PUBLISHER’S LETTER + WOR DS BY LISA CRAIK
new chapters
T
his June, my youngest son graduated from high school in Maple Ridge, and it brought a mixed bag of emotions: excitement, joy, pride, melancholy, sadness, apprehension — truly a metaphor in the making. As I sat in the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, overlooking a sea of people, the sight of students dressed in cap and gown was inspiring to say the least. Their hard work at school has led to the completion of one goal and the start of others; and I realized endings are just beginnings of new chapters. I attended my son’s commencement address along with hundreds of other proud parents. We laughed, we cried and we cheered — oh boy, did we cheer on our graduates. We wanted them to know how much we love and appreciate them. Families showed up in a big way — one even had cowbells. The theatre was jam-packed with people celebrating their kids taking that first step into young adulthood. Cameras flashed, videos hummed. The evening also had a serious tone to it as discussion centred on the state of the planet — which our youth will inherit — and what might inspire them to take action and make a difference. The difference doesn’t have to be at the Nobel Prize level — every little bit helps, and this group of inspiring youth cheered on the possibility of being the ones to make that difference. This is one reason that I am delighted to be a part of this magazine. By showcasing the unique aspects of our communities in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, we hope to inspire readers to take better care of our small part of this beautiful corner of the world. We have the benefit of mountains, lakes, rivers and streams, nearby oceans and a multitude of things to do in one of the best cities in the world. However, we need be serious about our responsibility to care for our planet. We must support our local businesses and farmers, those who are trying to keep trucking costs, gas costs, emissions and other environmental impacts lower by supporting local. If we don’t, the things that brought us all to this beautiful place will erode. So pick up garbage when you see it on a trail, and don’t dump your mattresses by Kanaka Creek — every little bit helps.

SUMMER 2019
This brings me to the Circle Farm Tour — featured in this edition — with its plethora of tastes and treats to be enjoyed by anyone who chooses to make a difference. The farm to-table concept embodies a social movement to promote serving local food at restaurants and purchasing products direct from the producer — be it a winery, ranch, or brewery. On the tour, savour everything from Blue Heron Winery’s mouthwatering wine to fresh produces and meat at Hopcott Farms. Top it off with a wonderful meal at Kingfishers Pub, overlooking the Fraser River, and you will have a day to remember. The farm-to-table movement goes hand-in-hand with caring for the body in a more holistic way. This is highlighted by the inspiring story of Jen Hamilton, owner and entrepreneur of Oxygen Yoga & Fitness, which uses LED technology for hot yoga. Those who attend Oxygen Yoga classes are quickly converted to this centuries-old practice of self-care — physically, mentally and emotionally. Sometimes when life becomes hectic, I take a few moments and peruse Pinterest and my dream home — a modern farmhouse. This architectural style is gaining in popularity because it speaks to a simpler time when people sat on porches, sipped lemonade and talked. Simplicity and open planning allow for breathability in a modern farmhouse design, and Chloe and Chris Sheppard, owners of this edition’s feature home, have embodied these concepts. We are so happy to share the journey the “flipping Sheppards” have taken (they like to flip homes, so their Instagram name is very fitting!). Chatting with Laura Butler, executive director of the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation (for our Walk With feature), it was interesting to see how the local hospital is attempting to lessen its carbon footprint and increase positive outcomes for patients. It’s another example of an entity wanting to do its part in improving the environment around us. So as time moves on, sometimes quicker than we’d like, we hope you’ll take the time to read about local residents making a difference. Perhaps you’ll be inspired to take on something — no matter how big or small — to improve this place we are fortunate to call home and, in doing so, the planet we are leaving to our youth.

