Summer Fun
R
aising two energetic boys, I’ve learned the best way to keep everyone happy (and not fighting) over summer vacation is to get them outside and doing something active. Whether it’s beachcombing, kayaking along the shoreline or walking to the Oak Bay Marina to look at the boats, everyone always ends up having a good time. The long days also mean there’s more time to explore so we decided to take the summer fun on the road. Admittedly, when we first decided to do this three summers ago, I wouldn’t have called myself a road trip fan. But as we drove down the Washington and Oregon coasts — highlights included skimboarding and driving on the beach in Ocean Shores, exploring Cannon Beach and its
famous Haystack Rock, sliding down waterslides that came out of a decommissioned 747 jumbo jet, and riding the massive sand dunes in Florence — I quickly became a road trip convert. If we saw something that looked fun, we would stop and explore. “Mom, look at that! Can we pull over?” became a common refrain. And my answer was always, “Sure, why not?” Why not, indeed! We had no set itinerary, no hotels booked beyond the first night, and just a general plan of things we’d like to do. How long we stayed in each spot depended on how much fun we were having. The car conversations, often filled with laughter, were also a big bonus. In this issue of Tweed, I write about our last road trip — an epic ‘Best of
the West’ trip that took us to nine states and eight national parks. Food writer Joseph Blake takes us on a culinary adventure to his favourite spots to nosh, and we show you how to brighten up your kitchen —and your wardrobe —with bold punches of colour for some extra summer sizzle. The fortnightly outdoor concerts, hosted by Oak Bay Parks, Recreation and Culture, begin the weekend before Canada Day and run until the end of August. Painted Pianos If you’re out for a walk or a bike ride, don’t be surprised if you hear piano music along the water, in local parks, and even in Oak Bay Village this summer. The painted piano program is back and people are invited to tickle the ivories and make music during the day. Decorated by local artists, the pianos are placed in key spots around Oak Bay in July and remain out until September. Anybody can play the pianos from 10 a.m. to dusk daily. Art Extravaganza Celebrating its 15th year, the Bowker Creek Brush Up Show and Sale sees artists from the Oak Bay Community Artists Society and other guests demonstrate how they create their art. There’s no admission fee for the fun event, which runs along beautiful Bowker Creek between Hampshire Road and Oak Bay High. “We wanted to maintain that family home feel but still incorporate the modern features we needed,”
When Allison Fowler and her family decided the time had come to rebuild their Uplands home on Beach Drive, they knew they wanted to do it right. “We were lucky because we’d lived on the property in the original home for about three years so we knew where the light was, where we wanted the kitchen and patio area to face — all those important details,” explains Allison, standing in the bright, airy front room of the luxury, modern West Coast home. The family — Allison, her husband, their two teenage daughters and their two dogs — moved to Victoria from Calgary in 2007 for a business opportunity. They bought the Uplands property, which at the time had an older bungalow on it, in 2010. “What originally attracted us to the property was the big backyard and the fact that it’s a sheltered piece of land but still close to the water,” Allison says of the large, three-quarter acre corner lot which sits across the road from the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. When it came time to consider designing and building the home, the family shopped around for a contractor. “We met with a few different people, but as soon as we met with Tim Agar from Horizon Contracting we knew he was the right one for the job,” Allison explains. “His personality was easygoing, we were comfortable with him, and he made us feel confident about our choices.” Allison oversaw every aspect of the design and build and one of the most important considerations for her and her family was building a home that they could grow into.

“We designed it so that the girls’ rooms and our room are quite separate — someWe wanted to thing that’s important with teenagers and also because I maintain that want them to stay as long as family home possible,” she laughs. They also knew they feel but still wanted the home to feel like incorporate the just that — a home. “We wanted to maintain modern features that family home feel but we needed still incorporate the modern features we needed,” Allison says. The ‘family feel’ of the home is obvious as soon as you walk in — bright, custom artwork is featured on the walls alongside family photos, a comfortable family room with a wood-burning fireplace sets the stage for cozy nights in watching television, and a big, open kitchen screams Sunday night family dinners. The modern aspects are what make the home really interesting — a large, wall-set saltwater fish tank greets guests as soon as they walk through the front door. “At first I had thought to do a wine wall there, but as we got into the build I started toying with the idea of the fish tank,” explains Allison, adding she worked with Out of the Blue Creations to come up with the perfect look for what’s

