A celebration of life will be held on Friday, July 5 for MP Mark Warawa, who lost his brief battle with cancer last Thursday. As news of his death spread, condolences and remembrances of his life poured forth from Langley residents and national politicians alike, with both supporters and opponents offering words of praise. “He was a good man, he was well loved in Langley-Aldergrove,” said Tako van Popta, who was recently chosen by the Langley-Aldergrove Conservative riding association to run as the next candidate following Warawa. Van Popta knew Warawa for many years, and said his heart goes out to Warawa’s wife Diane and all his family. Warawa “It’s sad for me personally, it’s sad for the people of his riding,” he said. Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer spoke of being elected with Warawa in 2004, and of “learning the Ottawa ropes together.” “I cannot begin to express the sorrow and loss Jill and I feel today at the passing of MP Mark Warawa,” Scheer said in a statement. “Mark was an example to which all Parliamentarians should aspire. She said the main hope is that the district does a thorough consultation. She noted the change could shorten bus trips for some students while lengthening them for others. “D.W. Poppy already is a very large catchment,” Yakabuski said. The consultation is to involve parents and staff from both the ACSS and D.W. Poppy school regions. School board Chair Megan Dykeman said no hard deadline has been placed on drafting a report from consultation with the Poppy and ACSS school communities. Enrolment in ACSS is at 614 students this year. A 2017 district report noted it had a significant amount of underutilized space. D.W. Poppy had 841 students this year, with an operating capacity of 1,125.

High school grads walk in tradition

Walks reconnect grads with former schools Grad walks took place all over the Langley School District last week. It’s an annual tradition that continues to grow. The first-ever grad walk started at Langley Secondary School in 2016, and now nearly all high schools in the district take part. Anyone lucky to have seen one of them, would have watched Grade 12 students in cap and gown unloading off a bus at their elementary and middle school. They walk the halls, exchange highfives, and sometimes the younger students hold up signs of encouragement or hand out roses. It’s a chance for grads to visit their alma maters, see their former teachers, and reminisce about the past. Principal of H.D. Stafford Middle School Shawn Davids said it’s one of the best days of the year. He was around when these LSS grads were students at his school. “We don’t always get to see the outcome of the work that we do when kids are younger,” he said. “But we know that it is a team effort. It requires everybody to help these kids be successful. So, to have the opportunity to see them hit that huge pinnacle in their education and
be a part of that celebration is so great for our staff and great for our kids to see,” the principal elaborated. “We want our kids to know that that’s what’s on their horizon and be excited about that coming up.” Uplands Elementary Kindergarten teacher Shauna Aranas taught some of the Langley Secondary School grads 13 years ago. “I’m always very proud of the fact that they have persevered and finished their school career,” Aranas said. “I get emotional and I do get teary when I see them. It’s wonderful to have them come back and be able to see how much they’ve changed.” Noel Booth Elementary principal James Ribeyre welcomed the Brookswood Secondary School grads. He says it helps build community. “It’s really a celebration of these kids’ learning and it really helps connect the elementary school to the high school. It also connects the learning for our kids that are in elementary school. They’re going to be able to see, that this is where this all goes and it creates engagement and excitement and it really celebrates success.” Leanne Stewart, a parent of a Brookswood Secondary grad,

changed and how his dreams have changed over the years.” Aldergrove Community Secondary principal Jeremy Lyndon said it benefits both the grads and the little ones. “It’s about inspiring the future generations of Totems that are coming up and for our kids, its about legacy and leaving something behind as we bid them one final farewell as they move onto the rest of their lives.”

Peewee hockey player remembered Minor Hockey Association votes to retire Coleton Nelson’s jersey number

The jersey of late peewee hockey player, Coleton Nelson, will be retired. The decision made last Wednesday by the Aldergrove’s Minor Hockey Association. Brenda and Wayne Nelson lost Coleton, their 12-year-old son, to a car accident on Feb. 18, 2011. On the fifth anniversary of the accident, their daughter Chrystie also lost her 19-month-old son Ryker Mcclurg. The motion to preserve the number 10 jersey was brought forth by board member Lindsay Thorley. “I know Brenda has been down and feeling Coleton has been forgotten, and in my last year on the board I vowed to not let that happen,” Thorley explained. Unanimous support arose from board members during the meeting, she said. The dedication means Coleton’s choice jersey number since he was six (#10) will remain unclaimable to those in the peewee division. Thorley also plans to organize a jersey retirement ceremony in which she hopes to include Coleton’s teammates, family, friends, and past recipients of the Coleton Nelson Love of the Game award and scholarship. “I want him to live on through all who knew him and through those just getting to know who he was,” his mother Brenda told the Aldergrove Star. The mother initially asked the hockey as-
sociation to retire Coleton’s jersey just after his passing, but was initially told “no” due to financial reasons, she recounted. Though the old community arena hung his jersey, his number had not been retired, Thor-

Canadian Equestrian Team nominates Aldergrove rider Hawley Bennett Well-known Langley-area riders Hawley Bennett and Mark Laskin have been nominated to the Canadian Equestrian Team for the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. Bennett, an Aldergrove resident and her horse “Jollybo” were named to the reserve eventing team. Bennett has represented Canada, and won medals, many times in the past, at the Pan American Games in 2003 and 2011, at the Olympics in Athens in 2004, and in London in 2012, at the World Equestrian Games in 2010 and the World Cup in Sweden in 2005. Langley’s Laskin was named Cana-
dian Chef d’Equipe of the jumping team. In all, Equestrian Canada (EC) and the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) announced Canada will field three full equestrian teams for the Pan Am Games, consisting of 10 women and two men. The equestrian portion of the Games will kick off with the elegance of dressage July 28, 29 and 31. Eventing will follow August 2-4, with jumping wrapping things up August 6, 7 and 9. For the Canadian Equestrian Team it is an opportunity for all three disciplines to qualify for the Tokyo 2020
Olympic Games in Japan. Jon Garner, EC Director of Sport was optimistic. “I have the utmost confidence in this group to achieve the goal of qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo,” Garner continued. “It will require single-minded focus from athletes and support teams, and I have no doubt that these teams will produce podium performances in Peru.” Lima 2019 will bring together approximately 6,700 athletes from 41 nations of the Americas and feature 62 disciplines in 39 sports. It will be the largest sporting event ever held in Peru.