TALK WORDY TO ME
+ WORDS BY RONDA PAYNE
Keeping the pages turning Local booksellers offer old and new reading delights in a diverse range of fiction and non-fiction offerings.
S
ome people are firmly in the fiction camp when it comes to book selections, while others demand a nonfiction fix. Readers can have their fair share of both with new and old offerings available at these Ridge- and Meadows-based booksellers. Anyone looking for meaningful fiction, non-fiction or a bit of both may find a whole new bookshelf of options by checking out these recommendations.
Non-fiction
While Maya Thorarinson from Bean Around Books wasn’t much of a reader prior to working at the local bookstore and coffee shop, she’s embraced Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert, whose name many will recognize from her huge hit Eat, Pray, Love. “I’ve been reading a lot more,” Thorarinson says. “It comes from being surrounded by an 10
SUMMER 2019
awesome collection of books.” When asked about Big Magic, which was published in 2015, she notes it hits home on a range of fronts. “I’ve kind of got other hobbies,” says Thorarinson. “And Big Magic is all about creativity and stuff like that. I like that [Gilbert] writes each book for herself and if that happens to benefit you, then fantastic. She shows you how to work more creatively and not take things so seriously. Anyone could read it and enjoy it.” Thorarinson hasn’t read Eat, Pray Love, but after reading Big Magic she thinks she will soon. Also in the realm of non-fiction is a diverse selection of travel books that are always a big hit at Ken’s Bookcase. Owner Ken Carlson says he sees a lot of people in the 50-plus age range
picking up travel books — even if the editions are a few years old. “There’s a certain amount of people who gravitate to Mexico this time of year and Belize, or just about any of the Latin American countries,” he says. “I’ve got one shelf with probably a dozen books on it with Mexico, Greece, Thailand.” The books discuss the countries and various regions within them and provide important tips and tricks to travelling there. They also detail ways to find more information to address specific questions or concerns. While there is a focus on hotels that may have changed since publication, the majority of those hotels will still be in place and the basic travel information is still accurate.
Fiction
In Pitt Meadows, Sue Dawson of Tomes and Tales is generally a historical fiction reader and was drawn to The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. It’s a story set in France during World War II about two sisters who are challenged by the new lives they are forced to live. “It’s an amazing book of survival and resilience and struggle and sacrifice,” Dawson says. “It’s changed my life forever and I will never forget that book.” Although historical fiction isn’t everyone's preferred genre, Dawson feels it's worth a read. “It’s the first book I’ve read in my entire life that made me cry like a baby,” she says. Another work of fiction, written by Canadian writer Kelley Armstrong, is City of the Lost, recommended by Marilyn Mitchell at Black
Bond Books. This is the first in Armstrong’s series about a detective who runs to a remote “off-the-grid” town in northern Canada to escape her past. “I kind of like the fact that it’s a hidden village in the north where people flee for various reasons,” Mitchell says. “Kelley Armstrong does very well portraying her characters. You can picture what they look like.” City of the Lost is the first book in the Rockton series, the fifth book is expected out in 2020. “I recommend it to everyone that comes in the store,” she says. “They all read different genres and they all like it.” Readers can find something to inspire them or escape with, whether truth or fiction, with these recommended reads from local book experts.

May your life be as vibrant as the foods you eat! After growing up in Winnipeg, Jesse Jenner attended the Culinary Institute of Canada on Prince Edward Island, studying culinary arts and an applied degree in operations, before finally settling in Maple Ridge. All of this travelling, coupled with his passion for farm-to-table scratch cooking, has helped develop his understanding of regional Canadian cuisine, which he is currently exploring at Humble Roots Cafe. When he's not at the cafe cooking, he might be found doing a food demonstration at the Haney Farmers Market or exploring the beautiful trails and beaches of Golden Ears National Park.

