Emily Barker-Voisine Westview secondary
It is wonderful to have an opportunity to recognize Emily Barker-Voisine as one of our school and local community’s Leaders of Tomorrow. However, it needs to be said that Emily is not just a leader of the future – she is a leader, today. Emily, in Grade 12, has always been an excellent, extremely conscientious student, maintaining Honour Roll and Super G status during her five years at Westview Secondary. But her accomplishments and contributions extend much further than that. She devotes countless hours of her time to various community organizations. She is a very accomplished wrestler who has shared her talents and mentorship as a student coach for the school team in her grade 11 and 12 years. In addition, she is a student volunteer at Ridge Meadows Hospital. She also represented Westview at Encounters Canada, and at the moderated conversation with former U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama.
She advocates for herself and others, and works patiently and determinedly to raise awareness of important local and global issues. And perhaps where Emily shines the most is her engagement with her Metis culture and community. Over the last three years, in particular, Emily has sought out opportunities to not only educate herself, but also her peers, adults and younger students, about the importance of all of us having a better understanding of an appreciation for aboriginal history and culture. She is the only student at our school enrolled in English First Peoples 12 and First Nations 12. She attends as many public talks and events as she can fit into her busy schedule, and has been nominated to participate in many Metis youth conferences. She willingly and openly shares her experiences and understanding with others, and always with the bright, sunny and humorous disposition that is so much a part of who Emily is. We know she will continue to shine as she
moves forward into her Aboriginal Studies at SFU in the fall. Emily has been a wonderful leader during her five years at Westview, and this is just the beginning of her bright future and potential.

Ben Barnier
Josh Black
Ben Barnier is an exceptional leader at Webster’s Corners Elementary. At a small school, it’s often all hands on deck and Ben is always the first one to volunteer to help with any task, no matter how big the task may be. Ben has been a huge part of the school’s Me to We club and senior leadership team. He always has great ideas and words of encouragement for everyone around him. Ben has been a huge help to many of our younger students and acts as a mentor to several younger Webster’s Corners kids during his recess and lunch time. He spends his free time making sure they have someone to talk to and someone to help them navigate through the school during those times. In class, Ben is always enthusiastic and
Josh Black may be the hardest working student at Samuel Robertson Technical. He attends regular classes full-time during the day and in the late afternoon he attends the SRT Metal Fabrication Program. Somehow, he still manages to be the School of Rock sound person, the assembly set-up person and the school’s all-round volunteer. He is also a valued member of the district’s Student Voice program. Josh is very active in his church and as a volunteer in the community. He is a horse wrangler at the Timberline Ranch, but this tough side is tempered by helping younger kids learn how ride. participates in class discussions. He’s a great leader in projects, but he also knows when to listen to others and make sure that their ideas are included. Ben demonstrates a strong sense of fairness, equality, and empathy and he definitely glows with Webster’s pride.
Mackenzie Bermudez

Mackenzie Bermudez is a leader today and tomorrow. Mackenzie entered Connex with the goal of completing her requirements for graduation. She has been an excellent role model for the students who she sits with and encourages students to do their best. She is working on the final requirements for grad and is taking the time to upgrade her marks. She works independently and she maintains a positive and helpful attitude. Mackenzie used to play competitive soccer and was being considered for scholarships in the U.S. She sustained an injury to her knee that forced her out of the game. Since that time, she has suffered from a number of health concerns, but hasn’t let these roadblocks stop her. Mackenzie now uses her knowledge and skills to help younger players as an assistant coach. She organizes workouts, helps players to understand game strategies and makes sure that the necessary equipment is present.
Claire Bruce has been an active leader at SRT since Grade 8. She was elected to the student council executive in 2017 and has been the driving force behind many school activities. Claire, a straight-A student every year since Grade 8, currently has a GPA of 94 per cent. She is hard-working and driven to excel. Claire is also very active in the community. She is a member of Parliament’s Canadian Youth Council in Maple Ridge. She has assisted in planning town hall discussions on youth mental health and is a powerful speaker. She has been the key speaker at town hall events and has presented both opening and closing arguments in a variety of debates. Claire received a Certificate of Excellence from our MP, Dan Ruimy.

Marissa Burke is an incredibly helpful student at Hammond Elementary who values volunteerism. She is the first to raise her hand in class if anything needs to be done. She helps with hot lunches, school bazaars, and fundraising. Marissa does not help in order to be recognized for her service; she volunteers in order to make her school a better place.