here are sure signs of summer in Oak Bay, when a pair of white trousers is de rigueur. Some of us may have worn whites to play cricket but in Oak Bay, a pair is a requirement for the opening of the lawn bowling season and also the opening of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club along with the Sailpast. Other signs that summer is just around the corner are the return of the Western Purple Martin, the Kiwanis Tea Room cooking up delicious French fries, and the annual line painting on our roads. But for Oak Bay’s Centennial, swinging into summer took on a whole new meaning. In 2006, the Oak Bay Centennial Committee was looking for a summer event for all ages that would bring everyone together. They decided on a dance on the Avenue. This beautifully tied in with the Old Tango Club (above Starbucks) and a fundraiser that had been held at the Penny Farthing the year before and had been aptly named ‘The Last Tango in Oak Bay’. That event had raised $35,000 in one night and the proceeds went to two Centennial projects — the village clock and the Windsor Pavilion. John Herbert, Bill Murphy Dyson, Sandi Piercy and the committee set about planning it. The Business Improvement Association agreed to underwrite the costs and July 29th was set as the date. Even though some of the committee felt that

they were great dancers and could strut their stuff, it was agreed that we needed someone professional to lead the dancing. We asked John de Pfeiffer to help us and that was a master stroke as John has a wonderful newsletter, which he sends far and wide, with enthusiastic readers. So when the dance began, we had 100 instructors to help people learn the steps and act as partners. The Farmers’ Almanac said that the evening would be without rain, but we held our breath as the day approached. The yellow line down the middle of the street was repainted. The Belvedere Broadcasters set up their big band at the corner of Hampshire and the Avenue and 2,000 people arrived! John De Pfeiffer was suitably attired. With a microphone attached to his T-shirt, he was able to call out the dance moves. It was a pirate T-shirt with the words: Oak Bay 1906-2006…100 years scurvyfree! The evening went off without a hitch and everyone danced under the stars until their legs gave out on the asphalt. So what do you think, should we do it again? Let’s get swinging on a 2020 summer dance that ties in with the Bowker Creek Brush Up, the Blethering Car Show and the Arts and Culture Fortnight. John de Pfeiffer has promised me he will be there and I’m told he still has that pirate T-shirt.

A food writer takes us to five Foodie finds in Oak Bay

very month for the last few years when my old kayak partner comes down from his Cobble Hill farm for a visit, we’ve eaten lunch at dozens of local bistros. We’ve grazed the food scene and eaten at places when they’ve just opened their business or expanded, renovated, or changed chefs. I’ve also written about local restaurants for two decades and these are my five favourite lunch spots in Oak Bay.
Charelli’s Cheese Shop & Delicatessen
is one of my favourite places in Oak Bay. I’d visit the tiny, overflowing, European-style Charelli’s just for the rich, cheese aroma of the shop — let alone the great customer service, delicious samples, and mouth-watering sandwiches. Monthly cheese-tasting on Saturday afternoons are linked to the store’s Cheese of the Month Club offerings. But it doesn’t stop there. Wine tasting events after hours (hosted by sommelier Ernest Sargent) and what staff and regulars call the best breakfast sandwich in town (I agree!) have also been bringing the faithful to Charelli’s since 2003. Some minor expansions mean there’s a take-out kitchen serving up soup and sandwiches Friday through Sunday

from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and more delicious sandwiches Tuesday through Thursday served from 10 a.m. until they run out of fresh baguette. Up to five people work the store’s narrow confines and counter on the weekend and they are smart and passionate about food. Cheese, smoked and cured meat, condiments, sauces, specialized hardware, books and even bartending supplies — this Foodie find has it all.

Both my kayak partner and I love Japanese food, so Bon Sushi is one of our go-to lunch spots in Oak Bay. I almost always choose the sashimi bento with salmon, tuna and other raw fish, dynamite roll, seaweed salad and miso soup. We’ve also tried Bon Sushi’s udon bento with beef or chicken teriyaki, and tempura bento. All are delicious but I always go back to my favourite bento box. The little restaurant’s tiny kitchen also turns out excellent Agedashi tofu, various noodle dishes, and an array of delicious, special fusion rolls like the dragon roll, crunch roll and the spicy TNT roll. Chef Jun Shinn is the son of the owner who bought the restaurant seven years ago. In early spring, Bon Sushi underwent a minor renovation with new, darker gray walls that warm the bright space featuring cool jazz background music. Small tables on the patio overlooking Hampshire Road, Athlone Court and Oak Bay Village are just another plus for this thriving, 28-seat, family-oriented business.

