June 21st is recognized across Canada as National Indigenous Peoples Day, a day to celebrate and learn more about the cultural diversity of Canada’s First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. For Kootenay Lake school district students, the entire year has been filled with a multitude of opportunities for students to learn about and participate in Aboriginal education. Just a week prior to the nationally recognized day this year, almost 600 K-12 students from across the district converged at Salmo Secondary for the wuqanq̓ankimik run. A year in the making and planning, the Aboriginal run/walk event was a collaboration with the Lower Kootenay Band chief and council and the SD8 Aboriginal education department staff. What began as an initiative to promote physical activity for youth, the event grew to become a unique opportunity to collaborate and include elders and community members in the spirit of reconciliation. The Ktunaxa word wuqanq̓ankimik means “to walk with long strides … to take big steps.” It was apparent in all of the preliminary speeches that day that events such as this one are indeed making great strides towards reconciliation. LKB councillor Jared Basil, speaking to all the students, staff and community members present that afternoon said “We all have the
ability to make a difference when it comes to reconciliation, that we can make significant strides, big strides when there is a willingness to be open.” Danica Weager, district Indigenization co-ordinator, was instrumental in organizing the event. With the assistance of additional funding from SportBC, ISPARC as well as a Healthy Schools grant, students enjoyed a terrific afternoon that included a free lunch, a bandana for every runner and several terrific draw prizes such as fitbits, water bottles, wireless headphones and other gadgets. The opening ceremonies included a welcome to the territory and remarks from Jared Basil, a welcome from superintendent Dr. Christine Perkins and a submitted letter from MLA Michelle Mungall, read aloud by Salmo Secondary Principal Jann Schmidt. The Lower Kootenay Band drum group Eagle Bear Spirit then provided an opening song before the students did a warm up and assembled at the starting line. Students and participating community members had the option of completing a one, three, or five kilometre walk/run. The run was immediately followed by a free hot dog lunch and then a reconciliation art activity and relay games in the school fields. Despite the heat, everyone seemed to enjoy the music, kinship and physical activity that afternoon. “Movement is medicine!” exclaimed Weager, in the true spirit of celebrating an inclusive approach to Aboriginal education.

Christina Lake now the Pickleball Capital of Canada SUBMITTED Special to Black Press
The Pickleball Capital of Canada is now officially Christina Lake. Christina Gateway Community Development Association has announced approval of the trademark designation from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. Donna Wilchynski of Gateway has been working on the project since August 2017. With the support of Christina Lake regional district director Grace McGregor, Wilchynski presented the project to the Christina Lake Parks and Recreation Commission, who were excited to jump on board as it ties into their mandate to bring recreation programs to the Lake. “The award of this designation is an incredible opportunity to promote recreation in Christina Lake and will benefit the community as a whole,” said parks and recreation manager Tom Sprado. “Christina Lake Parks and Recreation is also completing the expansion of the Christina Lake pickleball courts by adding three more play areas, so this ties in quite nicely as the courts will be ready for play in about a week.”
McGregor says “owning the trademark Pickleball Capital of Canada is another anchor strengthening Christina Lake’s place on the map. I am quite pleased that not only does this project promote recreation and the health and wellness of Christina Lake residents, it will also benefit visitors who come to play and will be a great spin-off economically for local businesses.” Gateway president Nola Delaye agrees: “We have an incredible group of people here who are working very hard promoting pickleball in Christina Lake, this designation will give them the momentum to promote far and wide.” Wilchynski says her focus and mission is always to find ways for her community to benefit from the shoulder seasons and offering pickleball is a way to bring people to the lake. “Christina Lake has the option of having tournaments in the spring, summer and fall so it sure is a win-win, residents, visitors and businesses will indeed benefit.” Wilchynski added that she is excited to work with the Christina Lake Pickleball Club, as “they are a phenomenal group of dedicated people.” Pickleball is a growing sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis.