Mateo Carreras Pitt Meadows secondary
Mateo Carreras is the modern version of a renaissance man: he is curious, a risk-taker, creative, has perseverance and self-discipline, has a thirst for knowledge and new experiences, and excels in physical, intellectual, artistic and social fields. Mateo’s leadership is subtle, never loud or boastful; it is a simple gesture like opening a door for someone, helping peers in a guitar class refine their technique, or providing potentially life-saving first aid assistance. Mateo excels in music, languages, the sciences, mathematics, humanities, computer animation and programming, and visual arts. However, Pitt Meadows secondary cannot take credit for all his accomplishments as he is selftaught in coding and created his own app by the time he was in Grade 7. Mateo picked up the trumpet in Grade 6 and is an accomplished guitar player. The only field missing from Mateo’s school life is athletics, which he pursued outside of school, in the pool. Mateo began swimming in Grade 7, and five years later has earned his Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, standard in first-aid, national lifeguard for pool, waterpark, and water safety instructor certifications.
Mateo also volunteers his time at the pool as an assistant and instructor in training. With his lifeguard certification, Mateo learned the skills required to be a PMSS first-aid attendant. He is presently gaining real life experience dealing with a variety of medical emergencies that can happen during the school day. He has worked both independently and with the school’s WorkSafeBC firstaid attendant, and has attended to assist B.C. Ambulance Service Paramedics. Mateo is mature for his age, calm in an emergency and utterly reliable. Mateo maturity is also apparent in his choice of hobbies – politics. Mateo is on the provincial NDP executive for Pitt Meadows as a Young New Democrat member and attends their weekly meetings and the YND conference once per year. Mateo has probably knocked on your door while canvassing during campaigns. Being involved in deciding who makes the decisions for our society is something that is very important to Mateo. He is a well-respected member of our school community and will continue to make a difference in our world.

Grace Choi
Maple Ridge secondary Grace Choi is a distinguished student of Maple Ridge Secondary who leads though her compassion for others and her unwavering commitment to a cause. Grace found strong value in her work as a mentor of the MRSS Link Crew, where she provided guidance to new students. Grace thrives in connecting with people and determining their passions and concerns, but it is her infectious enthusiasm that draws people into action. This same leadership style was exhibited in her role on the MRSS Student Council, on which Grace worked as an executive member for four years. This year, Grace holds the position of Grade 12 representative. Grace has overseen and managed large school-wide events that had many moving parts and many student volunteers, while always maintaining a thoughtful, positive and composed approach. Grace consistently demonstrates an inner conviction that leading with enthusiasm will compel others to follow that passion, and her example has been an inspiration to other students.

Grace’s work and dedication to the annual MRSS Food Drive is yet another example of her belief in leadership through service and connections to the wider community. Grace has also worked as an advocate for students in a student-led protest, where she worked at a grassroots level to communicate with students and summarize their concerns. Core to her leadership belief is that every person matters and every person makes a difference. It is her deep-rooted passion for people and for her school that has strengthened the MRSS school community. Grace graduates this year with an exemplary academic record and as co-valedictorian. Next year, she will be attending the University of Toronto, entering the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Lucas Constable has always been known as someone who gets fully involved in the world around him. He has been interested in engaging with the community and beyond for many years. He has dedicated many hours to extracurricular activities at Thomas Haney Secondary, such as martial arts, Scouting, piano and guitar. Lucas has always enjoyed everything school has to offer, including academic studies and many club activities. He is a member of jazz band and has been part of THSS Sightline Theatre productions for the past three years, as crew and now on stage. Since Elementary school, Lucas has been involved in school-run programs that focus on helping people locally and globally. Lucas had the privilege of attending his first WE Day in his Grade 7 year and has always been inspired by that experience, raising money to donate overseas. His main focus for leadership has been through his school’s Key Club, a service and leadership club sponsored by Kiwanis. This club is student-run and dedicated to service of others, and Lucas has served on the executive, most recently as president.

For the past five years, Lucas has been involved in the Student Voice group, a district wide leadership group that brings students from all the schools together for a common purpose. This past year, Lucas was very excited to be accepted into the Big Brothers program and have the chance to be a mentor for a younger student. He looks forward to their weekly visits. Lucas is an advocate for youth having a voice at the table. He has spoken before the school board to share his perspective on mental health supports in school. Lucas is currently part of a larger Youth Planning Council in the community, bringing the youth perspective to the table. Lucas is excited for the future, and his part in leading it.
At Highland Park Elementary, Jaden Cook is a leader because she does a lot for our school. She monitors in the Kindergarten classroom every recess and lunch. She helps the kids put on their shoes and coats, has them walk quietly down the hallway, and watches them while they eat their lunches. Jaden also does Letter Buddies three times a week with a child in a primary classroom. She helps him practice his letter names and sounds. Jaden is also involved in running fundraising activities for our Grade 7 leaving ceremony. Jaden can always be found with a smile on her face and practicing random acts of kindness. Outside of school, Jaden plays for the Pride ’06 softball team. She always tries her hardest at games and practices. She encourages her teammates to do their best and always focusses on the positives. Jaden can also be seen umpiring other softball games.