Jay and Quinn Forsythe renovated and reopened Windsor Cafe a little over a year ago after managing Lemongrass, Jay’s family’s Cadboro Bay restaurant. The young couple has figured out that the 1934-built space, with Quinn’s father’s paintings on the wall and big windows looking out on Windsor Park, is best suited as a breakfast-lunch spot. No more dinners. Salvaged, scorched Cedar milled into benches, tables, the bar and signage warm a bright, light trio of rooms on three floors. I often eat on the patio and I was happy to see prawn scampi and chorizo mussels still on the new, spring-summer menu when I revisited the cafe in April. I look forward to trying a couple of new menu items, including Madeira rigatoni, cavatappi pasta and smoked gruyere cheese. With draft Hoyne Dark Matter, Phillips Blue Buck, mimosas, Caesars and VQA house reds and whites, Windsor Cafe is the perfect place for a drink and a nosh or just a coffee and pastry.

Head baker Cam McCaw has been at Ottavio for a decade and he makes the best croissants in town but this hot spot might be most famous for its cheese. “Our focus is cheese,” says general manager Genevieve LaPlante, listing special events like the ‘The Big Cheese Cut’, ‘Festa Italiano’ and last year’s ‘Saturday in France’. “In early fall we’re planning a Blue Cheese Festival with samples from some of the 20 kinds of blue cheese we carry.” I love Ottavio’s Italian-style Illy Coffee, their panini sandwiches, and local-sourced fresh salads and soups. The menu offers a healthy lunch rationale for a dessert cone of Ottavio’s in-house, Italian-style gelato made with organic milk and local fruit and berries. Where were you born and who is your family?
I was born in Pinawa, Manitoba, where my family worked at Atomic Energy of Canada. My grandparents had a hobby farm with lots of veggies, so we would always pick peas and cherry tomatoes and that sparked my connection to the land and how food is grown. At a young age, I also had the opportunity to experience a restaurant kitchen where my uncle worked. I remember being fascinated by the appliances and the cooking process — it all immediately piqued my interest. My wife, Marjorie, and I have two daughters. Charlotte is six and Madelyn is three.
How long have you worked in Oak Bay?
I’ve worked at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel for close to four years now.
My wife wanted to move to the Island as it was her dream to always live here. We found this opportunity and we took it.
What do you love about being a chef?
I love to make people happy with food. I love the intimacy in dinner party settings, and the experiences I can make with food. I also love to lead a team and to teach and mentor young people. Who wouldn’t love to just cook all day? I love to exercise my creativity — to think of an idea or see something and try it out for myself. I love being able to eat at lots of different restaurants and taste the flavours of the world.
What do you love about Oak Bay? As a hobby woodworker, I can’t help but love the Garry Oaks. The proximity to the ocean in Oak Bay and the views of Mount Baker are
absolutely breathtaking. I love that Oak Bay has its own climate, separate from the downtown core. Driving to work along the ocean, I will always take the scenic route as the ocean calms me and gives me inspiration.
What are your other hobbies?
I love creating things, doing projects and being handy. I love travelling and I’m fortunate enough to have visited areas in the world with amazingly different cuisine such as Ireland, France, Germany, the Seychelles, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong — all with their own specific flavours and culture.
What brings you joy?
My family brings me joy. New, exciting ingredients and the opportunity to create, as well as the joy my food brings to others.

o over the top this summer with rich colour, texture and prints — accessorizing to the max and letting loose your inner diva. “I just love life and live life to the fullest!” says realtor and Oak Bay resident Shaunna Jones. Shaunna’s joie de vivre is inspiring and definitely contagious. Originally from Prince Rupert, she’s a small town girl at heart so loves that Oak Bay has that same smalltown feeling. “I love the beauty, the quaintness and how wonderful the people are,” says Shaunna, who also loves being a realtor. “I love being busy and productive as it gives me a great sense of accomplishment each and every day. I love
helping my clients sell and buy their perfect homes. It gives me a lot of pride.” When it comes to style, Shaunna says: “I think style really tells a lot about a person. As a real estate agent, I feel it’s very important to dress for success. Even growing up in Prince Rupert, I was always overdressed and still am. I love being classy and elegant but I also love to be casual and comfortable.” As a mother of three grown daughters, Shaunna also likes to keep busy outside of work. “I love working out, running and power walking along the beaches and yoga,” she says. “I absolutely love spending quality time with my kids, family and friends.” SUMMER 2019 TWEED

