Camosun College serves the communities of southern Vancouver Island and the south Gulf Islands located in the traditional territories of the Lkwungen (Esquimalt and Songhees), Malahat, Pacheedaht, Scia’new, T’Sou-ke and WSÁNEC (Pauquachin, Tsartlip, Tsawout, Tseycum) peoples. We acknowledge our traditional hosts and honour their welcome and graciousness to the students who seek knowledge here. “Camosun” (pronounced Cam-O-sun) was chosen, as it was an early name for Victoria. It is originally an Lkwungen name for an area of Victoria “where different waters meet and are transformed.”

A Learners' Experience Dylan has been working with Seaspan since 2001. He started as an entry level labourer. Among other positions, he has since challenged his Red Seal (Painter and Decorator), ITA Certified Shipyard Labourer and most recently has become a senior chargehand. It became clear as Dylan progressed into his current role that there was specific training needed for his front-line staff. One such program is the Coating Inspector Program, offered by the NACE International and the Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC). Working with Camosun Coastal Centre and Seaspan Director of Operations, Dylan was given the green light to work with the Learning Solutions Team to plan and schedule this highly sought after training. This gave his employees the opportunities to build knowledge and skills while working for Seaspan. These courses are not often offered in Victoria, the closest courses being offered in Portland, Oregon. In 2015, Dylan became a Certified SSPC Level 2 Protective Coatings Inspector. Since this time, Dylan has progressed his Protective Coatings Training and currently holds Certifications as SSPC Level 3 Protective Coatings Inspector, NACE Level 3 Protective Coatings inspector with Marine Endorsement and SSPC Protective Coatings Specialist Certification. These programs have been fundamental in both Dylan and his front-line employees' development to recognize the importance of proper surface preparation, protective coating applications and inspection. As a direct result, the Seaspan teams operate more efficiently during dry-dock work periods on cruiseships, naval frigates, submarines and many other commercial projects. The Director of Operations and Seaspan have been very supportive of these specialty training efforts and understand the importance of developing and maintaining qualified personal for the years of long term contracts and programs. Dylan contacted Michelle Traore, Manager of Business Development and Contract Training to create a custom solution for the Seaspan Employees. She then, organized his team's specific training needs, including: NACE Level 1& 2, NACE Marine Coatings Technology, SSPC C-13 UHP Water Jetting program and SSPC C-12 Spray Application Program. “You are only as good as your people”, Dylan believes. “I knew that this program would prepare our front line employees not only for their current position, but open doors for new opportunities.” Seaspan has since recognized a higher retention of employees, because of this custom training. Dylan has also currently completed the Leadership Development Certificate Program through Continuing Education at Camosun College. He has found a need to build his leadership skills, especially in a trades industry. “I really enjoy the program” he shares, “I have built a community outside of work where I see familiar faces in the classes I take.” These experiences have added value to my leadership skills and given me the tools needed operate efficiently in my role as a senior leader. Dylan is an instructor for the Ship Repair Entry Level Training (SRELT) program, offered through the Camosun Coastal Centre, which gives Indigenous students certified training for the marine industry. He continues to be an advocate for Camosun Continuing Education & Contract Training and has hired many students from the program.

Specify and Model Requirements Business analysis models are visual representations of requirements and designs that convey a lot of information in a concise and understandable manner. Collaborative elicitation uses these models to provide a framework for asking the right questions, and for analyzing and validating the results with stakeholders. Different stakeholders have different perspectives about the requirements, and by using a combination of visual models, business analysts can help to discover and consolidate those perspectives. In this course participants will explore techniques and practices for identifying and understanding the stakeholder requirements that define the solution scope, and for eliciting and describing the requirements.

Creative Writing Fiction Writing Fundamentals Part 1

Fiction Writing Fundamentals Part 2

Wanting to write isn’t enough – being a writer requires skill sets, paradigm shifts, and survival strategies. Critic and bestselling author Robert J. Wiersema will lead aspiring writers from inspiration and preparation through writing and revision. The focus of this course is deceptively simple: we will look at the writing of a single scene. Scenes are the building blocks of all fiction, which is the basis for writing longer pieces, both short stories and novels. This course is intended for writers new to writing fiction, or those seeking to hone their skills or remind themselves of the basics.

Building on the fundamentals explored in Part 1, this course will continue our exploration of the core skills and strategies for writing fiction for the developing writer. In addition to lectures, directed readings and discussions, Part 2 will also incorporate group workshopping of student fiction. With this section, we will build on our experience writing the contained scene and expand outward to short stories and novels. We will also look at workshopping, revision and roads to publication.

It took Astrid only three classes before she didn’t have to look at the keys. “The instructor took the time to provide specific individual feedback, she really is an amazing person.” Astrid is encouraged to take further courses through Continuing Education and at Camosun College. As a business owner for the past 13 years, Astrid has found a desire to expand her skillset. “I am currently three-quarters through the Business Administration program and am enjoying it,” she shares.

A Learners' Experience Dianne recently completed the Camosun Continuing Education MS-Office Certificate Program with distinction, as a need to further her professional skills. The 210 hour intensive program provides learners with practical skills in Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, and OneNote.

Dianne believes these skills are crucial to her career pathway. “I love learning new systems and streamlining existing processes with increased accuracy” she says. Dianne knew a lot about Microsoft Office in her current role, but wanted to learn from an expert and receive the credential to prove her skills to her employer. As an older adult who has been working for a number of years, Dianne searched for a non-traditional way of receiving her education. She needed the program to be flexible to work around her full-time job and other personal commitments. “I have incredible gratitude to the program and to my experience in Camosun Continuing Education,” shares Dianne. The MS-Office program, and others through Continuing Education, have course options during the day, evening and weekend. Dianne raves about her instructor and the program, stating “Caroline is god, and made sure the course fit the needs of each student. ” The program also allowed her to test her own abilities and gain soft skills such as time management and personal boundary setting. Camosun offered a flexible learning option for Dianne, and she knew it was where she wanted to study. “I grew up in a small town where post-secondary education wasn’t accessible at all for most of us” says Dianne, “Having satellite classrooms and blended course delivery options creates accessibility. “No one can say Camosun isn’t giving the community what is needed,” adds Dianne. “Camosun is dressed and ready by keeping ahead of the curve.”