Jackson Croteau
Blue Mountain elementary Jackson Croteau is a wonderful member of the Blue Mountain Elementary community. He is a Grade 7 student who is an active member of the school’s Me to We student group. Jack’s teachers note how kind-hearted, compassionate and helpful he is both inside the classroom and out of it. Jack’s sister has spina bifida; he often shares with the class stories about her and how people with disabilities should be treated with kindness. Jack is an avid hockey player who will be attending Garibaldi Secondary in the fall. He explained to his principal that he enjoys working with kindergarten students,
helping with their academics and helping outside. Thank you, Jackson, for all your leadership.
Maialee Decker Alouette elementary
Maialee Decker has been a student at Alouette Elementary for the past year and a half and made a strong impression on the students and staff. Her kind nature and mature attitude are natural components of her leadership skills, but it is her passion about social justice that truly stands out. Maia believes strongly that people’s differences should be celebrated, and that it is an injustice when students are judged or treated poorly when they don’t fit the abstract ‘norm’ of their peer group. Maia’s sense of fairness is what prompted her to join the Alouette leadership club (Stronger Together) and to take part in Student Voice this year. She has long been interested in the global issues of poverty and illness in poorer countries and has a keen desire to visit and volunteer in Kenya when she is older. “We have the resources to help these countries, and we aren’t doing enough,” she says. Access to clean water and an education are a must for all students her age, and she would like to do her part to make that a reality. Maia is appreciative of her time with the Student Voice group. She enjoyed working
with her peers and with older students in the district, and learning about certain district initiatives, like Project Hello. She likes that the club has worked on smaller, local initiatives and believes that “a whole bunch of small differences can make a big difference.” With outside school activities like drama classes, singing lessons, and art classes, Maia demonstrates a creative and positive attitude about what is possible in the world. She hopes that people will see her as open and accepting, and as a person willing to stand up for what she believes in. These qualities definitely make her stand out as a leader of tomorrow.
Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It’s about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. Meaghan Durupt is a compassionate and thoughtful Grade 7 student at Golden Ears Elementary. She participates in several clubs at school, including Tech Club and Student Voice. Meaghan likes being part of the creative and technical force behind the scenes in her work with the Tech Club, bringing enjoyment to others at the school and the surrounding community. Through her involvement in Student Voice, Meaghan feels she has grown in her understanding that community is much more than just your local surroundings and actually includes a much larger scope. One of Meaghan’s recent passions is her involvement on the Cultural Update Task Force and its creation of the 10-year plan for Maple Ridge. She and her parents are also involved in the Maple Ridge Heritage Society and the B.C. Heritage Federation. And these are just a few of Meaghan’s numerous community involvements. Meaghan’s belief in the value of helping in the community has been inspired by her own family. She has seen their efforts to

Jaida Ellis is one of the most motivated and involved Grade 7 students you will have the pleasure of knowing. She is involved in multiple sports at Edith McDermott Elementary and plays ice hockey in the community. When she is not out on the field or on the ice, Jaida can be found supporting community events and participating in local politics. She also acts globally through Student Voice, Global Citizens, WE Day, and volunteer opportunities at the school. First to raise her hand, Jaida has been an office monitor, as well as a classroom monitor, and was also the runner-up for her help others in the community and has also seen the community help them during times of need. Meaghan feels she is following in her family’s footsteps. Meaghan enjoys this community involvement and hopes to inspire others to make a difference in their community. Kylie Feng entered the international education program at Maple Ridge Christian School in September 2015 from Hong Kong. Over the past three years, she has made a deep impact on her classmates and in the high school community. Kylie thrives as a community-server and exemplifies what it means to be a servant leader. In her time at MRCS, she has initiated new events for the student body to enjoy. She has continually worked to build a strong school community where everyone feels like they belong. She has served as the vice-president of the student council with a genuine care for others. As a self-starter with big dreams, Kylie’s hard work and organizational ability allows her to make her dreams a reality. She is a gifted musician and public speaker. She has been a welcome addition to the drama program, in which she pushed herself to grow her stage presence. In addition, she has excelled in all her courses and has been accepted into the

Keenan Gander, in Grade 7 at Kanaka Creek Elementary, leads by example, builds up others, and is a willing team-player or leader depending on what the situation calls for. As a natural leader, Keenan seeks opportunities to get involved in positive ways, bringing along with him a willing group. Keenan’s teacher, Mr. Moran, describes him as “an awesome young man with amazing talents and a lot of personality.” Keenan helps sets a positive tone both in the classroom and the school. Having a great sense of humour and being aware of the needs of others contribute to his ability to connect. He thoughtfully includes others. Both academically and athletically, Keenan works hard and achieves notable results. We often find inspiration in Keenan’s desire to give back to the school and community. He is actively involved in the Me to We team and was a founding member of the school’s environmental Green Team. “I wanted to help the school improve, and I found the Green Team was a good way to get involved and help others understand the im-
Katelyn Gisborne, in Grade 6 French Immersion at Laity View Elementary, has attended the school since kindergarten. This year, Katelyn has been involved in Student Leadership and Student Voice, and has also worked as a library helper and lunch monitor. Later this month, Katelyn will attend the Student Voice CORE project and will participate in several leadership workshops. Katelyn’s biggest contribution to our school this year was in starting the Green Team, the mandate of which is to keep our school and planet a greener and cleaner place to live. She took the initiative to find a teacher sponsor and gather together other students to help with projects such as collecting mascara wands needed for cleaning rescued wildlife. In her spare time, Katelyn also dances (ballet, lyrical, jazz) and enjoys spending time with her friends and family. In the future, Katelyn wants to become an Elementary teacher, as well as a dance teacher on weekends.