Panna Cotta
Panna Cotta Ingredients: Makes about 4 servings 7 oz (200 ml) milk 7 oz (200 ml) whipping cream 1/2 Tbsp (5 g) gelatin powder 1/4 cup sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract Strawberry Sauce 1 pound (450 g) fresh strawberries (local varieties are in season!) 2 Tbsp water 1/3 cup (70g) sugar
12
SUMMER 2019
Method: Dissolve gelatin in 2 Tbsp cold water and let it swell for 5 to 10 minutes. In a medium saucepan bring the cream, milk and sugar to a simmer over medium-low heat (do not boil). When sugar has dissolved, remove from heat and add vanilla extract. Let cool for 5 minutes before adding the gelatin. Add gelatin to the milk mixture and stir until it has completely dissolved. Pour it in the serving glasses (I've used 5-oz (150-ml) capacity glasses) or ramekins and refrigerate until it sets, for about 4 hours or — better — overnight.
To prepare the sauce, wash the strawberries, drain well and remove leaves. Cut strawberries in quarters. In a small saucepan combine the strawberries, sugar and water. Bring to a simmer and remove from heat immediately. Pour into the bowl of a blender or food processor and blend the mixture to make a smooth sauce. Pass through a strainer to remove the seeds. Cover and let cool to room temperature, and then refrigerate until ready to serve. When ready to serve, pour the strawberry sauce over the panna cotta and enjoy.
There are a plethora of amazing foods to choose from living on Canada's West Coast, but after recently attending the Grow Food Symposium at the University of Abbotsford and listening to a lecture on sustainable seafood by Chef Ned Bell, I've realized the importance of our relationship with salmon. This fish is the lifeblood of our river systems and if we don't radically change our methods of consumption, we could face the reality of depleted stocks within decades. Therefore, we are proud to say we support Ocean Wise sustainable seafood products at Humble Roots Cafe, as just one small way to help contribute meaningfully.

We've chosen to use a simple glaze of tamari and honey to allow the salmon's natural flavours to shine through, while at the same time paying homage to the early settlers of the region. To accompany it, we've chosen a classic rice pilaf, a staple in French cooking.
Salmon Dish Ingredients: 1 cup rice 2 cups water 1/4 cup mirepoix (onions, celery and bell peppers) 1 7-oz portion of wild salmon 1/4 cup mushrooms 1 carrot 1 zucchini 50 ml honey 50 ml tamari 3 Tbsp herb mix of tarragon/dill/parsley/oregano Method: Place a pot on medium heat with 1 fluid oz of oil and add the mirepoix. SautĂŠ until the onions are translucent. Add the rice and stir for 10 seconds. Then add the water and bring to a boil. Cover, reduce to low heat and simmer for 45 minutes. Turn the heat off and leave covered for 10 minutes before using a fork to fluff. While rice is cooking on low heat, add tamari and honey to a small pan and bring to a simmer. Remove. Bring a small pot of water to a boil and add carrots to cook for 4 to 7 minutes until fork-tender. Place a pan on high heat and cook mushrooms with 1 oz of oil until tender, adding salt and pepper to taste. Cut zucchini into disks and place on the griddle or hot pan to sear until tender. Put honey-tamari glaze on salmon and place presentation side down in a pan on medium high heat. When sides of salmon begin to look white, flip and cook 4 more minutes until medium well. Presentation: Mix mushrooms with rice and place on left side of plate. Arrange vegetables in the top right corner of the plate. Place the salmon from the middle of the rice to the bottom right of the plate and garnish with herbs.

