City of Wetaskiwin will have a second vacant seat at their table after a city councilor tendered her resignation in writing June 24. Councilor Pam Ganske confirmed June 24 to The Wetaskiwin Pipestone Flyer that she had tendered her resignation from council in writing to city manager Peter Tarnawsky that day. Ganske said councilors were planning to ratify the resignation at the council meeting that evening.
She said that being employed by the Wetaskiwin Chamber of Commerce and also sitting at the council table making decisions that affect the city business community was taking a toll. “This is where I’m at,” said Ganske that day. Ganske said it was a tough decision to make as her roughly two years on council was a great learning experience, and she learned more about the City of Wetaskiwin than she thought possible. Ganske said she plans to continue being very involved in volunteer and community work in the city.
The City of Wetaskiwin already has one council vacancy after Patricia MacQuarrie tendered her resignation last spring. As the halfway point of MacQuarrie’s term had not been reached, a by-election was called for early summer, but the city successfully requested to have the by-election held later. She said she had a few words for those who voted for her and supported her. “Just, thank you.” City council decided June 24 that the by-election will be held Sept. 11. Stu.salkeld@pipestoneflyer.ca

The longtime manager of the Town of Millet has been terminated along with another senior town manager noted the municipality in a June 24 press release. “Please be advised that Town of Millet Council has terminated the employment of Chief Administrative Officer, Teri Pelletier, and Director of Public Services, Mike Jones, for just cause effective June 24,” stated
the press release. “Assistant CAO Lisa Schoening has been appointed as the acting interim Chief Administrative Officer until further notice. “All correspondence directed to Ms. Pelletier or Mr. Jones shall be directed to Lisa Schoening at millet@millet.ca or 780-3874554. “The Town wants to reassure residents that we will be working diligently to ensure all operations of the Town are up to date during this transition.” Stu.salkeld@pipestoneflyer.ca

The value of supporting local business Furthermore to the point of avoiding travellers… By Stu Salkeld The Pipestone Flyer
A few weeks ago I wrote about the subject of travelling contractors and, to a lesser extent, door to door salesmen. The point I was trying to make was mostly something to the effect, “You should support your local community which in the end benefits you too.” I fielded a phone call from a local resident of the Wetaskiwin area who claimed he had too many bad experiences with local contractors and only hired out of town companies.; it seems to me this fellow is being a bit too fussy and unrealistic. No job is ever perfect and the best of us make mistakes; it’s not whether a mistake is made, it’s how you handle it that counts It reminded me of a situation I watched unfold some years ago. Before I went to college in 1993 I worked for a construction company in
my hometown of Oyen. We did a little bit of everything, including building grain bins, adding layers to grain bins (a horrible, thankless job), home repair and roofing. We did a lot of roofing around Oyen. It just so happens the owner of the company one morning said, “Well, it looks like we’re going to do some work for one of your wealthy relatives.” It turns out one of my relatives, needing some roofing work done on her home, decided to hire a door to door contractor rather than hire the company that her relative worked for. Now, you must understand Oyen sits on the bald prairie. Out there, we call a windbreak of bushes a “forest.”Not only that, the darn wind just howls across those bare, fescue-adorned fields. The reason we were going to repair
my relative’s roof is that the company she hired didn’t know or care that Oyen got heavy wind virtually all year. When placing asphalt shingles, they must be tarred down or the wind will rip them off. And since asphalt shingles are nailed together when placed, a strong wind, in a minute or two, can rip half the roof off. The travelling contractor didn’t tar the shingles. When the next strong wind rose, it ripped half the roof off and dropped them in the yard, near the curb and out in the street. My relative tried to contact the travelling contractor and, I’m told, the contractor, who’d moved on to greener pastures, said “You didn’t tell us to tar, so we didn’t tar. It’s your problem, not mine.” So my relative called us to fix the problem. My boss let me know that
he wasn’t going to cut a deal for my relative. He said she went with the out of town guy, who apparently was “cheaper” than us, he ripped her off, let her pay the price for it now. The one thing I will say for the out of town guy is that he had some attractive shingles there. We only put on colours like dual brown or dual grey; he placed blue, white and grey shingles that matched the colour of her siding. It’s just too bad that half of them blew off. We repaired the roof and my relative not only paid for the initial work, she apparently paid through the nose to get the original work repaired. If you think about it, she thought she was saving money, but ended up paying quite a bit more than a roof should have cost. Live and learn. by Jessica Jones For the Pipestone Flyer When Ontario-born Indigenous chef Rich Francis, Top Chef finalist, found out he was heading to Maskwacis to film episode four of a new documentary series called Red Chef Revival, he turned to the Internet seeking out information about the community. What he found was a barrage of negativity on gun violence, stories of a suicide epidemic and crime. But the portrayal was a stark contrast to what he, directors, and film crew experienced in January 2018 during their three-day filming of the series, Red Chef Revival. The series follows three Indigenous chefs as they travel across the country, unearthing culinary traditions and exploring what modern Indigenous cuisine means to them. “I have never been to that area before,” Francis recalled of filming in Maskwacis, speaking last week during a quick break of filming lobster divers in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. “Everything that I Googled, everything portrayed in the media, was negative, but when we got there, it was everything but that,” he said of Maskwacis. “The people have a total sense of community and my experience was amazing. The elder-youth relationship was really strong and the youth are fairly grounded in their culture,” Francis said.
During the filming of episode four on Maskwacis, Francis is shown hunting for moose, speaking with elders and the community in attempts to find new meaning to reconciliation by bringing people together around traditional foods. He cooks moose nose ragu for the community, alongside other chefs at the at Nipsis Cafe. He is also shown teaching students of the Nipisihkopahk School how to make their own moose leg salad. The series hopes to build a better understanding of Indigenous cuisine, while also preserving culture for future generations. “Before, food was a need for survival,” said Red Chef Revival director Ryan Mah. “But now it can be a platform for discussion,” he said. “Food brings people together to converse and reconciliation is a part of that. The community has seen some terrible things, and we talk about this over a meal, but then we go to the school and the students are full of hope and they want to come back to the community and we have these meaningful conversations,” Mah explained. The filming on Maskwacis is the most memorable for Mah, as it was the first time he took part in a sweat ceremony. “The community was so happy for us to be there,” he said. “It was an honour to shine a light on this story.” With beautiful cinematography, Red Chef Revival also touches on the barriers of serving Indigenous cuisine as much of the food used from Indigenous 190646G0 190646G1