Maggie Graydon Pitt Meadow secondary
Kind, polite, co-operative, friendly, mature, self-initiating, talented, inspirational, positive, and dedicated are all adjectives used by the staff at Pitt Meadows secondary to describe Grade 11 student Maggie Graydon. In addition to excelling in her courses, Maggie is a strong Link Leader within the Link Crew Program and a dedicated member of the student council. Maggie takes her leadership roles very seriously and makes a positive impact on the culture and wellness of students and staff at Pitt Meadows secondary. Maggie has a passion and excellence for track and field, specifically running, and trains every day. Rain or shine, Maggie can be seen pounding the pavement on the streets of Pitt Meadows. PMSS track and field coach Matthew Mikes estimates that Maggie runs over 70 kilometres a week. Maggie demonstrates her dedication to the other members of her PMSS track team by helping them train and leads them to successive wins at track meets. Mikes states: “Maggie has kept the track and field team alive for the past two years. Her constant communication with me and of-

fering her time to train athletes has been inspiring.” Maggie also trains three times a week in South Surrey with the Coastal Track Club. Her training has paid off as she has competed in the provincial championships for both track and field and cross country events every year since she was in Grade 8. Maggie has also raised money for Athletes in Kind while winning the local OktoberFAST 10 km run three years in a row. Maggie’s leadership does not end within her own school community as she has also volunteered at local elementary school track meets, and spent her summer working with children as a volunteer for the Pitt Meadows Recreation Centre. Maggie is committed to a healthy lifestyle and cares a great deal for animals and the environment, which is why she became a pescetarian nine years ago. Her goal is to become a physiotherapist or nutritionist to help people live healthier and happier lives. Maggie believes that “if I can make just one person a bit

happier, or guide them in the right direction, I believe that is the start of success.” Committed to making both her school and community a better place, Maggie has indicated her wish to continue as a Link Leader and a member of the student council executive for her graduation year. She wants to “make a difference in people’s lives” and believes that “you must be part of the change to see a change.” There is no doubt that she will continue to affect change as a Leader of Tomorrow.

Coral Holmes, in Grade 6 French immersion at Laity View Elementary, has been very active this year with Student Leadership, Aboriginal Student Leadership, the school choir and has worked as a library helper and lunch monitor. Coral also enjoyed participating in Ignite this year and Book Fest for the past two years. Currently, Coral is working with the Aboriginal Leadership Team on a presentation of the Seven Sacred Teachings. She is busy preparing the script that the team will use when presenting to other students in the school from Kindergarten to Grade 7. Outside of school, Coral enjoys both indoor and outdoor rock climbing with her friends and family. She is also a certified babysitter and often looks after her younger cousins. Coral hopes to continue participating in leadership activities next year and in high school.
Gabe Liosis has left a legacy to Maple Ridge Secondary through his vision, inspiration, and integrity as a leader. His strengths in leadership surfaced early when, in Grade 9, he became involved in the redesign of the MRSS Student Council. Gabe’s foresight produced an all-inclusive assembly which encourages membership based upon willingness to serve the school community. He reconfigured the council into two branches. “Connor is a treat to have in class,” his teachers report. Connor Leggett is a Grade 7 leader at Blue Mountain Elementary because he often thinks of others before himself. Connor helps several students with special needs in his classroom. Without any hesitation, Connor is also quick to help anyone who may be hurt or need some assistance. Just recently, his teacher broke her foot and Connor was helping to move the iPad cart or to tend to any needs she had. His compassionate nature is evident to everyone around him. He has contributed immensely to the Me to We initiatives this year. Connor is also an amazing soccer player who plans to attend Thomas Haney in the fall. Thank you, Connor, for all your leadership.

Harry Hooge Elementary intermediate boys’ basketball team Harry Hooge elementary
During the 2018/2019 school year, the intermediate boys’ basketball team at Harry Hooge Elementary demonstrated exceptional qualities, such as patience and understanding, on and off the court. Students on this team were determined to include all those who were wanting to participate. The boys were adamant before the season started that they wanted to play in the competitive School District No. 42 league. They were advocates for inclusion and wanted every member to have a
chance to play and feel a part of the team. The boys often spoke to their opposing team players and coaches prior to games, requesting a show of respect to all players. On the court, the boys set every player up for success and ensured that every teammate got a shot at the basket. The boys ended up winning third place in a nail-biting game. They demonstrated perseverance and determination throughout the game, and the third-place win felt like a first-place win. As a majority of
these boys are moving on to high school, we know that they will continue to show the same determination and willingness to include all those who choose to participate in competitive sports. Liam Loughery, in Grade 6 at Pitt Meadows Elementary, is recognized by staff and teachers as a natural leader because of his kind and compassionate nature. Liam is always looking for ways to include others both in the classroom and around the school. He invites the younger kids to play with the older ones on the playground, serves as a lunchtime monitor and is always looking out for the best interest of everyone around him. Liam is a member of the district Student Voice and the school leadership program and works hard to come up with new ideas to lead, promote school spirit and kindness and fundraise for both school initiatives, such as the new playground and outside charities such as the Food Bank. This past winter his school entrepreneurship team was one of the most successful, which benefitted his group, helped finance a class field trip and also supported a local charity. Liam is well-rounded individual, excelling academically, artistically (through drama), and athletically.
Alec Lyotier, a Grade 7 student at James Cameron School, is worthy of recognition for his way of being. One of Alec’s strengths is that he is an active listener and he is able to bring out the best in everybody. He has an innate ability to bring people together in order to build a shared vision – the mark of an extraordinary leader. Additionally, Alec is not afraid to fail. His determination is exemplary. Thomas Edison said: “I have not failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work.” It is this same attitude that we see Alec demonstrate. Alec continually reminds us of multiple intelligences. “Don’t judge my intelligence by my reading ability,” he said recently. “It’s only one type of intelligence.” We admire Alec’s courage to challenge the status quo. He is a curious and empathetic boy with a great sense of humour. He is quick to lend a hand when it comes to trouble-shooting IT problems and there have been numerous times when we have experienced reverse mentoring. That is, Alec often steps into a leadership role with technological problem-solving. We look forward to hearing about the many great things he does in the future.

