JULY 2019 A monthly guide to events, resources and services for Mission Seniors
Precious park
Marilynne Davis will be at Fraser River Heritage Park on Monday to run the information booth during the Canada Day festivities. A long-time volunteer and community supporter, the 77-year-old says that one of the things she keeps learning is that the secret of being happy is doing things for other people. While she enjoys volunteering for several organizations, Davis said the park is the love of her life. For more see page A24 KEVIN MILLS PHOTO

‘Secret of being happy is doing things for other people’ Long-time Mission volunteer Marilynne Davis will be helping out at the Canada Day festivities Canada Day is approaching fast and it takes a large amount of volunteers to make the Mission celebration a reality. Visitors to Fraser
River Heritage Park on Monday can enjoy a variety of free activities, music, entertainment and more. While you are there, stop by the information booth and say hello to Marilynne Davis. Davis is one of the
many volunteers that help make this event such a great success. However, her involvement in the Mission community goes back farther and involves more than just Canada Day. Davis came to Mis-
sion, from West Vancouver in 1973 and has lived here for the past 46 years. “I just love the community. I love the atmosphere of the community. I love the people of Mission,” she said.

But most of all, she loves Fraser River Heritage Park, calling it “the love of my life.” “The first time I ever came to this park was Canada Day, many, many years ago and I watched them do the citizenship and that really impressed me, how this community would come together in this fantastic venue … I thought I have to be involved. I have to come back here. That’s basically how I got involved with the park.” Davis became an active member of the Heritage Park Board for years, until the organization was shut down. Davis said it’s easy to love the park. “It’s the beauty of the park to start with and of course I’ve seen it open up over the years, when we had the orchard all up there and the rabbits everywhere – there were rabbits everywhere here years ago – now we see maybe one or two. “And the beauty of the layout of the land and also it’s very, very important to know that we are on Sto:lo land,” she said. While her devotion to the park is clear, Davis also helps out with a variety of organizations. She has volunteered with Mission Community

The former medical receptionist retired in 2002, after helping to run clinics with Dr. Baillie. Never one to sit and do nothing, Davis began to plan for life after work. She decided to re-invent herself because she realized she had to do something. “I’ve learned the importance of help-

ing others during many, many years of working in the medical field and it just seemed most natural for me to volunteer. My time was mine now. “I have a core value. I would say that one of the things I keep learning is that the secret of being happy is doing things for other people.” While she has a long volunteer history at the park and in the community, Monday will only be her fourth year as a Canada day volunteer. The first year she sold souvenirs but since then she has run the information booth. Davis enjoys
helping people, handing out Canadian Flag tattoos to the children, who she says get so excited at the event. Davis said volunteering is a win-win. “It’s worthwhile. It’s a good feeling that you get that you are doing something for other people, that you’re not just centred on yourself. It’s more of a sharing thing and people share back with you.” While she may begin to slow down a tiny bit in the coming years, she doesn’t plan to stop. “At the age of 77, I hope to be able to volunteer for many more years to come.” 8617984

SeaSonal allergieS “Hay fever” Woohoo! It’s spring again and the sun is shining bright. What a great time to go hiking. Unfortunately, this is also the time when the trees are shedding big clouds of pollen. But, why should that matter? According to Asthma Canada, about one in five Canadians suffers from a respiratory allergy, like seasonal allergies, which gets worse when exposed to pollen. So, wHat are SeaSonal allergieS? Sometimes called “hay fever”, these are a group of conditions that can cause sneezing, a stuffy or runny nose, and itchy eyes. It usually begins from childhood and stays lifelong for many people. Do you feel your allergy iS getting worSe over tHe yearS? Weather has been very unpredictable over the years, mainly due to climate change. This has a big impact on pollen production. This year, British Columbia has had a slow start with pollen production due to the extended cold weather. This led several trees to release their pollen at the same time, instead of one after another, leading to more pollen production in a short period of time. wHat are tHe SymptomS of SeaSonal allergieS? 1. Stuffy nose, runny nose or sneezing a lot 2. Itchy or red eyes 3. Sore throat 4. Trouble sleeping, which can lead to feeling tired during the day wHy Do Some people get it anD not otHerS? Some people are genetically predisposed to getting seasonal allergies. Their immune system acts as if the substance is harmful to the body, causing the symptoms. DoeS anytHing elSe cauSe SeaSonal allergieS? Along with pollen, many people react with grasses, weeds, and mold spores as well. can you get teSteD for SeaSonal allergieS? Usually, your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and do a physical exam. He might order an allergy skin test which helps figure out what you are allergic to. How can you manage your SeaSonal allergieS? There are many things in the market which are effective, such as: 1. Nasal rinses: These are effective and usually tried first for mild to moderate allergies. It works by rinsing the nose helps get rid of pollen from the nose 2. Steroid nasal sprays: These are extremely effective, especially for stuffy nose. They can now be bought without a prescription at your local pharmacy. They work by reducing inflammation in the nose.

It starts working quickly, but it may take several weeks before you get the full effect. 3. Antihistamine eye drops: Available over the counter as well and is effective especially for itchy eyes. 4. Decongestants: Used for the stuffy nose as well, but are not the first line anymore. They can cause dependence, especially if used more than 3 days in a row. It should also be avoided in people with high blood pressure. 5. Allergy shots: Once the root cause of allergy is found after doing an allergy skin test, some people choose to get the allergy shots as well. Although very effective, these have to be given weekly or monthly by an allergy specialist and usually takes months to see the effects. can you prevent tHe SymptomS of SeaSon allergy? We all know that prevention is the best medicine. You should always try to avoid the things you are allergic to such as pollen, grasses, etc. It is a best practice to: 1. Keep the car and house windows closed and using air conditioning instead. 2. Take a shower before bed to rinse pollen off your hair and skin. 3. Wear a dust mask if you need to be outside. It is always good to talk to your doctor about the benefits and downsides of the different treatment modalities and deciding which is the right one for you. – DR. TARUN SONI References:

Take precautions to avoid scams and frauds. Do not give anyone your bank card or PIN. If you need to write down your PIN, keep that information in a safe place at home and separate from your cards. Do not carry it with you. Make a back-up plan in case you are away or unable to look after your own financial affairs for any reason. Use direct deposits and automatic bill payments.