WALK WITH LAURA BUTLER Bijou publisher Lisa Craik sits down with Laura Butler, Executive Director of Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation. 14
+ PHOTOS BY COLLEEN FLANAGAN
SUMMER 2019
WE ALL HAVE A CONNECTION TO RIDGE MEADOWS HOSPITAL AND MY JOB IS TO PROVIDE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EACH OF OUR DONORS TO HAVE THE MOST IMPACT FROM THEIR GIFT.
Have you always resided in the Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows community?
I was born in Langley but grew up and graduated in North Vancouver. We started our family in Coquitlam and moved to Maple Ridge when our youngest was just a baby—25 years ago. We’ve seen a lot of changes!
You’re known for your involvement in the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation, but what has been your career path?
I studied Early Childhood Education in college, and was a preschool teacher for a number of years before starting my family. I was lucky to be a stay-at-home mom when my kids were small and returned to work as a medical office assistant for a local doctor. I was then hired as a secretary for the out-patient psychiatry program at Ridge Meadows Hospital, and eventually found my way in 2005 to Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation in the assistant role at the front desk. I’ve worked hard through several different roles at RMHF, and have been the executive director for two years.
Why is the foundation important to our communities?
I’m passionate about the work I do because this is my hospital too — it’s been there when my family has needed help. We’ve said goodbyes, we’ve welcomed new additions, we’ve had surgery and diagnoses and testing, and know that we will again in the future. We all have a connection to Ridge Meadows Hospital and my job is to provide an opportunity for each of our donors to have the most impact from their gift. The foundation helps to ensure that our hospital has what it needs to look after all of us: our family, friends and neighbours.
What are you most excited about for the foundation this upcoming year?
I’m so excited to be sharing the message that not all healthcare happens at the hospital, and not all healthcare has equipment attached to it. For example, mental health and senior health doesn’t have specific equipment the way the OR or ICU has, but they are still an important part of healthcare. While fundraising for essential equipment for our hospital will always be a priority for our donors, we’re also proud to be supporting other high-priority healthcare needs both in our hospital and in our community.
SUMMER 2019 15
Who do you admire and why?
I admire volunteers. Our community is so fortunate to have some of the most dedicated community ambassadors I have ever seen. Filling a need, making things happen, supporting a cause, or an event… I truly admire Jan Hickman, recently named as Citizen of the Year by the Maple Ridge Community Foundation. She said that “volunteering is like voting — every time you volunteer, you are telling the community what is important to you” and I truly believe this. Jan has made a tremendous impact in this community with her volunteerism. I applaud, admire and am so grateful for her dedication to our community.
What brings you joy?
I have a list! Simple pleasures like laughing every day, our beautiful mountains and surroundings, active days and quiet reflection, the joy of finding another sidewalk poem, a new exhibit at the art gallery, a good joke shared with a friend and, of course, a potluck (truly one of my favourite things)!
Anything else you’d like us to know?
I am most grateful to raise my family in this community. There’s not a single thing we would have changed. It’s an absolute delight to see the adults they have become, and to know that they have strong roots, good values, kind and caring hearts, and even though they live in other places now, they still call Maple Ridge home.

Chris and Chloe Sheppard dream of bringing their farmhouse designs to others
A
nyone who watches HGTV knows there’s good business to be had for couples who flip homes together. And while Maple Ridge’s Chris and Chloe Sheppard have found this to be true, they’ve also created their “to keep” home and now hope to spread the love, sharing their authentic farmhouse design with others. The couple started buying, renovating and flipping homes five years ago with the purchase of their first place together. “We actually had a flood in the house, so we had to renovate and we sold it pretty quickly,” Chloe says. They did the same thing with their next house, minus the flood. Their third house was brand new when they bought it, so they added their own flare before flipping it. “We did the landscaping,” Chloe says. “And we put our own touch on it, as it was a spec home. We basically turned it into a custom-designed home.”