Rini Liu is an excellent role model and currently attends Garibaldi secondary. A Grade 10 honours student who loves to be involved, Rini makes many positive contributions to the school and the school culture. In this school year alone, Rini is part of Link Crew – an organization that helps eighth graders transition into secondary school comfortably. She has been a member of Garibaldi’s Student Leadership and Student Government for almost three years, and is a student executive member in Garibaldi’s music program, in which has played the clarinet, the baritone saxophone, and currently plays the flute. In Garibaldi’s most recent musical, Mamma Mia, Rini was a part of the ensemble. She describes it as an exceptional experience and is thankful to have been involved. Last year, Rini and three of her friends won the Youth Philanthropy Initiative, in which she advocated for and was granted $5000 to donate to our local non-profit organization, the One Way Club Society. Next year, Rini plans to continue her positive contributions to our school and will be taking the International Baccalaureate diploma offered at Garibaldi secondary.

At school Liam participates in volleyball, basketball and track, and outside of school he participates in tennis, golf and hockey, where he has been an alternate captain of his competitive team. In all aspects of his life, Liam demonstrates strong leadership qualities and always encourages his friends, class and teammates to do their best. Liam has high ambitions for his future in athletics and academics. He hopes to eventually get a business degree, possibly followed by a law degree, and to use his knowledge and skills to help people.

Kyle Martin
Marcelino Magar is an active member in the Golden Ears Elementary community. He is interested in helping people and believes everyone can make a difference. Marcelino is an excellent role model of our school motto: “Take care of yourself. Take care of others. Take care of our school.” He leads by example. For example, for Tech Club, he is part of a team that sets events up for the school, and for Library Club helps in the school’s library so others have easy access to books. As well, Marcelino is a kindergarten monitor who shows great patience and compassion in his interactions with the younger students. Another school initiative that Marcelino is involved in is the Me to We club which has raised over $5,000 this school year alone. Marcelino is also active in the community. He volunteers at Planet Ice, helping kids learn how to skate, and also helps fix and build things in his church. When asked about the motivation behind his great involvement at school and in the community, Marcelino shared that he believes we all need to take an active role in order to strengthen connections between us all.
Kyle Martin is a Grade 7 student at École Eric Langton Elementary. He is incredibly motivated, a tremendous leader, and a terrific role model. Kyle uses his incredible motivation both in and out of the classroom environment. Within the classroom, he is motivated to do whatever is necessary to achieve great successes in both academic and extra-curricular activities. Since his first day four years ago, Kyle has always been a regular voluntary contributor to lessons and activities in the classroom. He has never been afraid to try his best or ask for help, because he has always known that learning is a process that involves individual effort and community help. Kyle has also achieved amazing successes on the boys’ basketball team and at numerous track and field events. He was an integral member of the boys’ competitive basketball team and has demonstrated tremendous heart and growth this season and garnered several prestigious recognitions in track and field, including high jump, long jump and several running events. Kyle is a terrific leader in both the school and classroom communities. Within the school community, he has taken part in the District Student Advisory Council, on which he was involved in helping organize and emcee assemblies, and helping organize any number of charity events that arose.