ith charming country lanes, English hedgerows and the ivy-covered remains of stone walls from grand estates, Oak Bay retains the glowing elegance of yesteryear. In summertime, it is at its best with many small parks and natural public areas available for curious walkers to explore. The short fourkilometre walk from the Victoria Golf Club to Gonzales Hill Observatory and the Chinese Cemetery links park, trail and beach with scenic points of interest. It’s all along a path that includes stately homes and gardens in colourful bloom — points of great pride for local residents. Begin this summer stroll at the Victoria Golf Club, where its century-old clubhouse anchors a seaside panorama that has remained unchanged for decades. The club entrance gates
are the perfect starting point for a leisurely walk into Oak Bay’s history. First opened in 1893, the club is the oldest 18hole golf course in Canada still in its original location. Its founding dates to a time when Oak Bay was modeled after the famous seaside resort towns of England with parks, terraces, and Tudor-style homes all built to complete the concept. The area was once connected by a streetcar, shuttling visitors for a day of leisure at Oak Bay’s beaches. Beach Drive divides the course, meandering past some of our community’s most historic mansions, including 1069 Beach Drive — the former long-time home of the Ross family, owners of the world-famous Butchart Gardens. Continue up to Newport Avenue, which is named after Newport Beach, Long Island. It’s one of a number of Oak SUMMER 2019 TWEED

Bay street names honouring famous resort destinations. Turn left on Island Road to reach the entrance to Anderson Hill Park (also known as Blueberry Hill) — a rocky, natural area of open spaces, Garry Oak trees, and native shrubs and plants. With expansive vistas overlooking the Trial Islands, many rock formations are useful as natural benches to relax and enjoy the spectacular view. It’s the perfect place for a picnic — a scenic, undisturbed natural ecosystem in the middle of a heritage residential area. A cairn at the top of the hill informs visitors that the park was used in time past by the Songhees people as a lookout spot for boats and animals, with the surroundings lands and sea used for gathering food such as salmon and camas bulbs. The park was named after the pioneering Anderson family, whose 19th century patriarch, Alexander Caulfield Anderson, was Victoria’s first postmaster and collector of customs as well as a distinguished Hudson’s Bay Company employee. From Anderson Hill, continue along Island Road and take Transit back to Beach Drive, which winds along the scenic path of McNeill Bay (formerly Shoal Bay) — a waterfront drive that’s a must-see for visitors to the region. At the far end of McNeill Bay, high up on the bluffs overlooking the water, Walbran Park is home to the gleaming white Gonzales Hill Observatory, constructed in 1914. It served for decades as the western headquarters of the Dominion Meteorological Service. There’s a path to the top at the corner of Beach Drive and Sunny Lane. Vehicle access
Anderson Hill Park
is available on Denison Road, named in honour of Francis Napier Denison, the first head of the observatory who lived next door and was known for decades as Victoria’s beloved ‘weatherman’. Its highest point is 66-metres above sea level and the park still features the remnants of a wartime lookout used to spot enemy submarines. The main observatory building, although now closed to the public, retains a dignified and timeless presence on the hill and can be seen for miles. Take the pedestrian steps down to Barkley Terrace (formerly Highland Drive) and continue along King George Terrace to Trafalgar Park. The terrace is named for Captain Charles W. Barkley, an English sea captain and fur trader. The small park and lookout area has parking and is the perfect spot to snap a scenic photo of the bay below.

Gonzales Hill Observatory
From here, it’s a short walk down the rocky cliffs to Maquinna Street, named after the famous and powerful Nootka Chief of the late 1700s, and to the Chinese cemetery at Harling Point. Here, simple grave markers and an altar are arranged according to the spiritual practice of feng shui to provide alignment with nature. The first burial took place in 1903, when the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association bought land at the site for that purpose as laws and attitudes of the time prevented burial elsewhere. According to Chinese tradition, remains of overseas Chinese must be cleaned and returned to China after seven years. This practice ceased here in 1937 when the SinoJapanese war broke out. Many years later, the remains of 900 people once held in a ‘bone house’ on site were added to the 400 named graves in a mass burial. A final internment ceremony was held in 1961. Harling Point was named in 1934 in honour of local resident Fred Harling, who died after dramatically rescuing strangers from a capsized boat. In 1996, the cemetery was recognized as a National Heritage Site by the federal govern-