SUMMER 2019 19
Taking a Gamble Their current home was more involved — and a lot riskier. “We got the idea to buy this 90-year-old farmhouse,” Chloe says. The development potential for the 9,000-square-foot lot captured their imaginations at first sight. “As soon as we pulled up, we fell in love with the landscape,” she adds. “It’s just a few blocks from midtown Maple Ridge, but you feel like you’re in the country. There are chickens and horses, and we could picture our kids riding bikes and not having to worry about cars. We liked the peacefulness and the quiet. You can be at Dewdney almost instantly, but you’re far enough away that you can’t hear it.” However, there were some problems with the project, including a difficult lot to build on, and the need for a septic field. 20
SUMMER 2019
“It was deemed a terrible idea; even the neighbours said ‘you can’t build here,’” Chloe says. They decided to do it anyway. With Chris’ 13 years’ experience in construction and Chloe’s flair for design, the couple was ready for the challenge and willing to take a risk. “We’ve always been gamblers,” Chris says. “Chloe’s grampa says if you want to get ahead you have to gamble.” “It worked out,” Chloe adds. “We bought the farmhouse and tore it down and we have been building our current house for the last year and a half. We moved in April.”
Authentic Farmhouse Style Building the house was not without challenges.
“Our biggest issue was getting the permits,” Chris says. That is, until the design plans came in. “We had a different house plan to start with but it wasn’t quite what we both wanted,” he adds. “It was maybe more easily sellable, but it didn’t go with the landscape of the area. So we went back to the drawing board, threw away all the plans and money, and started from scratch. It was a long, expensive lesson to learn.” Once the couple settled on the plans that they had envisioned for a traditional farmhouse-style home, they picked the tradespeople they wanted to accomplish the tasks they couldn’t do themselves. “Chris did all the trim, doors, floors and shiplap walls,” says Chloe, “and I did all finishings and colours. It involved a lot of super late nights. Wherever we could save money and do the projects ourselves, we did. We did that with all the houses.”
SUMMER 2019 21
22
SUMMER 2019
The resulting 2,700-square-foot home is a two-level walk-out with the master bedroom on the main floor. “We did the kids’ three bedrooms upstairs with a playroom in an open loft area,” Chloe says. “The front entrance has vaulted 26-foothigh ceilings and a black wrought-iron chandelier. It’s very open concept and grand.” But it’s also cosy — that was a necessity. “With the trend being the modern farmhouse, we wanted a more authentic farmhouse look,” Chris says. “The inside has a country, homey feel.” On the outside, it’s a four-gabled house with peaks on each side and large front and back porches. “We got a lot of inspiration from the southern states,” Chloe says. “And we wanted a house with a lot of character. You wouldn’t picture this house in Maple Ridge.” So now that it’s near completion (only landscaping remains) are they thinking about listing it and starting over yet again? “I think we’ll stay here,” says the mom of three, with another on the way. “I can’t picture leaving, and the kids are adapted to it now. Plus they’ve been able to stay at same school and keep the same friends.” The couple is hoping to eventually build farmhouse-style homes for others. “Modern farmhouse is the trendy thing but the traditional farmhouse is timeless. I like old, character houses, and a warm, homey feel,” Chris says. “A lot of houses are the same modern style these days, whereas we’re more traditional.” “Because our house is so unique, our goal is to be able to build this type of house or do renovations for others,” Chloe concludes. “That would be the dream job.”