Teachers share successes with new curriculum Kootenay Lake school district is winning awards and sharing resources SUBMITTED Special to Black Press
June always marks the end of the school year, a time for celebration and also reflection over the year’s past events. The 2018-19 school year also marks the final year before the full implementation of the B.C.’s new curriculum K-12 begins this September. As part of the transition to the new curriculum, the Ministry of Education has provided additional funding to districts to ensure teachers have access to resources to learn, prepare and organize their classroom supports around implementation. For this academic year, schools throughout Kootenay Lake school district were encouraged to apply for curriculum project grants that aligned directly with one or more of the district’s four strategic goals. Nineteen unique school teams were granted between $1,000 to $3,000 each towards curriculum projects for 2018-2019. Teachers and administrators representing many of the schools in the district came together this month to share their successes and evidence of student learning with one another at
the board office. Many schools put their grant money towards providing release time for teachers to work together to derive new lesson plans and introduce cross-curricular projects. Teachers at J.V. Humphries and Blewett Elementary both acknowledged how important this collaborative time is for teachers. “Often as a teacher I feel alone in my classroom,” said Grace Broadfoot, secondary sciences and outdoor education teacher in Kaslo. “Having that collaboration time to work with other teachers and share ideas is so important.” “I’m so grateful,” said Blewett’s learning support teacher Jeff Hammerich. “I learned something totally new alongside the kids, and was then able to model that self-directed learning and self-critical thinking to some of our most vulnerable students who in turn for the first time became leaders in their classroom on a new subject.” Hammerich worked together with Grade 3/4 teacher James Wheeler to learn ADST tools Co-Spaces and Tinkercad. Other schools applied for grant funding to review and further develop assessment and reporting policies. Having benefited from professional development workshops with Carol Fullarton last year, teachers at Canyon Lister Elementary looked closely at ways to implement Ful-

Organized sports in the summer are a great way to keep kids healthy and active outdoors. Community foundations across the Columbia Basin have various funds that support sports equipment, facilities, registration fees, and more. Tina Choi, executive director of the Osprey Community Foundation in Nelson said that many Community Foundations have sports-related funds to which people can donate. “From bursaries and scholarships for local athletes attending post-secondary school to financial assistance for regis-
tration and equipment for the younger kids, there are lots of ways to support your community’s love for recreation and sport,” she said. “Lots of us have memories of our time playing organized sports when we were kids, and we know that youth sport participation provides numerous health and social benefits,” Choi explained. “By giving to a sports-related fund inside your local community foundation, you’re keeping your money and its benefits close to home.” Whether through an individual donation, bequest in a will, or more formal event, there are many ways to sup-
port youth sports through your Community Foundation. “We’ve seen adult leagues hosting fundraising events that support a youth-oriented sports fund, and that’s a great way to help the next generation of active youth in our community,” Choi said. Community foundations are registered charities that manage donations for a wide range of specific causes. Donors can give money in a variety of ways: • donating to existing funds that match their area of philanthropic interest; • creating their own fund that in turn generates an ongoing donation to a charity of their choice; • give an unrestrict-

Salmo Secondary presented on her work with English 10-12 students around the theme of marginalization. Through field trips, and studying the visual texts of multiple indigenous authors, Terpstra observed shifting attitudes in the spirit of reconciliation and was able to build connections to place for many of her students. At L.V. Rogers Secondary, English teacher Carla Wilson spearheaded an intergenerational initiative called Growing Together, Rising Strong, that brought students and seniors together to discuss deep topics and authentic life experiences. The proj-
ect was transformational for many of the participants, both young and old, building resiliency and providing space to share histories and develop compassion. The project also involved local author Lee Reid, who they collaborated with to produce the book, Growing Together: Conversations between Seniors and Youth. The B.C. Retired Teachers’ Association Excellence in Education committee has awarded L.V. Rogers the 2019 Legion/Golden Star Award for this program. The Legion award money will be used, in part, for the second phase of the Growing Together program, to produce a documentary film. The curriculum presentations filled an entire day with dialogue, shared experiences and visuals, and offered a valued opportunity for administrators and teachers from around the district to ask questions and promote strategies that worked for them with their colleagues and peers. “Every school in the district was able to take part in at least one project this year through opportunities provided at the district, regional and provincial levels,” said Naomi Ross, acting director of innovative education. In addition to the curriculum grants, the innovative education department was also able to host 105 professional learning opportunities for staff through the Focus, Learn, Excel initiative.

Two more weeks remain in an exhibition by Oxygen Art Centre artist-in-residence Evan Locke. Locke is an installation artist originally from New Brunswick who now resides in Victoria. During his residency, Locke constructed a large-scale painting as a sculptural piece designed specifically for the Oxygen Art Centre space. His site-specific installation piece, Immedi-
acy Protracted, continues from now until on Friday, July 12. The gallery hours during the run of the exhibition are from 1 to 5 p.m. from Wednesday through Saturday at 3-320 Vernon St. in Nelson. Locke says his intention is to “explore the impacts of scale and architectural spatial relationships” as they relate the tradition of painting. The physical size of the piece with approximately 400 square feet of canvas and it’s supporting wooden structural apparatus make it “visibly evident that the work cannot leave the space without being dismantled.”