Kyle was also one of two boys who were regularly responsible to set-up and disassemble the sound system for all assemblies and school-wide events that depended upon efficient technology to deliver important lessons, entertainment, and messages to the entire school. Kyle is also a tremendous leader within the classroom, too. He is regularly relied upon to take the lead on performing any number of independent, or group, tasks for his teacher and his peers respect his leadership qualities. He further demonstrates these leadership qualities by regularly, and respectfully, giving his peers advice about the rules, expectations, and responsibilities of students in his class – advice that Kyle regularly lives by and his classmates admire. What’s more, Kyle regularly demonstrates caring and empathy towards his classmates, little buddies, adults, and students in the school and he loves to brag about how much he loves his family. By being incredibly motivated to achieve great successes and by being a tremendous leader, Kyle is incontestably a terrific role model for students and adults alike. Siobhan McAleese Garibaldi secondary school
From the moment Siobhan McAleese arrived at Garibaldi Secondary School, she has found ways to be a leader. Siobhan is a leader not only in the classroom but also during extracurricular activities. One of these activities includes the Rebels For A Cause club, which works with the Me to We foundation to raise money for schools and wells in needy communities. Another club is Link Crew, a club designed to help grade 8s adjust to high school along with other activities around the school. Siobhan is actively involved in both of these clubs, and will continue to be a diligent member throughout her high school years. Additionally, Siobhan has participated in our school’s soccer and volleyball team, where she always gives 100%. Her positive attitude shines through anything she does, and she is never afraid to make new friends. Siobhan has a unique way of uplifting people and finds pleasure in making others happy. Although Siobhan is very busy with school, she still makes time to play soccer for WCAGFC and to volunteer at Maple Ridge Senior Village. However, Siobhan’s favourite
thing to do outside of school is Girl Guides. Siobhan has been a Girl Guides member since grade 1 and got the amazing opportunity to travel to London UK and Switzerland with her unit last summer. Girl Guides is something that gives Siobhan even more opportunities to support her community and put a smile on people’s faces. She is currently a first year Ranger, and looks forward to helping younger members camp at Mount Seymour near the end of this month. At school, Siobhan and her team-mates won $5,000 for their chosen charity last year. The One Way Club Society gained a great deal of support from the money they won. This was through the YPI (Youth Philanthropy Initiative) program that grants money to charities and non-profit organisations. Students have the power to choose the charity they believe will best benefit from the money. Siobhan is always compassionate and kind-hearted in and outside the classroom. She never lets any negativity to weigh her down which contributes to her optimistic approach to life. Siobhan was a leader yesterday, is a leader today, and will be a leader of tomorrow.

Madison McCarron
Yennadon elementary Madison McCarron, in Grade 7 at Yennadon Elementary, is a hardworking and dedicated student who sets goals and works towards achieving them. Madison is always willing to go the extra mile to support those around her. She is the first person to volunteer to help around the classroom or school. She offers support and encouragement to her peers and is a positive role model for younger students. She volunteers her time monitoring the Kindergarten children at lunch time, assists with organization in the library and attends to the recycling program. Madison demonstrates leadership abilities, communication skills and is a collaborative team member with both WE Team and the Student Voice committee. These leadership groups were
responsible for organizing bake sales to raise money for the B.C. SPCA, Walk for Water, Rafiki bracelet sales for Me to We, Jersey Day and food bank collections. Madison enjoys helping others and making a difference. As an athlete, Madison exhibits honesty, respect and sportsmanship while being part of the school’s many sports teams. Outside of school, Madison enjoys playing for her soccer team and attending track and field practices. Madison displays many qualities that make her a wonderful role model and leader.

She believes in her ability to achieve what she sets her mind to, plans the steps to get there, and sets reasonable and achievable goals for herself. Pitt Meadows elementary Ryan McPhee, in Grade 7 at Pitt Meadows Elementary, is a very compassionate, respectful, and outgoing person who is always ready and willing to give back to the school and the community. His friendly, personable and mature nature are just a few of the traits that make Ryan a valued member of Pitt Meadows Elementary. Ryan is always the first to offer to help out teachers and students without hesitation. Within the school, Ryan can be found helping younger students with reading, assisting within the library as book monitor, helping out at the office, doing morning announcements, setting up the gym for assemblies, leading assemblies, and offering his help where it is needed. When the Albion Elementary community thinks of leaders in our school, the name Ryleigh Meredith always comes to mind. Chalayne is an extremely committed individual who has developed a passion for boxing, which she participates in five times a week in the community. Between school and boxing, Chalayne also divides her time among her other interests, such as Cross-fit, reading, listening to a variety of genres of music, creating realism abstract art, and writing poems. Along with her interests in music festivals and spending time with her family, Chalayne has plans for future travel, after graduating in 2020, with her first stop being Times Square in New York City. he actively listens to other people’s comments and thoughts, and reflects accordingly. Ryan’s interests in and concerns about community and environmental issues became evident through his active participation in the district public speaking contest. Out of school, Ryan can be found walking his dog, playing a number of sports (hockey, skiing, golf) or helping out at the local community food banks, serving food and listening to the concerns of others. Ryan’s passion and interest definitely lie within the realm of social sciences (history), but he is excited to explore more of the sciences in high school. Ryan wants to be in a position where he is able to help others and help people make good choices for the future. Addie Nickel Alexander Robinson elementary
Addie Nickel has excelled as a leader at Alexander Robinson Elementary in her Grade 7 year. She is a mature, hard-working, reliable, and responsible student. She is kind and helpful and takes the initiative to help out wherever she can. Throughout the year, Addie has participated in and helped to organize an impressive number of activities and events. Addie has been a part of the Me to We club for three years. She has helped with the planning and organization of a number of Me to We fundraisers and events over the years, including an intermediate dance, WE Day, clothing drives, bake sales, candy gram sales, the Santa Train (to collect items for the local Christmas Hamper society), and the Walk for Water (to raise awareness of access to
clean water around the world). Addie enjoys working with Me to We the most because she has had the opportunity to experience new things and to help the community. Addie has a keen eye and interest in photography. She is an active member of her school’s Media Club this year, taking photos of fun and interesting events going on around the school. These photos and videos are then edited together in the monthly assembly slideshows to help showcase wonderful things that are happening around the school. Addie is a lunchtime monitor for the primary students, helps with the primary book cart, has participated in her school’s talent show as an emcee, and has taken on a leadership role in helping to organize and run her school’s Horse Club. She has created presentations to teach others about horses and horseback riding, as well as fun hands-on activities related to her presentations.

