000 square foot red building and 65 acre grounds also attracts travellers from all over the Canada, as well as many

visitors from the United States. Heritage Park is a versatile facility. Features include a flexible public address system, box office and show office. The building is comprised of four floors; two are concrete floors that measure approximately 35,000 square feet each. There is also a 48,000 square foot dirt floor and a 30,000 square foot dirt floor. We have 150 portable box stalls for your equestrian event that can be put up on either the concrete or dirt floors, depending on your requirements. The building houses a portable stage, as well as tables and chairs. Our washroom facilities include showers and are handicapped accessible. Heritage Park is not only a fine multi-use facility, but it also offers you a management and staff who are committed to your satisfaction. We would be pleased to work with you to help make your event a success.
