Red Deer’s charm is its small-town vibe R

ed Deer may be a city, but it still has that small-town appeal. Local historian Michael Dawe said he has a lot of memories of Red Deer while the community was still on the smaller side. “When my father was growing up, Red Deer was 3,000. When I was growing up, it was 15,000 to 20,000. It was a much smaller community, so you got to know a lot of people,” Dawe said.
He said he rarely goes anywhere in Red Deer where he doesn’t run into someone he knows, many whom also have deep roots in the community. “My mother’s family was a farm family on the southeast side of Red Deer going back well over 100 years,” Dawe said. Former mayor Morris Flewwelling, who has called Red Deer home for 56 years, said the community tends to be quite stable. It grew quite rapidly in the 1980s and 1990s, but there is still a feeling of community. “People like living here, so they live here a long
time. You get a feeling that people know one another,” Flewwelling said. He said regular events like the Red Deer Public Market, amenities like the parks, and facilities like the Enmax Centrium give people an opportunity to gather and visit. People get to know each other working for big employers like Red Deer College, Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and Nova Chemicals, which contributes to a sense of community.

“Red Deer used to be a little bit more standoffish. You kind of had to make your mark in Red Deer before you were totally accepted. But I think that has drifted away. I think people are welcomed for what they can contribute.” Flewwelling said Red Deer is far enough away from Calgary and Edmonton that it has an identity of its own, but it’s geographically small enough so people venture beyond their own neighbourhoods, and it doesn’t take long to get from one end of the city to the other. Dawe agreed it’s easy to get around Red Deer. “People may complain about rush-hour traffic, but in really backed up conditions, you’re only backed up for five minutes or so. In bigger communities, you can be stuck out on an arterial road and be not moving for 20 minutes, 45 minutes or longer. We don’t have those kinds of problems,” Dawe said. Tara Lodewyk, the city’s planning services director, said the ease of commuting around the city is definitely one of the traits people appreciate about Red Deer. Many only work a few kilometres from home and can still drive home for lunch. “You’ll hear it often when people describe the quality of life in Red Deer, that it’s 10 minutes to get anywhere within the city,” Lodewyk said. She said the trail network is an option for people who want to cycle or walk, which also helps them travel around the city. Lodewyk said having a central downtown, that isn’t broken up
with freeways, with older buildings, treed boulevards and classic lamp posts, creates a friendly pedestrian environment and adds to the sense of tradition. Dawe said Red Deer’s rural roots are another reason for its sense of cohesiveness. That agricultural connection continues to this day with Agri-Trade Equipment Expo at Westerner Park. “Our annual summer festival is Westerner Days, which is a pretty much agricultural and rural based,” Dawe said. Red Deer also has a small farm museum right in the middle of the city — Sunnybrook Farm Museum. Museum executive director Ian Warwick said many of the volunteers at Sunnybrook have an agricultural background and they donate more than 10,000 hours a year to maintaining the site. “There is a sense of personal ownership when you have that commitment from volunteers. I think that’s what makes Red Deer unique,” Warwick said. Several other community groups have faithful volunteers, like Red Deer Food Bank, Red Deer Festival of Trees, Red Deer Christmas Bureau, and recently, the 2019 Canada Winter Games, he said. “There are so many volunteers who are willing to come out and invest in their community.” In a bigger city, people just become numbers, he said. “In a city of 100,000, one person can make a big difference, so that’s what makes me love Red Deer so much. It has a real impact, just one person,” Warwick said.

oing to university, I lived in the northwest of Calgary, while one of my best friends who had already entered the workforce, lived in the southwest. In good traffic, it was at least a 40-minute drive. We got together twice in one year. Growing up in Red Deer, we lived two blocks away from each other. With another close friend, we would ride our bikes to school together and hang out five or six days of the week, just shooting the breeze, mountain biking, playing pool, ping-pong, and hockey at the outdoor rink across the street.