Addie has enjoyed participating in Student Voice, School District No. 42’s district student advisory council. Through this, she has helped to encourage her school to participate in district initiatives, such as Coins for Kids at Christmas and Jersey Day. In addition to taking ballet lessons, Addie spends her free time horseback riding. We know that Addie will continue to be an excellent role model and leader as she moves into high school next year. As she makes that transition and gets a sense of all of the new opportunities available to her, Addie is hoping to continue to work with the Me to We club, as well as Student Voice. She is hoping to act as more of a mentor next year and encourage grade 6/7 students to become more involved in the opportunities and activities that Student Voice offers. Alexander Robinson elementary
Diba Mohammadi is a Grade 7 student at Alexander Robinson Elementary. Diba is an amazing leader. She is an enthusiastic and positive student who can consistently be counted on to help out and try her best in everything she attempts. Diba moved to Canada from Afghanistan in 2016. Since arriving at Alexander Robinson, she has taken on various roles and responsibilities. Whenever a volunteer is needed, Diba happily steps up. She volunteers to read and monitor younger students. She has been actively involved with Me to We for the past two years and has helped to organize different events such as We are Silent and Walk for Water. Diba also helps out with our Got Talent assemblies by emceeing, and is a responsible mem-
ber of our school’s media club. This well-rounded student played on the school’s basketball team, as well. Diba does her best to create and spread positivity in our school and in the community by including and helping others. Outside of school, Diba is very involved with her mosque, volunteering her time and helping out those who need it. She also participates in a debate club. Diba is inspired by Malala Yousafzai and wants to fight for the rights of individuals too as she gets older.

Lila Payne is a Leader of Tomorrow because she is going to change the world one smile at a time. Lila has outstanding empathy for everyone at Maple Ridge Elementary and goes out of her way to make sure that everyone she meets is feeling happy and positive. Lila is an excellent leader and role model for younger students in our school. She is often seen helping younger students on the playground and making sure that everyone is included. She is also a fantastic big buddy and has taken on extra responsibilities such as monitoring classes during recess and lunch, as well as reading with students at the end of the day. Lila can be relied upon to do important tasks around the school. She has emceed several assemblies and has helped to plan
Emilee Reinelt stands out at Whonnock Elementary due to her confident, friendly nature and proactive attitude to social emotional learning. She is always the first student to volunteer to show new students and adults around our school and goes out of her way to ensure they feel welcomed and comfortable. Emilee recently volunteered to coordinate our energy challenge awareness month by turning off lights as often as possible as well as creating a bulletin board display of ways to lower our energy use. She believes the trademark of leadership is the ability to serve as a role model, be a friendly face and always be willing to help others. Emilee strongly believes in equality, kindness, family and friends. In terms of future plans, she would like to enlist in the navy and then do effects make-up or go into law. Her advice to other students includes not being too hard on oneself and not judging other people. “We are all learning,” Emilee says.

Empower A Youth is developing an ever-expanding list of programs to help students and young adults understand financial literacy and prepare them for the real world”… Jesse Sidhu, CEO and Founder, Empower a Youth At a recent student forum, high school students had identified that FINANCIAL LITERACY was one of the main subjects they wish they knew more about prior to leaving high school. Having two kids in the school system, we decided to do something about it. We are happy to say that we have almost completed phase 1 of our Financial Literacy Program for high school students. Working with school educators, we got the opportunity to present to grade 12 students at THSS and MRSS as a trial, on important topics such as: • Budgeting and Managing Debt • True cost of owning a vehicle/housing/insurance • Understanding the importance of CREDIT • Tax basics/paycheck management • Savings/Investment • Cyber Security and Fraud With the trial period completed, we felt we made some really good progress and look forward to expanding the program in the coming school year to students of all grades with various community stake holders and partners. “Through this program, we help prepare young people to plan to build a prosperous financial future and to give them the confidence to make sound financial decisions at every stage of life,” says Maury Kask, chief customer experience officer for Westminster Savings. “We were very proud to partner with Empower a Youth on phase 1, with this financial literacy program that helps youth in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows with money management skills that they’ll need throughout their lives.”
“Our goal is to work with the educators and to help to identify where there may be gaps in the current and new curriculum says Jesse Sidhu. Although we have some of the best teachers in the district, we shouldn’t be putting the ENTIRE burden on them in educating our kids on money matters. Some may say that it should be the parent’s responsibility to teach this at home. Well, what if the parents are struggling with money themselves? What if they feel uncomfortable speaking to their kids about money as they may not be fluent themselves on the subject. This is going to take a collaborative effort.” Why should our kids be taught financial literacy at a young age? We hear over and over again that “Household debt is at an all-time high”, “were not saving as much”, “students are graduating with high student loans (with the exception of some in trades)”, and “health issues that are related to financial stress are on the rise”. We need to start teaching financial literacy at an early age. We would like to thank Westminster Savings for their support and volunteers on making phase 1 so successful. In addition, we are happy to announce that The Rotary Club of Haney has endorsed this program and will make up a pivotal part of the program with its current members. We will be reaching out to other clubs and community groups in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. We welcome any comments or feedback and are always looking for community partners to collaborate with us on teaching our kids Financial Literacy.