People travelling to the West Kootenay in their electric vehicles are going to have more options for fastcharging their cars. Fortis BC plans to install 12 new Direct Current Fast Charge (DCFC) stations to its EV charging network. Rossland will be
getting one of those stations. It will be replacing one of the aging Level Two charge stations now in place off Washington Street, next to the Hospital Auxiliary Thrift Store. Fast-charging stations are expected to charge a compact electric vehicle in about a half an hour, as compared to a Level-2 station that requires about
three to four hours. The BC Utilities Commission-approved charge rate is $9 per half hour. By working in close collaboration with local communities and all levels of government, FortisBC was able to place these stations at locations that ease charging concerns for both short commutes and longer highway travel.

The stations are also slated for Nelson, Kaslo, New Denver and Nakusp, as well as in communities along Highway 3 between the Kootenays and Kelowna. “Making the switch to electric vehicles is part of our government’s CleanBC plan to cut climate pollution, boost the economy, and create opportunities for communities across the province,”said Michelle Mungall, Minister Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. “This new series of electric vehicle chargers in B.C’s interior will strengthen our existing charging network and make it easier to charge up.” These fast chargers were 50 per cent funded by Natural Resources Canada and 25 per cent by B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources as part of the Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment Initiative. FortisBC funded the remaining amount and will own and maintain the stations.

Tiny invasive mussels cause big problems SUBMITTED Special to Black Press
The spring 2019 status report on the provincial mussel defence program was recently published on the program’s website. The program’s goal is to prevent the introduction of invasive zebra and quagga mussels into B.C. by inspecting boats, monitoring lakes and educating the public. Watercraft inspection stations are currently operating across the province. As of May 31, 5,500 inspections have taken place and five boats were found infested with the invasive mussels. It only takes one contaminated boat to start a new infestation. To date, B.C. is still free of invasive mussels, which have caused millions in damage per year to hydropower stations, and municipal water supplies in other parts of North America that have already been invaded by mussels. In addition to economic impacts, mussels can negatively impact biodiversity, species at risk, fisheries productivity, water quality, and recreation opportunities. During the 2018 operations season 78,000 people were reached to promote the Clean, Drain, Dry message, 450 decontaminations were performed and 82 violation tickets were issued to people who failed to stop at the mandatory inspection stations. The majority of non-compliant vehicles were carrying non-motorized watercraft such as kayaks, paddleboards and canoes. New for 2019 is the addition of another mussel detection dog named Major. This is a welcome addition to the southeast region since Major’s handler Cynthia Mann is located in Nelson. Lake monitoring is
another aspect of the provincial mussel defence program. Next to prevention, the next best tool in our toolbox is early detection. The Central Kootenay Invasive Species Society will be conducting plankton sampling for invasive mussels from June through October. Staff collect samples within nine different high priority waterbodies. These samples are sent to a provincial lab to be analyzed for zebra and quagga mussel veligers, the free-swimming microscopic mussel larvae. In an effort to encourage watercraft users to arrive at waterbodies with clean boats and gear CKISS is coordinating six new Clean Drain Dry signs to be installed at popular boat launches this summer. New signs will be located at Scotties Marina near Syringa, New Denver and Kaslo public boat launches, Beaver Creek Provincial Park, Wragge Beach and Howser recreation sites. The CKISS outreach booth will be at a variety of community events and boat launches throughout the summer to talk to watercraft enthusiasts about Clean, Drain
Dry Protocol. CKISS reminds you that suspected invasive mussels should be reported immediately to the Conservation Officer Services Report All Poachers and Polluters: 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP). Pink Floyd tribute bound for Nelson, Trail in September SUBMITTED Special to Black Press

ArtWalk returns to Nelson this weekend for 31st year SUBMITTED Special to Black Press
The Nelson and District Arts Council is thrilled to announce the 31st annual ArtWalk. ArtWalk has become a highlight of the arts and cultural season, offering the community
a free event that showcases the work of local artists in business galleries. This year’s event hosts over 35 artists in 17 venues downtown and down to the waterfront. Opening night is Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Seventeen of the 18 venues will be open (the Nelson and District Youth Centre will not be participating, as their renovations have
run long). Showing artists will be on hand to chat about their work. There will be roaming performers visiting the venues and performing on the streets. Look for harpists, saxophone players, hang drummers, hula hoopers, dancers, singers, musicians, and more. The schedule of these performances is