Reflecting back, the size, layout, and culture and amenities within our community created a perfect lifestyle for a kid growing up. It is something I took for granted at the time, yet enjoyed immensely. Now as an adult in my mid-thirties, with a house

Most weekday mornings, I first drive my son to school, then my daughter to dayhome, before coming to work at the chamber. The three stops require travelling 12 kilometres
and take just over 15 minutes to complete. My co-workers and I have been jogging at lunch to train for a fun run. Leaving from our office on Gaetz Avenue, it is 500 metres to the beautiful trail system that runs along Piper Creek. From there, we have access to a seemingly endless trail system that intertwines and connects all parts of the city. My family uses the same trails on the weekend to take our kids to different parks and playgrounds, and to ride to community events like the farmers’ markets. Throughout the years, a few different job opportunities in bigger cities have come and gone, as my family couldn’t fathom giving up the significant lifestyle benefits afforded by living here. Red Deer certainly isn’t unique in being a midsized city with short commutes and a trail system. Yet, the quantity and quality of ours is exceptional and an attribute worthy of boasting about and consciously appreciating. A few years back, when the economy was much stronger, the chamber had regular inquiries from businesses considering moving operations to central Alberta. Along with our partners, we would put together packages outlining the benefits of having a business here. This would include attributes such as land availability, labour statistics, and tax and regulatory information. It would also include, partially because it was asked for specifically, information on the culture and lifestyle.

lanning outdoor events is always a gamble in central Alberta, where snowflakes can appear during any month of
the year. But when the celestial elements align just right — the sun is shining, the sky’s a cloudless blue and there’s nary a hailstone in sight — there’s nowhere better to be than listening to live music on the Ross Street Patio in Red Deer. Diane Hermary and her friends rarely miss a Wednesday patio show — the music starts at 4:30 p.m. to coincide with the Downtown Farmer’s Market and goes until 6:30 p.m.
“For me, it’s about creating community and a vibrant downtown,” said Hermary. But it’s also about hanging out with friends, hearing great tunes, and supporting local artists and entrepreneurs along Ross Street. “We’re always there on Wednesdays,” added Hermary, who enjoys the summertime vibe. Patio concerts can also be heard on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. There are monthly Friday night Patio Parties from 6 to 9 p.m. on July 12 and Aug. 9. As well, Saturday Socials are now held from 6 to 10 p.m. on July 20, Aug. 17 and Sept. 14.

Many assets and attractions in Red Deer BY SAM AND BONNIE DENHAAN SPECIAL TO THE ADVOCATE
R
ed Deer is a midsize city that has a large number of assets and attractions, which we appreciate. We like the parks and trail system, which is very accessible and well maintained. The city has, in time, set aside wonderful natural spaces such as Kerry Wood Nature Center, Sunnybrook Farm, an extensive trail system and Fort Normandeau. These were spaces set aside before the inevitable urban growth and development. Red Deer is surrounded by rich agricultural land that enhances the natural beauty of the landscape through the seasons. We are not original to Red Deer, but moved here after my retirement from government service in the Northwest Territories. After living in larger and smaller communities, we settled in Red Deer at the recommendation of a family member. The choice came quickly after a weekend fly-in to view a number of properties. Preferring a simple lifestyle, we were happy to have found a home to fit our needs. Our list of preferences included a smaller bungalow in a quiet neighbourhood with public

Only after settling in did we become aware of and enjoy the community identity of Red Deer. Being lifelong church members, we joined the nearby Sunnybrook United Church, where we were introduced to a number of like-minded people active in community services and interests. We became aware of and joined the Golden Circle and Central Alberta Council on Aging, Friends of Medicare, and Stephen Lewis’ Foundation
for Grandmas for Africa. In 1998, Habitat for Humanity had a chapter in Red Deer, which was inactive. The availability of the Red Deer north railway lands, and the city’s need for lower income housing created opportunity for new activity building a significant number of single family houses. My years in the construction industry let me contribute to this project. Support from many suppliers and contractors and volunteers helped families to add their hours of sweat equity together to build a community. The Habitat for Humanity ReStore became a location to donate and reuse materials for lower cost. The critical need for more affordable housing resulted in the mayor’s taskforce on ending homelessness and the Central Alberta Poverty Reduction Alliance, which is an ongoing interest of mine. We have enjoyed a large circle of friends and the companionship and mutual support through all these groups of community-minded citizens. We hope for the heart of Red Deer to continue to care for and serve all its citizens, regardless of income and circumstances. Sam and Bonnie Denhaan are a retired Red Deer couple.