A BREATH OF FRESH OXYGEN

Maple Ridge-based Jen Hamilton has worked out a formula for success with her fresh take on yoga
M
ost people say you can’t have it all. But most people aren’t Jen Hamilton.
The Maple Ridge entrepreneur launched her first fitness business — Cardio Core Bootcamp — shortly after giving birth to twins. “I had just finished birthing twins, and had three kids under three. There’s no better way to make sure you’re committed to a fitness program than to run a business around it,” she laughs. “Fortunately, I love fitness. It's a great way to channel energy in a positive way.” Hamilton, who has a degree in business and marketing, had the idea for Cardio Core Bootcamp while working as a community support worker and social services liaison for youth. “I went to Kwantlen University to become a community support worker because I wanted to give something back after I had received care from family and friends as I recovered from a bad car accident,” she says. “And I realized that fitness is another way of taking care of people.” She shared her idea with a colleague and fitness guru, and the two partnered up. Together they launched and grew the business to 59 locations in three Canadian provinces before selling it.
28
SUMMER 2019
“In the fitness industry, things have a shelf life,” Hamilton says. “Bootcamp was strong for several years but we recognized when we’d reached a peak. The trend was plateauing and we had an interest to purchase, so we embraced that and got out before the trend was over.”
Keeping the Momentum Going Hamilton wasn’t about to stop there. She then purchased Oxygen Yoga — a fitness “trend” based on a centuries-old practice — and proceeded to develop a unique hot yoga franchise business. “Our differentiator is our infrared systems,” she says. “Our infrared panels heat up your core and allow you to push out toxins. Hot yoga studios heat up the temperature of the room, whereas infrared heats up your body, not the room.” Hamilton has used this healing modality to develop programs geared toward athletes and those who are recovering from injuries. “We have ICBC clients and lots of people doing rehabilitation,” she says. “We also work with sports teams like the BC Lions and Vancouver Giants, helping athletes to foster the ability to perform better. We just started doing yoga for golfers with Meadow Gardens Golf Club. The first Tuesday of each month we do yoga right on the golf course.”
@JENATOXYGEN
SUMMER 2019 29
A constant stream of new ideas fuels Hamilton to continue to innovate and expand. “This is what I love — introducing people to programs tailored to their needs.” After a couple of merger inquiries, Hamilton decided she was ready to take the plunge and go bigger. She contacted a broker and was put in touch with David “Patch” Patchell-Evans from Good Life Fitness. “I was ready to bring on a partner,” she says. “I had grown it to the capacity I could and needed more legs and a team underneath me to allow it to grow instead of plateau. Patch is an amazing icon in this industry. He sent his yoga instructor to some Oxygen classes and they loved it. Then, I talked to them on the phone, we met, went for dinner, laughed and the rest is history.” Since partnering, Hamilton has added an additional six locations to the business.
“I REALIZED THAT FITNESS IS ANOTHER WAY OF TAKING CARE OF PEOPLE.”

“We’re now at 72 locations sold, with another master territory created,” she says. “[Patchell-Evans’] presence is in the east, so we’re growing more quickly there. We have a lot of ideas in play to work together. He’s a brilliant man. We work from our heart and then plan accordingly around it to develop the infrastructure and models. I’m able to leverage off of his experience and networks and team.”
Hamilton’s plan is to take Oxygen international. “We’re going to be at 125 locations by 2020, if not more. I have lots of confidence in the momentum of how the business is growing.”
Growing Business and Family Now Hamilton’s kids are 18 and 16, and her family has grown exponentially with her Oxygen franchisees. “I’m grateful every day that I’ve got these franchise owners,” she says. “We meet for lunch. I even get Mother’s Day messages from them. We’ve built an amazing family and network of people who have a common goal.” But it hasn’t exactly been easy for the single mom. “There have been a lot of ups and downs and times when I’ve wanted to wave the white flag,” she says. “But then I’ll get a message from a member saying ‘Jen, I’m off anti-depressants, thank you.’” Those messages keep her going, along with her own fitness routines. “I’m physically active myself, and if I’m having a bad day, I’ll walk my dogs with my headphones on, singing. That’s how I ground myself.”

Her perseverance and business acumen has not gone unnoticed. She’s recently been nominated for an Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for the second time, and has won the CFA Franchisee’s Choice Award two years in a row, as well as the Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Award, among others. That’s one thing she says she loves about working in Maple Ridge: the ability to make a difference. “It’s a nice, diverse community and people recognize each other’s successes,” she says. “There’s a genuine feeling that you really can have an impact on people’s lives.”

Ready to begin? Download a brochure from circlefarmtour. com and start exploring. The Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows tour includes 12 scrumptious stops you can visit in any order. At Dr. Bee’s Honeyland Canada (drbee.ca), the stars of the show are the powerful pollinators that are key to life on this planet. According to general manager Richard Lin, the farm is focused on “the importance of taking care of bees and the environment as a whole.” Crops as varied as soybeans, citrus fruits, almonds, sunflowers and alfalfa all require pollination, so the aim at Dr. Bee’s is to educate visitors about the crucial role of bees and the dangers facing them, such as colony collapse.