Fixing the Nakusp arena’s cooling system has cost the village a pretty penny. Council heard recently it’s going to take an extra $50,000 to repair the arena’s cooling system, nearly 50 per cent more than originally budgeted. “We were a caught a little off guard by this one,” says Mayor Tom Zeleznik. Problems with the compressors first brought the electricians in to check the system, says Zeleznik. However, workers soon found a host of problems, from poorly installed “soft starters” for
the system, to worn bearings to unmapped electrical schematics. “They found it was more an electrical problem causing the compressors to fail,” says Zeleznik. “They normally have a 15-to-20 year lifespan, but for us they were only lasting three to eight years. “But now they found the reason, so hopefully we will get longer use out of them.” But making the fix was expensive. The repairs as budgeted were $96,508. The additional work cost $48,311, bringing the total for the project to $144,819. But the village caught a break: this year it received a one-time boost to its com-
munity works reserve, or gas tax grant, from the federal government. The village had more than $180,000 in the fund it could access. Having dodged a big budget bullet, Zeleznik says it’s time for the community to talk about the arena and how to make better use of it. “It’s something you call a big elephant,” he says. “It would be good to sit down with the community, with the regional district, and talk about ways to make the arena more active, to be able to raise more money to help support it. “But it’s not unusual, most small communities run into Nakusp’s mayor says repairs to the ice-making system at the arena should make it more reliable and lengthen its this problem.” lifespan. The village says right now, they wouldn’t be able to. “There is no provision for agricultural use within our water-rate bylaw and it would have to be amended,” says a recent report to council from chief administrative officer Cheryl Martens. “Should the applicant decide to pursue this development, they would need to obtain approval from the village to use its water for the proposed use. “Actual consumption would have to be determined to see if the village is able to supply what the applicant would need without affecting the residents and businesses in the village.” Paul says he doesn’t think water should be an issue. He plans to eventually gather four micro-grow licences, which would allow him to grow about four acres of cannabis. With the irrigation system he’s planning to use, he says his operation shouldn’t affect the village capacity. “The water use isn’t that great on this plant,” he says. “I’d use spaghetti lines on the plants, 10 minutes

That’s nothing.” And Paul notes there are other people in Nakusp using village water for agricultural purposes. “There’s a neighbour who raises cattle on village water,” he says. “The Spicers’ farm uses village water. There are vineyards in Nakusp on village water. “I’m starting out with 200 square meters of crop. There are bigger gardens out there than 200 square metres.” Unravelling the red tape The water issue is just one of a dozen hurdles Paul has had to face on the way to growing cannabis legally. Many people who have wanted to grow have found the applica-
tion process confusing, contradictory, opaque, time-consuming and costly. But Paul, who started the application process the day the rules came out, says he’s making progress. That’s because says if you want to grow pot in the West Kootenay, it helps if you know how to cut down trees. “I am a forester, I am used to working with government and their regulations and filling out paperwork,” he says. “It is a big advantage. I know a lot of people around here who are trying to get into it and they just can’t. They don’t understand all the legal jargon that goes on. “But I don’t think it’s impossible, I think it’s doable.” Paul says he’s had great support from
local governments — both the RDCK and Village of Nakusp have offered help where they can. The federal government, not so much. “You think people want to answer your questions? The answer is no,” he says. “I called the government office and they said ‘write us an email.’ “I was surprised they even answered the phone. You get absolutely nowhere, they are afraid to tell you anything, they say just ‘email.’” The Pauls also have to spend thousands on fencing, security systems, quality control processes, as well as find buyers for the product at a price they can turn a profit on. If all goes well, Paul says they hope to start growing next year.

Purchase of Kootenay Lake watershed protects land, species at risk The Canadian Press
A watershed between Nelson and Creston that includes a rare inland temperate rainforest has been purchased by the Nature Conservancy of Canada, protecting it from development. The national land trust says the
purchase and protection of the 79-square-kilometre Next Creek watershed was one of its highest conservation priorities in B.C. The watershed, along the west side of Kootenay Lake, is in the centre of the more than 600-square-kilometre Darkwoods Conservation Area.
Because the watershed was privately owned, the nature conservancy says it, and the surrounding conservation area, faced a threat of intensified or unsustainable industrial or recreational activity. Acquisition of Next Creek effectively completes the Darkwoods Conservation Area and a network
of protected lands covering most of the mountainous region bounded by the lake and Highways 3 and 6 between Nelson, Salmo and Creston. Close to $20 million was needed to purchase the land and provide for long-term management, with funds coming from private donors, governments and several businesses
and foundations. Darkwoods offers essential habitat for almost 40 confirmed species at risk, including grizzly bear, wolverine, peregrine falcon and mountain caribou, as well as an inland temperate rainforest which is rare because it receives most of its moisture from snow.

Consulting, the percentage of homeowners moving up to their next home is the lowest in 25 years. Many are opting to make starter homes permanent by expanding them and repairing homes for the long haul. Since 2010, however, NAR says the average expected length of time people will stay in their homes before selling is now 15 years. they’re not inclined to walk away from those rates, even if doing so means getting more house. Also, a low inventory of available houses has stymied repeat buying for many people.