allowed,” he said, mentioning that reconciliation can’t fully happen if the government is controlling what he serves — traditional foods. The entire series of Red Chef Revival is on YouTube, including Episode Four: Maskwacis. The series is also on the Telus Optic channel playing on the On Demand platform.

Incidents of impaired operation of a vehicle, vessel or aircraft continues to drop each year, reports Statistics Canada. The number decreased to 61,649 in 2017 from 63,968 in 2016. But incidents of drug-impaired operation are on the rise, climbing to 3,410 in 2017 from 1,937 in 2013. Anyone sitting in the driver’s seat, whether the vehicle is moving or not, is now required
by law to provide a breath sample to police when asked. Failure to comply will result in criminal charges, which carry the same, or more serious, penalties as impaired-driving charges. A Blo o d A lcohol Concentration (BAC) is the amount of alcohol in your blood. If your BAC is 0.05 per cent, that means you have 50 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. Each drink consumed within a certain time frame increases your BAC.

In Canada, the Criminal Code BAC limit is 0.08 per cent. At this level, Criminal Code impaired driving charges can be laid. The prohibited drug concentration levels of THC (cannabis) is two nanograms, or billionths of a gram, of THC per ml of blood. Having any detectable amount of eight other drugs within two hours of driving is prohibited. These include Cocaine, LSD, 6-MAM (a metabolite of heroin), Ketamine, Phencyclidine (PCP), Psilocybin, Psilocin (magic mushrooms), and Methamphetamine. According to Health Canada, cannabis can impair your ability to drive safely or operate equipment because it slows reaction times, lowers the ability to pay attention and affects coordination. Under new legislation, police can demand a blood sample
and/or drug recognition testing after a suspected drug-impaired driver is arrested. In addition to possible injury or death, driving while high has the same penalties as drunk driving. They range from a maximum fine of $1,000 to 10 years in prison. According to the RCMP, driving after using drugs, including prescription drugs, is just as dangerous as drinking and driving. Drug Recognition Experts can determine if a person is under the influence of a drug and can charge that person with drug-impaired driving. A major research study prepared by Traffic Injury Research Foundation found that young people between 16 and 19 years old account for 23 per cent of fatalities, 18 per cent of injuries and 11 per cent of those arrested for alcohol-related driving offences. The City of Wetaskiwin and partners have an astounding list of activities planned for marking Canada Day this July 1. The holiday begins June 28 and 29 as Edmonton International Raceway, located north of the city near Montgomery Glen Golf Course, has Ladies Night stock car test-drives Friday night, followed the next day by the 100 lap NASCAR Super Stock special event. On Canada Day, Monday July 1, stock car test drives are available and ticket prices start at $5.
Canada Day celebrations from the city also get a head start as the Wetaskiwin 2019 Community Festival will run June 30 and July 1 in Montgomery Park (Centennial Dr. and 53 Ave.) from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. both days The event, sponsored by Wetaskiwin churches and other partners, is free of charge, features family games and activities and also offers free hot dogs, beverages, freezies and popcorn. July 1 starts off deliciously as the annual Lions Pancake Breakfast is offered at the Memorial Arts Centre (across the street from the Legion) from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and only costs $5. Ages 10 and under are free.
Next up is the Canada Day parade, which kicks off at 11 a.m. and runs along Main Street to the Rec grounds. The parade will run from 11 a.m. to 12 noon; some roads may be affected by this so plan accordingly. Downtown Wetaskiwin will also feature outdoor markets this year that will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The markets will be available at 51 St. between 50 Ave & 49 Ave, 49 Ave between 51 St. & 52 St. Don’t forget to drop by the Wetaskiwin Heritage Museum for Canada Day cake; cake will be served beginning at 10 a.m. The Canada Day ceremony will be held at 12:30 p.m. at the Wetaskiwin Royal Canadian Legion branch. Hot dog and a pop will be available at the Legion from noon to 3 p.m. for $3.

