Commodore's welcome Welcome to Nanaimo, B.C., the Jewel of the West, the Sun-Porch of Canada and the Bathtub Racing Capital of the World, for the 53rd Nanaimo Marine Festival and Great International World Championship Bathtub Race. I am humbled and honoured to again serve as Commodore of the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society. As many know, this has been an extremely difficult year for us with the passing of our longtime Commodore and mentor Bill McGuire. You will find more information on our plans to salute Bill in the pages to follow. This year, we salute the matriarch of the Bathtub Society, Margaret Johnson. Margaret and her family have worked tirelessly since the first race in 1967 to ensure the safety, camaraderie and execution of Marine Festival and Bathtub Weekend. Look for more on Margaret in the coming pages. All weekend, Maffeo Sutton will be filled with a number of great community organizations, vendors and food trucks for you to enjoy. A big thanks to WildPlay Elements Parks for bringing back the zipline. Fly over Sway’ A’ Lana Lagoon and check out the paddlewheel bathtub races. With help from Nanaimo Realty Royal
LePage, dignitaries, tubbers, sponsors, etc. will compete in retro paddlewheel bathtub races. Also in the lagoon this year, Bathtub Weekend welcomes Waters Edge RC. Bring the kids big and small to check out a number of exciting remote control challenge races and demonstrations. Thanks to Jerry and Sydney Hong/The Queen’s Hotel, Nissan of Nanaimo and Nanaimo Mitsubishi, Friday night’s concert features the iconic Canadian band Big Sugar and for the third year in a row, the tsunami that is Wise Youngblood takes the stage. We kick off Friday night with the to-be-announced winner of Queen’s ‘Open for Big Sugar Contest.’ All Saturday we are proud to bring you an entire day of free concerts. From the Joe Cocker Experience to Sirreal, you’ll find music for the whole family. More information is listed throughout the program. Saturday night wraps up with the amazing Quality Foods Festival of Lights. We are so fortunate to be able to partner with Quality Foods and present one of the biggest fireworks displays on Vancouver Island. this incredible show to our community. Sunday at 11 a.m. sharp is our signature event, the 53rd annual Great International World Championship Bathtub Race. Once again the tubbers will be challenging the Salish Sea from Nanaimo Harbour to Entrance Island, northwest towards Nanoose Bay and then the home stretch around Snake Island and back to Maffeo Sutton Park. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the board of directors and all the dedicated volunteers who work with the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society throughout the year to produce this iconic festival and event. You will find a list of all the support crews, sponsors and organizations involved on the supporters and sponsors page near the end of this program. Without this assistance we could not possibly put on a race of this magnitude as safely as we do each year. In closing, as our founder Frank Ney would say, “Ahoy you salty, scurvy bunch of landlubbers. We wish you happy bathtubbing over this great weekend. We hope your bathtubs don’t sink. Tubbing’s ‘mom’ to lead parade This year, we salute a woman affectionately referred to by our tubbers as ‘Mom,’ the matriarch of our society, Margaret Johnson. Margaret and her entire family have worked tirelessly since the first race in 1967 to ensure the safety, camaraderie and execution of Marine Festival and Bathtub Weekend.
Margaret’s dedication and enthusiasm have ensured the race and festival will continue in our community for years to come. Margaret’s husband George took part in the inaugural race to Vancouver, and they have taken part in racing and volunteering with the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society ever
since. Margaret began helping out at sanctioned races, and soon rose through the ranks as a director and went on to serve many years as ViceCommodore of the bathtub society. Margaret’s son Paul raced alongside George for many years, and daughter Wendy is still an active member of the bathtub society executive. In 2017, Margaret and Commodore Bill McGuire were honoured with the Michael Rhode Memorial Award for longtime dedication to their sport at the Nanaimo Sport Achievement Awards. This year we salute Margaret’s decades of service to the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society. She is being honoured as parade

can, please pick a flower from your own garden to display proudly as she passes by. All bouquets, flowers, etc. can then be placed at the finish line near the Frank Ney Statue where Margaret and her family will oversee the great race on Sunday morning.

Spirit of bathtub racing is found in a big tub In the spirit of all things bathtubbing, Nanaimo has laid claim to the World’s Largest Bathtub. There are actually two of these crafts that have made many appearances over the years, and are a common sight on the water during Bathtub Weekend.

Both big tubs were originally white with yellow trim, but in the 1990s when the Great Race finish line moved to Nanaimo, they were painted blue. This year, in memory of our past Commodore Bill McGuire, the Spirit of Nanaimo II will be renamed the SS Bill McGuire. There is also a plan to paint both big tubs back to their original white and yellow livery.

Bathtub circuit races keep tubbers sharp The sport of bathtub racing isn’t limited to the waters off Nanaimo – there’s a series of circuit races tubbers can enter to keep sharp. The first sanctioned race was held in 1979 after a request from the Kelowna Regatta to expand their water activities. The tubbers who had participated in the Great Race were invited to attend. The mandate of the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society is to publicize the sport of Bathtub racing so as to encourage more participants.
Races are held at various locations throughout British Columbia and Washington State. Races have taken place as far away as Sylvan Lake, Alberta. Presently, there are eight races in seven cities during the summer months, with the majority of these races circuit races, the entire circuits being visible for spectators. The Oak Bay Tea Party Race in Victoria has traditionally been our first race of the season and that was the case again this year on June 2.
A Nanaimo series stop was held on Canada Day at Departure Bay Beach during the Canada Day in the Bay celebration, followed by Lightning on the Lake at Port Alberni’s Sproat Lake this past weekend. Other stops include Kitsfest at Kitsilano Beach, Vancouver, on Aug. 10; Tsawassen on Aug. 11; Summerland, B.C., on Aug. 17, and then Bremerton, Wash., on Aug. 31-Sept. 1. In the past there have been as many as 13 races taking place in one year. Sanctioned racing can
be a family affair, with parents helping their children and other members of the family working as pit crew or helping to organize the race. It is an opportunity to learn to repair motors and fibreglass tubs. It is also a time for families
and teams to socialize with each other and to share experiences and knowledge. Santioned racing has its rewards too. The Tubbers race for points and at the end of the season the winners in each class are presented with World Championship trophies.
