Westside Daze will host a Canada Day celebration on July 1 and the threeday event will kick off on July 12. Westside Daze president Leah Thordarson said 2019 was a good year to
host a five-day long event. “To be quite honest, after three days the committee is absolutely exhausted,” Thordarson said. By hosting a Canada Day event as a standalone, the committee was able to successfully apply for a grant from the Heritage Canada Fund. Thordarson said last year, when the application was reviewed, it was rejected. “Even though we separated everything out for the one day, they said, ‘you’re a festival. On July 12, head to Memorial Park in West Kelowna and check out some of the fun events Westside Daze has to offer the whole family. Partygoers can beat the heat by checking out the newly added night market on July 12 and 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. Vendors and local artisans will be selling homemade crafts and goods. The annual parade is scheduled for Saturday at 10:30 a.m. to start off the festival’s first full day. Check out the kids fair; take in some First Nation entertainment; watch some heels and babyfaces battle it out in the Big West Wrestling ring; scope out all of the nice cars in the Show and Shine and cheer on the CycleKart racers. There is something for everyone. But be sure to look to the skies at 10 p.m. on Saturday. Fireworks, sponsored by Wildcat Helicopters, will paint the sky over Lake Okanagan as they’re lit off a barge in Gellatly Point.

CycleKarts première at Westside Daze Splitting the event into two parts lets the committee focus on more fun, organizer says ›› By: Jen Zielinski For the first time in Canada, a Grand Prix of CycleKarts will premiére at Westside Daze, this July 12 to 14. CycleKarts are a type of go-kart racing where competitors drive single-seat cars styled to resemble race cars from the 1920s and 1930s. They are lightweight and handmade. These are not considered a serious race machine, these CycleKarts are built for fun. According to Westside Daze president Leah Thordarson, for this event, the competitors cannot spend more than $2,000 on building a CycleKart and it must be homemade.
“They are really cute,” she said. “There are CycleKart events around the world including in England, New Zealand, Australia and coming up there is a huge international event in Tieton, Washington.” A group of men from West Kelowna will attend the event in Washington to talk about the inaugural Westside Daze Grand Prix. “West Kelowna will actually have the very first cycle event ever, so it is the first in Canada,” Thordarson said. “We don’t expect a ton of cars the first year, but we will build on it.” Currently, the only drivers qualified to participate in the event are those
from a club in West Kelowna that has a few vehicles set for race day. Brian Woods is the CycleKart chairperson that knows the ins-andouts of the Grand Prix. Woods will be on site during Westside Daze to showoff the CycleKarts and answer any questions about the vehicles. While it’s too late to enter this year, interested competitors should discuss with Woods how to participate in 2020. “It’s new for us and so, I am really looking forward to adding this component to the Westside Daze events,” Thordarson said.
CYCLEKART EVENTS SATURDAY JULY 13 WILL INCLUDE: CycleKart Show&Shine from 10a.m.to12p.m. During the Westside Daze parade, which will feature the registered CycleKarts for the entire family to view with NoCost to attend
Canadian Grand Prix Race 12:30–2p.m. Simulation of a 1920’s European GrandPrix where CycleKarts will drive around a course laid out on paved streets. Speeds runless than 30 kilometres per hour for this simulation.Drivers will be required to have all safetygear necessary for this event.
Drag Race Exhibition 2–4:30p.m. Exhibition of two CycleKarts running in astraight line for 100 metres on a paved street. Safety gear will be required from participants. Speed will be less than 27km/h.
Gymkhana Friday 7–8:30p.m. This is a slow speed Drivers Challenge, designed to showcase the driver and CycleKarts ability to manoeuver a pre-laid course in a paved parking lot. Fun for bothdrivers and spectators. Speed is less than 10km/h. [6]
Gravity Race Simulation 7–8:30p.m. This event will be a simulation of “Soap Box Derby” gravity racing where two CycleKarts will run head to head with their drive Canins removed and no motors running. Speeds will not reach 35km/h and length depends on the hill.

Westside Daze has added a “strong” attraction to this year’s fair.
A quick trip in a store can be detrimental to your pet if you decided to leave them in your car while you run that errand.
Locally-sourced “Okanagan Strong” wrestlers from Big West Wrestling will provide two shows during their firstever appearance at the festival on July 13.
A West Kelowna veterinarian is warning pet owners of the dangers your fuzzy buddy can face this summer. “Heat stroke is a condition where the body is exposed to high temperature or humidity over a long period of time,” wrote Dr. Moshe Oz. There are many symptoms and stages because heat stroke becomes fatal by coma or seizures - such as diarrhea, panting, drooling, weakness and confusion but the condition still requires immediate medical care. “If your pet is showing signs of heat stroke, transfer it immediately to a cool shaded spot, pour cool water on your pet but not icy water. “You can pour alcohol on your pet’s paws, alcohol dilates blood vessels, which is helpful in cooling down the body,” said Oz.
Marty Solotki said that adding shows to Westside Daze will help grow the sport in the Okanagan. “It’s a fun little fair,” Solotki said, “and we’re getting the word out there about local wrestling. “We’re hoping that West Kelowna can be a regular town on the playing circuit overall.” Solotki said they had a stroke of good luck by getting accepted into this year’s Westside Daze lineup of attractions. The owner of Big West Wrestling has been involved in the local wrestling scene since 2008. With popular turnouts at Rutland’s May Days and other spots throughout the Okanagan, Solotki has been part of the hard-working local scene looking to grow wrestling from a three to four event per year event, to a three to four event per month event. “At a fair where people are walking around and having fun, we can put eyes on our product and grow the sport,” said Solotki. The two shows will feature an eight-person tournament for the Okanagan Cup, and a shot for the winner to go on to be the number-one-contender for the Big West Championship show in September.