Brooke Rutledge is a born leader. She is a nurturer, teacher and role model to two younger brothers and regularly volunteers to monitor the Kindergarten students. She is an enthusiastic member of the WE Team at Yennadon Elementary and is actively engaged in fundraising efforts dedicated to empowering underprivileged individuals. She represents her school well through sportsmanship and always gives her very best effort in team sports, namely volleyball, basketball and ultimate frisbee. She is a top cross-country finisher and encourages all participants as they cross the finish line. She also represents her school in the district track and field meet. For the last two years, Brooke has been a public speaking finalist covering important topics such as self-confidence (2018) and social media (2019). She also selected her “Genius Hour” topic to be raising money to save cats and kittens, and recently spearheaded a social media campaign to raise money for a local non-profit animal shelter. She was featured by the newspaper and recognized by Katie’s Place for donat-

Beth Schwarz, a Grade 10 student leader at Thomas Haney Secondary, has been inspired since an early age to make a difference. Beth is an active member of THSS student council, Key club and various leadership initiatives within the school community. Beth initiated and is the chairperson for organizing Relay for Life at THSS in an effort to raise awareness and money for the Canadian Cancer Society. She continues to work diligently to bring this important event to fruition for the 2019-2020 school year. Beth approaches each situation with curiosity, determination and a positive attitude. Beth has recently been accepted to be a mentor for Big Brothers-Big Sisters Canada starting in the fall for the in school mentoring program. She has also been selected to attend Encounters with Canada in Ottawa and will be attending the medicineand health-themed week this September. Beth is excited to meet people from across Canada and experience another part of our beautiful country. Beth strives for excellence in every endeavour

Mack Seekins is a valuable leader in our Glenwood Elementary community, with a great sense of humour. He is polite, respectful, and always the first to volunteer his free time to help out. Mack has a positive attitude and takes his learning seriously, often modeling social responsibility and perseverance for his peers. He also demonstrates leadership and fair play during daily soccer at school, and plays for the Ridge Meadows Minor Hockey Association and West Coast soccer in our community. Marissa Barclay is a leader because of her positive outlook, her willingness to help others, and her community involvement. She is an avid athlete and participates in rep softball three to five days a week, as well as on her ringette team.

Despite this hectic sport schedule, Marissa is able to keep up with the demands of school, work as a babysitter, and find time for friends. She is also a leader in the district club Student Voices, sharing ideas about bettering our community. Hayden Meier has established himself as a leader this school year. He seeks out opportunities to help others whenever possible, and treats them with respect and patience. Hayden’s leadership skills extend to academics, where his thirst to learn influences his peers. Not only is Hayden a leader in the classroom, but he also helps out in the library at school, and willingly volunteers his free time to help fundraise for school events.

Edith McDermott elementary Jordan Steeves, a Grade 7 student at Edith McDermott Elementary, is quiet and unassuming, yet reliably gets things done without a lot of fanfare. He is a true leader who doesn’t care for the spotlight, but always gets involved and is quick to help. Jordan is one of only a few boys participating in our Global Citizens club. He also attended WE Day as a representative of the Edith McDermott community. Outside of school, Jordan participates in bowling and archery, and continues to find ways to support his community through his involvement with Scouts Canada.

Vann Thompson is a leader today and is one of the Leaders of Tomorrow. Over the past few years, Vann has contributed significant time and effort to the Harry Hooge Elementary community in various ways. Outside of the classroom, Vann has volunteered countless hours before school, after school and during school for Knights for Change and the Me to We projects, assisting teachers with technology questions and concerns, mentoring and training peers on the tech systems and setting up all the audio and visual technological equipment for every assembly, Christmas concert and performance for the school. This year, especially, Vann has been an invaluable resource with his knowledge of the audio/video equipment at Harry Hooge. He has shown leadership and responsibility by taking charge. All of the assemblies and performances would not have been able to occur without him. In the classroom, Vann has also been a

Emmett Tuck is an incredible leader who volunteers tirelessly for the Hammond Elementary school community. He is always willing to put his needs aside in order to help others. His ability to problem-solve and think outside the box has saved the day countless times. Technical difficulties are a common occurrence in an iPad classroom, and Vann is always eager and willing to help come up with a solution. Despite all the time and effort helping around the school and in the classroom, Vann manages to stay on top of his assignments and meet deadlines in his academic work. Emmett is responsible and helpful. He is a quiet leader who does whatever is asked of him without the need for recognition and without complaint. Emmett does all of this while maintaining his academics and playing competitive baseball. Emmet truly exemplifies the qualities of a leader at Hammond. task or job, she can be relied on to get things done with care and efficiency. In the classroom, Lily is kind, compassionate and can be counted on to work well with any of her peers. Outside of school, Lily plays hockey and lacrosse. When she’s not busy with extracurricular activities, Lily enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