As Lin puts it, Dr. Bee’s is all about “starting young, teaching little kids, then spreading that message to the older audience.” In the store, live bees are on display as well as an empty beehive. Try your hand at using centrifugal force to extract honey. Pick up sweet products such as honey, bee pollen, bee propolis, soap bars and lip balms. To learn even more, schedule a guided tour complete with an informative presentation (ideal for school groups), or return on July 13 and 14 for the Bees and Blueberries Festival. This free fest is abuzz with activities such as live music, pony rides, pie-eating contests, guided tours and a live-bee beard on Lin himself.

“It’s part of the job description,” he says with a laugh. Meanwhile, the family-run Leghorn Ranch (vancouverhorsebackriding.com) has 20 horses in summertime. Janet Shanahan and her partner run the picturesque place, which features an abundance of flowers and stunning views of the nearby mountains. According to Shanahan, “When people come, they don’t want to leave.”

Fortunately, it’s easy to return. Novices and experienced riders alike can book a trail ride to explore the area’s backcountry with a guide. Kids can sign up for summer camp. And birthday parties include pony or horse rides along with crafts such as horseshoe decorating. For a culinary adventure/experience, Hopcott Meats is a family farm with a butcher shop, deli, grocery store and bistro. Jenn Hopcott-Foxley, the operations manager, says the business prides itself on its non-GMO, steroid-free, dry-aged beef sourced from just three ranches in BC. “We can tell you when that animal was born and on which ranch,” she says, adding that this ensures both traceability and consistent quality of the meat. But Hopcott Meats sells more than just beef: “We’re all about local, and supporting local farmers and producers. We also have chicken, pork and lamb.”
The farm uses two wood-chip smokers to cure bacon, pepperoni and ham in-house. In the store, you can buy an array of local groceries, from produce and sauces to ice cream and baked goods. Enjoy a leisurely meal in the bistro, peruse the farm’s corn fields and cranberry bogs, or grab a snack and wander around the nearby dykes. All year round, Amsterdam Garden Centre sells locally grown and organic plants, gardening supplies and gifts. The staff can help with planning everything from a container to full backyard gardens. To develop your green thumb even more, sign up for a workshop. Golden Ears Cheesecrafters is a farm store run by two sisters. It stocks fresh butter and — of course — cheese: Brie, cheddar, feta, Gouda and many more. Watch cheese being made, enjoy breakfast or lunch in the Country Kitchen, or feast on a gourmet dinner while the chef demonstrates how to prepare each of the courses.

WANDERLUST
+ WORDS BY SUSAN LUNDY
Jamaica ya ’mon! living well in paradise
T
here is nothing dark and stormy about the cocktails being served up by Captain Joseph Brown in his hidden beachside oasis. In fact, the rum and ginger-beer drinks are as smooth, silky and effervescent as the calm Jamaican sea that stretches before us. Before our cocktail, we’d been motoring along the southern coastline of Jamaica in Captain Joseph’s tour boat, keeping an eye open for dolphins and enjoying the bliss of balmy wind on our faces. Landing at a remote beach, we waded through the warm water, darted over a strip of hot, golden sand and onto a path that led to a flight of stairs culminating in a fully hidden platform with a beautifully set table, bar and foliage-framed views of the sea. This is Sea Grape, a deserted, seven-mile private beach where Captain Joseph Treasure Beach Adventures hosts tour groups in his secret hideout. The vibrant red tablecloth glows in the sunlight as we sit down with our “dark and stormys” and feast on crab, lobster and traditional Jamaican rice and peas, all prepared by Captain Joseph’s