Twyla Joy Lapointe, a staff member at The Hub on Ross Street, is also a big fan of the Ross Street Patio, saying “These concerts add flavour to our community.” “Our Alberta musicians offer some of the best music… While we have our Alberta climate to contend with, we’re always grateful for the music,” said Lapointe. The melodies and harmonies come courtesy of talented local bands of all genres — from country to pop to rap and rock. The picnic tables and umbrellas are provided by the city. ed Deer College doesn’t just impact the lives of students. It is a benefit to all of central Alberta. RDC adds cultural, social and economic value to the region, with a total annual impact of $539.6 million, which translates to 7,316 jobs supported, president and CEO Joel Ward said at a Red Deer & District Chamber of Commerce luncheon earlier this year. When RDC officially becomes a university, that impact will be increased, he added. “Our goal would be to double the economic impact of this institution and double our enrolment in
the next 10 years,” said Ward. The college had many notable highlights in the past year that impacted the community: gaining university status, the opening of the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, a new residence building and Alternative Energy Lab, the creation of a partnership with the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre, hosting the Canada Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Volleyball Championships and officially revealing the institution’s new name – Red Deer University. “This has been a year unlike any other year in the 55-year history of this college. … It sets the stage for a future we will all enjoy and benefit from.”

The CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10 Ward said RDC is committed to introducing “innovative programming,” such as cyber security and artificial intelligence. “We have to have programs that will meet current and future job needs.” Red Deer University will be “different” from other universities in Canada, he added. “Different for us means meeting the needs of students and communities in an applied and practical way as a comprehensive, regional, teaching university.” Ward said after becoming RDU, the institution will continue to offer apprenticeship training, career certificates and diplomas, academic upgrading, university transfer and continuing education, as well as having its own degrees. “What we do now,

we will continue to do. We will evolve and grow over time. “It’s not like we’re flipping a switch, and all of a sudden, we’re a university offering every university program. It takes time … to get that work done.” At the luncheon, Ward said there were two more things that need to be done before RDC can officially become RDU: change the governance structure to match university standards and create a 10-year academic plan and budget. Peter Nunoda will officially take over as RDC president on Sept. 3. “The future is very bright as we work together to achieve what this community and region have dreamed about for a long time,” said Nunoda. “It is our responsibility to make the vision of a high-quality comprehensive post-secondary institution a reality for generations to come.”

Continuing A Century-Old Story Welcome to our 100-year celebration. This year, we’re not just celebrating a century-old business: we’re celebrating the continuation of a century-old story, one that planted its roots in the heart of this remarkable community. When Mitchell & Jewell first opened its door 100 years ago – under a different name, A.B. Mitchell Jewellers – I’m sure no one had any idea the legacy that lied ahead. And yet, since day one, our core values have remained constant: the importance of an independent, family-owned and operated business that works as hard for its customers as they do for their community. A.B. Mitchell opened the business in 1919. Focusing on establishing a name synonymous with quality, Mitchell later invited Bob and Doris Jewell to become his business partners to expand
that quality name with that of refined creativity and artistry. In 1979, Richard, Bob and Doris Jewell’s son, acquired the family business and continued his parent’s legacy, ensuring customers received quality service, as well as exemplary products. In 2012, it was time for the story to be handed off to new owners, namely me and Granada. Though we purchased Mitchell & Jewell nearly 8 years ago, we’ve been in the jewellery industry for much longer. As secondgeneration jewellers, we’ve learned a lot from those before us, including Granada’s parents, Larry and Shirley, who owned a jewellery store in Grand Forks, BC and later in Whitecourt, AB. Granada and I worked alongside them—making it a true family business—until their retirement in 2001, at which point we took over the store. 12 years later, when we were granted the opportunity
to become a part of the Mitchell & Jewell family, we both knew we had to take it. The chance to contribute to this company’s, as well as this community’s, story was not an opportunity we were willing to miss. To celebrate this 100-year milestone, we’ve chosen to give back to the people who made the last 100 years possible: you, our amazing and welcoming community. For our main event, we’ll be giving away one diamond – each with a unique serial number – for the first 50 weeks of the year. At the end of the year, we’ll make a draw from these serial numbers. The winner will receive a custom-made, $20,000 Canadian Maple Leaf Diamond pendant. But, that’s just the beginning of our celebrations. We’ll be announcing other events, giveaways, and promotions as we move into 2019, all aimed at

entral Albertans who are curious about the area’s history have the resources to find answers. The Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery aims to help visitors understand the people, history and culture of central Alberta. The institution, which began as the Red Deer and District Museum in 1973, consists of more than 90,000 artifacts. It includes “one of the finest collections of clothing and textiles in Western Canada, as well as an extensive collection of First Nations and Inuit art,” according to the museum. There are significant collections of military history, decorative arts, the history of commerce and agriculture in Red Deer, visual arts created by artists from central Alber-