WildADVENTURE West An epic summer road trip By Tess van Straaten

’m standing on the rim of a volcano that exploded 7,000 years ago, in awe of the sheer beauty of the pristine lake that’s formed below, when my son asks if we can hike down to the crater. It’s day two of our Wild West summer road trip and we’re at Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. It’s already well over 30 Celsius and the kids want to cool off by jumping into the crater, which is the deepest lake in the United States. “How many people can say they jumped into a volcano?” my son, Tyler, asks. It’s just one of the many unforgettable memories we’ll make on our two-week ‘best of the west’ odyssey across nine states that took us to eight national parks and must-see places like Lake Tahoe, Sedona and Park City. It all started with a plan to visit our friends, Mike and Lesley, in Arizona. I was worried it might be too far to drive on my own with the kids but Mike said he’d map out a route to

With our bikes on the back of the car and our little dog, Bella, in tow, we boarded the Coho and drove to Portland the first day, where we biked along the beautiful Willamette River path and explored the city before driving along the Columbia River Gorge just before sunset. Heading south from Portland, we ventured further inland through the gorgeous Willemette Forest to Crater Lake. After driving around the lake and stopping at all the breathtaking viewpoints, we climbed down the steep switchbacks to the basin of the crater. Jumping off the rocks into the cold water, the kids couldn’t believe they were swimming in a volcano. The hike back up the almost two-kilometre route is so steep in the high altitude, the National Park Service says

it’s like climbing up 65 flights of stairs. But it was so worth it! Day three took us to California, where crews were battling wildfires, and then Nevada and Lake Tahoe. We stopped at stunning beaches on both the Nevada side (Zephyr Cove was my son, Tate’s, favourite) and the California end (South Tahoe), where we stayed overnight. We’d planned to head to Yosemite first thing in the morning but the kids liked Tahoe so much, we had to go for another swim and boat ride in the morning. Our trip then veered wildly off course because ‘avoid traffic’ was accidentally put in the GPS (Tyler blames Bella). Instead of taking the interstate to Yosemite, we drove along a glorified goat trail called Highway 4. It was so narrow, there was no centre line and navigating the steep incline of switchbacks to the 10,000-foot elevation was terrifying! At the top, we discovered picture-perfect but eerie Mosquito Lake with its deserted cabins. After driving down the other side of the mountain and looping through valleys, we finally arrived at Yosemite National Park to see stunning views of El Captain and the Half Dome before the sun set. pizza another visitor generously handed out, we sat in silence as the sun fell behind the massive granite dome. We camped overnight and got up early to ‘climb’ (okay, run up as far as we could) some of the smaller domes before a beautiful drive to the picturesque ski village of Mammoth en route to Death Valley National Park, where it was already 50 Celsius at 11 a.m. Tate, Tess & Bella in Death Valley We walked out onto the scorching hot sand dunes for a quick photo, heeding the ‘extreme heat’ warning signs, before crossing back into Nevada. It was so hot when we arrived in Las Vegas, our ice cream melted as soon as we walked out of the store and we decided to drive the Vegas strip instead of walking it. Our next stop was Lake Mead and a visit to the Hoover Dam, a true marvel

Crossing into Arizona, we drove through thunderstorms, torrential rain and flash flood warnings in nearby areas before arriving in beautiful Prescott, where a much-needed gin and tonic was waiting for me at Mike and Lesley’s. The next day, we explored the city’s historic downtown and biked around Lynx Lake in the leafy Prescott National Forest. With Prescott as our base, we took a day trip to Sedona,

world-famous for its red rock and mystical vortexes. Hiking and biking through the incredible sandstone formations in the desert was absolutely breathtaking. Even more breathtaking was our daytrip to the Grand Canyon. Arriving early, we took in the views from Mather Point before jumping on the shuttle to nearby Yaki Point. Venturing down the South Kaibab Trail, we hiked partway into the canyon to Ooh Aah Point (reaching the bottom is a multi-day trip and not advised on this trial in summer due to the heat and lack of water). Returning to the visitor centre, we walked along the Rim Trail and then biked along the rim of the Grand Canyon all the way to Hermit’s Rest, the most western point on the South Rim, to ring the bell. It was magical. For the trip home, Mike mapped a route through Utah that took us to Zion National Park, stunning Bryce Canyon National Park — famous for geological structures called hoodoos — and the beautiful ski town of Park City. Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park was next, and then Yellowstone National Park, where we passed the continental divide and walked along boardwalks to watch the bubbling hot springs and gushing geysers, including Old Faithful, put on a show. Driving home through the big sky of Montana and then Idaho and lovely lakefront Coeur D’Alene near the Washington State border, we racked up more than 7,000 kilometres on our epic Wild West adventure and most importantly, we made memories we’ll never forget.