charming wife on a huge outdoor grill. Later we climb up to an observation platform, again searching the horizon for dolphins, and then strip down and float in the so-warm water. We came to Jamaica on a “health and wellness” excursion and in this moment — with my mind clear and calm, and my stomach full with real, wholesome food — I definitely feel the vibe. Ah, Jamaica. Arriving the day before, we drove via tour bus from the airport at Montego Bay through the mountains to Black River, and then along the coast to Treasure Beach, mesmerized by the colours, vibrancy and breathtaking views of this Caribbean island. Checking in at Jakes Hotel — named one of the 14 best family hotels in the world by Conde Nast Traveller in 2018 — I actually gasped as I stepped into my room, which, with its back doors flung open to the warm breeze, sat perched on the rocks just steps from the ocean. The funky, 49-room, family-run Jakes is nothing short of miraculous.
Offering rooms, bungalows, cottages and villas — some at sea level, some on the cliffs above, some rising like flowers in the gardens — it has a Bohemian, artsy vibe. There are colour-drenched walls, oddly-shaped doorways, glowing glass bottles used like stained glass, mosaics on the pathways, outdoor showers hidden behind seashell-androck walls and bathtubs perched on private balconies. No two rooms are alike. Details small and large in Jakes’ outdoor patio restaurant, pool and bar area rival the gardens for splashes of colour: the tables, for example, pop with hot pink coverings one day and glow in rich red the next. We enjoy several meals at Jakes Restaurant, as well as Jack Sprat Seafood and Restaurant located next door. Since this area grows 80 per cent of Jamaica’s domestic produce and is located at the ocean’s edge, the food is fresh and locally sourced. I choose authentic Jamaican cuisine, grooving on delicacies like ackee, codfish and callaloo for breakfast, fried plantains for a snack, and all manner of seafood. I don’t eat meat, but my fellow travellers revel in the flavours of Jamaican patties and jerk chicken. The healthy food and laid-back vibe of Jakes definitely speaks to the health and wellness theme, but the pièce de résistance is a morning yoga session followed by massage at Jakes’ Driftwood Spa. While both experiences are exquisite, the setting really makes them stand out. The open yoga space sits rooftop under a palapa with views across the ocean, and the slap of sea on the rocks below with the chatter of birds sets a gentle backdrop as we move through postures and yogic breathing. Similarly, the massage unfolds in a bright, open space, filled with soothing scents and a peaceful murmur of sound.

Jakes’ offers other health-boosting activities such as a sunrise bike ride (although considering the hilliness of the region, I’m not sure this wouldn’t actually kill me instead), hikes and farm and ocean tours.
Our second spa visit occurs a few days later, after we bus back up the coast to the city of Negril. Rockhouse Spa — two-time winner of the World Travel Award for Best Spa in Jamaica — presents as another miracle. My treatment takes place in a darkened, sweetly scented room in the Spa Pavilion — a temple-like structure set amid a flourishing garden — but cliff-edge Spa Cabanas and a Bath

House are also used. The spa promises an authentic Jamaican experience, incorporating treatment rituals like the “welcome” foot soak and scrub, and uses all-natural, Caribbean-made products. A peek into the Bath House reveals two side-by-side tubs facing an open view of the sea. They are filled with warm, milky water, strewn with pink flowers and scented with aromatherapy blends. (Sign me up!) For our stay in Negril, we check into the upscale Royalton Negril, an all-inclusive resort that pretty much offers everything you could possibly need, including personal butlers and — wait for it — a pillow menu service. It takes us two-and-a-half hours to tour the Royalton Negril, which has three distinct districts (Resort, Diamond Club and
the adults-only Hideaway), more than six restaurants, a spa, indoor and outdoor pools, children’s day-care, teen hang-out space, conference rooms and a sports bar that, apparently run by a Canadian, has a hockey theme. A visit to the west-facing Ocean Point Bistro at the very far end of the resort quickly establishes it as my favourite spot. From here, later in the day, you can watch boats returning to port as the sun dips behind the horizon sending fingers of colour across the sky. And it's here that I sit on my final evening, sipping another bright and calm dark and stormy, feel-ing relaxed, healthy and fit, and watching the sun set on what has been a remarkable visit. Ah, Jamaica. I’ll be back.
IF YOU GO: Our bus service to and from the airport was exceptional: paradisetravelsinja.com At the airport in Montego Bay, Club Mobay fast tracks visitors through customs and immigration and provides a place to await flights with offerings such as an on-site spa and complimentary food and beverages: paradisetravelsinja. com/club-mobay