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, located along the QE2 Highway north of 32nd Street, features an inventory of more than 15,000 artifacts in its collection and continues to add new acquisitions through donations. Clothing, equipment, trophies, medals, programs and more from our sports history can be seen at the museum. “The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum is an interactive, hands-on celebration of Alberta’s sporting history,” the institution’s website says. The 7,000-plus “square feet of exhibit space includes a multi-sport area with virtual baseball, basketball, football, hockey and soccer, a 200-metre wheelchair challenge, a Treadwall climbing wall, the Orest Korbutt Theatre, Hall of Fame Gallery and much more.”

Walking around Red Deer and meeting people makes this city special BY PEGGY FREEMAN SPECIAL TO THE ADVOCATE
A
fter living in Red Deer for 52 years, I’m adding up what I love about the place. Hmm, everyone says, “The trail system.” True, true, but what about … the library, the dog parks, the pools (four of them), the water park? These are all wonderful, but all of these are “things.”
Some folks we’ve missed on winter walks, some pessimists are still wearing parkas. Down at the corner, we’ll see the deer who’ve come out of the forest to sit and sun on the grass median. They ignore us and we ignore them. Well, you get the picture of our (almost) daily walks. It sounds like the neighbourhood is more dogs than people, but the two go together. Even the elderly retriever, just past the deer corner, lifts his head from his porch and says “Voof.” It’s all we expect; he’s quite elderly. Of course, there are nice people everywhere, not just in my neighbourhood. I was in Tim’s one day, waiting in line for my coffee. The young man in front of me turned and said,
“Can I buy you a coffee?” I said, “Are you into old ladies, or what?” He laughed and said, “I’m a long way from home and you remind me of my mom.” So we talked, and (being a busybody) I nagged him to phone home. I used to work at the bookstore and I loved all those readers, but retirement put me into the library as a patron. Don’t let anyone tell you that libraries are passe. The place is humming with activities, conversation and outreach. So, illiterate rule-breaking dogs, sassy cats, weather-watching walkers, to say nothing of homesick Tim’s customers, it’s the people of Red Deer that chat you up and cheer you up. It’s home.

Peggy Freeman has lived in Red Deer for more than five decades. I have to say, “The people” — especially the ones in my neighbourhood, where I’ve lived for 50 years and walked the perimeters of the subdivision hundreds of times. Let me tell you about those walks, those people, and those pets. It’s a spring evening, and a good one for a walk. We head west into the sun. Two little girls are dancing on the porch next door, radio blasting. There were 64 kids on this street when we arrived long ago with three more. Now, there are about 12, with two new babies. People are sweeping sidewalks and turning soil in the flower beds. One couple is washing their plastic fence with white cloths and soapy water. Our old friend Marvin, the white-muzzled dachshund, is strolling with his owner. She and I agree that winter is over at last. Babe, a young girl pup from next door, is likely out too. She gets many walks. On the east side of the schoolyard, a ball game begins. We watch long enough to see white pants sliding into home plate. The soccer game on the south side of the schoolyard features some new Canadians. The handsome players are varying shades of brown and the game is fast. Two big dogs are by the monkey bars. A round sign with a horizontal line says they are not allowed, but who knew? Besides, somebody is throwing a Frisbee. We pass the church and the corner store. Here and there, we meet friends and dogs out for walks; we learned the dogs’ named before we met the owners.