Wetaskiwin RCMP look for wanted man after liquor store robbed Wetaskiwin RCMP investigate armed robbery

Wetaskiwin RCMP are looking for a suspect after a liquor store was robbed at gun point June 17. According to Wetaskiwin RCMP spokesperson Cst. Shaun Marchand, “On June 17, 2019, at approximately 8:30 p.m. Wetaskiwin RCMP received a complaint of an armed robbery that occurred at the Wetaskiwin Liquor Store. “Two suspects robbed the Wetaskiwin Liquor Store at gun point, stealing two bottles of liquor and an undisclosed amount of cash. One of the suspects produced what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it at the cashier during
the robbery. “The cashier was not injured during this incident. “Wetaskiwin City RCMP in conjunction with General Investigation Section completed an investigation. The suspect with the handgun has been identified as 26-year-old Jayvin Saddleback of Maskwacis and is currently wanted on robbery and various firearms charges. The RCMP is seeking assistance in identifying the other suspect. “An arrest warrant has been issued for Jayvin Saddleback for the following: · Robbery with Offensive Weapon · Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose · Carrying a Concealed Weapon

Fifty percent of respondents felt their housing situation was unstable A finalized rural homelessness report—undertaken by the Alberta Rural Development Network—has been made available to the City of Wetaskiwin stated the city in a press release June 18. In partnership with the Family and Community Support Services Association of Alberta, the Alberta Rural Development Network led a province-wide effort to estimate homelessness in rural communities in Alberta. Funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Homelessness Partnering Strategy, the Rural Homelessness Estimation Project is an initiative which facilitated homelessness data collection in 20 communities across rural Alberta over a three-month period in fall 2018. The City of Wetaskiwin was one of the participating communities. “The data collected with the assistance of the
Alberta Rural Development Network holds incredible value to our community and provides us with a better understanding of homelessness in Wetaskiwin,” said Kevin Lucas, Director of Community Services with the City of Wetaskiwin. “Using this data as a guide, we will be able to focus our resources to areas that are truly in need.” The primary data collected for Wetaskiwin indicated that 50 percent of respondents felt their housing situation was unstable, and that 38 percent of those experiencing unstable housing have always lived in Wetaskiwin. Conflict was listed by many respondents as the primary reason they felt their housing was unstable. Donation provides City of Wetaskiwin residents with free reusable bags John Maude and Susan Quinn Charitable Foundation donated $15,000 to city A limited supply of free reusable bags will be available in most local grocery stores next month thanks to a generous donation made by the John Maude and Susan Quinn Charitable Foundation. In anticipation of the upcoming Plastic Bag Ban Bylaw 1913-18—which prohibits the sale of single-use plastic bags in Wetaskiwin as of July 9, 2019— the John Maude and Susan Quinn Charitable Foundation donated $15,000 toward the purchase of reusable bags for community members. The City has ordered the bags and will be dropping
them off at participating grocery stores to hand out. “The request to ban plastic bags was first brought before Wetaskiwin City Council seven years ago, and we are thrilled to see it finally happen” said John Maude. “We hope this donation will help ease the transition to more sustainable shopping for the community.” Wetaskiwin is the second community in Alberta to ban single-use plastic bags. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo was the first, having had similar legislation in place since 2010.

One thing led to another in a late night dispute in Wetaskiwin June 23 and three men are facing serious violence-related charges. According to a press release from Wetaskiwin RCMP spokesperson Cst. Shaun Marchand, “On June 23, 2019, at approximately 5:10 a.m. Wetaskiwin RCMP were contacted by a third party advising they were flagged down by a male who appeared to have been assaulted. “Wetaskiwin City RCMP in conjunction with General Investigation Section completed an investigation. It was determined that the altercation occurred around the area of the skateboard park off 47 Street in Wetaskiwin at approximately 12:30 a.m. “Three males got into a dispute. A knife was produced and threatened by the lone male. Two of the males began assaulting the lone male who had the knife as a fourth male was present.