Rich history on display downtown
W
hether you’re a tourist or a regular resident of Red Deer, exploring the downtown can provide a rich experience of the city’s history through its collection of statues. Part of these statues is what’s called The Ghost Collection, an attraction initiated by the Downtown Business Association designed to tell the history of the community. It is one of the largest life-size bronze sculpture collections in the country, according to the City of Red Deer. A walking tour can be found on the City of Red Deer’s website at www.reddeer.ca.
ABOVE: This statue, done by Danek Mozdzenski in 1996, is of Francis Wright Galbraith enjoying a coffee while reading the Red Deer Advocate. Galbraith became the owner and editor of the Advocate back in 1906. Also a politician, Galbraith happened to be the first mayor of the newly incorporated City of Red Deer in 1913.
In this sculpture, created by Brian McArthur in 2012, Julietta Sorensen is looking for her husband, Gordon, to arrive on the last bus of the day. The sculpture is titled Waiting for Gordon, a significant piece, as the Sorensens started a bus service in Red Deer and Red Deer County in 1933. They later sold their bus service to the City of Red Deer in the 1960s, which led to the city’s current public transit system.

A
n Oriole Park resident started with a vision: to have green space that provides more than just nice looks. The dream started about three years ago – which is also when Brittany Jevne decided to have a forest garden in her neighbourhood. Her then “tiny dream” became a project for the Oriole Park Community Association. This summer, the Oriole Food Forest is expected to come to fruition when the community plants edibles such as strawberries, rhubarbs, horseradish, spearmint, Saskatoon berries and so on. The goal is to get all the perennials in the forest, so they don’t have to be replanted each summer. “Everything that’s going to be planted in there will either be beneficial to another plant, or it will be edible,” the Red Deer mom said. The space, at Odstone Green and Oxbow, is one of the largest green spaces in Red Deer. Here, a pear-shaped 40-by-70 foot part of the land will be converted into a food forest on Odstone Green, said Jevne. “This one food forest will be put up by us, the community, and will be maintained by the community as well, except for the trees, which will be planted at a later date, because the city wants to maintain the trees due to disease control,” Jevne said.

She said every summer, the association will host an event, such as taking out the weeds, to maintain the forest. Apart from providing free berries for your Saskatoon berry pie in the next few years, the space will also bring people together. “It’s to improve environmental and social conditions by creating a vibrant and healthy forest for Oriole Park, but is open to everyone,” she said. Jevne wanted a safe space for her four children to explore and learn about where our food comes from. “I am studying to be an herbalist, so we like to go out and find plants that are edible, medicinal, and I wanted somewhere safe where kids could do that.” The forest will also serve as a natural wind breaker, and attract and provide nesting sites for pollinators and other small animals. The ground work started last summer. This summer, the Oriole Park Community Association hosted a fundraiser to raise money for the project. The goal was just over $2,000. The association has also been working on an agreement with the City of Red Deer to get the forest moving forward. Jevne said doors were knocked on and no one in the neighbourhood disagreed with the project. Jevne said the association is still looking for donations. Red Deer’s recreation facilities are top notch for all sports BY SEAN MCINTOSH ADVOCATE STAFF
T
here’s nothing like hitting the ice to play a game of hockey. And that’s coming from someone who skates like a deer trapped on a frozen pond. Whether it’s Servus Arena, the Collicutt Centre, the Kinsmen Community Arenas, the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, Kinex Arena, or even one of the outdoor rinks put in various communities every winter (one rink is even conveniently located outside my home), Red Deer has plenty of on-ice opportunities for hockey lovers. While I would like to blame the rinks’ quality of ice for my inability to skate consistently without falling on my rear end, I unfortunately cannot. The quality of the ice rivals the high quality of the facilities. The places I’ve lived before Red Deer didn’t have such solid places to play the game. With certain facilities being newer – the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre and Servus Arena – and the older rinks being impressively cared for, it’s hard to remember what it was like to play in some of the older, broken down facilities that I grew up with in Ontario.
Red Deer families should be excited by the quality of the city’s recreation facilities, and other cities should certainly be jealous. It isn’t just hockey though. The city offers a number of fantastic facilities you can visit to stay active. While I mainly use the Collicutt Centre for hockey, that doesn’t mean it’s all the facility has to offer. There’s an indoor swimming pool and water slide, an indoor field house and even a climbing wall. Over in the west side of town, people can enjoy the G.H. Dawe Community Centre. The facility features fitness classes, a gymnasium and a pool. The Michener Aquatic Centre, which features a six-lane, 25-metre indoor pool, sauna and a dryland workout arena, is another place Red Deerians can stay active. It’s no secret that Red Deer’s recreation facilities help make the city a sports destination – just look at the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Some of Canada’s best young athletes were using the finest facilities Red Deer has to offer during the event, which ran from Feb. 15 to March 3. The Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, which officially opened last August, was the home to a number of sporting events during the games, including thrill-
ing wheelchair basketball competitions. Shortly after the games, the facility hosted a national collegiate volleyball tournament. “Three years in the making, the $88-million Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre is the result of the work of so many. They should be proud of their contributions to a centre that will serve our students, our community and our region for generations to come,” Red Deer College president and CEO Joel Ward wrote in his Red Deer Advocate column shortly after the centre’s grand opening. Ward was certainly right about that. The impressive facility has just about everything someone could want from a recreational standpoint. A place to lift weights: check. A place to play basketball: check. A place to play hockey: check. The centre even has a place to play racquetball. I can’t say I’ve ever played the game, or even thought about playing it, but it’s exciting to have a place in the city to learn about a different sport. You can’t participate in new recreational activities if there’s no place to play. If only I could learn how to skate properly, I’d be set. Sean McIntosh is an Advocate reporter.

Driven by his ambition and his wife’s urging, Macbeth murders King Duncan and seizes the Scottish throne. But his conscience is plagued by guilt — especially as more murders must be committed to cement his power. The bloodbath that ensues pushes Macbeth and Lady Macbeth over the precipice of madness and death. While Shakespeare’s play was first performed in 1606, Prime Stock Theatre will be establishing an earlier setting for the tragedy that’s supposed to take place in the 11th century. Dealing with human traits such as ruthlessness and ambition and the psychic toll these can take, make Macbeth’s themes current, said Usher. “Macbeth is haunted by the choices he makes.” Victoria Wells-Smith, a former Prime Stock player, is flying in from Toronto to direct the play. The title role is performed by former Red Deer College student Layne Zazalak — while Usher will play McDuff. After all the gloom of Macbeth, The Tempest will seem positively breezy
— although it deals with both tragic and comic themes. It starts with a turbulent storm at sea that causes some nobles to wash up on a remote island. They discover the sorcerer Prospero, his daughter Miranda, and his two servants — the “monster” Caliban, and Ariel, an airy spirit. These colourful characters have helped audiences explore themes of magic, betrayal, revenge and family for more than four centuries. This Bard on Bower’s production will be directed by Benjamin Blyth. The English native is a founder of The Malachites‚ a company that strives to reconnect with the Elizabethan spirit of Shakespeare’s plays, while emphasizing their modern qualities. For the first time this summer, Bard on Bower will partner with staff at Cronquist House, who will be making picnic meals for any audience members who pre-order them. Usher also plans to book musicians to provide additional entertainment on the outdoor stage at Bower Ponds on various dates. Whether you catch the two fullscale outdoor plays at Bower Ponds, or one of the 45-minute Bard in a Box productions touring various city parks, Usher said Prime Stock theatre will be glad to add some cultural seasoning to your summer.

I
t’s difficult to really get to know a city until you have lived in it. Most people have a positive first impression of Red Deer. But what is it like to actually live here? Even better! Here are a few of Red Deer’s less obvious characteristics that made the community an amazing place for me to live for the past 20 years. A first impression might be that we have beautiful public spaces like parks, spray parks, playgrounds, trails, the river valley, green spaces, and great recreational use areas. When you live here, you notice the pride and care that city crews take in maintaining and improving them all year round. Grass is mowed, snow is cleared, trail cracks are fixed promptly, flowers are planted, equipment is fixed, debris is removed quickly, and garbage is collected frequently. You won’t see dilapidated equipment and crumbling trails. You will see the opposite – proudly maintained and frequently improved public spaces. The same pride shows in the city’s

and prompt in addressing concerns – sometimes with follow up service in the same day. We all take this for granted until we travel to another town or city and see the difference. For a city our size, the choice and quality of schools is second to none. We have public schools, Catholic schools, French and Spanish immersion schools, and francophone schools. Our schools have excellent programs ranging from fine arts to auto body, and chemistry to cosmetology. Students from Red Deer compete successfully on the world stage. Most importantly, our teachers are extremely dedicated, caring and qualified to foster every child’s success. In their eyes, every student matters. Everyone thinks the city is a “nice” size, but what does that mean? For me, it means less time in the car commuting to work, taking kids to school, sports and activities, shopping, errands and appointments. Most things are a 10- to 15-minute drive, or in many cases, a short bike ride or walk on our wonderful sidewalks and trails. In a large city, it isn’t uncommon to commute one hour each way to work – that’s about 40 hours per month for a five-day work week.
In Red Deer, your time commuting will be about one-quarter of that. Less time travelling is more time to enjoy doing the things that matter to you and your family. Part of why we spend less time commuting is that we have very wellplanned neighbourhoods that have amenities such as schools, recreation facilities, commercial areas, doctors and restaurants. The planning also puts a priority on green spaces like parks, play grounds, ponds and trails. Particularly along the river valley, at Heritage Ranch and Bower Ponds, you can escape into the wilderness for a walk, run or bike ride. Or, you can enjoy the Red Deer River on a tube or just sit on a bench near the banks watching birds and other wildlife. When you live here, the other thing you’ll notice is that Red Deer is full of big-hearted, community-minded, entrepreneurial, can-do people who are not afraid to work together for a common purpose. have been a student at Red Deer College for the past five years, and it could be argued that those five years have been the most exciting in Red Deer College history. During my time here, the college hosted the 2019 Canada Winter Games and the CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship, opened the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre, the Alternative Energy Lab, the first of four new residences and received university status after asking for 30 years. We are on the road to becoming Red Deer University. To say the least, Red Deer College has been busy. I am so grateful to be a student and be a part of the college community during such an exciting time. Red Deer College has given me many opportunities to grow personally and professionally. Joel Ward, the president and CEO, often says, “Our institution will continue to measure our success by who we let in, not who we keep out.” This institutional vision is important, because without it, students like myself would not have learning op-

school feeling discouraged and lost. Thankfully, Red Deer College was my first stop. After a few years of hard work, I had the honour of being awarded the 2018 Red Deer College Foundation outstanding student scholarship and the 2018 Students’ Association of Red Deer College student of the year award. For someone who thought I had very few options available to me, I am grateful Red Deer College has given me a place to grow and allowed me to become the person I always knew I could be. I am excited for the future of this institution as we continue to shape our identity as a university. I am excited for the continuance and enhancement of languages, as well as the launch of two new degrees, bachelor of education and bachelor of business administration.
From our business students to our apprenticeship students, Red Deer College is able to produce some of the most qualified and sought-after graduates in the province, and we will only continue to get stronger. Another important reason why Red Deer College should be everyone’s No. 1 choice of a post-secondary institution is our commitment to green initiatives. The college has 4,200 solar panels installed, making it the largest post-secondary solar array in Canada. This commitment to going green shows the college is serious about being a leader in the province and across the country. Another key component to Red Deer College’s success as an institution is the students. The Students’ Association of Red Deer College represents these students at institutional, municipal and provincial levels. The students’ association’s donation of half a million dollars to the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre shows past and present students’ investment in the future of Red Deer College. I have been honoured to be a part of the association for the past two years, first as a councillor, then as vice-president of community and wellness, and now as president. I encourage students to take advantage of the opportunities at Red Deer College, get involved in committees, join council, ask questions and be curious. Involvement and investment in our school will not only serve you today, but later in life. Choosing to attend Red Deer College has been the best decision of my life and choosing to get involved in my campus community is a close second. Winter or summer, Bower Ponds is fun in all seasons O
ne of the city’s main attractions, Bower Ponds offers a space the whole family can enjoy. Its beautiful trails connect attractions along the Red Deer River, like Heritage Ranch, Mckenzie Trails and Three Mile Bend. Besides the fun paddle boat rides and ice skating, Bower Ponds has some beautiful wildlife people can enjoy on their leisurely stroll, along with a playground for the kids to run around. Situated on Bower Ponds is the historically significant Cronquist House, the home of Emmanuel Petterson Cronquist and his family, who came to Alberta with the first wave of Swedish immigrants back in 1893. The pet-friendly park also has a pavilion with a small, rustic fireside room to escape from the cold in those winter months. Or, you can play some board games with your friends in the cafe. Plans for Canada Day? Bower Ponds has you covered with their annual celebration on the ampitheatre stage, along with other events that are hosted there, such as Shakespeare in the Park.
